Chocolate Spoons With Holiday Sprinkles For Christmas Cheer

7

Since the longer nights get dark and cold in the autumn and winter months, I personally like to add a little bit of brightness with the little things that make ordinary customs feel extraordinary. That’s why I enjoy making chocolate spoons to go with my hot beverages before sunrise, or after dusk.

Chocolate Spoons With Holiday Sprinkles For Christmas Cheer

What are chocolate spoons used for

The holidays are more than anything else a time for fun. I love finding things to do that are purely for the joy of doing them. It’s rare to get these opportunities so I try to take them whenever I can during the season of cheer. Chocolate edible spoons literally melt in your coffee or hot chocolate. It’s hard to imagine anything more joyous than melting a chocolate spoon in a hot cup of my favourite coffee blend. Possibly a big mug of rich chocolatey cocoa with a chocolate edible spoon melting while the fireplace blazes and carols stream through the air.

This recipe for chocolate spoons with holiday sprinkles requires molds in order to get the desired spoon shape for the chocolate, but it’s a lot of fun. I really enjoy having little edible spoons that I can stir my coffee with. It adds that balance of sweetness to the bitterness of the coffee that makes each sip better than the last. When I use it with my hot chocolate it doubles down on the chocolatey flavour. What makes these DIY chocolate spoons even more fun is that they are covered in Christmas sprinkles to make the presentation even more magical.

Chocolate spoon gift ideas

Because these chocolate spoons are so delightful and they look so pretty, they also make excellent gifts for the holiday season. If you know any coffee drinkers or hot chocolate enthusiasts, add these chocolate spoons to a festive gift basket to make it a more unique and personal present.

Snacks At Epcot From Pavilions Around The World Showcase

0

You do not need a festival to chow down on small bites as you make your way around the World Showcase pavilions picking up snacks at Epcot. Spend the day grabbing some quick snacks at these counter service locations and enjoy the international food at Disney World’s second largest theme park.

Family at Epcot World Showcase

Epcot snacks around the world

You can have a snack at every pavilion which I think is a really fun way to experience Epcot.

Esquitas

Your first stop as you enter the world showcase is probably Mexico. If you visit Canada first, let me know about it in the comments! While you are here, you can pick up some tacos at Cantina de San Angel, or you can make a quicker stop at Choza de Margarita for this spicy corn topped with chipotle mayo, quest fresco, and Tajin chili-lime powder.

School Bread

When you pass through Norway pavilion at Epcot, be sure to pick up a baked good from Kringla Bakeri Og Kafe. Try the School bread, a custard filled sweet roll dipped in coconut.

Cotton Candy

Venture into the back of the China Pavilion at Epcot to the House of Good Fortune to get a huge flowery cotton candy treat. The cotton candy vender sells made to order cotton candy with up to five colourful layers!

Jumbo Pretzel

I can’t resist stopping by Somerfest for a bratwurst when I come through the Germany pavilion at Epcot, but there are other popular sides and deserts to get there as well. This is the best place to get a real Bavarian style pretzel. Not like the Mickey Pretzels you find elsewhere.

Pizzas at Via Napoli Ristorante e Pizzeria

Pizzas and Gelato

Italy is another place full of amazing food. And I’m talking about the Italy pavilion. Didn’t you know you could get pizza by the slice at a walk up window at one of Italian restaurants in Epcot, Via Napoli Ristorante e Pizzeria. Before you venture too far though, pick up some sweet Gelati Creations at Gelateria Toscana.

Jumbo Turkey Leg

By the time you get to the American pavilion at Epcot it will be time for some protein. What is better than a Jumbo Turkey Leg at the Fife & Drum Tavern to fill you up and keep you going? It just so happens that this pavilion has plenty of seating and entertainment, so if the tryptophan kicks in, you’re in the right place.

Kakigori with Sweet Milk Topping

On the outer edge of the Japan Pavilion at Epcot you will find Kabuki Cafe, a kiosk that sells shaved ice called Kakigõri. it comes in a variety of fruity flavours and for an added treat, you can add sweet milk topping.

Mediterranean Food

Spice Road Table is a table service location at the Morocco pavilion at Epcot that sits on the water overlooking the lagoon. They offer a full assortments of Mediterranean food such has Naan Spreads, Grilled Lamb Kefta, and House-made Hummus Fries. You can also purchase a drink in the standing only bar inside. You can also order snacks at Epcot at the window, or try your luck inside and order assorted Moroccan pastries.

Fromage And Ice Cream

In the France Pavilion at Epcot, it almost isn’t fair to take just one snack. There is such a variety of sweet and savoury foods to choose from between L’Artisan des Glaces and La Halles Boulangerie. At this point in your journey, though, I recommend the Fromage at Les Halles. A delicious assortment of imported cheese.

Fish and Chips

If your like me the Yorkshire County Fish Shop will be irresistible as you walk through the United Kingdom pavilion. Fish and Chips are just perfect here and they make a good quick bite if you feel like more of a meal. Otherwise, you can stick to snacking by picking up Cuties® Mandarin 3-pack, which is an easy and fast healthy fruit snack to eat.

Maple Popcorn

Finally we come to the end of the road, the Canada Pavilion at Epcot. You can’t leave Canada without having something Maple flavoured. It just so happens that the popcorn cart as you pass by has a variety and actually offers Maple Popcorn, which I use say is way better than Caramel popcorn.

France Pavilon at Epcot

The best Epcot snacks are always the ones you can eat on the go while visiting the pavilions at the World Showcase. Time is of the essence when you are visiting Walt Disney World! There is no better time to try the best food to eat at Epcot than during the International Food and Wine Festival in the fall.

Reasons To Find Who Lives in Your Neighbourhood

1

It is important that when you are moving to a new place, you find who lives in your neighbourhood. Most times people do not know who their neighbours are. This includes people who have been living in the neighbourhood for a long period. As much as these days everyone likes to live a private life free from neighbours’ intrusion, it is important and wise to get acquainted with people you live together with in the neighbourhood.

Around 5 million people in Canada are moving from one province or city to another and we previously shared how to cut down moving budgets, and even with properly planned moving, you need to make sure that you will be living in a safe and secure neighbourhood.

Family moving

Reasons Why you need to know people living in your neighborhood

It is most likely that your children will end up going to the same school as your neighbour’s kids. You do not want to associate your children with children who do not have good manners or display violent tendencies. Moreover, you don’t want your children to be involved in criminal activities that might be as a result of the influence of their peers. In 2019-2020 over 22 071 cases involving youth committed crimes were presented in a court and you definitely are not among the parents who want this to happen with your son or daughter.

Knowing who your neighbours are entails knowing what they do for a living. Your neighbour could have certain criminal records and you need to be watchful. This will help you protect yourself and your property and also notify the authorities about their criminal activities if necessary.

You also never know when you will be needing help. Being acquainted with your neighbours can improve their chance of rendering a helping hand. You will also be able to know which neighbour can render the kind of help you need.

Also, as much as we all like independence, no man is an island. People need to interact with other people in their neighbourhood. This is gradually declining but it doesn’t make it any less important. It is good that you build a relationship with people living around you. They will serve as support systems to you most times and it’s an opportunity for you to learn about other people. Some researches show that people who have a healthy relationship with their neighbours enjoy better health. Find people in your neighbourhood who you have similar interests and try to build a relationship with them

Finally, aside from the sense of safety you get from knowing who the people living close to you are, neighbours who have a neighbourly relationship can strategize together on ways to foster community security and other necessities in the neighbourhood.

How you can find who lives in your neighborhood

There are many ways you can find out the people living in your neighbourhood with ease. These ways are safe and legal and you can pick any you are most comfortable with and use it in your neighbour’s search.

  • There are sites that you can go on to find out the names of your neighbours. You simply input your street name and the names of those living on that street will pop up. Certain sites for some token even take it a step further and help you find your neighbours phone number, criminal records, etc.
  • Run a check on them through service providers like a watchdog or community driven websites especially to find out if your neighbour has been a sex offender. This is particularly important for the sake of your children. There are community maintained sites generate a map of the location of sex offenders. You click each marker around your vicinity to see the photo and profile. Unfortunately, there is no public registry in Canada due to SOIRA, and you cannot 100% trust community driven websites. Nevertheless, the rule “never talk to strangers” works as well. The statistics of missing children in Canada speaks of itself, each year over 50 000 cases are reported missing and knowing who lives next door to you might help you to prevent the crime.
  • Self-assessment is another great tool you can use. From day-to-day activities and encounters, you should be able to tell how neighbourly your neighbour is. These days, most neighbourhoods utilize the NextDoor app to network with other people living in their neighbourhoods. You can check out your neighbour’s profile on the app just like in other social media apps.
  • Again, you can try getting to know your neighbours on one on one basis. This does not require any search. You simply try to be friendly and see for yourself their responses.
  • Hiring a private investigator. This is rather cost-intensive and should be an option where all other methods fail. Some people might not be friendly and look suspicious, and if you are afraid of the safety of your beloved ones, this check might help.
  • You can also find your neighbours’ addresses using any of the reverse lookup sites available. This might protect you from unwanted contacts with the people who are involved in illegal activities and might not be your neighbours at all. Some burglars and scam artists might act like neighbours to collect information about the victim.

