How To Clean Your Kitchen In 20 Minutes

5

The kitchen is often the most important room in the home, the place where meals are prepared, kids congregate to do homework, and family and friends gather for dinner. For these reasons, you want your kitchen to always look clean and inviting. You will find below 5 tips on how to clean your kitchen in 20 minutes!

Although most kitchens tend to be busy, high-traffic areas, it is possible to have a clean, sparkling kitchen. You first need to organize and get rid of clutter. Clear the countertops of unnecessary and rarely used items. Organize your drawers and cabinets. Designate a place for everything and always return items that you aren’t using.

How To Clean Your Kitchen In 20 Minutes

How To Clean Your Kitchen

Once your kitchen is organized, it will be much easier to maintain and keep clean, especially if you follow these quick, easy tips. By setting aside 20 minutes for kitchen cleaning every day or two, your kitchen should look fantastic.

1. Always keep a good supply of cleaning products in your kitchen.

Have a spray bottle filled with an all-purpose cleaner handy for quickie cleanups. Also have plenty of sponges, paper towels, and an easy-to-use mop and sweeper. If you want to save some money, try making your own cleaning products using basic ingredients such as vinegar, ammonia, and baking soda. KLIIN dish cleansing paste is also effective as a general household power cleaner and is eco-friendly.

2. Clean kitchen surfaces: Start kitchen cleaning with the sink, faucets, and countertops

They are the most frequently used areas in the kitchen and are magnets for attracting bacteria and grunge from dirty hands and food handling, especially raw meats. Use an anti-bacterial cleanser that will help eliminate the bacteria and also leave a nice shine. If your countertops are made of granite or other sensitive materials, always check the manufacturer’s recommendations first because some cleansers may be too harsh.

Green Cleaning Recipes and Homemade Solutions

3. Clean kitchen appliances

Spray and wipe all outside surfaces and handles on the stove and refrigerator. Include the backsplash, if you have one. For traditional electric and gas stoves, wipe the burner drip pans to prevent grease and splatter buildup. You can also clean the glass stovetop with these helpful tips. If you have time, check the oven and inside the refrigerator for spills. Wipe off your smaller appliances including the toaster, coffee maker, crock pot, bread maker, and microwave. Also clean out the dishwasher as needed.

4. Clean windows, doors, and drawers

A quick spray and wipe should take care of any sticky fingerprints, spills, and splatters. Also give the floor a quick sweeping or mopping and wipe down the table and chairs, especially if you have young children in the house.

5. Clean Kitchen Accessories and more

Don’t forget to clean accessories, knickknacks, plants, wall hangings, and overhead light fixtures on occasion. If you have area rugs, give them a good shaking out or vacuuming every few days and clean them as needed.

How To Clean Your Kitchen In 20 Minutes

Maintaining a clean and sparkling kitchen does not have to be difficult. You will be amazed at how much cleaning you can get done in 20 minutes. Don’t try to clean everything at once. With routine 20-minute cleanings you should have no problem keeping your kitchen looking fresh, clean, and inviting every day.

It can’t be true! Animals! Book

It can’t be true! Animals! Book
Cover of ‘It must be true! Animals’

This beautiful colourful book illustrates all sort of fun facts about all sorts of animals (and insects) small and large. It is divided into 5 sections: Skills and Senses, Unbelievable bodies, Strength and speed, Homes and Hideaways, and last but not least, Growing and Breeding.

Did you know that there is a ‘handfish’ that actually walks. I love these books even for myself. I always also learn so much from them. This little guy isn’t a strong swimmer, so it walks on the sea floor when searching for worms.

Inside ‘It can’t be true! Animals’

Every page has outstanding and surprising facts. Did you know that certain species of ants expel a gooey substance to fend off enemies and defend their colony which they sacrifice their life for? Pretty cool!

Jax’s favourite page, of course, was seeing all the different sizes of bears and how they measure up to human size.

The boys couldn’t wait to crack this sticker book open. Not only do they love LEGO, but they also love stickers and of COURSE Halloween!

Why Landlords Should Require Tenants to Carry Renters Insurance

1

Many landlords already understand that it is crucial to keep their apartment buildings, condos or houses well protected against the things they may be exposed to, like vandalism, fire, etc. Their insurance policy should be able to cover the physical structure of the building they own and their liability, but many renters and tenants think that this covers their belongings and liability as well. Due to this, many tenants will opt to go without renter’s insurance.

This can lead to a great deal of issues (and even legal disputes!) between the landlord and renter if something should happen, like a lawsuit or damaged belongings. If landlords were to require their tenants to carry renters insurance this could mitigate confusion over the protection of both the landlord and the tenant. In this post, we break down why landlords should require their tenants to carry renters’ insurance and the importance of this coverage.

Why Landlords Should Require Tenants to Carry Renters Insurance

First thing’s first: what is renters’ insurance?

How does renters’ insurance deviate from a landlord’s insurance, you might be wondering? Put simply, a tenant’s (separate) policy may be able to protect their belongings and their unit’s contents. Additionally, renters’ insurance may be able to protect an individual’s liability in case something should happen to a third party on the property.

What does renters’ insurance cover?

