How To Eat Smart During The Holiday Season

16

It’s easy to gain pounds during the Christmas holiday season. It’s also easier than you think to eat smart during the holiday season!

We all know how to hard it is to avoid gaining weight during the holidays with all the delicious dishes offered at parties, dinners and get-togethers. For those hosting holiday parties on a budget, the healthier food is often the less expensive choice! So here are some tips on how to make smarter food choices this season!

How To Eat Smart During The Holiday Season

How To Eat Smart During The Holiday Season
Christmas Dessert

Eat Smart Before The Event

Eat before you go to parties or events with lots of snacks or sweets, even if it is something like holiday cookie decorating. Never go to an event famished. Smart eating prior to the event include fresh fruit and yogurt, cheese and crackers, soup, a lean sandwich, protein bars, etc. This will help control eating and loading up a plate with sugary or fatty snacks.

Or make a deal for weekend parties to reward eating smart or dieting during the rest of the week. Eat healthy, then keep in mind that a particular party can be a splurge, sort of like a barter system. Just keep the calorie intake within reason!

Survey Food Options At Events

Upon arrival at a party, quickly take a look at all the options, such as buffet tables, hors d’oeuvre plates, and snacks. Fill up a plate with healthier choices first so by the time the plate is empty, hunger pangs have gone away. Avoid bowls of mixed nuts, chips and dip, or Chex mix.

Decide Between Naughty and Nice Foods

Know what food is more suitable then others. Maybe choose one naughty food and all the rest can be nice foods to ensure a healthier outcome and that you eat smart. Decide on a strategy: eat a couple smaller appetizers, then only snack on veggies, or choose to eat only lean proteins and low-fat foods, such as salmon, meatballs, shrimp cocktail, or meat satays.

How To Eat Smart During The Holiday Season

Naughty foods:

  • Pastry appetizers
  • Spinach dip and bread chunks
  • Anything bacon-wrapped
  • Buffalo wings, especially with sauce
  • Creamy or thick dips
  • Carmelized nuts, apples or other fruits
  • Sugary cocktails
  • Cotton candy
  • Frosted holiday cookies
  • Queso dip and chips
  • Sugary sodas
  • Eggnog
  • Fruitcake
  • Swedish meatballs (because of the cream)
  • Creamed vegetables
  • Pecan pie
  • Roast beef cold cuts
  • Creamy pasta dishes
salmon and shrimp

Nice foods:

  • Plain meatballs or chicken and shrimp on skewers
  • Salsa
  • Nuts in shells
  • Green salads without heavy dressing
  • Raw vegetables
  • Low-fat chicken or shrimp salads or dips
  • Deviled eggs made with low-fat ingredients
  • Carpaccio (beef or tuna)
  • Tuna
  • Hummus and pita chip
  • Candy Cane Caprese Salad
  • Bruschetta
  • Seafood such as smoked salmon that is served alone without lots of sauces
  • Fruit salad
  • Fruit pie
  • White wine
  • Lean meats like turkey or ham cold cuts
  • Popcorn
  • Regular sugar cookies with no frosting
  • Sushi, no tempura or rich sauces

Always Limit Alcohol

Alcohol can be a big problem. Not only do many alcoholic beverages have an obscene amount of calories or sugar, but after a couple it can cause one to not care what they eat! With mixed drinks, use club soda, tonic or low-calorie diet sodas. Choose light beer and remember that five ounces of wine is a serving (white is a better option then red). Drink a water or diet soda in between alcoholic beverages.

Dumbbells with a running shoe

Exercise A Little More….

Increase the usual exercise routine in order to burn off extra calories from the excess of holiday eating and treats. Do this by waking up a little earlier, or increasing the exercise routine by one or two more sessions per week.

The holidays should be a fun time filled with family, friends, good food, and great times. Don’t stress out about limiting food options, just eat smart as much as possible in order to keep off those extra five Christmas pounds.

Crème Brulée Gingersnap Cookies Recipe

One of my favourite holiday traditions is to get in the kitchen with my family and bake. We love to make cookies and cakes to indulge in, and there is no greater joy than sharing fresh baked goods with friends and family and seeing their happy faces. Out of all of the treats and sweets we prepare, this Crème Brulée Gingersnap Cookies recipe is everyone’s favourite. Not only is it delicious, but also, it is unique, and is generally a welcome distraction from the sea of sugar cookies the holidays are known for.