As seen above, you must find out who lives in your neighbourhood for a good number of reasons. Moreover, if you are interested in other tricks for learning more about people in your neighbourhood, it is a great idea to check the article on how to find out who your neighbours are

Baked Pumpkin Donuts with Maple Cinnamon Glaze and Chocolate Drizzle

2

For many of us, fall is the most favourite time of the year, the weather is cooler and the air is crisp. It is a time when we enjoy comfort foods like soups, stews, and of course the flavourful spices used when cooking or baking in recipes like this best baked pumpkin donuts with maple cinnamon glaze and chocolate drizzle.

For this recipe for baked donuts, you will be using pumpkin puree and not pumpkin pie filling. Visit a pumpkin patch to get one fresh for baking and make your on puree. If you are not a fan of pumpkin then check out these Apple Cider Donuts or these Blueberry Mini Baked Cake Donuts.

Recipe for Baked Pumpkin Donuts

Do you bake or fry donuts?

When it comes to to donuts, they can either be baked in the oven or deep fried in oil in a pan and now you can even use your air fryer. The fried donuts are yeast recipes that need to rise, light in texture, and medium brown. The baked pumpkin donuts are smaller, baking powder instead of yeast and more compact.

Baked Donuts

If you are counting calories, watching your fat intake or monitoring your cholesterol then you may want to stick to baked pumpkin spice donuts. The temperature they are baked at will give them a paler colour than fried and will be soft inside and out. This is the healthier choice to make.

Fried Donuts

If you aren’t one to worry about the calories and don’t want to spend hours in the kitchen, then fried donuts are for you. It only takes a few minutes to cook them this way. They will be crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. This is the more favoured way to eat donuts, but the not so healthy option.

How to store baked donuts

There are a few ways to store pumpkin donuts to keep them fresh like plastic wrap or aluminum foil; however, I like to use an air tight container for keeping them fresh longer. They can be kept on the counter or stored in the fridge. If you decide to freeze your homemade baked pumpkin donuts to use at a later date, they can be kept for about 3 months.

Why Do We Give Out Candy On Halloween

0

When my kids where younger, they asked why do we give out candy on Halloween? That’s a very good question! It brought up a discussion on the history of Halloween and its origins. Do you know why we do this?

WHY GIVE OUT CANDY ON HALLOWEEN

The roots of this tradition of giving out candy runs back much further than children getting candy from neighbours. Originally known as Samhain, this day celebrated the last day of autumn and prepared the ancient Celtic pagans for the cold and arduous winter months to come.

It used to hold that the day started at sunset and ended the following sunset. Samhain started at sunset October thirty-first and ended sunset November first. It involved a great feast, a parade, a bonfire, and sacrifices to the deities of the Otherworld that no spirits harm their families. It was thought to be that during this time those trapped in the bodies of Animals were released into their next incarnation. The masks and costumes were worn to hide one from vengeful souls. Food (treats) were left on the front doorstep that the vengeful souls may deflect to another house and not cause harm to their families.

Why Do We Give Out Candy On Halloween

ALL SOULS DAY

However, in an attempt to “cover up” any pagan roots of the major Sabbats (pagan holidays) around 800 AD, Pope Boniface IV designated the first as “All Saint’s Day” and the thirty-first as “All Hallows Eve”. 200 years later, the second of November became known as “All Souls Day”, a celebration similar to Samhain. A bonfire, costumes, and parade were celebrated once again. Samhain was sort of revived, except this time the poor of England would beg for food. In an attempt to help the poor, a pastry was created called a “soul cake” and was given to the poor that they might pray for the families dead relatives.

SOUL CAKES

The processing and distribution of these “soul cakes” were highly encouraged by the Church to replace the tradition of leaving food for the new incarnates. This became known as “going-a-souling” and the children highly anticipated going from house to house collecting food, money, and drink. When the English settled in America, obviously the tradition stuck. Even today, children are going from door to door, unknowingly collecting their “soul cakes” and unknowingly are sparking up an ancient pagan tradition.

Know that next time a child comes knocking at your door asking “trick or treat”, you can think “going-a-souling” and take pride that such an ancient tradition made it through over twelve-hundred years of persecution. Also note that all of the “changes” really did not make an impact on many of the original traditions!

Next Halloween, when you’re passing out soul cakes (candy) for prayers, do some reading into what the ancient ways are really all about!

Canadian Moms Alert: Is Cooking With An Air Fryer Healthy?

5

Perhaps it comes as no surprise that the air fryer is an invention for the health and wellness industry. In recent decades especially, health and wellbeing have become more important to us all the time as research and understanding have allowed us to form a more wholesome approach to not only what works best momentarily, but what is going to be most meaningful and sustainable in the long term.

Health and wellbeing have been the direct result of a recognition and understanding of the importance of focusing and prioritizing our own health and wellbeing over that of other seemingly important innovations for a lifetime. And today, there are many gadgets and innovations that are designed and intended to make taking care of ourselves more convenient and more efficient such as the air fryer.

Canadian Moms Alert: Is Cooking With An Air Fryer Healthy?

The introduction of the air fryer

In the market space of health and wellbeing, there are new innovations being introduced every other day. One of the biggest today is of course the air fryer. The introduction of the air fryer brought to the table a new way for individuals to be able to use hot air to fry their food in a way that gave them more control on the process as well as the end result. From the moment they were introduced to the market, they have been flying off the shelves as more and more individuals across the board around the globe have been choosing to invest in this particular kitchen appliance, Canadian families included. The introduction of this appliance was met with an incredible amount of enthusiasm and ever since it has been able to go from strength with relative ease and transparency.

There have been numerous Canadian families singing its praises for the way it saves them time and how convenient it is to use, on top of how much healthier it is. like this ow you can serve fries to your children without feeling guilty about the amount of trans fat and salt that’s littered in each serving.

How versatile is an air fryer?

Taking a look at our recipes, we’d say pretty versatile! You can whip up a three ingredient apple pie with your air fryer and make the perfect fall treat. For something a little savoury, you can make this air fryer asparagus recipe or give our coconut shrimp a go. These shrimps can be scrumptious appetizers or a great companions to a cold pint on a rainy or snowy day. The crunch of this healthy snack will satiate your desire for anything deep fried and the flavours from this recipe will surely make you hanker for more. Air fryers can toast, bake, fry, and more. We’d say that it’s pretty versatile. Furthermore, it can make rather bland food, such as vegetables, taste sinfully good.

Research shows that Canadian families don’t eat the recommended amount of fruits and veggies. While an air fryer might not able to help with the former, there are tons of vegetable based recipes on the internet that you can make in an air fryer. Possibly one of our favourite is the cauliflower cheese. You get all of the yummy for just a fraction of the calories that traditional recipes have.

Last but not least, and this is probably something that is a great selling point for families all over the world is that… air fryers come with a self-cleaning mode! You can’t chuck some water into your frying pan or deep fryer and expect it to wash itself, but you can pour in some soapy water into your air fryer or convectional oven and allow it to swish all the grime and grease away.

Is cooking with an air fryer healthy?

The answer to this question is not typically black and white. While the air fryer does indeed offer a healthier way to fry your food than the deep fryers (i.e. using hot air to fry rather than oil), the quality of the food that you are putting into the air fryer definitely has an impact in the end result and the overall health associated with this device. Cooking with an air fryer is healthy when you are able to do so in a way that prioritizes healthy produce and healthy processes as well as the use of the machine itself. Simply putting anything in an air fryer is not an effective way to promote healthy eating. It is important to do your research and to figure out how to utilize this machine in the healthiest way possible.

