Spring Cleaning

Spring Cleaning

‘Tis the time of year for spring cleaning. Given the nature of my business, it is certainly on my mind, no matter what the weather is doing.

There is just something about this time of year which inspires a sense of renewal and an urge to clear away dirt and mess. There is the unpleasantness of what is revealed as the snow retreats – flotsam of what tumbled out of cars and garbage bins during the winter, and all that neglected dog poop. There is also the excitement of looking for signs of the bulbs planted back in the fall. There is the lightness that comes from ditching heavy coats. There is the sound of birds returning.

All of this gets us itching to sweep and clean and tidy. I see spring cleaning as more than just for your house or car or garage. It is also a time to tidy up your life. It is an opportunity to clear out clutter which may be holding you back. Here are a few spring cleaning tasks to consider:

1. Food

In January, did you promise yourself to stick to some sort of strict diet regime? If you have made positive changes with your nutrition choices, now celebrate that you’ve stuck with it for 3 months! However, if you’ve been stuck on rules and restrictions which are getting in the way of enjoying life, perhaps now is the time to make a change. Unless there are medical reasons for the rules you are struggling to follow, consider letting it go.

2. Time

How are you spending your time, really? We are 25% through 2015. If this was the year you were finally going to learn how to paint, or get back into yoga, spring is the perfect time to start with it. If you can’t fit in the hobbies you want because you are on 4 school committees and coach 3 teams for your kids, consider cutting back a little. It is ok to say no sometimes. Make time for you.

3. People

Thanks to social media, we are connected to more people than ever before. This is a wonderful thing, but there is a downside. If there are people in your feed who are routinely negative and making you feel bad for any reason, spring is a good time to sweep them from your stream. Look at all the people in your networks and think about who you want to unfollow, and also who you want to make time to see. Removing 1 negative person from your feed and reaching out to 3 friends you haven’t seen for awhile is the kind of spring cleaning you can really feel good about.

Do you have any spring cleaning rituals which make your life better?
