Super Easy Apple Hand Pies

I love apple pie! From drinks that are flavoured with apple pie spices, to candles that make a room smell like fresh pie, to of course, the real deal! I guess what I am saying is that any way you present apple pie or share pie recipes, I am interested!

While I have such love for the fall classic treat, I do not have the time to bake a traditional pie every time the mood strikes, much to the dismay of my family. So, I set out to make apple hand pies with pie crust that are perfectly portioned for on the go munching and that would take a lot less time to make, so that we don’t have to give up our favourite fall treat.

Recipe only requires 3 ingredients

This Apple Hand Pies recipe is great because if you have a can of pie filling and a pre-made pie crust in the fridge, you are in business! This recipe for mini apple pie only requires 3 ingredients, and the results are better than any fruit pie that you might find in the pre-packaged snack aisle.

These quick apple hand pies are also so much lighter than the traditional fried hand pie, thanks to the use of the air fryer! You will still get that flaky crispy crust you crave with a hand pie, without all of the added oil needed to fry. That makes them basically guilt free too!

Apple Hand Pies With Pie Crust

Ingredients 

  • 2 Pre Made Pie Crusts
  • 5 oz Can Apple Pie Filling
  • 1 Egg

How to make apple hand pies

  1. Roll out the pie crust and use a cookie cutter to cut out circles.

  • 2. Take a half a spoonful of apple pie filling and place it in the middle of half of your circles.

  • 3. The remaining circles, slightly roll out with a rolling pin so they are a tab but larger than the apple circles.

  • 4. Place the larger circle on top and use a fork to mend together.

  • 5. Egg wash each apple pie.

  • 6. Place in the air fryer for 12-15 minutes at 350 degrees. 
  • 7. Serve the hand held apple pies and enjoy.

It does not matter whether you are young or old, everyone is bound to love these Halloween treat recipes: Zoombie Boogers Popcorn, Spider Cupcakes, and Halloween Trail Mix with Candy Corn!

Zombie Boogers Popcorn

Your kids will love these Zombie Boogers Popcorn because, you know, the greenish snack resembles boogers! The sticky and sweet green buttery syrup toss over the popcorn is such a delicious treat. This recipe is a great addition to your Halloween snacks and feast table.

Ingredients

  • 10 cups plain popped popcorn
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1/4 cup corn syrup
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1-2 teaspoons green food colouring

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 200°F.
  2. In medium saucepan on medium heat, bring sugar, salt, butter, and corn syrup to a boil while stirring consistently. Cook and stir for another 4 minutes.
  3. Stir in baking soda, and green food colouring. Expect the mixture to foam up and double in size.
  4. Remove from heat.
  5. Place popcorn in large bowl. Pour mixture over popcorn in bowl and toss to coat evenly.
  6. Spread popcorn evenly on a foil-lined baking pan.
  7. Bake 1 hour and stir every 15 minutes.
  8. Cool completely.
  9. Store in airtight container.

How To Make A Hippie Costume For Halloween

If you decide to be a hippie for Halloween, making a DIY hippie costume is fun, inexpensive, and allows you to express your personality and creativity. My ideas can work for either a hippie couple costume, a hippie girl costume, a hippie boy costume, a hippie man or woman costume. Tie-dye T-shirt, homemade bell-bottom hippie jeans, pins, a headband, and other accessories will complete this homemade hippie costume! HIPPIE CLOTHES FOR YOUR COSTUME

TIE-DYE T-SHIRTS

Tie-dye T-shirts were big in the 60s, and they’ve made a comeback in recent years. You’ve probably got one around the house. If not, look at second-hand stores or make your own. Simply buy a tie-dye kit, an inexpensive white T-shirt, and follow the directions. You’ll not only have something to wear with your hippie Halloween costume, but also a cool (or should I say “groovy”) shirt to add to your wardrobe. HOW TO MAKE HIPPIE BELL BOTTOMS

If you have a bit of sewing ability (and access to a sewing machine), you can transform an old pair of jeans into hippie bell bottoms.

