Laundry Hacks for Busy Moms

Laundry is one of the most dreaded household chores. No one likes the hours of backbreaking work. Folding load after load after load is enough to make any busy mom scream out in surrender. Unfortunately, that doesn’t stop the laundry from piling up. Thankfully, there are some laundry hacks that can make your life easier.

Laundry Hacks for Busy Moms

Washer and Dryer

1. Wash One Load a Day

First thing first. Stop doing laundry one day a week. This allows the laundry to pile up to an unclimbable mountain’s worth of dirty, stinky clothes. Wash one load a day and you’ll find that laundry is much easier to handle. In fact, it won’t seem like much of a chore at all. You can purchase colour-catching sheets that will allow you to wash all sorts of colours together without worry.

2. Remove Blood and Other Tough Stains with Dawn and Peroxide

Tough stains an issue? No more. Mix 2-parts peroxide with 1-part Dawn dish soap to make a stain remover powerful enough to remove life’s worst stains. Just mix the two together and use a bit of elbow grease to scrub the stains out. This works for fresh and set-in stains.

Vinegar

3. Use Vinegar to Get Whites Whiter

Did you know that you don’t have to use bleach to get your whites whiter? White vinegar is an excellent addition to any laundry room. You can use 1 cup of white vinegar per load to not only whiten your whites, but also remove odours and even soften your clothes. It’s a powerhouse for your laundry.

4. Get Rid of Ink Stains with Hand Sanitizer

Did your kid get ink on his shirt? No worries. You can use hand sanitizer to remove the stain. Saturate the area with hand sanitizer and allow to set for 10 minutes before washing normally.

5. Soak Up Grease Stains with Baby Powder

Even baby powder is a great addition to your laundry room. If your husband loves to work on his car, you’ll definitely want to keep baby powder handy. You can sprinkle it on grease stains, dust off the excess, and allow it to set to soak up the grease. Repeat this process until the grease is gone.

6. Save on Fabric Softener

Did you know that you can get three times as much from your fabric softener by simply diluting it with water? You’ll want to pour your fabric softener into a bucket and then fill the fabric softener bottle with water twice to dilute it. You can then put old washcloths into the mixture and wring them out before adding to your dryer along with your washed clothes. This can save you a lot of money over the years.

Laundry doesn’t have to be complicated or even time-consuming. There are things you can do to easily remove stains, get your whites whiter, and reduce the amount of time spent sorting, washing, and folding. If you’re tired of laundry being one of the worst chores, try these hacks. These laundry hacks are sure to make doing laundry easier. Best of all, some of these laundry hacks can even save you money.

5 Tips to Relieve Anxiety

6

Did you know that up to 70 percent of adults in the Canada acknowledge that they experience bouts of anxiety on a frequent basis? The truth is that anxiety is a common experience for a significant number of people. Anxiety typically makes you feel like you are stuck and have no idea how to feel better again. Your mind and body automatically focus on a train of what-ifs and maybes without certain control over what happens. It is even easy to unknowingly do things that further fuel your anxiety rather than make you feel better.

5 Tips to Relieving Anxiety
Woman that seemed stressed out

So how do you relieve yourself from anxiety? The good news is that there are numerous techniques and tools that help you to manage anxiety with ease. Anxiety is not something that can just disappear overnight. It requires gradual changes in your life as well as your day to day routines. Gradual changes take some time to work effectively. And depending on the intensity of your anxiety, you might need a much more comprehensive treatment regimen. However, before you decide to commit to that, here are 5 simple ways to get relief from your anxiety symptoms.

5 Tips to Relieving Anxiety

  1. Use Weighted Blankets

Weighted blankets typically weigh between four and thirty pounds. They are slightly heavier than the kind of blankets that people normally buy. These blankets have been optimized for people who are suffering from disorders such as insomnia, anxiety, autism and many more. They are either used to complement a designated anxiety therapy or even as a better alternative to more complex treatments.

The heavy blanket for anxiety helps you to manage anxiety by creating a calm and relaxed state that allows you to sleep better. The blanket grounds your body while you are sleeping and also stimulate deep pressure touch therapy that helps to reduce high anxiety levels. Grounding significantly reduces night time cortisol levels.

5 Tips to Relieving Anxiety
Woman meditating
  1. Meditation

You can incorporate meditation into your daily routine to inspire a feeling of peace and bring along positive vibes. Meditate by thinking calm thoughts, having an open mind and being ready to tackle any unexpected things that come your way.

Scientific experts have discovered that meditation helps to increase the quantity of grey matter in the brain. What this does is that it rewires the body to stress and worry less. Meditation is also integral in monitoring your brains patterns and getting a hang of how your mind conjures anxious thoughts. This helps to learn how to distance your mind from such thoughts.

  1. Take Deep Breaths

Normally, the first thing that you need to do when you get anxious is to take deep breaths. Deep breathing is a great technique that instantly reduces your anxiety by triggering the body’s natural response. These deep and steady breaths send signals to your brain telling it that, at that precise moment, it is okay to relax. The presence of short and sharp breaths only tell your body that you are in a panicked state and the anxiety immediately kicks in. Learn how to control and manage your breathing and you will be able to control your anxiety with ease.

