Indulge In These Top Five Skin Care Products From Clayton Shagal

Has the pandemic taken a beating on your skin? If you’re like most Canadians, the winter cold, combined with stress and spending more time in the heated indoors amid lockdowns, has taken its toll.

The good news? It’s never too late to start giving your skin some TLC. Consider treating yourself to a daily self-care routine and you’ll find that not only will your skin feel pampered, but your mind will too!

Here are five must-have skin care products from Clayton Shagal:

Hydra Derm Cream from Clayton Shagal

1. Hydra Derm Cream

To ensure your skin remains healthy and nourished throughout the day, it’s best to hydrate your face with a rich moisturizer twice a day – in the morning and before bedtime. Clayton Shagal’s light moisturizing Hydra Derm Cream is designed to promote youthful skin. It strengthens and revitalizes the skin by creating a barrier that protects it from harmful environmental factors, free radicals, photoaging and oxidative stress. Thanks to its ability to retain water and prevent dehydration, it also prevents signs of premature skin aging and restores balance, suppleness and elasticity to the skin.

Collagen Gel by Clayton Shagal

2. Collagen Gel

Did you know there’s a way to get the benefits of collagen without injection? Clayton Shagal is the only skin care company to offer an exclusive Collagen Gel (and Collagen Gel Plus for those over 35), uniquely made of 99% pure non-hydrolyzed acid-soluble collagen – the purest form of collagen ever extracted. The gel penetrates through your skin all the way to the dermis without any need for injections. Just dab it on and you’ll find it regenerates, hydrates and nourishes your skin, reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, accelerates skin recovery after burns, injuries, scars and procedures, soothes and reduces irritation, inflammation and redness, and tones and restores your skin’s vitality. Tested under close supervision of qualified dermatologists, the unique gel is filled with essential nutrients and proven to deliver a more radiant and youthful look, naturally.

Hyaluronic Acid Serum by Clayton Shagal

3. Hyaluronic Acid Serum

An essential compliment to the collagen gel is Clayton Shagal’s Hyaluronic Acid Serum. A hydrating and anti-aging treatment with 100 per cent pure hyaluronic acids, the product is an ultra-concentrated, intensive moisturizing serum for an immediate plumping, smoothing effect without injections. Not only does the serum prevent premature skin aging and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, but it also accelerates skin recovery, restoring balance, suppleness and elasticity to the skin. What’s more, it will leave you with a natural and glowing complexion.

Cucumber and avocado mask by Clayton Shagal

4. Face Masks

On top of the other moisturizing products, using a hydrating face mask, ideally twice a week, helps the skin retain moisture. Whatever your skin type, the right face mask not only helps keep skin hydrated, but also helps restore its balance and suppleness. Pamper yourself and stimulate your senses with one of Clayton Shagal’s luxurious, spa-like products, such as its Mokaccino Mask or Cucumber and Avocado Mask. Both are rich in vitamins and minerals, leaving your complexion radiant and improving visible signs of premature aging and damage caused by UV rays. The Mokaccino Mask also reduces skin spots and blemishes, as well as dark circles and puffiness around the eyes.

Bamboo and Honey Exfoliant by Clayton Shagal

5. Scrubs

For maximum spa-like results, try exfoliating your skin twice a week, Exfoliating is the process of removing dead skin cells from the surface of your skin, which would otherwise result in dry, flaky patches and clogged pores. Not only can exfoliating improve the appearance of your skin, but it can also give it a glowing appearance, help the absorption of other skin care products and prevent fewer breakouts.

If your skin is oily or sensitive, try Clayton Shagal’s Oat Bran Scrub, which gently and effectively exfoliates for smooth, radiant skin, while soothing and reducing skin irritation, inflammation and redness. Another option is the brand’s lightly-fragranced creamy Bamboo and Honey Exfoliant with a grainy texture, which deeply cleanses and is proven to revive, soften and brighten both normal and dry skin.

Used in combination, these Clayton Shagal products will yield the best results and enable you to create an ideal spa getaway experience. Still, you will begin seeing results even if you start with any one of these options. Most importantly, whichever skin care products you choose, it’s important to keep up your skin care routine for maximum benefit – no matter what the season.

Clayton Shagal products are available online, at salons and spas across North America. You can also follow Clayton Shagal on Facebook and Instragram.