Renters’ insurance supplies peace of mind to your renters or tenants as it can cover a variety of things beyond your possessions.

  • Your unit’s contents from vandalism, theft, fire, and more,
  • Loss of use (if your rental unit becomes unfit for living), and the cost of living while your unit is temporarily unavailable,
  • Belongings outside your unit, such as if you were on vacation and your laptop were to be stolen,
  • Your liability, which can cover you for injuries to guests that you are held responsible for, if your pet were to bite someone, etc.

You may need to discuss with a broker if you have any high-value items (such as jewellery, collections, and electronics) as their cost may exceed the coverage limits stated in your policy. Also, your insurance may not cover your roommate’s possessions or liability, so they will need to acquire their own policy. Floods and earthquakes may not be covered by your insurance depending on your area – for example, generally doesn’t include this coverage.

Why it’s important that renters carry separate insurance:

More than just settling disputes, there are a variety of reasons why it is important that landlords require their tenants to carry insurance.

It ensures your tenants can be trusted.

Requiring renters’ insurance can weed out tenants that might not be one hundred percent committed to making payments on time or maintaining their unit according to the building’s standards. By requiring insurance in the lease, you guarantee that your tenants are serious about their property and are generally compliant.

It’s easy to put in a lease.

It isn’t hard to ask tenants to carry renters’ insurance and only takes adding a provision to the lease agreement. In some rental properties, landlords will request proof of insurance before the renter or tenant is allowed to move in. This way, you can ensure both parties are protected and maintain a good relationship.

It’s not expensive.

Renters’ insurance isn’t very expensive and renters’ insurance in Ontario can be purchased starting at as little as 12$/month. It might be a concern for some landlords that requesting renters’ insurance can scare away certain tenants but it isn’t much more than a few cups of coffee a month. Moreover, some rental properties may be able to offer renters’ insurance discounts.

It provides security.

With renters’ insurance, your tenants or renters won’t constantly need to worry about their possessions or what would happen if someone were to be injured in their unit or due to their actions. Renters’ insurance protects both the renter and the landlord and can supply both parties with peace of mind and help to maintain the relationship between them.

Why Landlords Should Require Tenants to Carry Renters Insurance

In conclusion

From both perspectives, landlord and tenant, renters’ insurance is a win-win. It provides security for both participants, helps to maintain a relationship built on trust, and is there if anything unexpected should happen. Even though renters’ insurance isn’t necessarily required, it is a good idea for a landlord to request a tenant carry the bare minimum of insurance to protect their assets and everyone’s peace of mind.

Aromatherapy For Sinus Pain And Congestion

3

Sinus pain, caused by swelling inside and around the nasal passages that produce mucus, is common during cold, flu, and allergy seasons. You can use aromatherapy for sinus pain and congestion to help reduce sinus pressure and inflammation.

Young woman with sinus pressure pain.

What is Aromatherapy

A related, but less frequently used technique to reduce pain and pressure is aromatherapy. It is a complementary medicine that relies on healing properties of herbs as applied in essential oil forms. The concentrated oils can be diluted in added oil and applied to the skin or can be inhaled in some forms. Simple use relies on using a single oil scent to trigger relaxation, energy, or other moods. More complex aromatherapy is undertaken with specific recipes that combine oils to enhance individual properties and improve health and healing. Quantities and reasoning for herbal selection in these recipes date back thousands of years.

How To Help Relieve Sinus Pressure

Two common complementary approaches to reducing sinus pressure are steam and irrigation.

Steam treatment is comprised of hot water vapour inhaled to moisturize the nasal passages, strengthen membranes and reduce swelling. Steam sources include electrical vaporizer machines, old-fashioned towel-over-a-hot pot techniques (but watch for burning), or prolonged bathroom steam from long showers. An additional benefit of steam treatment is that lung airways are opened up. You can add 1-2 drops of essential oils listed below. The rule of thumbs is 1 drop/quart of water.

Nasal irrigation consists of salt water application directly to the nasal passages to reduce mucus, moisten airways, and improve drainage. One of the oldest forms of irrigation is with a Neti Pot, a device that allows the user to pour warm salt water into one nostril while the head is on its side, so that the saline drains out the other nostril. Newer forms of irrigation include pressurized plastic bottles that force the saline from one nostril to the other or to the mouth cavity so that the user can stand normally. These irrigations can improve not only sinus pain but also nasal allergies, sore throats, and ear pain.

Essential Oils and Methods to Treat Sinus Pain and Pressure

Some of the most common oils used for sinus pain and pressure are tea tree, lavender, bergamot, eucalyptus, and oregano. These essential oils can be diluted with plain oil and massaged onto key areas of the head and neck: behind and below the ears, on the back of the neck, on the temples, and on the topmost part of the nose (taking care around the eyes). These spots receive immediate relief with this technique. The essential oils can also be inhaled indirectly from the bottle for more direct effect in the nasal passages, can be added to a humidifier or used in the shower or in a diffuser.

Tea Tree Oil

Tea tree oil has antiseptic and antimicrobial properties and helps eliminate germs causing infection in the sinuses while boosting the immune system to prevent future infections. The vapours in tea tree oil open up the sinus passages and breathing airways while relieving nasal congestion. It can also be use therapeutically for sinusitis, rhinitis, respiratory tract infections, laryngitis, and bronchitis.