5 Tips to Relieving Anxiety

  1. Regular Exercise

Most people negate the effect that working out has on our mental health. People who suffer from anxiety need to have a consistent workout regimen because this movement helps to improve the body’s blood flow. Working out also helps to regulate neurotransmitter production and ultimately calm any anxiety symptoms. While exercise does not necessarily provide a permanent solution to your anxiety woes, it will considerably give you relief daily.

  1. Get Enough Sleep

Skipping sleep or having terrible sleeping habits works as a great trigger to your anxiety symptoms. Sleep is supposed to help you keep your physical and mental stress and anxiety levels normal or even reduce them completely. So, missing those important bedtime hours will have serious implications on your anxiety management and control techniques as well as progress.

How Parents Can Enjoy Holidays With Kids

4

Holidays are supposed to be the best days for working parents to take a tea break and unwind, but how can you enjoy a stress-free holiday when you have kids restlessly tumbling and rolling around while vacationing on a beautiful cottage in Cobourg Beach! Our tips on How Parents Can Enjoy Holidays With Kids should help plan a fun long weekend!

How Parents Can Enjoy Weekends and Holidays With Kids

A family is a team, you live with and for each other, and one loves and takes care of another. And as a team you do things together, spending quality time with each other — a meaningful moment that forever will be kept in a child’s memory for a lifetime, thus sending a strong message of love to one another. See below some holiday ideas that parents and kids would enjoy together.

How Parents Can Enjoy Weekends and Holidays With Kids

Travel together

A study showed that family trips have a profound and lasting impact on kids’ overall happiness and well-being. Spending a holiday together — whether at home or going to new places or doing a new activity — helps to develop parts of the brain of the child that is associated with everything from stress management to an improved ability to learn. In fact, kids who go on vacation come back to school and score higher grades, especially in reading, math and general knowledge. Researchers also found out that vacations are beneficial in building lasting memories.

“Mind” the kids

Whether you like it or not, as a responsible parent you will need to deal with your children all the time, 24 hours a day with no day off or holidays, with them or apart. So when you plan the best weekend getaway, consider a place, time and activity that could accommodate the whole family and which everyone, especially your kids, would enjoy — like great family ski resorts in Mont Tremblant.

Pig out with the kiddos

If you decide to spend the holiday at home in Toronto then make sure you have enough food for everyone to feast on. You can either cook your own special recipe of crispy orange beef and mac n’ cheese or if you opt to be a little lazy for a day, then try ordering food delivery and have the best time pigging out with the kiddos at home.

Go and see a movie

Movie watching will have to come to a mutual understanding, as your kids might have a different choice than yours. In such cases, kids would ask to go in a separate cinema from parents which seems fair, but will defeat the purpose of family bonding. As a result, kids are usually the winners.

Meaningful holidays

If you have been spending holidays roaming around the world and unwinding in white sand beaches for many years now, you may want to spend the next holiday differently from the rest. Take the family to do some gift giving at nursing homes, or volunteer to help in a soup kitchen in the community. You may also have the kids prepare and pack their old toys and clothes to donate to street children, or organize food in a local food bank. This will teach kids the virtue of giving back.

3. The Magic Kingdom is built on the second level of the park. The first level is a series of “utilidors” that allow the costume characters access to move around the park without being seen by guests. They also allow emergency vehicles access when needed, and are used to remove trash from the park.

4. The skull on the headboard at Disneyland’s Pirates of the Caribbean is actually a real skull.

5 Good Reasons to Hire an Interior Designer

If you have been hesitant to request the services of an interior designer, perhaps you may be interested in learning why it’s a wise decision. Whether you want to improve the look of your home for your own comfort or to add value towards selling it, a designer can really make a difference. If you’re not sure when and how to start decorating your home or if you simply don’t have time to rethink the layout of your rooms, some design and high-end furniture stores  offer interior design services. A decorator will help you set up a space that fits your taste, according to your budget. Creating your dream house may be easier than you thought! 5 Good Reasons to Hire an Interior Designer

  1. You will save money

It might surprise you. While hiring someone causes additional costs, hiring an interior designer can also spare you from a lot of costly mistakes. You won’t just save money, you’ll also increase the value of your home. If you’re ever taking steps towards selling your home, effective decoration can help attract buyers and place your home above the competition.

  1. No more puzzles

In addition to saving you time and effort, an interior designer will also make sure you don’t exceed your initial budget. He or she will know where to find the best resources, which ones are best suited depending on your situation and which will best meet your needs. You will also save some time finding products and shopping for brands and prices. No need to puzzle over it, someone takes care of everything for you!

  1. A professional evaluation

An interior designer will provide you with a professional assessment of your situation and put a detailed action plan in place. An organized design plan is essential to determine what can be reused and what needs to be completely changed. This will not only have a positive effect on your budget, but it will help you manage it more effectively. A designer is an extra pair of eyes, but not just any kind of eyes. He or she will notice every little detail you personally don’t see.

  1. A sharp eye

Homeowners often try to do everything by themselves and, without the skills of a designer, they can quickly become overwhelmed. A designer is a sharp-eyed professional who can quickly tell you what’s wrong with your decor. Hiring an interior designer is a major advantage when the time comes to make aesthetic decisions.