WHAT YOU’LL NEED:

SUPPLIES

  • A pair of old jeans (hip hugger jeans, either straight-leg or with a flare)
  • About 1/4 yard of the fabric of your choice

TOOLS

INSTRUCTIONS

  • Start with a pair of hip hugger jeans, either straight-leg or with a flare (Skinny jeans will not work as well.) Take out the seams on the sides of the legs, starting at the bottom and going up about nine inches with a seam ripper.
  • Reinforce the end of the seam by machine sewing over it. The raw edges should be already pressed to the inside of the jeans; if yours aren’t, press them with a hot steam iron.
  • Next, cut four triangles out of print fabric (the wilder the pattern, the better). Your triangles should be symmetrical, at least 8 inches at the base (more if you’re starting with straight-leg jeans) and about 9 ½ inches tall. If possible, cut your fabric, so the selvage (finished end) is on the bottom of the triangle. If that isn’t possible, cut your triangle about 10 inches tall and sew a small hem on the bottom.
  • Next, spread out one seam to form a triangle and place over a piece of fabric, print side up. Baste or pin into place; then top stitch. Do this for all four sides.

If all this is just too much sewing for you, simply find a pair of jeans with as much flare as possible. Check second-hand stores if you can’t find any old jeans that work.

“HIPPIE SYMBOLS”

Hippie Symbols

Now you are ready to paint designs on your jeans. For inspiration, do an internet search on “hippie symbols.” Peace signs, simple flowers, and smiley faces all work well. Hippies also liked words like LOVE, PEACE, or FLOWER POWER written in bubble letters. Using acrylic paints and a black permanent marker for outlining, paint several designs on the front of the jeans. To make perfect circles for your peace signs and smiley faces, use a pill cap as a pattern. Let your jeans dry thoroughly before wearing them. (Acrylic craft paint only takes a few minutes to dry.)

HIPPIE ACCESSORIES FOR YOUR COSTUME

HOW TO MAKE HIPPIE PINS

Make your own hippie pins. Do an internet search for “hippie symbols,” “peace sign,” “flower power,” or “smiley” and print out several designs in an appropriate size, preferably on card stock, and cut them out. If possible, laminate your pins. If you don’t have access to a laminator, glue them onto a piece of cardboard and cover with clear contact paper. Then simply tape a safety pin to the back. If you don’t want to make your own pins, you can always purchase custom enamel pins.

HIPPIE JEWELRY

Both male and female hippies liked to wear lots of jewelry. Look for long beads, macramé jewelry, and pendants in your jewelry collection or at a second-hand store. You may be able to find an inexpensive peace sign pendant or other hippie symbol pendant at a costume supply store. If not, make your own wired jewelry, using the same technique you used to make the pins, but instead of putting a safety pin on the back, punch a hole in the top and string it on a long, thick piece of string.

WIG

If you are not blessed with long, straight hair, you will want to invest in a wig. You can find hippie wigs at a costume supply store or even at a second-hand store. Remember, both men and women had long hair in the 1960s. For fun, choose a colour different from your own.

HEADBAND

For a headband, fold a bandana into a headband shape, or cut a long piece of fabric and tie it around your head.

ROUND WIRE-RIM GLASSES

Hippies wore round wire-rim glasses. Ask your friends if they have any old glasses that fit the bill, or look at second-hand stores. To keep from getting a headache from wearing the wrong prescription, simply take out the lenses. (Look for tiny screws that allow you to loosen the lenses.) You may also be able to find hippie sunglasses at a costume supply store.

BELT

To show off your jeans, you will want to tuck your T-shirt in. Use a macramé or braided belt, if possible, or simply cut a long piece of fabric to use as a belt.

OTHER TIPS FOR A HIPPIE LOOK

For footwear, use earthy-looking sandals or go barefoot, if the weather allows. Hippies rarely wore makeup, instead preferring the natural look. For an extra touch, add some tattoos. Look at costume supply stores for hippie themed temporary tattoos, or simply draw your own. To complete the hippie persona, make the peace sign (with both fingers pointing up, not sideways) and say things like, “Groovy,” “Far out,” or “outta sight.”

LION PAPER CRAFT FOR KIDS WITH PRINTABLE TEMPLATE

LIST OF SUPPLIES

  1. Coloured craft papers
  2. Craft glue
  3. Black marker pen
  4. Pencil

INSTRUCTIONS

STEP 1

Select orange and yellow coloured craft papers for the lion paper craft. Trace the mane patterns, tail tip (teardrop) and the strip pattern on orange coloured craft paper, trace the small round shape on brown, or black coloured paper and trace the rest of the body patterns (body, head, legs and tail) on yellow coloured craft papers. Cut out the traced patterns.