Pot of Gold Paper Craft For Kids on St. Patrick’s Day

12

For children, this pot of gold paper craft helps celebrate the fantastical elements of St. Patrick’s Day!

Pot of Gold Paper Craft For Kids on St. Patrick's Day

St. Patrick’s Day. You may know it as that awkward pinching holiday. Or you may recall its convenient position right in the middle of Lent. You may even squabble about whether you are supposed to wear green or orange on St. Patrick’s Day. Any or all of these thoughts may run through your mind every March 17th along with visions of Leprechauns, Rainbows, and pots of gold. There is so much folklore and mythology regarding this date nestled among the esoteric lesser holidays between Christmas and Easter. And it’s one that children and adults look forward to albeit for different reasons.

The End of the Rainbow

What child doesn’t love to speculate about that fabled pot of gold at the end of the rainbow? Part of the mystery and magic of rainbows is that you can’t touch them. They are visions only with no substance, thus the elusive pot of gold remains a dream, much like catching a wish-granting leprechaun. Although the pot of gold and the rainbow are totally intangible, this very textural pot of gold paper craft adds touch and feel to one of the greatest holiday legends we love to tell our kids. It’s a lot of fun to make and an excellent way for kids to pass the time while learning about St. Patrick’s Day.

Pot of Gold Paper Craft For Kids on St. Patrick's Day

The Real St. Patrick’s Day

St. Patrick’s Day, like most religious holidays, is actually a feast; and yes, it is conveniently positioned in the midst of the fasting period Lent, which leads up to Easter. Many who practice Lent have a big celebration called Fat Tuesday, which is all about getting “it” out of their system before heading into the somber 40 day stretch toward Easter Sunday. St. Patrick’s Day comes along as a day of remembrance for the patron saint of Ireland. St. Patrick was a slave in Ireland near the end of the Roman Empire at the beginning of the 5th Century. He escaped and later returned to convert the Irish to Christianity

5 Easy Homemade Facial Scrub Recipes For Glowing Skin

4

These are 5 helpful recipes to make the best homemade facial scrubs using home-based ingredients for glowing skin.

Many of us love spending an afternoon at the spa. If you wish to achieve the look and feel of spa skin, but don’t have a spa budget, here are some great tips on how to give yourself a facial at home; and the best part is, almost everything that you will be using can be purchased from your favourite drug store.

5 Homemade Facial Scrub Recipes For A Healthy Radiant Skin

What do you need for a facial at home

  • Gentle Cleanser (Preferably a lotion cleanser)
  • Exfoliant with a homemade facial scrub (Choose one with the smallest grains possible, as smaller grains will not damage the skin by tearing the pores)
  • Clay Mask (optional)
  • Cucumber (Reduces puffiness around eyes)
  • Moisturizer or Night Cream
  • Eye Cream
  • Lip Balm

How to do home facial

  • 1. Start with a refrigerated cucumber. Peel cucumber, then slice off two pieces about ½ inch thick each. Set aside.
  • 2. Cleanse your face and neck. Cleanse for 30 to 60 seconds. Use water that is cool in temperature, as water that is too hot can cause enlarged pores. *On everyday occasions, and especially if you are tired or in a hurry and don’t have a lot of time, always cleanse for at least 20 seconds, never less.
  • 3. Now it is time to exfoliate. Work exfoliator into face and neck, rubbing gently in a circular motion (you can also include your lips). Do this for about 30 seconds, then leave on as per facial scrub instructions or rinse in warm water. Pat face completely dry with a towel.
  • 4. Optional- Apply a clay mask to the face and neck, avoiding the eye area. Depending upon which brand of clay mask you choose, there may be some mixing required.

Time to Relax

Allow the clay to dry on your face for ten to twenty minutes. During the drying process, lie down and apply chilled cucumber slices to your eyes. It is helpful to set a timer during the drying process so that you do not have to remove the cucumbers to peek at the clock. Take slow, deep breaths and relax!

Once your time is up, remove cucumbers from your eyes, and then rinse clay from your face. Use very cold water – as cold as you can withstand! Use a washcloth to gently scrub clay from your face.

Apply Facial Cream

When finished, and while the face is still quite moist, slather a thick layer of moisturizer or night cream over the face and neck area. Gently apply eye cream around the eye area with your ring finger, and then apply your lip balm.