Machine De Cirque – Ottawa Children’s Festival REVIEW

2

The Ottawa Children’s Festival is an event Ottawa families wait all year for and in it’s 33rd year, this year was no different; except that this year I was offered an opportunity to see a performance I may not have otherwise seen – and it was exceptional! I was asked by Ottawa Mommy Club to attend a performance put on by Machine de Cirque – a group of five guys from Quebec who mix acrobatics, theatrics, and comedy to put on a show suitable for every age – and did they ever!

Full of family-geared activities with photo booths, food trucks, hands-on exhibits and so much more, one of the best parts of the Children’s Festival is that it “promot[es] the arts as an integral part of children’s education; strives to present work that excites and challenges audiences of all ages; and prides itself on developing and producing award winning programming that comes from across Canada and around the world (OFC website).” Having never actually attended before, the principle behind this festival intrigued me as someone who has an invested interest in the arts.

Looking through the show lineups (which you can see here), the Machine De Cirque isn’t something I would have thought my son, or even myself, would enjoy which is why I really love doing these reviews – I am given an opportunity to do something I may not otherwise have done!

Machine de Cirque, Ottawa Children's Festival, Ottawa Mommy Club, The Pensive Mama
Machine de Cirque – Water Break.

According to the website for Machine De Cirque, the idea behind the show is 5 guys who are stranded post-apocalypse and have to find different ways to survive. But it’s so much more than that. It’s 5 seemingly socially-awkward guys who have talents beyond what any human should have. The show transitions between astounding to creepy to strange to completely random to marvelously hilarious. Although the guys rarely speak at all, their facial expressions, perfectly timed reactions and body language let the audience know exactly what they’re thinking at any given time. It’s obvious that these guys are very good friends outside of the show as it comes out very often throughout – especially when one of them makes a small mistake and it takes everything in them not to crack up.

Additionally, their silly sounds and antics, as well as their crazy circus tricks make this show enjoyable and intriguing for the children while the adult-appropriate jokes sneacked in make the moms and dads howl with laughter…and then…there’s the towel scene. The moms will appreciate this one!

Machine De Cirque – Ottawa Children’s Festival

Here are some of the highlights from this incredible show:

  • The guys make the acrobatic moves look easy and effortless, as if they’re floating on air:
  • The awkward first date was totally random compared to the acrobatics and circus tricks, but it was super sweet and very funny. He made a whole spectacle of it but didn’t speak once. He went through the entire audience and picked some random volunteer about 2 rows in front of us and brought her down on stage. The rest of the guys acted as props  while they went out to dinner, had some wine, went to a movie, went on a motorcycle ride and then to a club it was all very cute.
  • Everything they did was a production – from wardrobe change to a water break – it was all part of the show:
  • The old-school-turned-modern circus tricks kept the kids on the edge of their seats:
  • And then it started to “rain”…and the clothes started coming off…
  • I was completely astounded that they were doing this on stage with small children and I remember saying, “Oh, this is inappropriate” and, “Oh, this is a risky little game.” But it was so impressive and hilarious that I couldn’t be bothered with being indignant – it was just too funny. My son was laughing so hard that he actually grabbed onto me  while he was laughing as if he couldn’t even handle it.

All in all, the show was great. It was a modern twist on the traditional circus performance with some sweet elements and perfectly-timed hilarity. I would definitely go see this again in the future and would recommend for anyone I know to bring their children (and wives) to see this show. You can get more information about Machine de Cirque here.

In additional to this amazing show, there are a few others that may be of interest to you while the Ottawa Children’s Festival is in full swing, including Fred Penner (who I am hoping to go see on Sunday!)

The Ottawa Children’s festival takes place from May 11 to 15th at Lebreton Flats and is chalk full of entertainment and activities to keep you and your family busy all day. Plus, don’t miss The Mobile Archery Booth and The Mad Hatter Tea Party!

Check out the OCF’s website for more information on available shows and activities. You definitely don’t want to miss out on this!

10 Homemade Gifts for Grandma on Mother’s Day

Mother’s Day is just around the corner, and it’s a perfect time to think about what might make great gifts for grandma. Nothing could be sweeter than a little do-it-yourself present from the grandkids that shows how much they care. Here are ten fun and easy ideas you can propose to the kids to spark their imaginations and get crafting.

10 Homemade Gifts for Grandma on Mother’s Day
Reading a book with grand-daughter

For the book lovers

If grandma is a voracious reader, a nice homemade bookmark might be just the thing. It can be as simple as painting a popsicle stick in fun colours and patterns, or as elaborate as a hand-sewn embroidered ribbon. Either way, the kids can customize as much as they want, and grandma will end up with a personalized and practical gift that she can put to use every day.

For the florists

If gardening is grandma’s favourite hobby, a painted flower pot could make the perfect gift. Acrylic paint will do the job nicely, and of course the design possibilities are limitless. Terracotta pots are best for this activity. Level up the gift by planting an actual flower in it. Bonus points if it’s grandmas’ favourite!

For the home spa lovers

Teacup candles are a beautiful gift for grandmas who are into some serious rest and relaxation. Instead of spending thirty dollars on a single candle from a shop, the diy-route is perfect for families with teens who are good with the stove. Take the kids out to a second-hand store to pick up a few teacups that grandma might enjoy, and then hit up the craft store for all your candle-making needs.