Attach the small mane pattern in the middle of the big mane pattern.

Attach the 2 leg patterns on the bottom side of the lower body pattern.

STEP 4

Attach the orange strip along the top middle side of the head and keeping it towards the inner side. Attach the small brown round shaped on the inner end of the orange strip.

Attach the head in the middle of the mane pattern. Attach the tail on either side of the body pattern.

Attach the head on the top side of the body pattern. Use a black marker pen to draw the eyes, whiskers, and mouth of the paper lion.

Many things can take place in school to make a child unhappy. Feeling as if a teacher is picking on her, not being able to keep up with the class in her schoolwork, feelings of self-consciousness, or dealing with bullying are just a few of the culprits. Not all children will speak up and address their feelings or situations, so it’s up to the parents to look for signs that something isn’t right. You will find below 4 signs your child is unhappy at school and how to find out why.

Signs Your Child is Unhappy At School

Behavior

A child’s behavior can say a lot about their emotional well-being. If a child normally behaves well at school or at home and suddenly begins to get in trouble with teachers or her parents, it may indicate that something in her life has changed. On the other hand, if a child is normally quiet or timid and suddenly becomes hyper or nervous, it may be sign of something amiss. She may appear angry, aggressive, or moody. These also may be signs of puberty, so taking into account the child’s age is important, too. These behaviour changes shouldn’t be assumed to be puberty-related, however.

Silence

When asked how school was or how a particular subject was, a child who is unhappy at school may refuse to talk about it. He may be quiet in the classroom, as well, refusing to ask or answer questions. He may be afraid of confrontation with a teacher or a bully if he says anything. This can often point to problems he’s facing when being ridiculed for answering questions wrong, or feeling as if he’s not intelligent because he doesn’t know the answers. While it’s common for kids to pick on each other for making mistakes in the classroom, it can be extremely embarrassing for some children, forcing them to not even try.

Physical signs

When things are really bad at school, some kids begin to exhibit physical signs such as thumb sucking or bed wetting, nail biting, or stomach issues such as vomiting or diarrhea. The child may experience headaches or changes in appetite and weight. These symptoms may be present during the wee, but subside over the weekend or a long school break. It’s important that these signs are not ignored if the other, more mild symptoms were. Physical signs present themselves when a person cannot emotionally handle the problems they are facing, and may lead to serious problems such as dehydration.

Complaining

Many children will be vocal about issues at school even if they are not coming right out and saying what’s wrong. These children may continually complain about school or how the teacher hates them or how much they hate a student at school. They may groan daily about having to do math or reading. Ignoring these statements as being something all kids do could be a mistake.

Finding answers

Ask the child why they feel the teacher hates her or why she dislikes the student in question so much. Investigate, ask the teacher about the child and her school work or whether she’s seen any signs of bullying. Find out from others how the child behaves in school. If problems continue or become worse, talk to a physician about the situation. He may rule out any physical problems that could be causing the symptoms or suggest therapy for the child to determine the actual cause.

As a parent, it is a continual obligation to play detective. Children don’t always talk to their parents about their problems because they want to handle it themselves. They may feel that involving the parent may make the situation worse; however, a child should feel safe in school and not torn apart for what they cannot do. Bullying, from anyone, should not be tolerated. Read the signs your child is unhappy at school and investigate to find the reasons why they are there!

The best things about getting older is knowing I accomplished many things in my life such as founding the Ottawa Mommy Club website to support mothers and their families in the Ottawa region. Also, receiving the City of Ottawa City Builder Award in 2011 for demonstrating outstanding volunteerism and extraordinary commitment to making our city a better place was quite an accomplishment. Notwithstanding, that I have two great children that are now adults, and a fantastic marriage.

It’s been great watching myself reach goals and desires I wanted in my younger years. I can turn over at night and sleep with a satisfied mind knowing I achieved what I set out to accomplish. Surprisingly, I can now rift off into a land of done that, tried this, and “no” I don’t want to be forced to do anything I don’t want to do anymore. Now, I don’t have to worry about a house payment and worrying about where the money will come to pay the rent or to buy food. I had goals and I had every intention of achieving them, and yes, it wasn’t all that easy, it took a lot of blood, sweat, and tears. To wake up and find many years have passed and I was not even aware of my age or about growing old.