Lavender Oil

Lavender is highly antiseptic, or cleansing, and is also known for soothing and relaxation properties. Thus, it can be absorbed to help remove mucus or bacterial particles and its scent can relax the muscles that tighten during sinus headache.

Bergamot Oil

Bergamot is a sweet citrus compound that fights viral and bacterial germs, so it can prevent additional infection from developing at the source of sinus pain; it is a cleansing antiseptic and energizer as well because of its citrus properties.

Eucalyptus Oil

Eucalyptus is often combined with menthol to relieve sinus pain and open airways, because it is anti-inflammatory and antibacterial. When used in combination with menthol and camphor, counterirritation reduces sinus pain and antiseptic activity gives a cooling effect, so that blood vessels constrict mildly to reduce swelling and open airways.

Oregano Oil

Oregano, through unknown mechanisms, decreases excessive immune reactions and swelling, such as those seen with allergy, and prevents germ buildup of all kinds.

Aromatherapy Cautions

Following essential oil safety guidelines may help reduce the risk of developing side effects. There are circumstances in which there could be essential oil contraindications to follow.

The potential side effects of essential oils include:

  • Irritation and burning: Essential oil may cause irritation and burning. Always dilute essential oils with a carrier oil before applying it to the skin. Do a test, by applying a small amount to a small area of your skin first and see if you get any reactions.
  • Asthma attacks: Some people with asthma may react to breathing in the fumes.
  • Headaches: If you inhale too much essential oils, it may lead to headaches instead of helping with it.

Consult a licensed aromatherapist for continued treatment, and consult a doctor for pain that is not relieved by traditional or complementary medicines.

Aromatherapy For Sinus Pain and Congestion

Traditional remedies, such as spray or oral decongestants like phenylephrine, can temporarily constrict blood vessels to decrease swelling and improve breathing; however, most over-the-counter remedies can only be used for short times and have their own side effects. Sinus pain duration can seem unending when allergies and infections flare during the winter months, so better and more options are needed such as using aromatherapy to help with sinus pain and congestion during the cold and flu season.

The Cutest Children’s Costumes for a Halloween Party

3

This year, bring the energy of Halloween trick-or-treating indoors and celebrate the spooky holiday with some gooey crafts, scary movies, bone-chilling games, freaky foods, and most importantly, spine-chillingly adorable costumes! Let’s look at the cutest children’s costume ideas for a Halloween party and where you can go to find them.

Their Favourite TV or Film Character

By now, you probably have that song from Frozen etched into your brain, and Elsa and Anna are household names. While they’re not the scariest costumes, children love the characters from Frozen so much, and for many, the idea of being one of them for a night would be a dream come true. Walmart has several costume ideas for kids, including princess outfits from Frozen 2, and more of your favourite Disney and Star Wars movie characters! Ensure to find a mall near you with a store that sells Halloween costumes before you leave the house, so you won’t disappoint any princesses this October 31st.

Kids in Halloween costumes

You can also find many other favourite TV and film characters, such as adorable familiar faces from Paw Patrol and Monster High. Why not throw a themed party and have everyone in the family dress up as TV and film characters? Superheroes such as Batman, Catwoman, Black Widow, and Spiderman were always popular choices for Halloween costumes at our house. You could play television or film appropriate-trivia games. Throw a pumpkin carving contest, and instead of the carving scary jack-o-lanterns, the goal is to carve your costume’s character! Winners receive delicious sweets, and your family will have a delightful memory for many years to come.

The Traditional Spooky Suspects

Sometimes you just want to have a classic Halloween with ghosts, vampires, devils, goblins, witches, and ghouls. Do you have an old copy of The Monster Mash lying around? Do you have a cauldron to bob for apples? There’s nothing like an old-fashioned Halloween bash, and what better time to host one with the family than the very night itself?

The Cutest Children’s Costumes for a Halloween at Home

To get in the true Hallow’s Eve spirit, you must find the right place to purchase the creepiest costumes and house decorations. Look for a shopping centre with a Halloween store, such as the Spirit Halloween. Such stores sell exclusively seasonal items, and you can count on them to find spooky (and cute) costumes for the children. If you’re unsure where the nearest costume store is, find a website that can find one for you. An online shopping guide that locates the best deals, stores, and malls in Canada is precisely the kind of website busy moms need right now.

Kids in halloween costumes looking at some candy

October is usually one of the most socially-engaging times of the year. Unfortunately, this year is very different than previous Halloweens. If you’re concerned about the COVID-19 virus, trick-or-treating with your kids and walking around the neighbourhood might not be the best idea; however, with some creative costumes and Halloween house decorations, you and the family can have your own unique Halloween party. And don’t forget the most essential part: the candy

Cooking for kids is hard, and cooking for the whole family when you have a full time job might sound like an impossible feat. But according to Reader’s Digest and a slew of mommy bloggers from Canada, it doesn’t have to be traumatic or stressful. The key lies in learning how to cook with your heart. Instead of struggling to juggle and multitask, planning recipes ahead of time and being flexible, creative, and innovative. Here are some effective tips for working moms that need a helping hand in juggling work and cooking while planning and executing their weekly meal plans.