Seeing Beyond the Surface with Aye-Aye Gets Lucky – Review

101

Seeing beyond the surface of what we see is a great skill children to learn. This allows them to understand and appreciate the world around them. Author and Academy Award nominee, Terri Tatchell is developing a series of books called Endangered & Misunderstood to help children to become aware of some of the creatures on our planet that are are not known to be endangered in a fun way. They asked us if my family would like to see beyond the surface of the aye-aye in the first book of this series Aye-Aye Gets Lucky. We were excited to get to know a bit more about this amazing animal.

What’s Aye-Aye Gets Lucky about?

Terri Tatchell’s story is about Aye-Aye (a long-fingered lemur) who happens to be a bit of a trickster. He did one prank too many, and fell out of favour with the humans he lived near in Madagascar. A flying fox teaches him that his tricks got him into this situation and that he must find a way to get the humans to love him again. Aye-Aye figures out how to change the human’s minds and they see beyond his exterior and trickster-nature to love him.

Seeing why Aye-Aye’s story so important

Deforestation and hunting are two big reasons why the aye-aye is endangered. The lack of trees in their habitat has caused them to become displaced animals by destroying their habitat. Hunting these animals for the pet trade, for food and as trophies has caused for the aye-aye’s numbers to rapidly decrease.

There is also the issue of the aye-aye and its middle finger. The Aye-Aye uses its long middle finger to extract larvae and grubs to eat. Legends say the aye-aye uses it to pierce the hearts of sleeping villagers. This also added to the unpopularity of this animal.

The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has classified the aye-aye as Endangered on the Red Data List and have a very high risk of extinction in the very near future. Terri Tatchell hopes, with more awareness and books like Aye-Aye Gets Lucky, we can help to increase the aye-aye’s numbers and save its habitat.

Our thoughts about Aye-Aye Gets Lucky

My son is a HUGE animal lover. He really enjoys reading Aye-Aye. He was sad to learn why the villagers became cautious of Aye-Aye’s presence around the village. My son understands that the villagers were upset with Aye-Aye. but it took a bit of discussion to explain why Aye-Aye was no longer welcome and fearful of him.

Aye-Aye meeting with Flying Fox was a favourite part of the book for my little guy. My son likes the flying fox and liked the advice she gave Aye-Aye to solve his problem. My guy also liked the friendship that Aye-Aye and Flying Fox created between each other.

The illustrations in Aye-Aye are really gorgeous. They helped to really bring the words of the story to life. Many of the images has movement and the colours are beautiful and vivid. These features of the pictures also helped my son understand the words of the page better.

The bookmark is a great product to have with this book. It lets us save our spot in Aye-Aye if we need to stop reading.

I love the idea of the postcard. It acts as a way to send someone a message and share awareness of this book series.

My family loves word magnets! Having the Endangered & Misunderstood Aye-Aye Gets Lucky Word Magnets allows us to learn some of the important words and phrases used in this story.

The notepad is a great item to have. It allows for children to jot down ideas or to draw some of the friends they discovered in this book.

Learning and seeing beyond the surface of appearances

My son and I really enjoyed reading Aye-Aye Gets Lucky! This story helped us to become aware of why the aye-aye is endangered and to get us seeing beyond the stories told about this amazing animal. The additional items are fun to have and help to let others become interested in the Endangered & Misunderstood series and their cause. This bundle of items would make for an excellent holiday gift idea! We are so happy to learn so much about the aye-aye. This book is a fabulous addition to our home lbrary!

Hands-On Learning Fun with Osmo – Review

143

Learning can be done in so many different ways thanks to technology. Devices are now giving a helping hand to kids to improve skills various areas they would learn at school. Osmo is a system that brings hands-on learning to kids with the use of a device. Osmo asked my family if we would like to try a system out to see if we could have hands-on learning fun. We were really excited to see what we could discover with this system!

How is Hands-On Learning fun with Osmo?

The Osmo Play System is combines digital gameplay with physical interaction for children to experience fun and learning. The twelve games they have available teach creativity, computer science, and drawing. Users must have either a compatible iPad or Fire tablet to use this system (we received a system compatible for the iPad for this review).

Below are the products we received from Osmo:

  • Osmo Genius Starter Kit (compatible with iPad and Fire Tablet)
  • Coding Jam

Getting the learning off to a “genius” start

There are a lot of fun kids can have with Osmo’s Genius Play System. There are five games kids can get lost in fun playing while learning. These games are Tangram, Words, Newton, Masterpiece, and Numbers.

Each game helps children to gain new skills or improve upon learning skills. What is interesting about this kit is that Osmo is able to see and react to your child’s real-life moves. A great feature of this system is how kids are rewarded for completing games. It is cute and amusing, encouraging kids to want to keep learning through play.