However, research shows that air frying is loads healthier than deep frying. Not only does it decrease the formation of harmful substances such as acrylamide – a suspected carcinogen – due to the high heat. That’s not to say that air frying doesn’t have the same risks, in fact, traditionally pan frying also generates harmful carcinogens in minimal amounts. However, but the risks of using an air fryer versus a deep fryer is considerably reduced, with research citing up to a 90% reduction.

Is Cooking With An Air Fryer Healthy?

The bottom line

There is quite a lot to be said about the fact that whether it is a great deal you found online or the best air fryer on the market, cooking with an air fryer can definitely be healthier if you are willing and able to put in the effort to ensure that it is so. Cooking with the air fryer can make a world of difference not only in convenience and efficiency and time management, but also in the quality of your food that you are putting on your table. It is important to do your research and figure out how you can make the most of this device while also investing in your long term health and wellbeing as a direct result of investing in an air fryer in the first place.

Twix Cookies Recipe

12

Is it cookie? Is it a candy bar? Honestly, this tasty recipe for Twix cookies is a little bit of both. If you’re in the mood for chocolatey caramel goodness, these twix caramel cookies are just for you.

Twix Cookies

Chances are you have everything in your pantry to make these easy Twix cookies with the exception of melting chocolate and caramel. You could easily substitute chocolate chips for the melted chocolate for a similar taste. Making a batch of homemade caramel is also a possibility and probably easier than you think!

Who invented twix

Twix, originally invented by Forrest Mars Sr. and the Mars Company Ltd. in the UK in 1967, made its way to several other countries by 1979. The name means “twin biscuits,” which totally makes sense. Through the years, there have been lots of different spinoff products of the original Twix. Most of these limited editions were introduced in the UK and various European locations.

There was a chocolate and orange version, a coffee version and a mint version… just to name a few. Unfortunately, all of these flavours have been “retired” and there’s no news of them becoming available any time soon.

Follow these cooking baking tips and tricks below!

Butter versus margarine

Let’s talk about butter. I totally recommend using real butter over margarine any day. The taste of your finished product (especially baked goods) is so much better. As a less expensive alternative, use half butter and half margarine.

How to make powdered sugar at home

Here’s another cool baking tip. Why purchase powdered sugar when you can make your own at home, quickly and easily? Simply process granulated sugar in a blender or food processor. That’s all there is to it! The more refined the granulated sugar, the fluffier the powdered sugar.

What Is The History of Halloween

0

Halloween began as the Celt’s way to celebrate the coming of the new year. The Celts then lived in Ireland, the United Kingdom, Northern France, and many areas of Eastern Europe. They believed this was a dark time when the dead returned to the earth. You will find below more information on what is the history of Halloween.

THE CELTS

Celts occupied many parts of Eastern Europe, including Greece and Spain. They were a barbaric tribe, who passed down their traditions and origins by mouth. The first written recording of the Celts, appeared around “500 BCE,” according to historian and researcher Leigh T. Denault.

The Celts were a mysterious, barbaric group of people. They were strong fighters, lived in farming villages, and produced high-quality metal work. Like many cultures around them, the Celts worshipped Gods and Goddesses, and other deities, and believed the number three (the triad) to symbolize the “three layered nature of the human soul”.

According to Richard Hooker’s online article, “European Middle Ages: The Celts“, “druids” played a large role in Celtic religious rituals. These “priests” were of a higher class (celts were known to have a class system), and well learned. Druids were responsible for carrying out the “religious rituals” of the Celts.

DRUIDS

There were three specialties “within ancient Druidism”. The “Bards” kept traditions and were trained in “language, grammar, stories”, and a variety of information for 12 years. The “Ovates,” were the healers. The “Druids” and “Druidesses” were well educated, extremely talented, mostly male, and acted as “priests”.

Druids considered the night of October 31st to be the beginning of a new year, “Samhain, the end of warm season”. It was during this time that the spirits of the dead were to Rome the earth, and bonfires were lit to protect the living from the dead.

The holiday of Halloween is said to also be named from the “Druid Lord of Death, Saman”. Most widely known today as, “The Grim Reaper”.

The ancient Celts believed the sun was “loosing strength” due to the coming of the cooler temperatures, and that the “Lord of Death” was over powering the sun god. Since the evil god was overpowering the sun, it is believed he would release the wicked souls back to earth on the night of Halloween. Because of this, sacrifices were made, fires were lit, and Druids would carry out the rituals to appease their “Lord of Death”.

JULIUS CEASAR’S VIEW OF THE CELTIC PEOPLE

Eventually, the Roman empire began to infiltrate into the Celtic culture, and they realized how superstitious a people the Celts were. Julius Ceasar wrote an account of the Druid priests, saying, “All Gallic nations are given too much superstition”. He goes on to explain the sacrifices made by the people in order to appease the Gods.

Even so, the Romans celebrated a festival named “Feralia”, which intended to give rest and peace to the departed.” After conquering a large amount of Celtic territory, these two festivals started to mix together, to give the world the modern day version of “Halloween”.

CHRISTIANITY ENTERS HALLOWEEN

“In the 7th Century”, a new holiday was decided upon to replace both the Celtic and Roman festivals, “All Saints Day”; however, The Catholic Church eventually decided to designate October 31st as “All Soul’s Day”. A day to remember the dead and pray for the ones who are no longer on earth by offering blessings. November 1st was then named, “All Saints Day”, a day to honour those who sacrificed for the church or who were considered saints.

Unfortunately, the church was never able to totally abolish the pagan practices of Halloween, and the two were mixed.

Happy Halloween!

TODAY’S HALLOWEEN

Now, the holiday of Halloween is celebrated as a night to enjoy frights, drinkscrafts, and treats, while dressing up as a favourite character of some sort. Many of the things enjoyed by adults and children today originated from the Celtic festival of Samhain and the Roman festival of Feralia.

So, while celebrating this Halloween night, remember that there is more to the history than just pumpkinscostumes, and trick-or-treats!

Mom’s Night Out: Ways To Sneak In One Without Feeling Guilty

0

Motherhood has its share of ups and downs and you may have probably embraced it already, but every once in a while, you may feel that you also deserve a break. Having a mom’s night out occasionally is not just good, but important too. Here’s why and how you can sneak in one without feeling guilty about it.

Reasons to Have a Mom’s Night Out

You already know most of these, but here’s emphasizing on some of the most important ones: yes, you actually need to have a mom’s night out and make time time just for you!

Mom's Night Out: Ways To Sneak In One Without Feeling Guilty

Socializing

It helps you socialize and make friends, which can do everything from lowering your stress levels and blood pressure, improving your energy levels, and even reduces the risk of mortality.

Connecting with other moms

It makes you feel you’re not alone, both literally and in motherhood. Connecting with other moms can make you realize how parenthood is tough, and not everyone can do everything. If you’re feeling down about yourself as a mom, interacting with other moms can make you realize how there’s no such thing as a perfect mom.

I am Important

Getting a mom’s night out can instantly make you feel pampered, and a bit of self care is super important. After all, you can’t give much if your own cup is empty now- isn’t it?

Personal Time and Space

It gives you that personal time and space especially if you barely remember the last time you were able to enjoy life outside of your kids, and the only time you’re actually alone is when you take that quick bath.

I am not just a mom

It’ll help you remember who you are! With motherhood being so demanding, you may often forget your own desires, dreams, and passions, and getting a little time for yourself can remind you of those things that really made you what you are. It can be a nice refreshing experience.

Ways to Have a Mom’s Night Out

Okay, this one’s easier said than done for most moms, simply because motherhood is a full time job. Here are a few tips to make sure you’re able to fix a mom’s night out for yourself.

Flexible Schedule

Be flexible. It doesn’t need to be the night literally. If you’re relatively unoccupied during the day, a mom’s day out should work fine too.

Keep your Mom’s Night Out Simple

Keep things simple so that you can get a lot of moms and friends to join in. It can be a simple lunch at a new neighbourhood restaurant or an hour at the spa with your girlfriends or even just a bowling game and some snacks at the nearby entertainment centre. Anything really that uplifts your mood and is easy to join.

Ask for help

Get some help from your family members, particularly your spouse. Fix a couple of days, like twice a month, where you can get your spouse to handle the kids for a while when you go out and spend some me time. Don’t feel guilty about it, you deserve it!

Don’t micromanage

Do not micromanage! Avoid constantly being in touch with your babysitter or family member in charge of your kid even when you’re out. Instead, enjoy the time you get for yourself: that’s literally the whole point of it.

mom's night out

Don’t fret if no plan seems to work out. Take small steps towards making it work: plan a short walk in the park, or an hour of reading at the library or even just a 30 minute yoga session. Take baby steps towards it, but make sure you do it! If all else fails, watch Mom’s Night Out the movie!

