For many of us, fall is the most favourite time of the year, the weather is cooler and the air is crisp. It is a time when we enjoy comfort foods like soups, stews, and of course the flavourful spices used when cooking or baking in recipes like this best baked pumpkin donuts with maple cinnamon glaze and chocolate drizzle.
For this recipe for baked donuts, you will be using pumpkin puree and not pumpkin pie filling. Visit a pumpkin patch to get one fresh for baking and make your on puree. If you are not a fan of pumpkin then check out these Apple Cider Donuts or these Blueberry Mini Baked Cake Donuts.
Do you bake or fry donuts?
When it comes to to donuts, they can either be baked in the oven or deep fried in oil in a pan and now you can even use your air fryer. The fried donuts are yeast recipes that need to rise, light in texture, and medium brown. The baked pumpkin donuts are smaller, baking powder instead of yeast and more compact.
Baked Donuts
If you are counting calories, watching your fat intake or monitoring your cholesterol then you may want to stick to baked pumpkin spice donuts. The temperature they are baked at will give them a paler colour than fried and will be soft inside and out. This is the healthier choice to make.
Fried Donuts
If you aren’t one to worry about the calories and don’t want to spend hours in the kitchen, then fried donuts are for you. It only takes a few minutes to cook them this way. They will be crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. This is the more favoured way to eat donuts, but the not so healthy option.
How to store baked donuts
There are a few ways to store pumpkin donuts to keep them fresh like plastic wrap or aluminum foil; however, I like to use an air tight container for keeping them fresh longer. They can be kept on the counter or stored in the fridge. If you decide to freeze your homemade baked pumpkin donuts to use at a later date, they can be kept for about 3 months.