Hands-on spatial and visual learning

Getting kids aware of how shapes can be manipulated in different ways is important for learning. Tangram from Osmo helps to improve on this skill in a tangible way. Kids move around seven shapes into different configurations to create fun images.

My daughter had a ball manoeuvering these shapes around. The mirror above the playing surface helped the system let my girl know if she was getting close to putting the pieces in the right spot and when she had successfully put each image together.

Word learning at its funnest

My girl is great at reading words, but she could use a bit of assistance when it comes to spelling them. The Words game is a great tool to help her improve on spelling, as well as her vocabulary.

The games my daughter played were really fun. The system helped her to begin to recognize how words are formed. She was then tested by racing Uncle Fred to spell different words with the tiles. I liked that the system was able to recognize whether tiles were in the way or if they were the incorrect ones in a word. It allowed her to focus on spelling the words faster.

Physics fun for children

Newton brings fun to learning the basics of physics for kids. Users have to guide bouncing balls falling on the screen to a drop in a specific area. The game becomes more difficult as you progress and when you include objects like the Osmo Tangram shapes. A download of this game onto your device is required before playing

The Osmo Pad may be used (not included in the Genius Starter Kit), or any blank white surface such as a sheet of paper or cardstock. We found this game to be interesting. As my daughter moved the lines by erasing the lines, she was able to redirect the balls on the screen. It is a wild game to play!

Getting your numbers in order

Math is an area I would love for my kids to become better at. Numbers is a math game that helps kids improve their counting skills using number and dice tiles.

My daughter loves swooshing the number tiles underneath the mirror to get the correct number combinations or to complete equations. I loved how the system could see if the tiles my girl used were the right ones. She has a blast playing this games.

Hands-On Learning Fun with Osmo

Drawing fun at hand

Drawing past time for my daughter. She loves to create pictures for stories she dreams up or for presents to gift to our family. Masterpiece is a game that allows users to learn how to draw pictures by having images as lines to trace. A download of this game onto your device is required before playing.

This is my daughter’s favourite game to play! She traced the lines of many images to create works of art she could colour in. The cutest part of this game is seeing a video of her creating a work of art in a time lapsed video she is able to share with loved ones. We have to peel her away from the tablet to get her to stop playing this game.

Hands-On Learning Fun with Osmo

Dance to the coding

Coding is an area of learning my daughter is excited about jumping into. Coding Jams helps to broaden the learning fun! This game is separate from the Little Genius Starter Kit and is sold separately. Users can compose their own arrangements using Osmo’s Building Blocks into patterns and sequences.

Hands-On Learning Fun with Osmo

Coding Jams is a perfect game for my little one to play! She got right into putting some of the blocks together to create cute arrangements and dance moves to play out. My daughter could play with this game all day! She really loves seeing the results of her coding on the screen. It is really fun to see!

Learning hands-on fun kids will love

My daughter is constantly asking to go on our tablet after using our Osmo Play System to improve her learning skills! Each game challenges and entertains her while having objects give her hands-on learning. We love how intuitive the system is to give her assistance when she needs it. The rewards and little extras engage my daughter to want to keep learning through play. It was a great early gift for my family to receive as an early holiday gift!

25

I have gathered up 15 fantastic homemade essential oil beauty gift ideas for how to make a gift from the heart that anyone would love, using aromatherapy.

Homemade Essential Oil Gift Ideas

What is Aromatherapy?

But what is aromatherapy, exactly, and how can the average person benefit? Aromatherapy is not a cure-all, but it can be an effective way to deal with real world realities.

The word aromatherapy refers to the practice of using scents of various essential oils, derived from plants. These essential oils can be used to change your mood, relax your mind, boost your immune system, even help with bodily functions. Just three to five drops of essential oil in your preferred medium is all that is needed. All of the essential oils are available at your local aromatherapy store or online. Depending on the store, they may also have additional accessory products mentioned here. Some of them like lavender, are fairly common and inexpensive. But others, like Jasmine, are very expensive and rare.

Ways To Use Essential Oils

There are four different wonderful ways to use essential plant oils.

The most common way to use essential plant oils is in a massage oil. Simply put a few drops of essential oil in a bottle of massage oil, and the oil is absorbed through the skin.

For those that like taking baths, there is a wonderful option. Get a bottle of plain bath gel, put just a few drops of essence in the gel, run a hot bath, and add gel.

The third option is to spray essential oils. Simply get a little pump or spray bottle, fill it with room temperature water, and put a few drops of essence in. Then just spray the essence either in the air, on your pillow before bed, or even directly on your body.