For the home chefs

For those of you who’ve got really young kids at home, some cute pot holders decorated with handprints and footprints can make for a lovely, practical gift that grandmas who love to cook can cherish for years to come. Pick up some fabric potholders from the dollar store (you might want to grab a couple extra in case you make mistakes) as well as some fabric paint. Just make sure to pay attention to how much paint you’re using, and make sure that if the potholder has a hanging loop so that you don’t accidentally paint the underside!

For the sports fans

If grandma’s idea of a good time means an evening with her favourite team, she might love a homemade tote bag with her favourite player’s name and jersey number on it or the team’s logo. There are also a lot of different ways to create tote bags, whether you for spray dyes, stamps or paint, so the customization options are endless.

For musicians

Old vinyl records make for great art projects. With just a little bit of heat and a little bit creativity, old scratched up records can be turned into anything from a fruit bowl to a side table. Given that you’ll need an oven, some heatproof mitts and a set of steady hands, save the vinyl-upcycling project for the trustworthy teens in your house.

For tea enthusiasts

Tea has become a lot more popular in recent years, and some restaurants are even starting to offer fancy high tea to meet the demand for such old-fashioned fun. Call up the family and throw grandma an old-fashioned tea party if she’s into the idea of dressing up and nibbling on fancy cakes and savoury treats. The kids can help bake goodies beforehand –the classic Victorian sponge cake is always a great option, full of yummy jam and cream – but of course, there’s no end to the number of simple but delicious options out there.

For the artists

If grandma has an appreciation for art, get the kids to collaborate on a good sized canvas, which you can grab at any half decent craft store. Even little kids can end up making some awesome art worth hanging, using any number of creative techniques like air blow painting with a straw, or making a beautiful marbled effect with some shaving cream and food colouring.

For the jewellery admirers

These days, you can pick up any beautiful chains and jewels from even non-specialty craft stores to make jewelry-loving grandmas a gift truly worth wearing. Skip the macaroni and paints – there are way too many simple tutorials online that easily guide the reader through making real eye candy. Even the clumsiest of little fingers should be fine with at least stringing on a couple charms onto a sterling-silver chain, and any self-respecting girl scout probably already has experience with a friendship bracelet or two!

For the movie buffs

Movie theatres are expensive these days, so why not get the whole family together and bring the theatre experience to grandma’s house. Pick out some yummy treats, just like you might find in the theatre, and pack them into a big jar. Don’t forget the popcorn! Having the kids draw up some homemade tickets to hand out to the family in exchange for nickels and dimes is a good way to add some extra fun to the activity.

Putting together a brunch is a great way for you and your mom to be get together for at least a few hours!

Choosing a colour scheme is a great way to start planning any party. A great colour scheme would be to combine your and your mother’s favourite colours. If you’re not set on that, a spring colour scheme would also be perfect. You could add a number of fresh flowers to make the area beautiful.

Creating a Mother’s Day Brunch at Home

You can create some gorgeous pieces for your brunch tablescape by using inexpensive finds. For example, you can take a candlestick holder and glue a plate onto it before spray painting in gold, rose gold, or silver. Keep The Brunch Menu Simple

Your menu shouldn’t be complicated. After all, you’re a mother, too. You don’t want to spend the entire morning cooking. Instead, you could purchase a selection of pastries from a local bakery, fry up some bacon, and scramble some eggs to be served along side fresh fruit and mimosas or freshly squeezed orange juice. You may even want to see if local restaurants can cater the brunch.

Head Outdoors To Eat Brunch

If the weather is willing, set up your brunch outdoors. Spring is a wonderful time to eat outdoors. The weather is usually not too hot or too cold. Best of all, the bugs haven’t started to take over everything just yet. This means you can enjoy your meal without the heat or the creepy crawlies.

I’ve included the template so that you can easily get started. This craft is so easy to do and has such great results. You’ll be making these for everyone and attaching them to packages, cards, and more. Imagine the 3D cards you could make with these. They are also ideal to give at Mother’s Day!

Paper Rose Craft Tutorial step (1)

Step (1)

Cut 4 pieces of the same coloured craft paper into a square, all 4 cut-outs should be of the same size. Mine was cut into 4 x 4 inches. Take any one of the square papers and use a pencil to trace the 6 petale pattern from the template on it.

Craft Tutorial step 2
Paper Rose Craft Tutorial step (2)

Step (2)

Simply cut out the traced pattern. Similarly cut 3 more patterns.

Craft Tutorial step 3
Paper Rose Craft Tutorial Step 3

Step (3)

This step is really important, cut the 6 petal pieces into 2 parts but each piece should be cut differently. Cut out 1 petal from any two of the 6 petal pieces. Cut out 2 petals from the third pattern and cut the last pattern into half (3 and 3). So, now let’s check, we have 5-1, 5-1, 4-2 and 3-3 petal patterns.

Craft Tutorial step 4
Paper Rose Craft Tutorial step 4

Step (4)

In this step we’ll have to cut the 2 petal pattern and any one of the 3 petal patterns slightly from their outer edges to make them a bit smaller.

Craft Tutorial step 5

Step (5)

Use a small round object to create curves on the sides of the cut-out petal patterns. Try to keep the curves neat.

Step (6)

Time to glue the sides of all the patterns and give them a 3 dimensional look! Simply, Apply glue on one side of the petal patterns and join it with the other side. Join the sides of each pattern one by one.