Usually, when applying your night cream, a small to moderate amount is sufficient. However, after cleansing, exfoliating, and masking, your skin will drink in the rich moisturizer and feel absolutely exuberant afterward.

Your face should feel clean, fresh, and revitalized!

How To Secure Your Computer When Working at Home

    1

The work-from-home atmosphere is the new reality for many Ontario working professionals. The change in the office environment means your computer is vulnerable to threats and security risks — risks you’re less likely to experience when working from a secure professional network. Without the company’s IT department available, you may find yourself unsure how best to protect your equipment and secure your computer.

How To Secure Your Computer When Working at Home

Here are a few of our top tips to keep your computer safe and effectively secure your personal information.

    1. Start with a Secure Password

It sounds simple enough, but oftentimes we forget the importance of a simple password on our electronic devices. When your home computer now has important work documents on its server, it’s best to not leave that information open to anyone. Your password should include a mix of characters, numbers, and punctuation without being too complicated that you can’t remember it daily.

    2. Find Your Ideal VPN

For most professionals, the new office dynamics were a last-minute decision — this means you likely don’t have the proper VPN in place. Top VPN services ensure that your internet traffic is sent through a secure channel to a third-party server run by a VPN company.

This privacy tool acts as a barrier between your information and virtual followers tracking your data. While search engines monitor browsing history, the information they collect will come from an IP address that isn’t associated with your home network.

Your browsing habits remain anonymous and the encryption is scrambled, making your data unreadable and allowing you peace of mind as you continue to work on your professional projects. Not only is a technology advanced VPN service good for you, but it can also secure your family’s online privacy.

    3. Explore Email Encryptions

Your email server may not be the most secure portal, and there’s little control over that aspect of communications — however, there are steps you can take to protect your information from as many security risks as possible.

Email encryption is an added feature that can easily be added — if you’re operating through your business server, you may need to seek permission from a supervisor. These apps are designed to shield your virtual communications from outside tampering. This service may cost you upfront, but it will protect you in the long-run.

Antivirus software from a trusted provider takes your PC security to an even higher level, actively scanning incoming emails and their attachments to prevent malware attacks. The best antivirus software will actually scan the behaviour of potential threats rather than simply scanning signatures, which means it can identify threats before they have a permanent effect on your computer or network.

    Secure Video Conferencing Tools

    4. Secure Video Conferencing Tools

In-person meetings and presentations have been swapped out for their virtual counterparts — which means a heavier and more frequent reliance on secure video conferencing. Whether you’re the organizer or a participant, each person involved must be taking the necessary steps to protect all virtual content. There are alternative video conferencing tools available and with enough research, you should be able to find the avenue that works for your team.

    5. Keep Work Documents in the Vault

Sharing reports and professional data from home exposes your computer to harm unless you’re able to take preemptive measures. Your PC or Mac may have malware-protection but you aren’t completely free of potential viruses or hackers. For added protection, keeping your work in an encrypted vault ensures that the shared information is protected when you close the vault — with the ability to move and edit files when they’re inside.

How To Secure Your Computer When Working at Home

These are 5 easy steps you can take to secure your computer while working from home. With the right precautions and tools, you can stay safe from various online threats and protect your data.

Tips To Reduce Conflict Between Parents and Teenagers

    0

It seems inevitable to have frustration and conflict between parents and teenagers. Developmentally, adults and adolescents are at very different places. Parents may find better communication skills and self-monitoring successful strategies to reduce feelings of anger and conflict. You will find below tips to reduce conflict between parents and teenagers.

Tips To Reduce Conflict Between Parents and Teenagers

    Reducing Conflict Begins With Communication

Susan Stern writes in “Anger Management in Parent-Adolescent Conflict” [The American Journal of Family Therapy, 1999] that communication skills are a good place to begin in resolving feelings of parental frustration with teenagers.

    Essential communications skills include:

    1. Taking time to set up a one on one setting with minimum distractions for communication.
    2. Parents need to reflect teenager statements to show understanding such as, “I hear you saying you’re mad about the change in your curfew.”
    3. Use “I” statements when talking about feelings about the conflicting situation.
    4. Parents asking teenagers to repeat the parents statements to show understanding.

Stern takes communication one step further, suggesting frustrated parents engage in conflict resolution efforts. Many parents may not have an understanding of conflict resolution and why it is important to teenagers’ development. The importance is found in the lessons learned by participating in conflict resolution. Teenagers who learn conflict resolution skills early tend to apply them toward life.