The last option is the simplest: get an aromatherapy diffuser. It works just like those commercial scent diffusers, except you control exactly what you will smell. Just put a few drops of essence on a small pad, then plug in the diffuser.

What Essential Oils Do

There is a whole list of essential oils and what they do. Here are just three of them: lavender, tea tree, and ylang-ylang.

The name lavender is derived from a Latin word lavare that means “to wash”, and that is exactly what lavender does. It washes away stress. Using the scent to fill a room, it slows a busy mind and brings peace, in order to fall asleep gently and have sweet dreams. Use lavender in bath gel or massage oil and it will bring whole body relaxation, to loosen up stiff muscles, and ease away tensions.

Tea tree has another use entirely. It helps pump up your immune system. When used in a diffuser, it will help feel awake if you’re tired. If used in a bath, it will make you feel energized if you are sick.

Ylang-ylang has effects that are similar to lavender, in that it helps to relax you, but in a different way. Ylang-ylang helps you to shed inhibitions when used in a scent diffuser. When used in a bath or sprayed from a water bottle, it has a direct physiological effect. Men and women both will experience increased blood flow to certain areas of their bodies.

3 Ways Coding Can Benefit Your Kids

6

Do your kids love video games? Every mom knows it can be a challenge to limit screen time. When you spend so much of your time on screens yourself, it isn’t easy to know how much is too much for your kids. However, you may be able to turn their screen time into something more productive. Coding courses for kids are becoming more and more popular in Ottawa and around North America as parents realize that coding is becoming an essential job skill. From basic HTML to Python, JavaScript, and C++, learning a programming language is a huge asset in many careers.

3 Ways Coding Can Benefit Your Kids

3 Ways Coding Can Benefit Your Kids

Coding Courses in Ottawa

Local moms can find coding camps in Ottawa that run during the summer or evening and weekend coding courses during the school year. Summer camps tend to last a couple of weeks and kids learn in an immersive environment every day, while school-term courses involve a couple of hours each week for the length of the term.

If your kids love playing video games, whether they’re console games or phone apps, ask if they’d like to learn how they work and how to make their own. Coding camps start by teaching them the foundational skills they need to program. As kids progress, they learn the more advanced programming languages and tools they need to express their own creativity by modifying and building their own games.

How Kids Benefit from Coding

#1 Better Math Skills

There’s a close relationship between programming and math, but they’re not the same thing. To start with, advanced programming will introduce mathematical concepts like trigonometry, which is essential for calculating arcs and the movement of a projectile.

As more advanced coders play around with what they can do, they will find places where they need mathematical tools to find the answer. Programming gives them the motivation to learn these math concepts first, and that can make learning the math skills easier.

Learning to code also improves kids’ problem-solving skills. It flexes the same muscles you use to approach a math problem, with logic and precision.

#2 A Creative Outlet

Coding can be just like learning how to draw or build something, it’s just done on a computer. It’s another way kids can explore their creativity and make something unique. While from the outside, coding can sometimes look computational and mathematic, it’s also a means to a creative end.

Coding courses show kids how the commands they input change the end result. They can start playing around with video games making changes and eventually even designing some of their own stuff.

#3 Career and Education Opportunities

Computer sciences, video game design, app development, web development, and more are all big growth industries. When you sign your kids up for coding camp, you’re opening a door for them in the future if they want to pursue video games, web development, or computer sciences in school and as a career.

Even if they choose not to pursue computer sciences, learning how to code is like learning a language. No matter what you do later in life, it will be a huge job asset.

You might be surprised how early kids can start learning how to code. Find a coding camp in Ottawa and learn more about signing up your kids.

Star Wars Land: Everything You Can’t Miss at Galaxy’s Edge

12

It’s a great time to visit Star Wars Land at Walt Disney World and Disneyland! The twin attractions opened earlier this year and will complete phase two of construction by the beginning of 2020. That means Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge, or Batuu as they refer to it on the inside, will finally be fully open and guests can experience this section of the parks the way it was intended. For your next Disney vacation, don’t forget to get a drink at Oga’s Cantina, bring your sunglasses, and wear sandals on Batuu as it can get very hot!

Star Wars Land: Galaxy’s Edge

Here are some Galaxy’s Edge experiences you can’t miss while you are at Disneyland or Disney’s Hollywood Studios!