Paper Rose Craft Tutorial
Paper Rose Craft Tutorial Step 7

Step (7)

Now we have – 2 pieces with 5 petals, 1 with 4 petals, 2 with 3 petals, 1 with 2 petals and 2 with 1 petal. Check and make sure they’re all there!

Paper Rose Craft Tutorial
Paper Rose Craft Tutorial Step 8

Step (8)

Start to join the patterns by gluing one on the top of another one. Try to arrange them nice and neatly to create a beautiful, blooming pattern. The ones with more petals should be on the bottom and the ones with fewer petals should be on the top. Follow this from the bottom – 5-5-4-3-3 small-2-1-1.

How to Save on a Disney Vacation

12

Whether it’s your first time to Walt Disney World, or if you’ve been before, you likely already know that it can be costly. That said, there are many great tips and tricks out there to help you save more money on your Disney vacation. This is what makes it possible for couples, families, and friends to attend the Disney parks and enjoy all that they have to offer. Lets look at how to save on a Disney vacation!

Disney has to be the ultimate vacation destination for families. There’s so much to see and do. Not to mention that it’s every child’s dream come true. What may not be a dream come true is the cost. A Disney vacation can be quite expensive, but there are ways to save money – some that may shock you.

How to Save Even More on a Disney Vacation
How to Save Even More on a Disney Vacation

How to save on a Disney vacation

You may already know about how you can use certain credit cards to earn reward points that you can use towards plane tickets for Disney vacation trip, but what are some other ways you can save even more?

1. Consider A Disney All-Inclusive Vacation

It may seem counterintuitive to plan a vacation where you’ll be staying and eating all your meals at the Disney parks. However, it’s actually much more affordable. Disney has packages to meet almost any budget. The best part is you don’t have to worry about driving to and from the parks, you can stay in the parks later, you don’t have to worry about food costs, etc. There are so many additional benefits to the these packages that you can check out on Disney’s site.

Planning a Disney World trip on a budget

If you don’t want to go with a vacation package, no worries. Sit down and create an overall budget. What is the max you want to spend on your vacation? Next, break down the total into subcategories. How much do you want to spend on travel, a hotel, food, souvenirs, etc. Make sure you have all your bases covered and over-estimate what you’ll spend. This way, there’s no surprises.

Set a Date

It’s one thing to plan a vacation and it’s another to actual go. Set a date for your vacation and book it. This forces you to lock in your plans and ensures that you’ll actually be able to get in the park once you’re ready.

2. How much should i save for a trip to disney world

Look at your budget and date and determine how may pay periods until the big day. For example, if you’re going in a year, and get paid every other week, you’ll have roughly 26 weeks to save up. Each week, you would need to save 1/26th of your total budget. If you can, always put in more than that just in case you have a week where you can’t put in the full amount.

3. Plan for Small Expenses

You want to have a plan so that you spend your money wisely. For example, on the drive to Disney, fill your car with snacks and drinks before leaving. This will prevent the need to spend money in convenience stores. Also, research options for buying souvenirs. Disney Outlets, Targets and other stores are some of the best places to find Disney merchandise for a great price. Don’t spend more than you have to.

4. Go in the off season

There’s no real “off season” for Disney, since everyone loves it, but there are certain times of year that people visit more frequently than others. For example, summer is popular because the weather is nice and students are out of school for summer vacation. That said, the Disney parks are located in warm climates and you can choose a less popular time of year to visit and save some. Remember this tip to save even more on a Disney vacation!

5. Shop Costco for savings

Costco sometimes has some great travel tickets and fun passes like the CityPass on discount. Check it out to see how much you can save.

6. How to save at disney world

Disney is a great vacation destination, but you need to be smart about your finances. While you may be tempted to stay outside the resort, you can actually save money staying at a Disney resort. Do your homework, compare your options, and go with what works best for your family and budget.

Order groceries in

Did you know that you can have groceries delivered to your Disney hotel and prepare meals in your room to save on the costs of eating out in the park? Even with the delivery fees, you’re going to save a ton. A soda can cost as much as $4 inside the park and trying to feed a family multiple meals a day is really going to add up.

Kids under three get in free at Disney

Nothing more to add. If you have little kids, you can save more on admission.

How to Save Even More on a Disney Vacation

Do your Disney character meals at breakfast instead of dinner

If you’re planning a character meal, you can save much more by choosing breakfast instead of dinner.

Don’t buy bottled water

You can get free water at the counter-service restaurants in the park.

Now that you have these tips on how to save on a Disney vacation, you’re ready to start planning your next Disney trip today. Have a magical stay!

Fun Ways for New Moms to Spend Mother’s Day

63

Many new moms often wonder how they should spend their day. They’ve spent time with their own mothers, but being on the other side of things can be quite different! Should you spend the day pampering yourself or spend the day with your family? Let’s take a closer look at fun ways for new moms to spend Mother’s Day!

Fun Ways for New Moms to Spend Mother’s Day

Fun Ways for New Moms to Spend Mother’s Day

Spa Day

Let’s face it: you probably haven’t had anytime to yourself! New moms spend every waking hour taking care of their newborn. Even sleep has become a luxury. That’s why a day at the spa is so desperately needed! Your husband or significant other can handle the fort for a few hours while you spend some time relaxing. Most spas will allow you to enjoy the facility for as long as you like after your treatments. If you have the budget to do so, go all out with a full-body massage and facial. You can then spend a few hours relaxing by the pool or enjoying the sauna. Have a lunch at the spa, if offered, or at your favourite restaurant before heading home or out for some retail therapy.