Parents may need to take a time out for frustration limits to drop as well. Parents need to model self-care and that includes taking time to allow anger to diffuse before attempting to resolve issues. This will definitely help reduce conflict between parents and teenagers.

    Reducing Frustration With Conflict Resolution

Conflict resolution is a process in which the goal is to have both sides walk away satisfied the issue has been addressed and fairly served. It is the idea of a win-win outcome. And, while the goal is an outcome that pleases both parties, parents need to remember they are the parents and some items are non-negotiable.

To effectively engage in conflict resolution parents and teenagers need to:

    1. Find a quiet place and convenient time for the discussion.
    2. Both parties need to state what they believe the conflict to be.
    3. Once the conflict is identified, the parties generate solutions to the conflict by brainstorming.
    4. The parties each express their preferred outcome respectfully.
    5. The parties each agree to a common solution, both giving up benefits and gaining benefits to meet the goal of resolution.
Tips To Reduce Conflict Between Parents and Teenagers

Frustrated parents of teenagers are often at a loss on how to best proceed. After initiating self-care and taking time to make certain feelings of anger are in check, the next step is communication. When possible, teenagers benefit from experiencing conflict resolution training from their parents; however, when the item of discussion is an absolute, parents must be parents and be the ultimate authority in the family.

Hot Cocoa Bombs are so much fun to make in different flavours and varieties. These Chocolate Fudge Hot Cocoa Bombs with Chocolate Drizzle have a special twist! You guest it, each hot chocolate bomb has a delicious piece of homemade or store bought chocolate fudge.

Chocolate Fudge Hot Cocoa Bombs with Chocolate Drizzle

I love adding ingredients to make the hot chocolate more complex and exciting; however, most of the time, all I really want from my hot chocolate bombs is as much chocolatey goodness as I can get. Rich aromatic chocolate perks up my senses and always satisfies me just the way I’m looking for.

You don’t need all the other bells and whistles as long as you have plenty of chocolate on chocolate, which is exactly what these delicious chocolate fudge hot cocoa bombs are. I still added the mini marshmallows, of course. Partly because it’s just so fun to watch them float to the top. This recipe makes a delicious hot beverage to enjoy year round!

Tips To Make The Hot Cocoa Bombs

Because this hot chocolate bombs recipe thrives on the simple goodness of extra chocolaty fudge, there is so little you have to do to prepare these hot cocoa bombs. You don’t need to round up a lot of ingredients and the materials used to make this treat are relatively small in number. If you don’t have a disposable piping bag for these chocolate fudge hot cocoa bombs, it’s very easy to make one for yourself using a plastic storage bag.

The piping bag is essential to the final look of the chocolate fudge hot cocoa bombs as you will drizzle melted chocolate over the balls and top with mini chocolate chips to leave until they set. This adds so much to the visual appeal of the hot cocoa bombs which are fun to look at and admire when you are not preparing them for a beverage.

    Making the Chocolate Spheres

Make the spheres using silicone molds. Each mold makes hemispheres that you need to adhere to each other. Use caution as you melt the rims of the hemispheres and very carefully remove them from the pan once the edges are just melted.

HOW TO STORE THE HOT COCOA BOMBS

Store your hot cocoa bombs in a plastic container at room temperature for 1 week since it contains a piece of fudge or up to 2 months if filled with only hot cocoa mix.

What Does Cupid Have To Do With Valentine’s Day

    0

Mix one part Venus, the very incarnation of vanity, with one part Mercury, messenger of the Roman Gods, and Cupid is the result. The winged delivery boy of love linked forever with Saint Valentine’s Day. Although depicted as a chubby cheeked cherub wearing nothing but his diaper and quiver of heart tipped arrows, Cupid was, in fact, a Roman God. The very embodiment of all things beautiful and erotic. Let’s found out more on what does Cupid have to do with Valentine’s Day?

    cupid

    Who is Cupid

Cupid, or Eros as he is called in Greek Mythology, was the epitome of sexuality. Our word erotic comes from Eros. Cupid typified sex, lust, and beauty. He portrayed and honored these traits above love, even. Cupid’s quiver carried two vastly different arrows. His golden tipped arrows immersed their victim in lust. His lead tipped arrows cursed their victims with a deep hatred. Legends of Cupid, and his Greek counterpart, are filled with dark erotic interludes. Quite opposite from the flitting baby angel helping people find true love.