Millennium Falcon Smugglers Run

This simulator attraction opened with the rest of Galaxy’s Edge in 2019, but it’s going to be a huge part of Star Wars Land and beyond. The technology allows the ride experience to change, but the current version is something you will want to experience as your operate controls in the Millennium Falcon cockpit to complete a smuggling mission for Hondo Ohnaka. The real-time controls make it so every flight experience is different. As a rider, you can fill the role of pilot, gunner, or engineer. Having a job while you ride that significantly affects the outcome is a totally unique thing you have to try at least once.

Oga’s Cantina

The cantina is inspired by the Mos Eisley Cantina on Tatooine. It’s a small lounge without much seating, but the drink menu is huge and the atmosphere is unlike anything else. Oga’s Cantina is the best way to immerse yourself in the world of Star Wars while you visit Galaxy’s Edge. The beverages served there are not all alcoholic, but they are all very fun. The experience at Oga’s changes from breakfast to lunch, so make sure you stop by twice. Be sure to snap a selfie with DJ R3x as well. The Relic from another Star Wars Adventure has now landed himself a new gig spinning tunes for the patrons of the cantina.

Savi’s Workshop

Have you ever secretly dreamt of becoming a Jedi? Of creating your own custom handbuilt lightsaber? Dream no further! Galaxy’s Edge allows you to continue the ways of the Force with Savi’s Workshop at Black Spire Outpost. A group of “gatherers” from the workshop will guide you through this very special construction process. A lightsaber is a Jedi’s greatest weapon, or a Sith Lord’s most ruthless weapon in battle, so be sure to choose your hilt theme and kyber crystal carefully! There are four themes to choose from: Peace and Justice, Power and Control, Elemental Nature, and Protection and Defence. The heart of your lightsaber is available in blue, green, purple, and red. With your lightsaber at your side, the wrath of the First Order will be no match for an aspiring Jedi or Sith! Be aware that this experience requires an advanced reservation.

The biggest set piece of all in Star Wars Land will still be the amazing Black Sprire Marketplace which is full of little pockets and shops that sell merchandise from local craftsmen on the planet of Batuu. Visit the Toydarian Toymaker for unique toys that work as in-world items rather than simple Star Wars Branded souvenirs. Black Spire is brimming with unique shops to explore and lots of hidden secrets to discover.

Interactive Elements

Don’t forget to download the Play Disney Parks app before you visit Star Wars Land 2020. Set up a profile in the Datapad feature of the app and use it to interact electronically with the environment. You can hack controls, decipher messages, perform tasks and even communicate with droids. The app allows you to pick what side you will be on as the region is currently in political turmoil. The rising resistance is always clashing against the occupying First Order.

After choosing which model you prefer, you’ll be provided a blueprint and a basket for parts to begin your very own droid-making experience! Once completed, your droid will be paired with a remote control and a box to carry it in! A customized droid is a great souvenir to bring back from your travels to Batuu! 17 Christmas Tree Crafts For Kids

17

There’s something about Christmas tree crafts that really get you into the holiday spirit. I’m happy to provide you with the following 17 fun crafts, appropriate for kids of all ages.

If your kids are on the young side, you’ll want to help them with some of the projects. But, that means you get to have fun too! Keep reading, for a brief description of a few of the crafts on this list.

Yarn-Wrapped Christmas Tree Ornaments

These are really cute ornaments that don’t require any special skills. Cut cardboard into Christmas tree shapes. Haphazardly wrap with the yarn and decorate with colourful pom-poms of various sizes. Glue a loop of yarn on the back of each ornament and they’re ready to hang.

Ribbon Christmas Trees

I’ve seen these adorable little ribbon Christmas trees on various blogs. I love them! This project is a great way to use up ribbon scraps, don’t you think? These particular instructions call for wood sticks that come with square blocks to insert them into. However, I’ve also seen them made with small tree branches for more realistic look.

Simply cut ribbon into small pieces. Tie onto dowels or sticks and then trim the ribbon into a Christmas tree shape. Use them to decorate packages or even your holiday tree.

Terra-Cotta Christmas Trees Craft

For this project you need three terra-cotta pots, suitable for stacking one on top of the other. Paint the pots with acrylic paint. More than one coat is probably necessary. Attach small decorations to the tree with a hot glue gun and glue a wooden star on top. Use these as small table centerpieces or even to decorate a fireplace mantel.

Puzzle Piece Christmas Trees Craft

This is a really cute way to recycle puzzles with missing pieces. Paint the back of several pieces green and a few pieces red, black and white. Once the paint is dry, arrange the green pieces to resemble the tree. Attach a couple of black pieces for the trunk. Decorate with the red and white pieces. Easy-peasy!

