What is Aromatherapy?

But what is aromatherapy, exactly, and how can the average person benefit? Aromatherapy is not a cure-all, but it can be an effective way to deal with real world realities.

The word aromatherapy refers to the practice of using scents of various essential oils, derived from plants. These essential oils can be used to change your mood, relax your mind, boost your immune system, even help with bodily functions. Just three to five drops of essential oil in your preferred medium is all that is needed. All of the essential oils are available at your local aromatherapy store or online. Depending on the store, they may also have additional accessory products mentioned here. Some of them like lavender, are fairly common and inexpensive. But others, like Jasmine, are very expensive and rare.

Ways To Use Essential Oils

There are four different wonderful ways to use essential plant oils.

The most common way to use essential plant oils is in a massage oil. Simply put a few drops of essential oil in a bottle of massage oil, and the oil is absorbed through the skin.

For those that like taking baths, there is a wonderful option. Get a bottle of plain bath gel, put just a few drops of essence in the gel, run a hot bath, and add gel.

The third option is to spray essential oils. Simply get a little pump or spray bottle, fill it with room temperature water, and put a few drops of essence in. Then just spray the essence either in the air, on your pillow before bed, or even directly on your body.

The last option is the simplest: get an aromatherapy diffuser. It works just like those commercial scent diffusers, except you control exactly what you will smell. Just put a few drops of essence on a small pad, then plug in the diffuser.

What Essential Oils Do

There is a whole list of essential oils and what they do. Here are just three of them: lavender, tea tree, and ylang-ylang.

The name lavender is derived from a Latin word lavare that means “to wash”, and that is exactly what lavender does. It washes away stress. Using the scent to fill a room, it slows a busy mind and brings peace, in order to fall asleep gently and have sweet dreams. Use lavender in bath gel or massage oil and it will bring whole body relaxation, to loosen up stiff muscles, and ease away tensions.

Tea tree has another use entirely. It helps pump up your immune system. When used in a diffuser, it will help feel awake if you’re tired. If used in a bath, it will make you feel energized if you are sick.

Ylang-ylang has effects that are similar to lavender, in that it helps to relax you, but in a different way. Ylang-ylang helps you to shed inhibitions when used in a scent diffuser. When used in a bath or sprayed from a water bottle, it has a direct physiological effect. Men and women both will experience increased blood flow to certain areas of their bodies.