Juggling Work and Cooking: Effective Tips for Working Moms

1. Keeping a well-stocked pantry with foods you approve of!

This might seem like a no-brainer, but too often, we stock our pantry with snacks and cookies because they are easy, or so we think. Having carrots and pre-made hummus can be as convenient, plus it’s much healthier. When you’re out shopping, throw out that tub of ice cream and opt for a healthier option instead. There are so many other things you should be getting such as high-protein foods and high-fiber weight loss pasta that taste equally great and can help you stay fit and healthy. When you eliminate junk from your pantry, you won’t be tempted to snack on them.

Having a well-stocked pantry also means that you can whip up just about anything. But don’t fret if there is something missing from the recipe that you’ve just found off Pinterest. Another thing that moms are great at is improvising.

2. Make way for improvisation in your cooking!

Don’t have carrots? Use potatoes. No honey? Substitute with applesauce. There are a million and one ways to make a dish and just because the recipe you found needs a certain ingredient that you don’t have, you can use an ingredient substitution guide or omit the ingredient entirely. It’s not going to ruin the recipe and no one is going to know. It’ll also save you a trip to the supermarket for a grocery run.

3. Don’t hold back and cook large batches!

Of course, it definitely helps to plan ahead. If you’re going to have meatballs for dinner, why not make a large batch and use it in a casserole for tomorrow’s lunch or in a wrap for breakfast? When you plan your meals in advance, you’ll be able to better prepare for the impending meals; however, if you can’t be bothered to plan, simply make large batches of everything and make use of the leftovers. If you don’t feel like having the same thing over the next few meals, you can freeze it for later in the week. This is especially time-saving if you are feeling tired and don’t feel like cooking because you can just thaw and heat it for a meal. If you have kids who are old enough to work the oven or microwave, you can be sure they won’t starve or consume any of that nasty frozen tv dinners.

4. A one-pot meal is just as good!

When you’re low on supplies and nearing your next visit to the grocers, you can just chuck everything into a pot and call it a day. Chilis and stew keep rather well (you’ll find they gain more flavor the longer you keep them) and are a healthy alternative to tv dinners. It’s the perfect low-effort meal because you will have less dishes to clean and a good meal for the rest of the week.

5. Get your family involved in the cooking!

It’s the 21st century, you don’t have to slave away in the kitchens just because you’re the mom. You can make Sunday takeout day or better yet, get the whole family in on it and help with planning and preparing meals for the rest of the week. If you have older children, they can be in charge of cooking dinner or breakfast once a week. Not only does this help build their confidence in the kitchen, it will also teach them valuable life skills such as how not to burn the kitchen down. If your children are younger, you can also involve them with some age-appropriate activities.

6. Moms don’t always need to cook the best meals!

This might be a little controversial, but having pancakes for dinner is entirely valid. Don’t pressure yourself into being the perfect mom who is always cooking the best meals for their families. Cooking shouldn’t be a chore or a source of stress. If it’s getting too much, you can always take a backseat and order takeout instead. Go gentle on yourself, moms.

Juggling Work and Cooking: Effective Tips for Working Moms

These are just some of the tips that mothers do when they are determined to put home cooked food on the table, but cooking isn’t a necessity. Too often do mothers feel that they have a checklist of things they need to fulfill in order to be the “perfect mother”. But the truth is, a happy mom is much more important in raising a healthy family.

Delicious Margarita Recipes: Classic and Iced

3

Do you know how to make a good margarita cocktail? It’s so easy and all you need are a few ingredients to make the best recipe. I know you will love these 2 recipes we shared: Classic Margarita and Iced Margarita.

How To Make A Good Margarita

A Margarita is, without doubt, my favourite cocktail, and my drink of choice when drinking at a restaurant. Cocktails do tend to be expensive, and there’s nothing more disappointing when you have that first sip and realize you could have made better at home for half the price. Whilst some get it right, others destroy the most classic of cocktails. Common errors seem to be the use of weak cordial instead of fresh lime juice and the wrong amount of tequila. The best Margaritas are fresh and tangy with a perfect balance of flavour.

Here is what I think makes a good margarita recipe!

What To Serve With A Margarita

If you are looking for some delicious Mexican food to accompany your drinks, you can make:

The Turkey Taco Party Cups as appetizers, followed by Sheet Pan Nachos for the main dish, and for dessert, the Strawberry Margarita Cupcake with Liquor!

Delicious Margarita Recipes: Classic and Iced

The Iced Margarita Recipe

Some find the classic Margarita a bit too strong. For something with a little less kick, you might like to try the Iced Margarita recipe. It is a refreshing drink that combines the elements of the Classic Margarita in a more diluted version.