DIY Santa’s Workshop Christmas Ornament

16

Part of the fun of the holidays is making Christmas ornaments. This Santa’s workshop ornament is so cute, don’t you think? Not only that, it’s one your kids can make when they’re looking for something new to do on a Saturday afternoon or during Christmas vacation.

You may not have everything in your craft supply closet, to make these. But, it’s easy to find what you need at your local craft store or even online. Necessary supplies include Popsicle sticks, a black Sharpie, glue, artificial snow, twine, red and white paint, scissors, Christmas confetti shapes and red craft foam.

DIY Santas Workshop Ornament
DIY Santas Workshop Ornament

If you don’t eat a lot of Popsicles, there’s no reason to start. The alternative is to buy a pack of craft sticks when you purchase the other supplies. The sticks are really affordable and your kids can make lots of different things with them.

To make the pole, paint the craft stick with red paint. Then add diagonal white stripes. For the sign, cut the craft foam into an arrow or sign shape, gluing artificial snow on the edges. Print “Santas Workshop” across the centre.

Form a small piece of twine into a loop and glue it to the back of the stick, as shown. Using the confetti shapes or other small decorations embellished the pole to your liking. That’s it… easy-peasy!

If you’re in a really creative mood, you could even paint Santa or Rudolph’s face on the foam. Stickers would be a fun idea too. One of the best things about this kind of Christmas ornament craft is that there’s no set-in-stone rule. You’re only limited to your imagination.

Connect During the Holidays with Samsung Canada #Review

Being able to connect the ones you love during the holiday season is a challenge. Smartphones have made being close to family and friends an alternative to physically being together. Having the right device to get the job done is key to making this process work well. Samsung Canada’s Galaxy A70 smartphone is a powerful yet affordable device that provides features people are looking for in a smartphone to be closer to the ones they love. They asked my family if we would like to see if we could connect with each other this holiday season using this device and we could not wait to try it out!

Here are some of the features that the Galaxy A70 smartphone have to offer to help connect my family:

  • Infinity-U Display
  • Triple Camera
  • Superfast charging
  • Fast CPU speed.

Viewing is big deal with Samsung Canada

Where on the hunt for a smartphone, one of the features I love to have is a big screen. The Galaxy A70 boasts a 6.7-inch full-frontal glass, edge-to-edge screen. Its SAMOLED Infinity-U Screen which brings looking at your phone and streaming videos and games more to life.

Whether I connect with loved ones on a video chat or am viewing a great movie, the quality of the images are sharp and clean. I was floored by how nice images and photos come out on this screen. Viewing shows and films are lifelike.

Triple the camera fun

It is three times the fun with the cameras on the Galaxy A70. Three cameras helps users capture larger than life images. An Ultra-Wide Camera gives a 123-degree view for Ultra Wide panoramic shots. Its 32MP (F1.7) camera provides bright, clear photos all day. The 5MP Depth Camera works to adjust the depth of field and taking those intimate shots.

These cameras are really easy to use. I love how, with the use of my fingers, I am able to make adjustments to help me capture beautiful shots. One of my favourite functions to use when snapping pics on this phone is the light adjuster. All I have to do to add or remove light from a photo is slide the light adjustment bar to get the perfect picture. Taking photos helps my littles and I connect through the memories we capture.

Express yourself(ie)

Who doesn’t like taking selfies? Adding an extra bit of personality to these shots make taking them so much fun! Users can create and personalize an AR emoji, then they can take a selfie in Mask Mode to bring their emoji into the real world. People are able to decorate shots with AR stickers, stamps, and frames for photos to add a bit of whimsy to their shots!

My kids and I love creating mini versions of ourselves with this feature. It was funny to see how we looked as characters and to get to change how we looked. We found it easy to go through this feature and to see us in different situations.

Supercharged power

I am not a fan of my phone when it is almost dead. When on an assignment or on-the-run, being without power on a smartphone is not ideal. The A70 is equipped with a 4,500mAh (typical) battery (This depends on the amount you use your smartphone and other factors). This allows this device to handle more video and more pictures. This smartphone has an efficient 25W Super Fast Charging technology your device is fully powered, and ready to go in a flash.

It was so great to be able to get charged up and be ready to go with the A70. It took about an hour for my device to go from being at a low percentage of power to fully charged. This is great, especially when I forget to charge my phone the night before a long day at work.

Connect with less worries

Connecting with loved ones on a smartphone is a huge draw for owners to look out for when choosing a device. I would like to feel reassured that your phone has my back while I use it. The A70 boasts two fabulous features to help protect users while they use this phone.

The Samsung Secure Folder allows users to create secret files on your device that is encrypted and secure. It provides and extra layer of protection to the files, documents and photos you want to keep hidden. I loved being able to store certain files and lists I want kept away from my kids to while they use my phone for play.