You can also create your own amazing spa day at home with DIY homemade recipes that you can find on our blog including Lavender soaps, bath salts, bath bombs, and so much more! Simply have your spouse take care of the baby for a few hours while you relax in the tub or the bedroom!

Plant Some Perennials

Another great way to spend the day is to get in the garden and plant some perennials. These flowers will come back year after year, reminding you of your very first Mother’s Day. If you want, you could then take some pictures of your baby in the garden with the flowers.

Head to the Movies

Again, you need to spend some time on yourself! If you’re not into being pampered, why not go to the movies? Go and see something that you want to see! It may be a chick-flick or the latest Disney movie. Today is all about you! Don’t skimp on the large popcorn with extra butter, a couple boxes of candy, and a large drink. It’s your day!

Fun Ways for New Moms to Spend Mother’s Day

Spend the Day in Bed

If you have a newborn, don’t force yourself to get out of the house. If you want to spend the entire day in bed, while your husband takes care of things, do it! Turn on Netflix and binge on your favourite series. Order a pizza for dinner and then end the day with a hot bath. Sometimes, all a woman needs is a day to stay in her pajamas and relax.

Mix It Up

Last, but not least, shake things up a bit! Spend some time with your baby and spouse during the early part of the day, do something for yourself that afternoon, and then end the evening with a date with your spouse. That way your day is about you and your family, you, and then you and your spouse. It captures many of the important parts of your life.

Above all, do what makes you feel comfortable on Mother’s Day. Some new moms want to spend the day with their newborn, while others want time to relax and be pampered. Whatever your choice, embrace it! You should never feel guilty for doing what makes you comfortable!

Springing into Healthy Habits For Moms!

9

With the sun finally making its overdue appearance and the frigid cold temperatures behind us, it’s safe to say that Spring is finally here! It’s the perfect opportunity to start springing into healthy habits to incorporate in your daily self-care routine. There’s no need for it to be January to consider improving your health! Change can happen any day, and it starts with you!

Springing into Healthy Habits!

Springing into Healthy Habits!
Woman in white dress standing outside barefoot in a garden filled with tulips, holding a bag containing flowers.

Here are a few personal healthy habits I plan on keeping up with this spring that you can also consider:

1. Take time to meditate!

  • As daunting a task as it might seem, it truly only does take a few minutes a day to practice meditation and focus your mind, so long as you make the time for it and don’t procrastinate! I’ve personally been researching into meditation myself as of late, and I’ve learned that it’s as simple as sitting down anywhere (no need for fancy cushions!), focusing on your breathing, and letting go of the crazy world we live in. It might seem impossible at first, but this is why there are many kinds of meditation and apps you can use to get started! Meditation can help centre you before the day begins, or after a long day. If you’re motivated, don’t give up and keep at it!

2. It’s not summer, but there’s still sun!

  • We often think of sunscreen on hot summer days before we hit the beach or pool, but we don’t consider it enough year-round! We sometimes shy away from applying sunscreen daily because it can take long to absorb, or leaves an unwanted residue. That’s why Coppertone® has developed ClearlySheer Whipped and WaterBabies Whipped. Both absorb quickly, leave skin hydrated, smooth, and soft, and provide SPF 50 protection from UVA/UVB rays so you and your family can stay protected all year round.
Springing into Healthy Habits!

3. Take advantage of the outdoors!

  • As it gets nicer outside, it tends to become easier to keep (or restart) your New Year’s resolution to be more active. Working out does not always have to be in a gym or be strenuous activity. Walk around your neighbourhood, catch the blooming cherry blossoms or go on a hike.

4. Pay attention to your body!

  • Life is so hectic, and we often ignore obvious symptoms of our body telling us something is off. Many ailments can be treated early and at home so when your body is trying to tell you something, listen up! A common example for women is Bacterial Vaginosis (BV). BV affects so many women, but it’s easy to ignore symptoms like abnormal discharge or an unpleasant odour when life gets busy. CanesBalance® is an easy and effective at-home treatment that can relieve unwanted symptoms and prevent future recurrences.
Springing into Healthy Habits!

5. Take time out of your busy schedule to enjoy the hobbies you enjoy doing most!

  • Taking time for yourself can seem impossible when there’s just so much that needs doing! Chores, errands, spring cleaning, spring shopping, and the list never really ends! As hectic as life can get, make sure to take some time for yourself in there too! If you love painting, set yourself a weekly time slot to paint with no interruptions! The same can apply for any hobby, such as reading, taking a treat-yourself bath, taking care of your feet like getting a pedicure, going to the spa, going to the movies, and so on. Taking time to focus on yourself will ensure that, in turn, you feel relaxed and refreshed to take on anything!

Avengers Captain America Oreo Cookies Recipe

23

Superheroes a huge hit among kids. There seems to be a new superhero movie every time you turn around. If you have little ones, chances are you’ve had, or been to, at least one superhero-themed party. While you can find lots of decorations for your party almost everywhere, and even a superhero cake in most bakeries, why not take things a bit further? If your child loves The Avengers, or just Captain America, these Avengers Captain America Oreo Cookies are a must for his birthday party.