Maturity and Experience

Growing old brings about maturity and experience in many avenues. When we are “young” and “green” we learn from our mistakes and from taking the wrong turn many times in our lives. This causes us to learn from our mistakes and to keep us on our goals path. We enjoy reaching our goals in many areas as we mature in our lives. Many times we don’t take the time to “spot” the wrinkles and the “gray” hairs because we are interested in making life as good as possible.

It’s strange when we are young, we “think” we’ll always be young until one day we look in the mirror and ask who is that looking back at me? When we get up and our body aches, we finally realize “age” is becoming a factor in our lives. This caused me to set back, and realize hey, it was a good journey getting older, I deserve the wrinkles and the gray hair, because I earned them and I’ll not be ashamed of them either.

I found in my life that we are given, by our Creator, many talents that we are not aware we have. It is most exciting when we find we can sing, write, do arts and crafts, make jewelery, be a good cook, etc., and find the enjoyment in performing these talents. Many people never push to find out what their talents really are and they miss out on so many wonderful things they can enjoy until the wake up one day and find an older body.

Retirement

I’d say some of the best things about getting older is realizing what you can do and what you can accomplish getting to a ripe old age. When I retire from my job in a few years, I will be able to travel without worrying about getting back to work and sleep in as long as I want to (missing out on all those rainy and snowy days and fighting to get to work on time). I can allow the sunshine to come into my window to kiss my eyes open and take time to enjoy the scenery.

The exhilarating part, I don’t have to worry about taking children to babysitters anymore, or breaking down on the highway with the kids in the car on a scorching rainy day like it happened 10 years ago. I can enjoy my friends or stay up all night if I want to. At anytime, I can go any place I want because I have “no” time constraints. I can take the time to enjoy my family and my future grandchildren without punching a time clock.

The Best Things About Getting Older

Growing older doesn’t mean losing young or slowing down, it means living each moment to the fullest and enjoying every activity to the hilt. We should never consider ourselves as old because most of us have been blessed to have the same minds we had of yesteryear, but a more matured one. Of course, we might look older, but we are “still” the same person in an “older” body. We should never be ashamed of our age and be proud we maintain the abilities that we have.

Spiked Agua Fresca recipe is the perfect way to quench your thirst and unwind this summer. Made with fresh watermelon, lime juice, mint, and rum, this is likely to become your favourite cocktail of the summer.

I love to make easy cocktails on a hot summer day. After putting in the time at work, it is nice to be able to mix up something wonderful in just a few moments of time so I can get to the serious business of relaxing! This recipe was inspired by some of the wonderful Agua Frescas I have had the pleasure of sipping, made only better with a splash of rum. If you aren’t a drinker, feel free to omit the rum and you will still have a seriously delicious and refreshing beverage that is perfect for summer sipping.

If you are having a family party, or a BBQ, this makes a great beverage to serve them too. They will love the combination of tangy lime, sweet watermelon, rum, and cooling mint together. This is best served chilled or over ice. You can make a batch ahead of time and keep it in the fridge so it is ready when you are.

2. Set an Example Yourself

Children tend to mimic what their parents do, and while it is a good thing in itself, we tend to silently hate it. You can introduce your children to the concept of giving in no better way than doing it yourself. The more you give it importance, the more your children will understand its importance too.

3. Help them Feel the Need

This one’s super important as the more your kids understand the need of those less fortunate ones around them, the more they’ll be able to develop the quality of compassion, and the more they will be able to take up the initiative to give back to the their community and society.

Why does hair tangle?

There are a few reasons why your hair may tangle. Hair texture, frequency of brushing, exposure to wind, as well as the healthiness of the hair can all contribute to hair tangling.

Your hair is more likely to tangle if:

  • It is long and fine.
  • It is super thick and curly.
  • You don’t brush your hair throughout the day.
  • It is very dry and damaged.
  • You sleep with your hair down.

Keep your hair moisturized

Healthy, well-moisturized hair is less likely to tangle than dry hair with split ends. Make sure you regularly trim split ends and use a conditioner to keep your hair in good condition.