Connect For The Holidays with Samsung Canada
Secure Files section of Samsung Canada’s Galaxy A70 smartphone.

Users are also able to personalize the protection on their phone. The A70 provides the ability for users to hold their phone up to their face in order to unlock your phone. It works with a Face Recognition technology to guard your phone from allowing others to get in to your device.

There is also an on-screen biometric fingerprint scanner that can fingers in a wink of an eye. This provides quick and simple access to your device when you need it.

I personally did not use the Face Recognition technology or the on-screen biometric fingerprint scanner. They are great methods of security to make your phone private and personal to the user. I am happy with being able to use a difficult password to access my device.

An assistant at your fingertips

Bixby is the assistant that is built into the A70 that helps users to use their device more efficiently. This feature manages phone features so users don’t have to navigate through their phone to find something. All users have to do is speak to Bixby for assistance!

Connect For The Holidays with Samsung Canada

My kids loved meeting Bixby and having it answer their questions and connecting them to  different areas on this device. They found Bixby fun to use and engaging. It is a great tool to have on hand!

Connecting made fun and easy with Samsung Canada

The Samsung Galaxy A70 is a fun way to connect to the ones we love during the holiday season and beyond! I love being able to stream movies and television shows with the help of its SAMOLED Infinity-U screen. Taking photos is a snap with this device’s triple cameras and AR Emoji feature. We like using the security folder on this phone to keep saved documents and files private. Bixby helped my kids get around this smartphone easily. We are so pleased to have this powerful little phone! Connecting this holiday season is made more fun because of it, and since it is affordably priced, it can make a great gift idea!

Make the Most of Your Child’s Registered Education Savings Plan

7

The cost of college is increasing every year, and the personal debt crisis is at a fever pitch. Because of this, young professionals are taking decades of their working career to pay off their education debt. A registered education savings plan is a great way to invest in the educational future of your children without going into debt trying to help them. Let’s discuss some ways to make the most of an RESP.

Make the Most of Your Child's Registered Education Savings Plan

Make the Most of Your Child’s Registered Education Savings Plan

Withdraw EAP First

It’s important to understand the composition of the funds within the RESP to know which funds to withdraw first. Education assistance payments are comprised of invested money, government grants, and the capital gains on the money. The other portion is post-secondary education payments, which are comprised of money contributed by benefactors after taxes. The former is a pre-tax contribution, and the latter is a post-tax contribution.

The EAP can be paid out in monthly payments to the student. Students have a very low tax liability and will pay the lowest rate in taxes, retaining the greatest amount of funds. Students also receive tuition and education tax credits, further reducing their tax burden.

Withdrawal Limits

There is a limit to how much money can be withdrawn in EAP during the first 13 weeks of enrollment. The limit is $5,000 for a full-time student and $2,500 for a part-time student. This is to ensure that the student stays in college and commits to their education. After the first 13 weeks, EAPs can be withdrawn at any time or amount. There is no limit on PSEs being withdrawn in the first year of college.

Minimize Losses

If it looks like there is going to be funds left in the account before graduation, consider withdrawing the remaining balance to avoid penalties. Withdrawing investment earnings that are not used for education expenses incur income tax plus an additional 20% penalty.

By the end of their degree, you should have used up the government grant money in the form of EAPs. However, if there is any leftover at the time of graduation, it can be requested to be returned.

If there is a decent amount of funds left in the RESP near graduation time, you can transfer the plan to a different beneficiary so long as they share a parent. This is a good way to prevent taxes and fees from being levied and get a jump start on college funding for another child.

Make the Most of Your Child's Registered Education Savings Plan
Make the Most of Your Child’s Registered Education Savings Plan

An RESP can stay open for a total of 36 years and must be closed at the end of the 35 years. If you still have money left over after they graduate and do not have another eligible child, the funds can sometimes be rolled into a registered retirement savings plan up to $50,000 to avoid taxation. Talk with your financial provider to discuss if this is an option for you.

Bright Plan RESP offers flexible contribution options, the ability to easily add beneficiaries, and on-demand technical support. Managing and planning for your child’s registered education savings plan will set your children up for success and help to stem the tide of huge debt accumulation by young adults overall.

While it can be hard to find these pieces in good condition at an affordable price, you can make these items by using crochet patterns.

Hottest Colours

One of the best parts about recreating these looks is being able to do so in today’s colours. While things may look outdated in the colours that were popular at that time, they can look awesome in today’s hottest colours. But, if you do love the colors from yesteryear, you can still recreate the exact look. A good craft store will have hundreds of different colours for your projects.