    Cupid on valentine’s day

The well-known image of the perpetual child flinging hearts was born out of romantic prose. The idea lingered and became the iconic Valentine’s Day symbol. The putto, or childlike angel, conveys love as innocent and pure. Giving love the personification of a baby allowed the emotion to be celebrated openly. The true Cupid remains a dark shadow of this lighthearted loveable Cupid. An alter ego adopted by the commercial powerhouse behind today’s Valentine’s Day.

    Venus The Goddess

Storytellers describe Cupid as mischievous on his own accord, yet he had Venus, his mother, to thank for that reputation. Cupid spent his life doing his mother’s bidding. The Goddess entertained herself by mismatching lovers at her son’s hand. Then, she sat back and enjoyed the drama her conflict enflamed; however, his mother’s games and vanity collided and her actions turned on her. Venus grew intolerably jealous of a human woman named, Psyche. People compared the girl’s beauty to that of the Goddess.

    Cupid and psyche

Venus commanded her son to pair the innocent child with the most hideous creature alive. Unforeseen by Venus, once Cupid laid eyes on Psyche he was smitten. Some legends say he scratched himself with his own arrow others say it was truly love at first sight. Either way, Cupid could not turn away. He hid himself from Psyche to conceal the relationship from his envious mother. When Psyche snuck a peak at her lover’s face, instead of the horrible ugliness people teased her with, she saw the true beauty of Cupid. She immediately returned his love, even through the trials Venus forced on her. Later, the Gods allowed Psyche to become immortal and wed Cupid. A true love story. One that would sell in the millions to this day.

Saint Valentine within the Roman church

Love stories captivate people, survive the ages, and travel across the vast oceans. Until all hear of the obstacles a couple overcame and the long lasting life together that followed. History teaches of several Saint Valentines within the Roman church. There was only one who performed secret marriage services for soldiers, who Roman rule prohibited to wed. A law created to force a soldier to focus in war. How can a man put himself fully into battle while his thoughts linger on the wife he left behind? This concern drove young men to take their wives privately.

Father Valentine sympathized. Later, when the priest had been incarcerated for his disobedience, young lovers slipped notes and flowers to him through the prison bars. Symbols of appreciation for the love he helped them find. On February 14th, Father Valentine was executed. His last act was to send a love letter to the daughter of his jailer. A love letter to this young girl ‘From Your Valentine’.

    History of Valentine’s Day

The history of Valentine’s Day remains a mystery. The legend of secret marriages and the brave priest personify the celebration of love and romance we all want and need. Perhaps it is pure fiction or partly true. Perhaps it is even greater and sweeter than this tale. Whatever the reason, a single day each year is set aside to lift up the one we love more than any other.

How Does Cupid Tie Into Valentine's Day

As a Valentine you give and receive tokens of love and affection. Our children exchange small cards and notes on candies. Our parents hold hands after fifty years spent together, while friends plan romantic outings. Whether the marketing giant Cupid hits you with his painless heart shaped arrow, or the legendary Eros pierces you with the fiery tip of his golden arrow, share cupid’s gift with your loved one. Valentine’s Day only comes once a year!

How To Be A Better Parent

    0

Parenting is always evolving, and as the child begins to grow up, the job changes. Becoming a better parent should always be something that is yearned for, as the skills constantly need to be honed. Parents are the biggest influence in the life of their child, so becoming the best parent possible is of paramount importance. To become a better parent, the following tips on parenting and useful steps may prove to be beneficial for you.

First and foremost, everything a parent does needs to be done with unconditional love. This is non-negotiable. Love is the root of parenting, the building block that will eventually house all of the other magnificent character traits encompassed by great parents.

18 Tips on Parenting To Be A Better Parent

Parents strive to be the best for their children. It is only natural to want to be the best, and provide the absolute best of everything for your child. Parenting is a difficult learning curve that is filled with a roller-coaster of emotions. Wanting the best for your children shows unconditional love and care. The bond between parent and child is incredible, and the feeling of love a parent has for their child is immense. Sometimes a parent can be a little unsure if they are being the best parent for their children, and want to learn ways to be the best parent.

How can you be the best parent for your children? There are many ways to become a better parent, so let’s check them out below!