What Was the Original Name of Halloween?

0

What was halloween originally called? The original name for Halloween used to be called Samhain.

What is Samhain?

Halloween on October 31st, or All Hallow’s Eve, used to be known as Samhain, meaning ‘summer’s end’. Some say it was the point the Celts used to mark the end of a year and the start of a new one. Today, the ancient meanings of Halloween have largely been lost as it has become a commercial event.

What Was the Original Name of Halloween?

CELTIC FESTIVAL OF SAMHAIN

The ancient festival of Samhain can be pronounced as SAH-win or SHAH-vin. According to Christan Hummel in The Lost Meaning of Halloween, during this special time, the Celts believed that the normal laws of space and time no longer applied. The veil between worlds was thin, and this meant that members of the family who were now dead could return to celebrate with their loved ones.

Samhain occurs at the opposite point to Beltane, the celebration of spring, on the Celtic calendar, which can be pictured as a wheel. Key to the meaning of Samhain is the concept of the in-between: a time of neither summer nor winter, but a meeting place between. An ideal time for magic because of the blurring of boundaries between Earth and Otherworld.

OFFERINGS TO THE ANCESTORS ON SAMHAIN

According to Rosemary Roberts in Celtic Spirituality: Simple Blessings, Wisdom, and Guidance for Daily Living, during Samhain people shared their good fortune by making offerings of the harvest’s fruit to their ancestors. This custom continues today in Ireland where food is left for the family spirits at Halloween time.

During Samhain, Roberts explains, families would put out all domestic fires and ceremonially rekindle them from the king’s grand fire. These new home fires would then be maintained throughout the following year.

MEANINGS OF THE JACK-O-LANTERN

The word ‘Jack-o-Lantern‘, according to Christan Hummel, came about when the ancient Irish carved out turnips and placed candles inside, to light the way for ‘Jack’, a trickster spirit who was trapped between the two worlds of the dead and the living.

Jack-o-lantern

SAMHAIN BECOMES ALL SAINTS DAY

When the Church came into power, it could not sanction a festival for the dead, but turned Samhain into All Saints Day on November 1st and All Souls Day on November 2nd, in honour of the blessed dead. This festival came into being during the 17th Century.

Honouring Samhain, the original name of Halloween, this year is a good way to reconnect with and celebrate the natural cycles of life, which are often lost in our fast-paced modern lives. One way to do this is by lighting candles and meditating on one’s ancestors and what they have passed on.

A snickerdoodle is similar to a sugar cookie, but instead of just sugar, it is mixed with cinnamon. It is known for its cracked texture and soft and chewy inside. This cookie flavour has been reconstructed into drinks, desserts, and more. Who doesn’t love a hint of cinnamon?

What is an Apple Cobbler?

There are so many types of baked apple desserts. Pies have a crust on the bottom and usually on top of the fruit. Crisps or crumbles have the fruit on the bottom and a crispy crumble on top. So what exactly is an apple cobbler? It is a deep-dished baked dessert with apples and a thick biscuit or pie dough topping. It is believed that the name came from the topping looking like cobblestone.

The Best Shopping Experiences in Canada’s Capital Region

0

As the capital region of Canada, the Ottawa-Gatineau area contains plenty of excellent shopping options. Whether you’re just visiting from far away and looking for souvenirs of your trip, or have recently relocated to the Ottawa area and need to get accustomed to the surrounding area, you’re going to want to know the best places to buy all the things you need.

One easy way to find the best options in shopping when you move to Ottawa or another region is to frequent a website that specializes in listing all of the most popular shopping complexes in each part of Canada. If you’ve been bitten by the travel bug and love shopping in new places, an online guide will prove invaluable.

The Best Shopping Experiences in Canada’s Capital Region

Luckily, you now have the following list of the biggest and best shopping experiences around the national capital region to get you started.

Rideau Centre

Located on Rideau Street, right in the heart of Ottawa, the Rideau Centre is the largest shopping mall in the national capital region. Suppose you’re visiting Ottawa as a tourist. In that case, the location of the Rideau Centre is perfect for your shopping needs since it is just a short walk from the parliament buildings, the National Art Gallery and many of Ottawa’s most popular attractions.

Bayshore Shopping Centre

As the second-largest shopping mall in the area, the Bayshore Shopping Centre has everything you need. It can also accommodate almost 4000 parking spaces so that you can avoid some of the traffic headaches of the downtown area.

This makes Bayshore an attractive option if you’re already in the North Shore community. Along with many stores to choose from, the Bayshore Shopping Centre frequently invites guests to enjoy events, such as concerts and festivals.

Les Promenades Gatineau

The biggest shopping centre in Gatineau – a medium-sized city directly across the river from Ottawa – is Les Promenades Gatineau. Like the Bayshore Shopping Centre, Les Promenades Gatineau is easy to access with a vehicle because it is located at one of the city’s major intersections, on its main highway, Autoroute 50. It is also comparable in size with about 165 stores.

woman holding shopping bags

Place d’Orléans

A little further down the highway east, you can find Place d’Orléans, which contains more stores than Les Promenades Gatineau. Besides its many retail venues, Place d’Orléans boasts a Goodlife Fitness exercise facility and a substantial food court.

Sparks Street

Sparks Street is a historical area located a short walk from parliament hill. While all of the locations listed so far have been significant shopping centres containing an abundance of stores, Sparks Street provides a different kind of shopping experience as a pedestrian mall. Along with shops, it contains government offices and many attractive restaurants.

St. Laurent Shopping Centre

The St. Laurent Shopping Centre offers a whopping 174 retail stores in one easy-to-find location on St. Laurent Boulevard. Like many of the finest large shopping complexes, the St. Laurent Shopping Centre also holds special events suitable for families. For example, their most recent event, called Got Your Ears On, invited the Earth Rangers organization to teach kids about sustainability while emphasizing helping them relieve their anxieties about the environment.

One of the best parts about shopping at St. Laurent Shopping Centre is that you’ll also be near the Ottawa Train Yards and can cover both locations in a single day.

Ottawa Train Yards

The Ottawa Train Yards is a massive shopping district covering 750,000 square feet over 110 acres of property. The complex is located in the heart of the city, so it will be easy to find no matter where you happen to be staying.

The Ottawa Train Yards area gets its name from the city’s train station, which is situated close to the shopping area, so if you’re visiting the city by train, this should be your first stop for shopping. Another option is to plan out a route using Ottawa’s convenient travel planner website.

Ottawa Farmers’ Market

If you’re shopping for fresh farmers’ produce, local and artisanal foods, or handmade crafts and souvenirs, then you won’t want to miss out on the Ottawa Farmers’ Market. Featuring over 150 vendors selling goods produced, this market offers something for everyone.

Since it also frequently hosts buskers, musicians and other types of local entertainment, a visit to the market is as much of a fun way to spend the day as it is an excellent resource for shopping. If you’re looking for a way to spend the day with toddlers or young children, then the Ottawa Farmers’ Market will provide a wholesome and exciting new experience.

The Best Shopping Experiences in Canada’s Capital Region

Ottawa may be known as a tourist destination because of its abundance of cultural attractions, such as museums and art galleries, but it is also packed with everything you could want in shopping options. This list only contains a few of those choices, so it remains up to you to find your own hidden gems.

If you’re an avid shopper who considers a trip to the mall to be an essential pastime, then you’re probably not going to be satisfied until you’ve checked out every possible location for yourself. The only way to ensure you’ve covered all of your bases is to stay informed with an online shopping directory.

How a Busy Working Mom Can Lose Weight

0

Canadian working moms are among the most admirable people in the world for their capacity to juggle a career and a family with a tight schedule. If you are one of them, it can be hard work and exhausting to take care of everything. You may notice weight gain due to stress, which can also lead to depression and a lack of confidence. However, there are many ways to stop the increase in weight and set the right scales back for a better you. Here are some ways on how a busy working mom can lose weight.

How a Busy Working Mom Can Lose Weight

Weight Loss Depends On What You Eat

The food that you eat is the major factor in controlling your weight. Many people do not know that you don’t need to spend many hours in the gym or at home working out to lose weight. It is all about changing your eating habits to get faster and better results. While Canadian families generally have a healthy diet, eating a variety of fruits and vegetables, about 22% of families are still eating less healthy. Notably, they are more common in families with both parents working.