Avengers Captain America Oreo Cookies Recipe

These cookies are so much fun and look just like Captain America’s shield when you’re done. Your child will love helping you make these and will also love eating them. Of course, a birthday party isn’t the only occasion to serve them. You could also have a release party when the Avengers Infinity War movie comes out on Friday April 27th, 2018 or when the next movie featuring the character comes out.

How to make Avengers Captain America Oreo Cookies

These cookies are so easy to make. They will take a bit of time, but you and your child will have a blast. Best of all, you can recreate this method using different colours to make logos for all The Avengers. You’re only limited by your creativity.

If you’re really short on time, you can dip your Oreos in coloured chocolate and then use edible logos found at your local craft store to turn them into superhero Oreos. Either way, these are going to taste fabulous.

For a cute party favour, put a few of these Oreos in a treat bag and tie it up with red, white, and blue ribbon. This would also be a great way to sell these at a bake sale. Another great use is to place these around the edge of a vanilla frosted cake to turn it into a Captain America cake.

Here’s What Parents with Little Computer Knowledge Should Do if it Crashes

If you’re a parent with little to no computer knowledge and your child has encountered crash issues with their computer, it could be time to get involved and get their computer working again. Trying to fix crash errors is a daunting process, especially for inexperienced users. However, there is plenty of help available online and just by chance, one of the following solutions could be exactly what you need to fix the computer yourself.

Here’s What Parents with Little Computer Knowledge Should Do if it Crashes

Check Your Cable Connections

One common fault of computer crashes is simply that a cable has been loosened. Turn off your computer and check for any loose cables. Don’t just look at the cables, always make sure you’ve put in the effort to check them physically. Some cables look like they are in properly but can always be pushed in further. This is a simple fix, but you’ll be surprised by how often it happens.

Back Up if Possible

When your computer crashes, it’s not always possible to access your data again. However, if you’ve managed to fix the issue thanks to one of the above methods, you should look to back up any data you want to keep straight away. There’s nothing to suggest the problem your computer is facing isn’t going to come back in the near future. Therefore, you should back up your data in case your computer crashes and isn’t fixable next time.

Here’s What Parents with Little Computer Knowledge Should Do if it Crashes

Take Note of Crash Errors

Taking note of crash errors will help you find a solution with ease. Once you have taken a note of the crash error, use another device that has internet access and type the crash error in Google, along with the model of your computer. More often than not thousands of other people have had the same problems and get help easily from professionals in Google. If you can’t find your error code, look for computer-related forums and ask someone if they have any idea what’s causing the problem. You could also look at Secure Data for a solution if you’ve haven’t been successful in your search.

Hire a Computer Tech Expert

Hiring a computer tech expert isn’t cheap, but if your computer is new and expensive it’s an effective way to fix it to normal standing again. A professional will fix any and all errors and replace any components if they aren’t doing their job any longer. It’s also a good way if you have absolutely no experience working with computers yourself.

Start the Recovery Process

Many of the latest computers have a recovery procedure that can be initiated from safe mode. Look at your computer manual to see how to boot in safe mode and then follow the recovery options stated. Bear in mind that you will likely lose all your data if you are restoring to a factory state. However, your crash problem will likely be software related and that means it will be gone once you start your computer again after the recovery process.

The above are just some of the simple solutions available if you’re looking to solve a crash issue. If you have no luck using the above methods, it could be worth contacting the computer manufacturer to see if you still have warranty left – more often than not they’ll repair the computer for you so that you don’t have to.

Nutrition On The Go With Nutribar Meal Replacement Bars

Nutrition On The Go With Nutribar Meal Replacement Bars

The first time I ate a Nutribar was when I was a sales representative travelling across Eastern and Central Ontario. I was on the road driving for long hours or visiting clients. My eating schedule was all out of whack and I found myself eating on the go and grabbing junk food. I also started gaining weight because I was sitting in my car for such a prolonged time and too tired in the evening to do much. My energy level was low and I felt sleepy during the day. I decided to change my eating habits and look for meal replacement bars that I could eat on the road.

While shopping at a drug store, I came across Nutribar and decided to try them. The bars were rich in flavours and tasty, and they also kept my hunger away for hours. Even today, I try my best to eat healthy most of the time, but with my hectic lifestyle and family schedule, I don’t always have time to prepare a healthy meal. I find that Nutribar has all the nutrients I need in a meal when I am on the go. I don’t feel sluggish anymore and I keep the pounds off!

Nutribar Difference

Not all nutrition bars are created equal. “We all know that keeping up a healthy lifestyle in today’s 24-7 world isn’t easy and it’s even more challenging when it comes to maintaining or losing weight,” said Brenda Embree, Nutribar Brand Manager. “No one can deny that eating a healthy, balanced diet of whole foods is optimal, but who has the time to consistently prepare proper meals three times a day, every day?” That’s where Nutribar meal replacement bars come in. As opposed to protein bars that are intended as a snack to manage hunger between meals and may not have an optimal nutritional breakdown, Nutribar meal replacement bars provide “Nutrition on the Go”.  The bars deliver all the essential vitamins and minerals, protein, carbs and fat found in a completely balanced whole foods meal without the required time and energy to prepare it.”