Iced Margarita Ingredients

  • 2½ measures of silver tequila
  • 1 ¼ measure of Cointreau (triple sec)
  • Juice of 1 fresh lime
  • 1 lime sliced in rings
  • 6 x small scoops of lime sorbet
  • 150ml x cold lemonade
  • crushed ice
  • optional: lime wedge and coarse salt for rimming the glass

How To Make An Iced Margarita

  1. Prepare your glass: If you want to salt the rim of your glass, run a juicy lime wedge around the rim, and dip the rim in coarse Kosher salt. Set aside.
  2. Combine the ingredients: Combine the tequila, Cointreau, and fresh lime juice in a jug or a cocktail shaker. Shake or stir until it is combined and chilled.
  3. Fill two glasses: with a few slices of lime. Split the sorbet between the two glasses and add some ice in each glass. Split the drink into each glass. Top up each glass with a helping of lemonade.
  4. Serve: Garnished with a slice of lime
  5. Enjoy!

This recipe will be enough to serve two drinks.

A Margarita is a great cocktail for pre-dinner drinks and provides the perfect accompaniment to a Mexican feast. You’ll probably adjust the alcohol quantities to suit your taste, but where possible, always try to use freshly squeezed lime juice for that fresh and tangy taste. 7 Important Skills You Need To Teach Your Children

0

As your little ones grow up, you should start teaching them basic and important life skills that transforms them into strong, confident, and independent individuals. Here are 7 of the most important skills you need to teach your children!

Important Skills You Need To Teach Your Children

1. Time Management Skills

No, it is not too early to teach your kids how to manage their time well. Once they manage to do that, it will help them at every point of time in their lives. Doing this will also help make your kids more responsible. They’ll learn how important it is to stick to a schedule, and how it’ll make their lives a lot more easier.

2. Cooking Skills

Start simple and let your kid fix his bowl of cereal, make a toast, or whip up a quick sandwich and then take it from there. This will encourage your kids to become independent and they’ll not have to rely on you always cook for them or to provide them a meal when they’re hungry.

3. Pitching In

A lot of us may tend to ignore this one, but it is super important to let our kids learn to speak up and have their own opinions. So whether you’re planning your next vacation or purchasing a couple of good books, encourage your kid to pitch in about his views and ideas.

4. Speaking Up for Themselves

In the hustle of teaching our kids to excel at everything and getting them to be the perfect child, a lot of us have sort of stripped them of their power to make decisions, speak up, and be accountable for what they do. Make sure you allow your children to speak up, make small decisions for themselves, and learn to fight against what they feel is wrong.

5. Cleaning

As a parent, you may find it easier to do all the household work yourself, since kids are obviously not great at it, and they are still in the learning phase. BUT don’t let that stop you from encouraging your kids to take up a few age-appropriate chores in the house that will teach them the value and importance of being clean and keeping the house clean too.

6. Money Management Skills

Educating your kids about the value of money and managing it is super important, since a lot of us, as adults, tend to still struggle with it, probably because we weren’t used to doing it at an early age in our lives. Remind them to keep track of their expenses, and slowly, introduce the concept of making a budget too.

7. Getting Ready

This one’s another important skill that a lot of parents forget to teach their kids and that is teaching them to get ready on their own. This not only gives them a little power to make their own choices about what they want to wear, but also makes them more responsible and teaches them to pay importance on grooming and cleanliness too.

7 Important Skills You Need To Teach Your Children

These 7 important skills you need to teach your children will help them transition into being responsible young adults!

10 Hypoallergenic Pets for the Whole Family

4

Do you want to get a pet for the whole family, but feel like you can’t due to allergies? This is a valid concern, but you’ll be pleased to learn that not every pet will trigger your allergies. Read on to learn about the best hypoallergenic pets for the whole family!

It helps to know that fur isn’t the cause; it’s typically the carrier. Dander that’s shed from pets gets trapped in their fur and causes the allergies you experience. Pet saliva can also be a cause. However, there are a variety of hypoallergenic pets that you can choose from in all shapes and sizes.

10 Hypoallergenic Pets for the Whole Family

What Are Hypoallergenic Pets?

You need to know that hypoallergenic pets aren’t completely free of allergens, but they’re significantly less. Since fur is a carrier of allergens and not the cause, getting cats or dogs that are hairless or don’t shed as often also isn’t a signifier that you’ll have fewer allergy symptoms with them present.

If you or a family member struggles with extreme allergies to pets, it may be time to consider animals that aren’t as fuzzy. You’ll also need to accept the fact that no matter what, you’ll need to clean diligently.

The Best Hypoallergenic Pets

Now that you know what “hypoallergenic” means and what you can expect, here are some pets we recommend for you and your family. They have significantly fewer allergens than other pets and may also be low-maintenance pets.

1. Devon Rex Cat

These kinds of cats don’t shed as much as others because of their unique, wavy coat. Although you’ll need to clean their ears and paw pads due to excess oil, they require little maintenance when it comes to baths and grooming. They typically have large ears, a narrow neck, and big eyes.

These are playful cats that love being the center of attention.

2. Russian Blue

Russian Blue cats are good for people with mild cat allergies because of their plush coat. It doesn’t shed often and only requires a minimal amount of brushing. These cats are mild-mannered and calm; they love being near their family but not overwhelmed with attention.

3. Sphynx

These cats are often recommended to people with cat allergies because they have no fur. This doesn’t make them completely allergy-free, but frequent baths will greatly minimize dander and excess oil that can cause allergies. These are playful, vocal cats.