That’s why it’s important to emphasize that losing weight is more about controlling the amount you eat, like serving yourself half of your usual consumption for every meal. If you still get hungry 30 minutes after your meal, you can have a high-protein snack. Try to keep this discipline for all your meals, and you will lose weight successfully.

This process will help you reset the usual portions of food in your meal that your body needs. As you grow older, your body will adjust to the amount of food in relation to your physical activities.

Weight Loss Depends On What You Eat

Incidental Exercises With the Kids

If you ride the bus to and from your office, try to get off a few stops earlier and walk towards your work or home. You can also join a workout class or look for small pockets of time that you can squeeze in a bit of workouts, such as push-ups or squats.

During weekends, you can take your kids for a walk or a bike and enjoy the scenery in your local trail parks. You can also invite them for an excellent frisbee at the park and have fun with the whole family. There are tons of outdoor activities that Canadian families can enjoy as one unit!

Reduce Alcohol Intake

Some working moms developed a habit of drinking a glass of wine at the end of the day before they go to bed. However, limiting your alcohol intake is one of the best ways to lose weight. This discipline will help you reduce the consumption of calories and avoid poor food choices in between your drinks.

Canadians are known to be among those that drink more alcohol per capita, roughly 3.6 more than the world average. While social drinking is okay, it should still be done moderately to ensure that you don’t pack up on unnecessary calories.

Create Family Meals

Canadian families are known for being huge fans of home cooked meals, with 84% of them enjoying cooking at home. Unfortunately, only a few of them have the time to cook at home. When they do, they would most often cook meals consisting of burgers, spaghetti and meatballs, and stir fry meals. They are also among those that eat below the daily recommended minimum of vegetables. Survey respondents shared that lack of inspiration and motivation are challenges that prevent them from eating healthier.

Now that you know how to lose weight with your eating habits effectively, you need to find ways on your family’s meals as well. Many meal substitutions will also work for your weight loss program. Creating family meals will allow every member to eat the same food that you are taking by substituting your carbs with lower carb options. You may try a modified salad that has fewer carbohydrates that will help you more on your diet.

woman about to cook a meal

Intermittent Fasting

Many people are considering a fasting diet to lose weight faster. However, as a working mom, you can’t afford to lose your energy if you try this type of diet. This concept may be false because your body can adjust with your schedule of eating. You can try intermittent fasting by skipping an early breakfast as your introduction to this diet. After skipping breakfast, wait until your body tells you that you need to eat, then consume a high-protein breakfast that will make you feel full longer.

Seek Help

Losing the extra weight can be challenging. In fact, it may even push you to make significant lifestyle adjustments. If things get too overwhelming, don’t hesitate to ask help from knowledgeable nutritionists and weight trainers to recommend supplements that can help you lose some weight. Some supplements are proven to burn fat while providing you with the nutrition you need. Remember to be careful and have the right determination to lose weight.

As a working mother, the goal of losing weight should be accomplished along with the motivation of being healthy for the entire family. Use your family as an inspiration and you’ll soon see how quickly you’ll be able to lose excess weight.

What Are the Best Windows to Install for Your House in Ottawa?

0

Choosing new windows for your home can be a real chore, especially in Ottawa, where you have so many factors to consider. Ottawa is a city prone to harsh winters and hot summers; hence you need energy-efficient windows that are durable and able to resist damage from heat and storms. Moreover, you also want to maintain the character of your home with windows that are classy, stylish, easy to operate, and of course, within your budget.

windows inside a house in the living room

So how do you choose the best products and avoid top window replacement mistakes when shopping for new units? Keep reading to find out!

The list of windows available in Canada is probably inexhaustible; however, there are a few window styles that stand out to homeowners in Ottawa. These units are the most popular in Ottawa for their curb appeal, durability, affordability, and versatility. Let’s get to know a few of them.

Casement Windows

These are unitswith hinges by the side that open inwards and outwards, just like a door. They are one of the most popular windows not just in Ottawa, but all over the world, and it’s not too difficult to understand why. Casement windows work with almost all home looks. They would blend well in a traditional or more contemporary setting without breaking a sweat. Casement windows also offer an ease of operation and maintenance that is quite unlike many other units. Casements are also one of the most energy-efficient options available to you, especially with their multipoint locking system. They happen to be a perfect mix of efficiency, convenience, and versatility.

Double-Hung Windows

Double-hung windows have two operable sashes that can be lifted upwards and downwards. These windows will probably never go out as style and are even more popular than they were back then. A simple reason is the excellent ventilation they provide, which can be controlled depending on which of the sashes you choose to lift. Double-hung windows are also more affordable than many other options because of how common they are. You should consider them if you happen to be on a tight budget. Getting vinyl double-hung windows will help prevent potential air leaks and give you a very satisfying outcome.

Picture Windows

Picture windows offer a huge glass area designed to give you an unobstructed view of your surroundings. These windows are fixed and usually come in simple rectangular or square shapes. They are trendy in Ottawa due to their energy efficiency and ability to be combined with other window styles for more benefits:

  • Go with a picture window in the center and two casements by its side for optimal ventilation;
  • Another option is a combo of a picture window with two hung windows that add to aesthetics and overall house design.

The only downside might be the fact that these units offer no ventilation if installed individually. Still, it doesn’t stop the windows from being energy efficient, easy to clean and maintain, and aesthetically pleasing. Keep in mind, though, that these units are hard to install and require a professional who follows the CSA guidelines to be installed correctly.

Sliding Windows

Sliding windows need no introduction as they remain a popular choice in Ottawa because of their versatility, ability to let in much natural light, energy efficiency, and excellent ventilation. Sliding windows can function just like picture windows, offering extensive unobstructed views, but they come with a bonus by providing ventilation options, unlike picture windows.

They also offer a host of other benefits such as low long-term operational costs, ease of use, durability and well, beauty. If the interior of your home is something that should be shown off, do consider a sliding window; if not, you can always add some blinds to get additional privacy.

How can new windows add value to your Ottawa house?

You would be surprised at the impact that installing new windows could have on your house. You could derive immense value and satisfaction by simply installing new windows. What do we mean?

Cut down on energy bills

You wouldn’t have to spend so much on energy bills if you invest in energy-efficient windows with good Energy Star ratings. These windows will provide adequate insulation to ensure that your home can conserve heat. You would need to ensure that you look out for double or triple glazed glass to get the best of it. Vinyl or aluminum frames are also an excellent choice for energy efficiency.

Enhance your curb appeal on a budget

Investing in the right windows will add character to your home, giving it a modern or traditional feel, depending on what you prefer. It will also be a great way to entice potential customers if you ever plan to sell by choosing windows that provide a good view into the home.

Better soundproofing

Choosing double or triple glazed windows that provide adequate protection from noise boosts the value of your home and is always an added advantage.

Boost the security of your home

Windows designed for egress, for example, provide additional escape ways in cases of emergency, such as fire. Casement windows are a standard option for egress windows, but must meet certain building code criteria. Investing in double or triple-paned glass with durable frames and secure locks would make you feel safer and contribute to the value of your home.

Top-5 crucial mistakes to avoid when getting new windows

Canadian homeowners always strive to get the best products when replacing old windows, but unfortunately, they often overlook some crucial aspects. That is why we have gathered these top DON’TS for you to avoid some common pitfalls when shopping for new windows:

  1. Do not purchase new windows based on price only. The cheapest, just like the most expensive, might not be the best pick;
  2. Do not go with the same window styles, experiment and ask installers what will work best for your house;
  3. Do not neglect to choose the correct glazing and frames. The right ones will make your home much more energy-efficient.
  4. Do not overlook security issues. Ask your installer what hardware, glazing and sashes will get you the best security level.
  5. Do not DIY the installation of your new windows. Always go with the experts since window installation is a complex task requiring skills, tools, and experience to serve you correctly for many years to come.

The Final Thoughts

Ottawa has a good number of window styles to pick from without having to compromise on your style, budget, and convenience. Remember to look out for the right insulated glazing options, Energy Star ratings, frames, and window installation companies. Regardless of whatever your preference is, there are windows in Ottawa that will suit your needs.

How Many Apples in a Pie?

When it comes to making apple pie people wonder how many apples you need. Well, that depends on how many pies you plan to make and whether you want an even pie or an overstuffed pie. For a classic apple pie, you will probably need about 6-8 apples sliced and peeled. If you want a fuller pie then just add 3 or 4 more apples to the pie crust.