Gingerbread Play Dough Mats With Printable

8

Play dough mats are all the rage right now! Whoever came up with the idea is a genius! They are a totally inventive way to teach young children all kinds of educational skills without making a huge investment. This set of five gingerbread play dough mats that you can print featured below is perfect for the holiday season. After all, what’s Christmas without a little gingerbread man craft and learning fun?

How to use the Play Dough Mats

For those of you who may be unfamiliar with this learning tool, let me briefly explain. Parents and teachers everywhere are creating these mats, which are then simply printed out and slipped into a plastic sleeve.

Gingerbread Play Dough Mats
Gingerbread Play Dough Mats Number 1

A cheaper alternative is ordinary plastic wrap. Tear off a piece larger than the mat itself. Use easy-to- remove tape to secure it to the table or work surface. When your child is done playing simply throw the plastic wrap away.

If you don’t want to invest in sleeves or don’t have plastic wrap handy, no worries! Just keep in mind that the play dough mats won’t last as long and will need to be printed out frequently.

Honestly, the instructions for each colourful mat are pretty self-explanatory. It will probably be necessary to help younger kids the first time they play with a new mat. After that, many children can use it successfully on their own!

Learning Activities With Christmas Mats

All sorts of learning activities are possible with the mats. Colours, numbers, shapes, and counting are just a few of them. Depending on the purpose for which the mat was created, it can even be used to teach social skills like sharing and saying please and thank you!

Once you start searching for play dough mats, chances are you’re going to find tons of them your children want to play with. An easy way to keep them all together is to put them in a three-ring binder. Punch each mat with the appropriately-sized hole punch and storing them is easy-peasy!

Below you can find a few tips and tricks to consider as an alternative for cosmetic dentistry and dental treatments made by an experienced dentist, mentioning that professional help and advice are recommended by specialists.

Simple teeth whitening methods to consider

Who wouldn’t dream about perfect white teeth? And what are the best methods for whitening the teeth at home? According to dental experts, teeth discolouration appears due to many reasons, like smoking, consuming products like coffee, wine, or any coloured foods that leave stains and change the color of the enamel, the hard shell of the teeth.

Luckily, there are varied home remedies to consider for cosmetic dentistry and among these, the following are recommended by any dentist:

  1. Brush the teeth with baking soda – this ingredient is already found in any toothpaste, it is abrasive and can remove the stains on the teeth even better.
  2. You can use rinses based on hydrogen peroxide of 1.5% or 3% solution – this can be found at any drugstore. Alongside baking soda, this ingredient is also found in toothpaste.
  3. Clean your teeth with a tablespoon of coconut oil from time to time – this can also reduce the number of bacteria in the mouth besides whitening the teeth.
  4. Apple cider vinegar is known for its disinfectant attributes, but it can also be used for whitening the teeth, diluted with water – this method can be used from time to time.

Many people are afraid of the dentist and look for alternative methods when it comes to cosmetic dentistry services; however, teeth whitening methods at home should be recommended after a previous dental check-up because the dentist will know what is best for you. Especially If the teeth can support a specific remedy or not. Moreover, cosmetic dentistry doesn’t limit to teeth whitening methods, and people might need teeth straightening methods or repair chipped and/or cracked teeth. Also, a dental implant might be necessary for patients wanting to improve their smile, therefore, such treatments need to be made in a dental office.

Brush, floss and adopt a healthy diet

It is true, we hear this advice once in a while, if not on a daily basis thanks to the commercials seen on TV: brush and floss your teeth at least twice per day. This recommendation definitely leads to healthy and strong teeth, particularly if a diet based on fruits and vegetables is adopted. According to experts in nutrition, pineapple and strawberries are two delicious fruits that can also whiten the teeth, so you might want to give extra attention to these when creating your diet.

How can I protect my teeth from stains?

This is definitely a simple answer and that because it is up to us and our personal choices when it comes to food, diet, and teeth protection. For instance, it is a known fact that sodas, coffee, and red wine can easily stain the teeth, so you might want to pay a little attention and see if it is time to reduce the amount of coffee or wine. More than that, it is highly recommended to brush the teeth soon after you enjoy such products. Cutting the amount of sugar (that is also responsible for carries and cavities) and cigarettes can help you maintain the natural white color of the teeth.

There are numerous home remedies for cosmetic dentistry, but the recommendations of a dentist will help you make wise choices for your teeth, mentioning that delicate problems like cavities, cracked teeth, or dental bridge must be solved in a dental office.