Avoid friction

Friction between your hair and the pillow can cause tangles while you sleep when the cotton fibers rub against the hair. To prevent this, switch to using satin pillowcases as these are smooth and slippery, preventing the hair from catching and tangling. If satin pillowcases are too expensive, you could try places a satin nightgown or slip over the pillow instead.

Prepare your hair for bed

Loose hair is more prone to becoming tangled as it is more likely to rub against the pillow or your nightclothes. A good way to minimize this is to braid your hair before bed. Brush your hair and divide it into three sections. Braid the hair bypassing the left-hand section over the middle, followed by the right-hand section over the new middle section. Proceed in this way, alternately passing the left and right sections over the middle one until you reach the end of the hair. Finally, fasten the end with a hairband.

It can be a little tricky to braid your own hair at first, but with some practice, it will become easier. Since the braid is only for wearing whilst sleeping, there is no need to ensure that it looks neat and tidy. A rough, uneven braid will still do the job of minimizing tangles during your sleep. 

Keep your hair contained and tangle-free at night in a bun

If you find braids too difficult or uncomfortable, a good alternative way to keep your hair contained and tangle-free at night is a bun. Buns are less secure than braids and, therefore, less good at minimizing tangles, but are still better than leaving your hair loose. Simply pull your hair back into a ponytail and secure it with a hairband. Twist the hair around the base of the ponytail and secure it with another hairband or a scrunchie.

As with the braid, neatness is not important as the hairstyle will only be worn in bed. It is also important to make sure you remove all hair clips and barrettes before bed and use tangle friendly hair bands like scrunchies rather than elastic bands.

Preparing Your Kids For Back To School During COVID

Come September, about three of every four families under the Ottawa Carleton District School Board (OCDSB) and the Ottawa Catholic School Board (OCSB) are expected to send their kids for in person learning at school. It is an important and welcome step for all. My granddaughter moving to grade two cannot wait to get back to school, especially to play with her classmates! This article provides some tips on preparing your kids for back to school during COVID.

Most kids will be returning to school after nearly 5 months since March. That will take some getting used to. From worksheets and virtual sessions from inside the comforts of home to now learning in-person. Usual back-to-school flurries of a new teacher and perhaps new classmates as well.

How school environment will be different during COVID?

Further, the school environment will be different given COVID adjustments. Play and social interactions at school will be restricted. Limited access to playground, structures, gym, and library. Kids may miss some of their friends who opt for remote learning instead of being in person. Friends outside the immediate classroom will not be accessible. They will certainly miss a number of out-of-school activities such as sports or birthday parties. Some kids, school bus drivers, and school staff will be in masks, which may seem strange.

Going back to school is good, but parents need to be aware that kids are not returning to the usual, pre-COVID environment. Younger kids will not have spent as much energy at school and will want to do more physically when they get back home. Limited social interactions may disappoint some kids that school is not as fun as it used to be. Some may even be scared and stressed with the restrictions and new procedures.

Thankfully, parents can support their kids in this ‘new’ normal by planning, being flexible and proactive. Following are some suggestions for families to keep in mind.

Make a ‘COVID’ back-to-school plan and role-play

Kids feel reassured when they know what plans are in place and what changes to expect. Talk with your kids about what might be different. How will the classroom look like? How about lunch and recess? Which activities will not be there? Walking through the specifics can give your kids something concrete to hold onto. Practicing different scenarios ahead of time is a good way to give kids a sense a control. Give extra support to your child at home by creating a routine around school and schoolwork.

Few points to factor in your plan:

  1. Ingrain hand washing or sanitizing at every transition of the day. It sounds easy enough, but try to ingrain in your child’s head the importance of cleaning their hands whenever they leave home, arrive at school, and enter the classroom
  2. Invest in a mask with ‘superpowers’. Buy a washable cloth face covering that expresses your child’s personality – after all, they will be wearing it for a long time. Perk of ditching the disposable mask is preventing an unfortunate mix-up with other students’ masks. For younger kids struggling with wearing masks, help them feel more comfortable with the idea by making it into a fun game. One idea is to say, “Your mask gives you superpowers, so you want to make sure to keep it on all the time. And if you touch your face or touch someone else, that reduces your power.”
  3. Have your child shower when they come home. Switch their normal shower or bath time by bathing and changing their clothes right when they return from school
  4. Talk to your kids about what to do if they do not feel safe or other kids are not following the rules. They should know that they could talk to the teacher or tell you if that happens
  5. Tell your kids, “If anything changes, we will work as a team to come up with a new plan. We will figure out together to keep you learning and connecting with other people while keeping you safe.”