Also unlike protein bars, Nutribar meal replacement bars are regulated under Canadian government guidelines and approved by Health Canada. What’s more, clinical studies show that Nutribar meal replacement bars satisfy hunger and cravings for up to five hours, eliminating the desire to snack between meals.

According to Embree, replacing one meal a day with a Nutribar meal replacement bar not only saves time, but also helps maintain a healthy weight. Replacing two meals a day with a Nutribar meal bar has been clinically shown to lead to weight loss of up to eight pounds over six weeks. “Complete Nutribar meal replacement bars with nutritious eating the rest of the day as well as a regular exercise plan, and you’ve got yourself an optimal healthy lifestyle that fits into a busy schedule,” she said.

Nutribar Format and Flavours

Nutribar meal replacement bars are available in two formats: Original and High Protein for those with a more active lifestyle. Original flavours include Belgian ChocolateChocolate FudgeChocolate Peanut ButterCreamy CaramelDeep Brownie DelightHazelnut VanillaMocha Almond and Oatmeal Raisin. High Protein flavours include Caramel Nougat Chocolate TemptationChocolate TruffleDouble ChocolateMilk Chocolate Peanut, and Peanut Delight.

Retail price is approximately $3 per bar. For a list of retailers, visit www.nutribar.com. 14 Must Make Minnie Mouse Craft Projects

9

Minnie is often the subject of a wide range of craft projects. I’ve put together a list of 14 must-make Minnie Mouse projects for all ages. So, the next time you’re in the mood to make something fun, I hope at least a couple of these possibilities appeal to you.

Many of these ideas would make great gifts. There are scores of people who collect Minnie memorabilia. If you happen to know one of them, he or she will no doubt appreciate the gesture… not to mention the new “mouse swag.”

Minnie Mouse

Loved by millions, Minnie Mouse came to life in 1928 thanks to artist Ub Iwerks and Walter Disney. You may be surprised to learn that Minnie’s given name is actually Minerva, which some people think is more glamorous and suits her better. As the story goes, Minnie comes from a family of farmers. Her parents, grandparents and uncle all worked the land. She has twin nieces, Melody and Millie. And, let’s not forget her faithful boyfriend Mickey and BFF Daisy Duck.

Minnie Mouse will live forever, along with Mickey and the gang. She’s starred in countless cartoons and movies, throughout the years, with the help of several voice actors. You might be surprised to learn that Minnie “borrowed” her first voice from Walt Disney himself. Pretty cool, don’t you think?

14 Must Make Minnie Mouse Crafts

Are you planning a future trip to Walt Disney World? If so, some of these Minnie crafts are great to make with the kids to take with you. It’s a much less expensive way to show your love for Minnie without purchasing costly souvenirs for the kids.

The list of Minnie Mouse crafts includes, but is not limited to, a trick-or-treat bag, Minnie hair clips and bows, easy T-shirts, picture frames, a mug, a no-sew costume and even a topiary and makeover for Minnie’s Cozy Coupe.

5 Reasons to Eat Dinner as a Family

10

Remember when everyone gathered around the table to have dinner each evening? It almost seems to be a thing of the past. Between practice, working overtime, and other activities that affect our family, families rarely sit down to have dinner together. That’s a shame because it can have such a negative impact on our children. Let’s take a closer look at reasons to eat dinner as a family.

5 Reasons to Eat Dinner as a Family

Kids Will Get Better Grades

It’s been proven that kids who eat dinner with their parents are more likely to do better in school. If your kids are having trouble in school, it may be because you’re not eating dinner together. When you eat together as a family, you’re more involved with your children’s lives. You’ll know if they’re having trouble with schoolwork and can step in to help.

Curbs Bad Behaviours

Kids who eat dinner with their family most nights are less likely to be troublemakers. This may be due to the fact that kids are getting the attention they want from their parents and don’t have to act out. Another reason may be that kids have more access to their parents and feel more comfortable asking their parents about risky behaviours.

Access to Healthier Meals

When you eat together as a family, there’s a much better chance that your children will be eating healthier meals. You’ll make more of an effort to have balanced meals on the table. When your kids just grab what’s available in the freezer or fridge, they’re usually eating a lot of processed food. If you want your kids to eat healthier, eat together as a family.

It’s a Way to Connect

Does it feel like your children are growing away from you? Family dinners are a way to connect with your children. You can talk to them about what’s bothering them, the good things in their life, etc. In other words, you’ll be more aware of what’s going on in your kids’ lives.

Better Health

Last, but not least, kids who eat dinner with their family are usually healthier. Not only are they eating healthier meals, but kids who eat with their family as usually less stressed. Stress can lead to a weaker immune system which can lead to colds, the flu, and even asthma. Children who eat with their family are also less likely to be overweight or obese. This is because portion control comes into play. When your kids are left to fend for themselves, they are more likely to overeat high-fat foods.

It takes time and effort to eat together as a family, but you have to ask yourself, “What are the rewards?” If you want your children to do better in school, be good kids, and be healthier, you need to eat together. You’ll also have a better idea of what’s going on in your kids’ lives and be able to fix any problems before they get too far out of hand. Even if it means eating later in the day, make an effort to eat together as a family as often as possible.