What Apples to use for Pie

We all have a favourite recipe for making apple desserts, but what apples do we use? With so many varieties of apples, some just won’t work for pies, since they are better suited for apple sauce or just as a snack.

Here are a few apples that work well for pies:

Apples like Macintosh or Red or Gren Delicious are better as sauces or mixed with one from the list of apples above for a good pie consistency.

How in the world are you going to pull together a last minute Halloween costume? Here are my top 10 easy last minute Halloween costume ideas!

Easy Last Minute Halloween Costumes

10 Easy Last Minute Halloween Costumes

Halloween can be a very fun day with dressing up, collecting treats, or by having a kids or adult Halloween party. We all know that when it comes time to shop for Halloween costumes, it can be very time consuming and frustrating as well. Searching for a last minute Halloween costume does not have to feel like a day-long chore. When choosing DIY Halloween costumes just be creative. These homemade last minute Halloween costumes are also easy on the budget.

1. Rock Star

For a DIY Rock Star Halloween costume, you need to find a pair of ripped jeans or a pair of jeans you don’t mind ripping. Add a black t-shirt or one that may be full of crazy colours. Get a guitar as a prop from a friend if you don’t already have one. If you can’t get any, there are ways you can make one out of foam core or cardboard. If you’re not keen on the guitar idea, you can always make a microphone or use a cell phone headset. Don’t forget to do something funky with your hair for this Halloween costume look!

2. Black Cat

A black cat costume is easy and perhaps the most popular quick last minute halloween costume I come across on Halloween night. For a girl or a woman, use a black gymnastics or ballerina outfit with black stockings and shoes. For a boy or a man, use black pants and a black shirt. Draw both cat faces with clown make up. You can twist together some black pipe cleaners for a tail and make or buy cat ears at the dollar store.

3. Ghost

A ghost is the easiest of all DIY Halloween costumes. All you need is an old white bed sheet and a pair of scissors. Drape the sheet over your child or yourself. Use a marker to mark a spot where the eye and nose holes need to be, then mark the length around the bottom that needs to be cut off if the sheet touches the floor. Make sure you or your child won’t trip. Cut the holes and you are done!

4. Angel

Creating an Angel Halloween costume can be accomplished by simply purchasing the wings and halo for a very inexpensive price (between $5 and $10 for both) from your local Halloween or dollar store. If you have a talent in crafts, you could even make these yourself. After these are purchased, your costume is pretty much complete. You simply need to dress in all white (an all white jogging suit or dress, or wrap the body in a white sheet or will due just fine). Add some light make-up that you already have on hand, and there you have your quick, last minute angel costume.

5. Vampire

All that is needed to purchase for a vampire costume is a set of Halloween make-up, which is inexpensive and even on Halloween is very easy to find at any Halloween or drug stores. Theses sets often times haves guides in regards to how the make-up should be applied, many of them also include fake blood. You will then need vampire teeth, which can be found at most dollar stores. If there is one handy, the costume may be completed with a black bed sheet for the cape; however, this is not a necessity. A simple black shirt and pair of black pants can be worn. Which will complete your quick vampire costume.

6. Witch

Making a quick witch costume is very, very simple. The only thing you really need to purchase is the witch hat, some make-up (possible dark green for the face), and a broom made out of straw. If you want a cape, you can purchase a very inexpensive one or you could even use a simple black bed sheet. For the costume, you can wear a black dress.

Face painting of little girl for Halloween

7. Cow

A cow costume for Halloween is a great idea because it is simple and extremely cheap. You are also likely to already have most of what you need. Clothing wise, you should wear either a white sweat suit or a white long-sleeved shirt and white pants. You’ll also want to wear black shoes. Next, you’ll need some dark brown or black felt or construction paper. Cut out patches or spots that you will then safety pin or glue to your clothing. If you want to add a tail, just cut one leg off of a pair of pantyhose and stuff is with cotton. All that is left is to pin the tail onto your pants. If you want to add a dash of humour, think about going as a chocolate cow or a strawberry cow.

8. Goth

A Goth Halloween costume is not only extremely easy to attain, but also requires only a few things. All you will need black lipstick, black eyeliner, black nail polish, and black clothing. White face paint and black hair spray is optional. All you have to do is dress yourself in all black and then add the face makeup. If you are looking to spice things up a bit, consider adding some fake piercings for the nose and / or lip. If you have light-coloured hair, it would be a good idea to top off the look with black hair spray.

9. Dryer Lint / Static Cling

Dressing up for Halloween as dryer lint or static cling is funny every time. All you need to pull this costume off is a sweater and sweat pants, dryer sheets, cotton balls, and safety pins. Wear your clothing inside out. Now all you need to do is safety pin the dryer sheets and cotton balls all over your clothing. If you want, you could always make your hair very frizzy or messy to add a special touch to this costume idea.

10. Tea Bag

A tea bag Halloween costume is so easy to make! All you do is take a trash bag and cut out leg and arm holes. Next, put yourself inside the trash bag and filled it with leaves. Finally, partially sealed the top of the trash bag with safety pins. After that attach some string and a strip of poster board that says a brand of tea that is popular like Lipton. If you find that you don’t want to fill the trash bag with leaves, you can always substitute them for crumpled up newspaper.

Signs of Sleep Apnea in Toddlers: Symptoms And Treatments

0

As with adults, toddlers are also affected by the condition of sleep apnea, which results in oxygen levels dropping whilst asleep. You will find below noticeable signs of sleep apnea in toddlers and which symptoms to look out for as well as what are the suggested treatments.

Signs of Sleep Apnea in Toddlers

Sleep apnea differs from snoring, although 10-20% of children who snore have sleep apnea. Signs associated with sleep apnea in toddlers include distressed snoring, bedwetting, and slowed growth, while treatment may involve nasal steroids.

What is Sleep apnea?

Sleep apnea is a sleep disorder that happens when you stop breathing while you sleep.

There are two types of Pediatric sleep apnea: obstructive sleep apnea and central sleep apnea.

A child with obstructive sleep apnea is caused by a blockage in the back of the throat or nose. Snoring is more noticeable since there is an airway obstruction.

The central sleep apnea happens when the part of the brain responsible for breathing doesn’t send the breathing muscles normal signals to breathe.

Sleep apnea: toddler symptoms

The main sign that a toddler is suffering from sleep apnea is when he or she has abnormally long pauses in breathing. It is important to understand that mild snoring from time to time (especially when a child has a cold) is perfectly normal.

In Baby & Toddler Sleep Solutions For Dummies, Lavin & Glaser highlight the following potential symptoms and warning signs for sleep apnea:

  1. very loud snoring
  2. snoring every night
  3. snoring in every position (mild snoring usually stops when tots roll over)
  4. thrashing during snoring (looking hungry for air)
  5. snoring causing child to wake up
  6. new/reactivated bed-wetting (sleep apnea can increase urine production)
  7. sleep shortage – overly tired, irritable, moody
  8. attention deficit (5%+ of attention deficit actually have sleep apnea)
  9. slowed growth

Sleep apnea and snoring

Alternatives to sleep apnea may relate to snoring, which can be down to a child being overweight, having a heavy cold, or suffering from allergies. As it is quite difficult to know whether a child has a problem with snoring or is suffering from sleep apnea, a sleep study also known as polysomnogram is able to identify between the two.

Treatment for sleep apnea in toddlers

If one is concerned that a child is snoring in a distressed manner or has identified some of the above potential warning signs, make an appointment to see the family doctor or a paediatrician. Lavin & Glaser identify that treatment for children who have been diagnosed as suffering from sleep apnea will typically include one of the following:

  1. nasal steroids (nose spray)
  2. surgery for constructive sleep apnea to remove tonsils
  3. surgery for constructive sleep apnea to remove tonsils and adenoids

Until the 1980s, the most common form of sleep apnea treatment involved undergoing a tracheostomy. This is an invasive procedure, which thankfully these days is now only used as a last resort. Another form of treatment involves using a C-PAP (continuous positive airway pressure), a device used to keep the airways open when the child is asleep.

Sleep Apnea in Toddlers: Symptoms And Treatments

As highlighted above, potential symptoms associated with sleep apnea in toddlers include distressed snoring and sleep shortage. Sleep apnea may be distinguished from snoring through attending a sleep clinic, while treatment typically involves nasal steroids and surgery to remove tonsils.

How to Manage Time With a Toddler

0

Managing your time can be tough, more so if you have babies or toddlers to care for. Here are some tips for busy moms on how to manage time with a toddler.