Monitor, stay informed, and adapt!

Kids are resilient by nature, but parents can model that resilience too. Being flexible, adapting to change, and focusing on the positive are all important life skills to have, and COVID is a great teaching moment for developing those skills. 

It is possible that schools will change procedures, depending on the local context. Because of the evolving situation, parents will need to be flexible and ready to adapt.

Find out how to stay in touch with your children’s teacher or school to stay informed, ask questions, and get more guidance. Also, let them know if your child is facing specific challenges, like heightened anxiety due to the pandemic. Parent or community groups can also be a good way to stay informed. 

Try to be flexible and forgiving with your children and yourselves. This year is going to be harder for everyone: kids, parents, teachers, and schools. The goals we want to achieve may change as the year passes.

Listen to your child

Encourage your children to ask questions and express their feelings with you. Remember that your child may have different reactions to stress, so be patient and understanding. Continue to create a supportive and nurturing environment and respond positively to questions and expressions of their feelings. Drawing, stories, family games, and other activities may help to open a discussion. Show support and let your child know that it is not only okay, but also normal, to feel frustrated, or anxious at times like this. 

Try not to minimize or avoid their concerns. Be sure to acknowledge their feelings and assure them that it is natural to feel scared about these things. Demonstrate that you are listening by giving them your full attention, and make sure they understand that they can talk to you and their teachers whenever they like.

Stay centred to better handle stress

The new learning environment may stress kids. New rules may force you to change plans and reset expectations stressing you, the parent. Important for the family to stay centred to be in a better position to handle stress.

  1. Positive relationships with parents is a key driver of social and emotional development of kids. Spending quality time together builds positive relationships. Joint family activities such as cooking, reading, or games are some places to start
  2. Join a parent or community group to connect with other parents who are going through the same experience to share tips and get support
  3. Incorporate play in to learning. The Ontario government shares some great resources and my favourite on the list is for K-3.
  4. Practice mindfulness. Mindfulness improves executive function, attention, and emotional control. Will help lower stress, especially for children with any learning disabilities. These 5 mindfulness activities for the classroom can also be applied at home.
  5. Find joy by helping others. The pandemic is stressing the financial and emotional state of many families. Find an avenue to support and channel your family’s efforts. Raising money via homemade cards and other crafts is an example.

This paper craft vegetables activity is great because you can print the free template and offer this project to kids of all ages. Instructions for the cabbage paper craft

  • Step 1

Select different coloured craft papers for each of the vegetable paper craft. The pattern for each vegetable is quite simple and easy to craft. I have created the cabbage paper craft for you to follow along. The other paper craft veggies are pretty easy to do by simply following the templates above and cutting the coloured paper craft paper accordingly than gluing together the pieces. Select 3 different shades of green coloured craft papers for the cabbage craft. Trace the cabbage patterns on the selected green coloured craft papers. Trace different patterns on different shades of green papers. Cut out the traced patterns.

Grab the big pattern and attach the medium pattern (teardrop-like) in the middle of it.

If we expect our children to ever have a chance at becoming productive members of society, it’s going to take more than just the teachers working with them. It is going to take a collective effort from the teachers and parents to solidify our kids’ place in the world. Some parents don’t know where to begin and that’s okay. Here are a few pointers on How Parents Can Get Involved In Their Child’s Education.

Open up the line of communication with the teacher

Be a proactive parent. Parents should not wait for the teacher to extend an invitation to them, soliciting their involvement. If possible, parents should take their child to school on the first day and have a short conversation with their child’s teachers. It is important for teachers to know that the parents plan on being an essential part of their child’s academic excellence and see that they are getting involved in their child’s education.

Very busy parents may not always be able to attend the fall and spring open house or that teacher/parent conference. Fortunately, advances in technology have given parents the opportunity to communicate from a distance. Email and parent communication systems, on school websites, make this possible. Even making or returning a phone call could make the difference in the child’s success or failure. Open up the line of communication, because let’s face it, some teachers may not call a parent until there is a problem and that could be too late.