4. Kerry Blue Terrier

If it’s a dog you’re searching for, the Kerry Blue Terrier may be the right breed for you. It’s often recommended to people with allergies because of the Kerry’s non-shedding coat. This breed also sheds its skin only about every 21 days–far less than other breeds. If you keep their coat regularly clean and groomed, your allergies will be thanking you.

Poodle -Hypoallergenic Pet

5. Poodle

Poodles are known for their big personalities, intelligence, and great style. They’re also recommended because they have no undercoats and tightly curled coats. This means that they shed less than other dogs. Their coats also keep dander from shedding and floating into the air.

6. Portuguese Water Dog

Similar to poodles, this Portuguese Water Dog breed is recommended because it only has a single coat, causing it to shed less than other breeds. As with any other hypoallergenic breed, keeping their coat clean and trimmed will go a long way in helping your allergies. It’s also important to remember that dogs with single coats are good with people with mild allergies but not with severe ones.

7. Parakeet

If you have severe allergies and know that a dog and cat will still make them worse, it may be time to consider other pets like a Parakeet. While birds can still produce dander, these small birds won’t produce as much compared to a larger pet or even other birds. They require a minimal amount of grooming

However, it’s important to do your research before you purchase a pet bird, as these intelligent and inquisitive creatures need lots of attention and activities to keep them busy.

8. Miniature Pigs

Don’t let the name fool you–miniature pigs can still grow to up to 150 pounds or more. Any pig is classified as “mini” if they’re 350 pounds or less when they’re adults. Because of their size and nature, pigs need their own space in a large yard where they can explore, root around, and have frequent siestas.

Pigs are great for people with allergies because they have hair instead of fur. They’re also surprisingly clean animals.

9. Frogs

Frogs are a great recommendation because it’s rare when people have an allergic reaction to them. Although they aren’t the best for frequent handling or cuddling, taking care of them and setting up the best environment can make young minds active and serve as a great lesson for kids who are interested in nature. These guys are fun to watch and can even be therapeutic.

10. Leopard Geckos

Last but not least are leopard geckos. These geckos can be considered one of the most low maintenance hypoallergenic pets because they don’t require a lot of maintenance or grooming. They won’t cause allergic reactions and are fun to watch in their terrarium or when slowly walking up your arm.

As with all reptiles, it’s important that you research leopard gecko care before purchasing them, as they need a specific environment and diet to live happily.

Caring for Hypoallergenic Pets

It’s important to remember that most hypoallergenic pets, especially those will fur, may still produce the dander or saliva that can cause allergies. If you have severe allergies, it’s important that you speak with your doctor before purchasing a pet. You’ll also want to consider adopting or purchasing pets that don’t have fur, such as birds or reptiles.

10 Hypoallergenic Pets for the Whole Family

Teach your kids to properly take good care of their pets. Show the right way to feed, bathe, and care for their beloved pets each day. It’s a good thing to start teaching kids about responsible pet ownership as early as possible.

Choosing Hypoallergenic Pets

If your kids have an allergic reaction to fur, hair, and cotton—then they may be allergic to dogs as well. To make sure your kids don’t get an allergic reaction, you must know to choose hypoallergenic pets.

If you’re looking for cute toy dogs like the Poodle, you may consider getting a Shih Tzu, Bichon Frise, or Havanese. These hypoallergenic dogs are sweet, child-friendly, and not shedding. They’re incredibly social, easy to train, and affectionate as well.

Here are additional tips to avoid getting an allergic reaction to dogs. You can teach your kids to practice these as well:

  1. Don’t touch your face, especially the eyes, after getting in contact with dogs.
  2. Avoid close contact with dogs, like kissing, hugging, or sleeping with them on one bed.
  3. Vacuum common pet areas that may trap fur and contain allergens.
  4. Wash your hands with soap and water after touching dogs.

Takeaways

Whatever pet you choose, you must also consider your child’s preference. Include them in the selection and decision-making process, and help them understand why a hypoallergenic pet is the best choice for them and the whole family.

Regardless of whether a pet is low maintenance or not, keeping them clean and learning about their care before making an impulse buy will ensure that they have a long and healthy life.

Prepping Your Home For An Ontario Winter Storm

2

If you live in Ontario, you know that there is a real possibility of severe winter storms. From cold temperatures to several feet of snow, storms can quickly strand homeowners. Ensuring that your home is adequately prepared for harsh winter weather is the best way to survive and thrive. Are you prepping your home for an Ontario winter storm?

Bitter winter temperatures are a real risk when a storm hits. Having your home ready can mean the difference between staying warm and freezing temperature at night. Winter storms can come out of the blue, so it’s essential to be prepared early in the season.

Prepping Your Home For A Winter Storm

Having a plan, doing essential maintenance, and having backup generators in Ontario are necessary prepping tasks for winter. Let’s look at a few prepping tips to help you get your home ready for winter in Ontario.

Furnace Inspection

When the temperatures drop in the winter in Ontario, your furnace will have to keep up. Finding out that your furnace isn’t working efficiently after a winter storm hits is too late. In the autumn, call in a furnace professional to do an inspection and make sure that your system is ready for any unexpected winter weather emergency. Make sure to change your filters quarterly, and get ready to stay warm and comfortable during a winter storm.