How to Manage Time With a Toddler

How to manage time as a stay at home mom

Home management can be a challenging task to say the least for moms, especially a stay at home mom. The challenge increases when you have a toddler who can’t help much, but need a lot of your attention and time. So, what does one do? Ignore the pile of laundry in the living room while you play with your toddler? Or let the television be babysitter while you catch up on chores? Actually, neither. With a bit of planning and some smart thinking, you can easily manage your time with your toddler and keep an organized and well-managed home.

Here are some tips for managing a home with toddlers!

Time management with a toddler: Home Management Priorities

How do you manage time with toddler? First things first, you need to know your priorities when it comes to managing home. Take ten to fifteen minutes to create a list of everything that is home-related and important to your family. Healthy meals? Put meal planning down as a priority. Clean clothes means laundry is a must. Evaluate each priority carefully to ensure that it really is a priority and not just something you think you have to do. For example, dusting everyday is not a priority unless someone suffers from an allergy to dust.

Delegate and Downgrade

Having a toddler around the house means you need to spend time with them, recharge yourself, and take care of the house as well. So, you need to get real and let something go. Delegating some chores frees up your time while still getting things done. Moreover, you don’t always have to delegate to a family member. How about a neighbour or a friend? Or even the babysitter? Alternatively, you can just stop doing something that isn’t essential to your family’s health and happiness. For instance, organizing the bathroom cabinet or the spice rack every fortnight.

Make a weekly shopping list

Shopping can be simplified in a huge way just by planning your trip and having a list of what you need. Try sorting your list based on where each item is located in the store so you don’t have to waste time going back and forth in the store with your toddler. Shopping with a list will cut a lot of time and frustration!

Schedule Weekly and Monthly Planning

Planning is key to a well-managed home. There are several home management apps as well as websites and eBooks available to help a mom menu plan and organize cleaning schedules. Spend half an hour each week and at the end of the month to plan your meals and home management projects so that you know what you need to focus on.

Manage Time with a toddler: Grocery shopping

How to manage time with a toddler while grocery shopping may be a task just barely above scrubbing the toilet on a mom’s list of things to do, but there is usually no way around it. There are ways to simplify the process and have you and your toddler in and out of the grocery store. It just requires a bit of planning!

Make grocery shopping fun for your toddler

Get your toddler excited about visiting the grocery store by having a toy shopping cart to your pretend play area. Let your toddler fill the shopping cart with empty food boxes or toy food. This will help your toddler to understand what happens at the grocery store and manage your time better while at the store.

Toddlers do not enjoy sitting still for long periods of time. Giving them something to do with their hands will keep them occupied far longer than simply sitting in the cart. Occupy your toddler by allowing to hold some of the food or help put a few items into the shopping cart. If you have a list your toddler may enjoy holding a piece of paper just like mom has. Small toys that can attach to the cart handle will entertain your toddler without getting lost in the store.

Bring a well fed toddler

Toddlers are not content to quietly sit in the cart when they are surrounded by so many things they want to eat. This will have a negative impact on not being able to manage time with your toddler at the store. It could mean having to leave the store due to a tantrum and having to come back at another time. Make sure your toddler has a good meal before going to the grocery store. It may help to have some snacks in your diaper bag that you can feed to you toddler in the event that they decide that they are still hungry while you are shopping.

Keep your toddler comfortable

Diaper padding only goes so far. Those hard shopping cart seats can be irritating to some toddlers. Consider making or buying a shopping cart cover to keep your toddler comfortable while shopping and. This will have the added benefit of preventing your toddler from being exposed to the myriad of germs that can be found on the shopping cart. Make sure to wash it after each use.

Go after naptime

Tired toddlers are not patient and this can make for a very frustrating shopping experience. Be sure that you are not planning your grocery shopping during your toddler’s normal naptime. It is best to go after your toddler has had a nap and had a chance to wake up for a few minutes. You can use the time after they wake up from a nap to feed them a quick snack before you go to the store.

How to Manage Time With a Toddler

Now that we share our tips on how to manage time with a toddler, it does not have to be overwhelming and exhausting. With a bit of planning and some careful evaluation, you can easily put together a list of must-dos for the house and grocery shopping, and then, kick back and enjoy playtime with your little one.

Applesauce is a comfort food that use to be considered a common type of mush. Today, over one hundred years later, applesauce is considered to be one of the healthiest desserts to still be served during school lunch. Not only is this the best homemade applesauce recipe nutritious and delicious, it is also very simple to make at home.

How to make healthy homemade applesauce

Learning how to turn an apple or apples into delicious applesauce is as simple as adding an apple or two to some simmering water. Allow the apple(s) to simmer until thoroughly softened. Making applesauce is literally that simple. No sugar or other additives are necessary for this wholesomely nutritious dessert. Even grip-rolling an apple over a hard surface or from hand to hand can soften an apple to provide an applesauce result.

Apple sauce in the crockpot

A crock-pot is a wonderful appliance for simmering apples throughout the day. Add a layer or two of whole apples and enough water to cover the apples. When the apples are completely softened, gently slice the apple or apples through the center and add a little margarine or butter to top off the hot applesauce for a sweet, rich, and creamy flavour. The peel will help to keep the applesauce in place while leaving the apple core and seeds in a semi-firm condition.

Whole apples that have been simmered to create applesauce can be placed in the refrigerator for future servings. The apple stays juicy and the flavor sweet while encapsulated in its peel. When baking precooked or fresh apples, be sure to add a fourth to a half cup of water and tightly cover the apples so they do not dry out.

When making applesauce in pure mush form, peel and core the apples before simmering. Slicing the apples into sections before simmering will result in a complete applesauce mush. Thinly sliced apples will cook more quickly and require less water to keep them hydrated. Should the apples produce too much liquid, pour off the excess fluid and continue to simmer, cook, or bake uncovered until the desired consistency is achieved. Stir occasionally to check for consistency.

Homemade cinnamon applesauce recipe

To add enhanced flavouring to applesauce, adding a touch of cinnamon can produce a wonderful flavour as well as cooking aroma. During the holidays, such as Thanksgiving and Christmas, simmering whole apples in a pot of water with 1/2 a tsp of cinnamon and a few cloves, not only provides wonderful aromas indoors, but also provides necessary humidity when the air is dry.

Applesauce recipe for freezing

Applesauce can be frozen. It freezes beautifully. Applesauce can be frozen in the individual compartments of ice cube trays and then popped into storage bags. These cubes can be placed in lunches frozen and will defrost during the course of the day. The defrosted applesauce cubes can also be added to oatmeal or added to the juice in a fruit salad for more natural flavor. The defrosted applesauce can also be warmed in a microwave, if desired.

What can I make with applesauce?

When apples are abundant, it is the perfect time to make applesauce. Applesauce is a side dish and perfect to accompany any meal. It is also a nice addition to breakfast especially served with oatmeal. Homemade applesauce can also be used in recipes calling for applesauce such as applesauce cake or applesauce bread. Applesauce in recipes is usually the strained variety. If preparing applesauce ahead for a recipe, check to see if the applesauce is sweetened or unsweetened. If the recipe calls for unsweetened applesauce, eliminate the sugar in the preparation of the applesauce.

Homemade applesauce is one of the easiest recipes to prepare for any cook. There are very few ingredients and the instructions are simple. They can be varied to suit anyone’s tastes. After trying homemade applesauce, the canned brands will not seem as good.

Ingredients for Applesauce

  • 2 pounds Macintosh or Cortland apples (about 4-5 apples depending on the size)
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1/4 to 1/2 cup white sugar(can substitute half of the white sugar with brown sugar)
  • 1/8 to 1/4 cup of water.
  • Optional ingredients: cinnamon, nutmeg, maple syrup, allspice to taste, or Red cinnamon candies (15 to 20).

How do you make homemade applesauce

Peel apples if skins are blemished or tough. Core and cut the apples into quarters and place in a medium sized sauce pan with a lid. Add 1/8 cup of water, reserving the rest if apples become dry. If desired, add cinnamon candies at this time to make the applesauce pink.

Bring the mixture to a boil and turn the heat to low – simmer for approximately 1/2 hour until apples are tender.

Strain apples through a wire mesh strainer into a medium sized bowl. Add 1/4 cup of the sugar to the warm mixture. It is important to add the sugar when the apples are warm so that it thoroughly dissolves. Taste and adjust sugar to personal taste, adding more sugar, if necessary.

Let mixture sit covered until it reaches room temperature.

Note: If not eaten, it should be refrigerated. Mixture will thicken once it is refrigerated.