Join the local teacher/parent organization

Admittedly, curtain bars are among the most ignored places in a house. We all see them every day, slide curtains over them, and forget about cleaning them.

  • Starting off, we can use a microfibre duster or a vacuum cleaner to clear the dry dust off. After that, add three drops of dish liquid to a bucket and add water. Now take a microfibre cloth and dunk it into the bucket.
  • Pull out the cloth and squeeze it to remove excess water.
  • Simply twist the blinds making enough space to wipe each of them with the cloth.

4. Underneath The Bed and Sofa 

If you have a low floored bed or sofa, you would know how challenging it can be to clean up the floor underneath it. In most cases, people somehow manage to broom over 70-80% of the area, and clearly, that’s not sufficient.

Too much dust can cause germs, plus a house for insects and form massive dust particles. To clean such areas, you may need to use a flexible spin mop that can comfortably reach such corners.

We provide below an overview of safety tips and health benefits for using essential oils for baby massage and a list of our favourite blends.

Essential Oil and Babies – A Caution

Natural oils are extremely potent and powerful. Whilst they are safe to use in remedies and treatments, they should be used with extreme care. If in any doubt as to the safety of an essential oil or blend of oils, do not use and contact a professional aromatherapist.

As a general rule, the following rules apply if using essential oils with toddlers and babies:

  • Do not administer essential oils internally.
  • Avoid the eye area or the mucous membranes. Flush eyes immediately if affected with sterile water and seek medical help immediately.
  • Before using an essential oil blend, always perform a skin test 48 hours before use. Dab the skin of the inner elbow with a small amount of the diluted oil, cover with a plaster, and leave. If irritation occurs, or if neat oil is ever spilt on a child’s skin, flood the area with vegetable oil.
  • Never apply essential oil to the skin. Always blend in a child friendly carrier oil.

The amount of essential oil added to a carrier oil should always be less than for an adult. As a rule, there should be one part essential oil for 100 parts carrier oil. For babies, this would work out to be one drop of essential oil to 10ml of base oil.

If creating a blend that requires more than one type of essential oil, add one drop of each of the oils to a bottle and mix together. Then, take one drop of this blended mixture and add it to a base oil.

Not all essential oils are suitable for children, so only choose oils which are known to be child friendly. Good oils that are safe to use to treat a variety of infant complaints are:

Never store a baked potato (in the fridge) in the foil you bake it in. Believe it or not, doing so encourages the growth of botulism spores. Who knew?

I’ve mentioned this before, but I totally recommend using real butter in recipes like this one. Your end results are so much better, even though you end up paying a little more. Some people aren’t fans of the heat element associated with sriracha. If you fall into this category, leave it out, add less, or replace it with good old ketchup. You aren’t going to see a difference texture-wise at all.

There’s nothing wrong with baking these potatoes a few extra minutes to achieve more of a crunch factor… think “hash brown potato crunchiness.” Just keep an eye and them, making sure they don’t burn. Let’s talk cheese! Feel free to replace the suggested Colby Jack with one (or more) of your of your favourites. Swiss would pair nicely with the bacon in this recipe. Don’t you think?

  • 6 large russet potatoes
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 cup of unsalted butter (2 sticks) cubed
  • 1 1/2 cup bacon, chopped
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 1 cup Colby jack shredded cheese
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1/4 cup Sriracha

  • Parchment paper
  • Frying pan

Twice Baked Bacon Potato Recipe

How to you make a twice baked potato

Preheat your oven to 400 degrees.

Wash your potatoes to get the dirt off them and then pat dry them with a paper towel. Place potatoes on the baking sheet fitted with parchment paper. Poke holes using a fork in your potatoes and then place in the oven for 1 hour until cooked throughly.

Using the skillet pan, fry up your bacon to your liking. Once cooked place on a plate to cool. Chop up your bacon to get 1 1/2 cup.

In a large mixing bowl, add the cubes of butter, bacon, and sour cream.

Remove the potatoes from the oven and reduce the oven temperature to 350 degrees. Cut the potatoes in half and scrap out the insides and place into the large mixing bowl. Place the hollowed potatoes back onto the baking sheet.