Emergency Generator

If a winter storm knocks out the power, you could be in real trouble if you don’t have a backup generator. Your furnace, electric heat, appliances, and lights all rely on a steady stream of electricity to help you survive a winter storm. A backup emergency generator operates on gasoline and can keep your electricity running when the grid goes down.

Chimney Cleaned

If you are lucky enough to have a wood-burning fireplace or stove, you have an advantage during a winter storm. You can keep your home warm, even if the power is out. The danger comes from the potential for a chimney fire.

If you don’t use your fireplace or stove often, debris can get clogged in your chimney and start a fire when you light it up. Call in a professional chimney inspector and cleaner to make sure that you can safely light a fire when the temperatures start to drop.

Fill Up Your Pantry

Winter storms in Ontario can shut down your entire city for several days. Heavy snow and ice can make it impossible for you to go and get any essential supplies. Before the winter weather hits, you should start stocking up your pantry. Dried foods, pasta, rice, canned soups, and vegetables can help you get through when you and your family get snowed.

Snowblower Maintenance

Let’s face it, shoveling snow is not a fun task! If you are lucky enough to have a snowblower, it’s essential to make sure that it is in working order before the snow starts to fly. A broken-down machine won’t help you clear a path to your home, car, or walkway. Change your oil, filters, and start your snowblower every couple of weeks and let it run for a few minutes to make sure it is good to go.

Prepping Your Home For A Winter Storm

The threat of devastating winter storms is real when you live in Ontario. Being prepared by following these tips can help you get ready for any emergency and keep your family safe until the snow starts to melt.

How To Avoid Parenting Burnout

1

Taking time away to rest and recharge is important for parents working inside and outside the home for both for the health of the parent and the happiness of the child. Parenting is often about making your child’s needs a priority, but parents need to take time away to meet their own needs as well. Here are some ideas on how to avoid burnout as a parent.

How To Avoid Parenting Burnout
Exhausted mother with daughter

What is Parenting Burnout?

Like marathon runners, parents work long hours caring for their children, often working outside the home as well, and it takes a great deal of energy to keep going for the long haul without taking a break.

Parent burnout can show up in many different forms, but common burnout symptoms are:

  • Limited patience
  • Physical and mental exhaustion
  • Yelling or fighting with children and family members
  • Feelings of inadequacy as a parent
  • Feelings of depression
  • Emotional detachment
  • Irritability and frustration
  • Sleep disorders

Moms and dads who care for children at home full-time can also be at a high risk of parent burnout because of the lack of tangible rewards and reviews that help keep employees happy and motivated in work outside the home.

Take Time Away from Work and Parenting

The best way to avoid burnout is to take time away from work and parenting, but in today’s busy world where extended families are spread across countries and continents, it is not always as simple as sending the kids to grandma’s for the weekend. If you are lucky enough to have grandparents close enough to care for your kids for a day or two, this is a wonderful option. If family is too far away to take on childcare duties, ask your partner or another family member to care for your children for a day or two while you take some time away.

Plan Time for Yourself in Your Weekly Routine

The best way to avoid burning out as a parent is to incorporate time for yourself into your weekly routine. This can be done by agreeing with your partner or close family member to an evening or part of a weekend day which you can have for yourself to rest and recharge. Even simple things like an uninterrupted bath or an afternoon nap can do wonders for the tired parent.

How To Avoid Parenting Burnout

By asking for help within your family and community, it is possible to get the time and space you need to rest and recharge as a parent to avoid a burnout. A happy, well rested parent is more fun to play with and more patient with his or her child’s needs, so by taking care of yourself you are taking care of your child too. Whether you take a weekend retreat or an afternoon nap, don’t forget to take care of the most important person in your child’s life: you!

How To Choose The Right Flooring For Your Home

1

Installing new flooring is one of the most important components of any home renovation. With plenty of options available, picking the right flooring for each space is key. Keeping in mind that your flooring will be seen and walked on every day, it’s definitely a feature that needs to work for your lifestyle and the overall design of your home. Below, we’ll take a look at some crucial factors to consider in order to choose the perfect flooring to suit your home, your lifestyle and your budget.

hardwood floors

Keep Your Floor durable

The amount of foot traffic in a particular room is one of the main factors you should consider. If you have a big family, pets, or maybe even an uncle who’s a little too comfortable stomping through the house in his boots, your flooring will see plenty of wear and tear over time.

Here’s what to consider when search for durable flooring options:

Hardwood flooring

Hardwood flooring is an option that can last for decades. If you’re looking to install in a high-traffic area, such as the living room, look at hardwood flooring options made with wood types that rank high on the Janka hardness scale.

Janka hardness scale

The Janka hardness scale is considered the best measure to determine how much wear various wood types can withstand. The ratings range from 0 to 4000 – the higher the rating, the harder the wood is.

Care & maintenance

While the Janka rating of the wood indicates how strong the floor will be and how much wear and tear it can handle, keep in mind that care and maintenance will also play a big role in the overall appearance and quality of your floor. Certain flooring options will require more effort to maintain than others.