Applesauce Variations

  • 1/2 tsp. cinnamon can be added to the apples when boiling, if desired.
  • Brown sugar can also replace the white sugar or a 50/50 mixture can be prepared.
  • If a chunkier applesauce is desired, do not strain the apples but mash them with a fork; however, if the apples are not going to be strained, it is preferable to peel them prior to cooking.

Feature #2: Secret Entrance to the Oceaneer Club (Youth clubs)

Disney cruise line is great for families specifically because of all the space that goes into the youth clubs. The space dedicated to a casino on other cruise ships is instead dedicated to youth clubs on Disney Cruise Line. The Disney Wish ship is no different and it takes it a step further with a secret entrance. The secret entrance is in the Grand Hall on deck 3 where you can check your children into the club. They can then take the secret entrance which will slide them down to deck 2 directly into the Oceaneer Lab. It’s so incredibly cool, I can only hope that it’s available for adults to try during the open house hours.

How incredible for all of those super-creative kids!

The last interactive area is “Hero zone”. A sports arena with fun challenging games where families can get involved in physical activity.

Guests will delight in this scrumptious smorgasbord of superior seafood, rustic game dishes, and tasty nods to the Frozen story. Of course, the sister’s favorite for dessert…chocolate!

Feature #8: A Nod to the Man Himself

A Walt Disney-inspired throwback-themed restaurant called 1923. The name 1923 is a nod to the year that the Walt Disney Company was founded. This gorgeous restaurant transports you back to Hollywood with that glitz and glam from the 1920s. It features renderings of old-school animation and Walt Disney himself. The diverse menu will mirror California’s unique blend of Asian, European, and South American cuisines. It will feature local ingredients like fresh produce, wild honey, and earthy pistachios.

The Disney Wish restaurant: Worlds of Marvel
Credit: Disney Destinations

Feature #9: Marvel Fans Unite!

The third restaurant onboard the Disney Wish is called Worlds of Marvel. The first-ever Marvel Cinematic Food Adventure. You’ll take an interactive role in an action-packed Avengers mission that unfolds around you. The highlight of this special event is a hands-on demonstration of the latest and greatest Pym Tech. The Quantum Core, which uses cutting-edge (and highly unstable) technology to shrink and grow targets at the push of a button. A few “misfires” will result in hilarious Ant-Man-style hijinks. The real trouble begins when an unexpected villain shows up with a fearsome army in tow, eager to get their hands on this powerful quantum technology.

All three of these restaurants (features seven, eight, and nine) are family-themed restaurants. They are part of Disney Cruise Line’s rotational dining, ensuring that each guest will get to enjoy the experience.

Of course, the highlights could go on and on including several themed adult areas such as Beauty and the Beast and the adult-only areas. There is so much more to see and do on the Disney Wish!

I can’t wait to set sail on the Disney Wish next year. I can help you plan a magical sailing. Request a free quote by visiting Jeremie at Pure Magic Vacations.

Depending on where you are, Fall may come upon you early. We all have the same calendar, but August marks a peculiar threshold. For some, it becomes a rally to savour the last bits of summer. Others impatiently wait for the return of Pumpkin Spice to all of their best pumpkin treats. Some interesting changes happen between the peak of summer hype and the impending onslaught of Autumn. We get peculiar mixes of climate as the season transitions; however, no fall element, even pumpkin spice, is equivalent to the iconic scene of stunningly brilliant autumn leaves.

My Favorite Transition

Whether you love full summer or full fall, there is something magical about these delicate transitional changes. I love to look forward to new things, but savouring the temporary gifts of the fluctuating seasons is what makes me the happiest. Everything is changing and it’s good to embrace change; however, it’s the metamorphic process that I like best. The time between summer and fall is a great negotiation I always love to take part in from summer shade to the brisk walks through colourful leaf-littered paths.

Autumn Colours in Paper Leaf Garland

Paper leaf garland is one of the best go-to ways to festoon any space with eye-catching decor. Whereas some decorations create a focal point for a scene within your surroundings, garland helps to transform an entire space and it becomes the connecting tissue for your decorated environment that holds the image together. The best thing about DIY fall paper leaf garland is, of course, the gorgeous fall colours that imitate the reds, oranges, and yellows of fiery and colourful autumn leaves. Easy craft paper makes for the best medium to display as elaborate a portrait as you wish with the right mix of these instantly recognizable shades.

4 Tips to Keep Your Kids’ Minds Healthy

2

The Ancient Greeks knew that the key to overall health was about conditioning the body and the mind. Athens was the home of both the gymnasium and Plato. Physical fitness is important, but so is developing beneficial learning patterns early on.

Children are more likely to continue exercising the mind when they learn to do it at a young age. Let’s look at a few ways kids can have some fun while giving their brains a workout.

4 Tips to Keep Your Kids' Minds Healthy

1. Online Coding Classes

Learning how to make apps, programs, and video games is a lot more fun than it seems. It’s never been easier to take online classes that teach kids how to write code and how to use coding languages that professionals use every day.

Make sure the program you sign up for teaches coding languages like Python for children aged seven or so, while older and more experienced kids or teens can learn Java, JavaScript, C#, and C++. Finally, the best classes are small, with a maximum of four kids per teacher.

Children will learn STEM skills they can apply in countless ways and the specific computer skills that open many doors when they’re ready to enter the workforce. Online coding classes are a perfect way to keep your child’s mind engaged from home, which explains their surge in popularity during the pandemic.

Knowing how to code will give them a leg up when it’s their time to hit the job market, but in the meantime, they’ll have so much fun that they won’t even realize they’re learning.

2. Music

Listening to music can be soothing and soul-nourishing in ways that are hard to describe in words, but playing a musical instrument is even more fun! There are lots of places you can stream free, high-quality music lessons for kids.

Children don’t need to play Chopin or Bach on the piano to have a lot of fun playing music! Just being able to jam is enough, even if it means hitting a percussion instrument in time with their hand. Learning how to play a musical instrument doesn’t have to be intimidating: children can play thousands of songs after learning just a few chords on the guitar, ukulele, piano, or any other instruments.

Introduce a wide range of music in your child’s life — let them listen to music their peers like, but also show them the sounds you love that you think they will too. You probably grew up hearing your parent’s favourite songs, and no doubt their love for these tunes influenced the way you heard and appreciated them. Do the same for your kids by playing your cherished music around the house.

Music can expand your mind and help it grow, but it’s also calming when you need to be soothed, or it can be fun and upbeat when it’s time to party. In other words, whatever headspace your child is in, there’s an appropriate kind of music.

Finally, while young kids tend to love “kids music,” it doesn’t mean that you can’t expose them to more complicated forms of music intended for older people.

3. Socializing

Humans are social animals, and we feel happy and restored when surrounded by friends and family. COVID-19 made in-person gatherings impossible, but that is changing now in certain places as case numbers are down and the vaccine rollout continues.

So long as you comply with what medical professionals and your government say is safe, spending quality time with friends is an indispensable aspect of mental health for your kids. If it’s warm enough, go outside for a family BBQ or a nice meal. If it’s colder, dress for the conditions so you can remain comfortable outdoors.

Getting quality time with close friends and family is a fundamental aspect of your kids’ healthy development. If being on a Zoom call is the only way to see people, do it. It’s very likely that they’ve had more than a few Zoom calls by now and may be tired of them. Just be careful to ensure your child doesn’t go too long without seeing close friends and relatives.

Who hasn’t come away from a visit with those close to us feeling bolstered, lighter, and happier?

4. Physical Exercise

Poets are known for being careful thinkers, but they have an old tradition of going for long walks. Getting fresh air, seeing new sights, and moving your body around clears the mind.

Whether it’s playing recreational or competitive sports, or simply going for a stroll, your kids’ mind will feel better and lighter after they get some exercise. Sometimes exercise is linked in unhealthy ways to body image, which is a fraught topic.

It’s good to avoid this subject altogether with young kids and keep the exercise simply about playing. Children don’t need to think about models, bodybuilders, or even professional athletes. Exercise can clear the mind and help us feel better, but be mindful not to mention anything about body image or how it will change people’s appearance, even as an improvement.

boy listening to music

Parents need to be extra mindful of how their children are feeling and use any of the above approaches if they seem helpful. It can be hard to tell if people’s altered mood is because of the pandemic or for some other unrelated reason. Neil Young once sang that “we are only what we feel,” so implement these activities in your child’s life to improve their mood and ensure they’re safe, productive, and happy.