Using a masher, mash the potatoes, butter, bacon, and sour cream together until slightly combined. Add the cheese and milk and mix until thoroughly. Once mixed well, scoop filling back into the potatoes and top with cheese.

Place back into the oven for 15-20 minutes until potato is warm and cheese is melted.

Baked Potato toppings: Drizzle the sriracha and top with sour cream.

This comes in perfect timing with the whole debate with parents everywhere regarding sending their children back to school this September. Ideally, I want my eldest son to go to Senior Kindergarten. In the perfect world, it’s great for him, he gets to socialize and learn, and learn to be away from us (he doesn’t do well with that part). School was a struggle to start and there were lots of tears until he finally came around; however, we pulled him out for a 2 weeks vacation and it got him back to square one. For that reason (there will be inevitable 2 week quarantine) and generally initial safety if I can help it, we are keeping him home for at least the first semester. This super cool robot teaches you how to draw with a variety of flash cards of different images. You simply place Quincy the Robot Artist in front of a piece of paper and hold up the little flash cards provided to his ‘eye’ and he reads the USB to know what he must teach you to draw.

In addition to drawing, there are other various function cards that are great for learning including numbers and letters. Perfect for identifying letters, learning to spell and learning math calculations. We had so much fun in the first session and it’s going to come in handy when we are in our full on learning mode this September. The kids LOVED holding up the little QR code to see what Quincy was going to do next and we have many more cards to get through yet!

Frozen Fruit Cups are the ultimate summer treat. They are packed with healthy fruits and frozen to perfection for a sweet way to beat the heat on a hot day! These are easy to make, and are sure to be a family favourite.

As soon as the temperatures start to warm up, I start to crave all things frozen! While it would be easy to dive into a pint of ice cream every evening, it might not be the best choice. To combat my desires for frozen goodness, I came up with something healthier that was so good, I knew I had to share it! 

Variety of fruits

This Frozen Fruit Cups recipe makes use of a variety of fruits. I love it because you can make it anytime, there is no need to wait until everything is in season. With frozen strawberries, canned pineapple, and mandarin oranges to name a few, this frozen fruit cups dessert comes together easily to create a one of a kind treat that kids and adults will love.

Freezing Time

This Frozen Fruit cups recipe does require 3 hours of freeze time. Make a batch early in the day and leave in the freezer for a cool refreshment in the evening. If you are anticipating guests, this is an easy way to wow them with dessert without too much fuss or any need to heat up the house baking. You can definitely make these ahead of time, but plan to eat them within a few days for maximum freshness.

Frozen Fruit Cups Recipe

Equipment required

  • Mixing Bowls – Stainless Steel
  • 10 cups or Mason Jars (1 cup/ 7-10 oz. in size)

Ingredients

  • 12 oz frozen pineapple juice concentrate
  • 6 oz frozen orange juice concentrate
  • 1 cup water
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tbsp lemon juice
  • 2 packages of frozen strawberries (sliced)
  • 294 ml or 10 oz mandarin oranges (drained)
  • 2 – 398 ml or 14 oz pineapple (crushed)
  • 3 bananas (sliced)

Instructions

  • In a large bowl, mix all of the ingredients together.
  • Spoon into each cup or jar until it is about 3/4 full.
  • Place the cups in the freezer for at least 3 hours.
  • Remove 30 minutes to 1 hour before serving as you want them to be slushy.

  3. Black marker pen

Instructions

  • Step 1

Select 2 different light shades of brown coloured craft papers, dark brown coloured paper and cream or off-white coloured paper for this craft. Trace the squirrel patterns on the selected craft papers and cut them out nicely.

Attach the oval shaped piece in the middle of the main body pattern of the paper squirrel. Attach the thin tail pattern along the left side of the thick tail pattern. After, attach the small oval shaped cutout in the middle of the heart-like shaped (face) cutout. And lastly, attach the small square (white paper) below the small brown oval shape.

Attach the heart-like pattern in the middle of the head pattern. Attach the head on the top side of the main body pattern.

Although, this one was for the kids interests, and Jax chose this book, it certainly kept my husband and I engaged. I personally learned that the first skyscraper was built in Chicago in 1885, amongst many other fascinating things I discovered! I think this will be a great learning tool for my kids, especially when they are a bit older!