Marble floor

Keep your floor stylish

Your flooring greatly influences the overall look and feel of every room in your home. As such, it’s worth choosing a flooring option that complements the current style and décor of your home.

Marble tile flooring

If you love modern and luxurious design, you can’t go wrong with marble flooring. This flooring option is well-loved for its timeless style and natural beauty.  Marble is available in many colours and can be cut into various shapes.

Ceramic floor tiles

To create a bathroom that feels like a spa retreat, consider ceramic tiles. Since ceramic tiles come in a huge range of colours and designs, ceramic tiles can work for just about any design you can imagine in your bathroom. Ceramic tile is a top bathroom flooring option as it’s also impervious to moisture, bacteria and odours.

Porcelain tiles

Porcelain tiles are a great option for kitchens. They’re waterproof, stain resistant and highly durable – which definitely comes in handy in a mess-prone room. Combining this durability with a striking look, porcelain tile is always a great choice for the kitchen.

Keep it budget-friendly

Installing new flooring in your home is a major renovation project. With that said, the cost of various flooring options is another important factor to consider, especially if you have a set budget. Here are some things to keep in mind:

  1. If you’re working with a larger budget, your flooring options are basically endless. From high-end hardwood to natural stone, the choice is yours! Higher-end flooring options can transform your home’s appearance and raise its resale value.
  2. Wood flooring can cost from $3 to $8 per square foot. Plus, if you have your floors professionally installed, it will add another $5 to $12 per square foot to the price.
  3. Due to its durability, budget-friendliness and real wood appearance, many homeowners lean towards laminate as a flooring option. Laminate can cost anywhere from $2 to $4 per square foot. As for labour costs, expect to pay $2 to $2.50 per square foot. This is a great option if you want to break new ground without breaking the bank.
  4. Another lower cost alternative is luxury vinyl plank (LVP). This synthetic material looks like wood and is hard-wearing and water-resistant. It’s quick and easy to clean LVP flooring, so it’s an ideal choice for kitchens and playrooms.
How To Choose The Right Flooring For Your Home

Ready to renovate? Floor it!

Choosing brand new flooring for your home is a process that involves weighing a number of factors. Your lifestyle, personal style and your budget will all play a role in the type of flooring you choose. Choosing the right flooring can elevate a room or space’s appearance, along with the value of your home, so don’t rush your decision.

Bedwetting in Children: Tips And Facts

    0

Bedwetting, or nocturnal enuresis, can be shameful for many school-age children. There are many physical and emotional reasons why kids wet the bed. Bedwetting can cause extreme emotional shame for children, especially during campouts and sleepovers. They may also sense frustration from even the most patient parent, who must constantly wash and replace dirty sheets and purchase mattress replacements and disposable diapers. To better understand bedwetting in children, you will find below tips and facts to help you.

Bedwetting in Children: Tips And Facts

    Bedwetting Statistics

    1. According to the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, most children stay dry at night by three years of age.
    2. About 13% of six-year olds still wet the bed, while about 5% of ten-year olds do.
    3. Usually, boys wet the bed more often than girls, and it is usually has a genetic link.

    Primary Nocturnal Enuresis (PNE)

Primary Nocturnal Enuresis (PNE) means that a child does not wet the bed out of a neurological, emotional, or medical abnormality. Often, the child’s bladder is just underdeveloped and the hormones that naturally reduce urine production at night alert a child to wake up to urinate are lower than average. The child may also be an especially deep sleeper.

    Secondary Nocturnal Enuresis (SNE)

Secondary Nocturnal Enuresis (SNE) occurs when a child wets the bed after experiencing at least a six-month period of dryness. SNE is usually caused by:

    • Urinary tract infection (UTI)
    • Constipation
    • Bladder problems
    • Smaller than normal bladder
    • Insufficient anti-diuretic hormone production
    • Diabetes
    • Sleep apnea
    • Down syndrome
    • Premature toilet training

Severe stress, fear, sadness, or insecurity may also cause SNE. This may be caused by sexual abuse, a death in the family, extreme bullying, divorce, or change in home or schools.

Tips for Parents of a Bedwetter

There are ways how a parent can help his child with bedwetting:

    1. Limit the child’s liquids before bedtime.
    2. Make sure he uses the restroom before going to bed.
    3. Wake the child once during the night and walk him to the bathroom to empty his bladder.
    4. Purchase a pad for the bed, which senses moisture and sets off an alarm, alerting the child to use the restroom.
    5. Use diapers or waterproof sheets.
    6. Use a motivational system to reward dry nights and be sure to praise him.
    7. Do not yell at or spank the child for wetting the bed, but do ask him to help clean up the mess.
    8. Practice bladder stretching exercises for those with small bladders.
    9. Ask the family physician for a prescription. The most common medications prescribed for bedwetting are Desmopressin, an anti-diuretic hormone, or tricyclic anti-depressants such as amitriptyline or nortriptyline; however, every medication has side effects, which should be discussed at length.
Bedwetting in Children: Tips And Facts

As frustrating as bedwetting may be for both parents and children, there are things that can be done to reduce embarrassment and frustration. Bedwetting is largely a normal phase of life that most children will outgrow.