How To Be A Better Parent

    1. Calmness & Patience

The first tip to become a better parent is that you need to work on your calmness and patience. Parenting can be a very demanding job, and it is often done while enduring through years of poor or little sleep. Remaining calm and patient will help you to be a better parent because you will be able to react to situations in a much more relaxed manner, which can help to diffuse tense situations. This is especially essential in regards to discipline.

    2. Discipline

Another tip on parenting for becoming a better parent is to learn how to discipline your children. Children need discipline and rules to follow. The sooner they learn this, the better off they will become as they enter school and the world of work, where there are boundaries in place that must be adhered. Children need to know that they are loved enough to be disciplined.

    3. Bare Necessities

The bare necessities are crucial to parenting. To become a better parent, adopt the tip of stressing the importance of the simpler things in life. Parents need to provide food, shelter, and clothing to their children. While these things are seemingly common sense, there is a tip to be followed with each.

Food needs to be nutritious. Children need to learn about nutrition and the Canadian Food Guide and why it is essential to their health and well-being to eat a proper and nutritious meal at every sitting. The food habits passed on by parents are modelled by children. If a parent wants their children to eat properly to remain in good health, then they have to set the example. Children need to have breakfast every day, as this will help them with their academic abilities throughout the day.

Meal time should be a time when the entire family sits together and discusses the day, while eating a healthy and well-balanced meal. The proper fuel helps propel the body properly, keeping your children alert and active.

Shelter should be a comfortable and safe place to receive a good night’s sleep. Sleep is crucial to the alertness and mental ability of a child. Children need to be well rested before school, so that they have the energy requisite of paying attention all day to their teachers.

Clothing is another obvious thing, but children need to learn the value of a dollar. Clothes do not have to brand name or brand new. To be a better parent, you need to allow your children to know the difference between wanting something and earning something. Money can be well spent on many things for the family; it does not have to be squandered on the latest trends. This lesson can also help your children to learn to have confidence in themselves, raising their self-esteem.

    4. Role Model

Becoming a better parent requires that you are an excellent role model for your children. At all times, a good parent is kind, courteous, respectful, polite to others, and treats their spouse with tenderness. Children need to see examples of how to behave before they can adopt them.

    5. Integrity

A parent needs to have integrity if they want to be a better parent. A good parent has plenty of integrity, and always says what they mean and follows through with actions threatened. A good parent knows the importance of sticking to their guns, or else the children will get a mixed message and may behave inappropriately as a direct consequence.

    6. Consistency

A great tip for becoming a better parent is to have consistency. This is especially prevalent when there are multiple children. Kids are always able to notice when something is not fair. Good parents know to keep things fair, most notably in terms of discipline, praise, and rewards. Children should always know how their parents are going to react, keeping surprises to a minimum.

    7. Pride

Becoming a better parent means not worrying about giving your children all the things you did not have, rather giving them all the things that you did have. Teach your children to be proud of who they are and where they come from. Children need to learn about their ancestry. A better parent instills in their children a good sense of self and the confidence to walk tall.

    8. Values

Children need to learn values, morals, and ethics. The world may be full of drudgery and atrocities, but they need to know that they are responsible for their own actions. Becoming a better parent involves teaching your children to stand up for what is right and something that they believe in, sticking to their principles no matter the consequence.

    9. Education

Parents that want to become better need to work in tandem with their children’s teachers to educate their children. They need to stress the importance of a good education, and must be willing to help at home so that the homework and studying gets done every night. Parents need to read to their children every day, cultivating a lifelong love of reading and learning. Reading to your young children can expand their horizons, transcend boundaries, and allow their imagination and creativity to soar to unfathomable heights.

    10. Support

Becoming a better parent requires that you offer forth intensive support for your children. This tip is necessary because children need to have a place to go when they need emotional, verbal, physical, and spiritual support. A good parent knows that they should provide this support; for a realistic fear, their children may seek guidance elsewhere, which may be wrong in myriad facets.

    11. Communication

The lines of communication need to be honest and open at all times with your child. This tip to becoming a better parent is always going to be changing, as the needs of the child will continually changes as they age and mature. Parents must always be ready to give thoughtful insight to their children, and to offer advice that is practical, logical, and based on sound reasoning.

    12. Independence

A good parent knows that eventually they have to ease up on the reins and loosen the apron strings. Children need to grow up. Parents cannot protect them from everything that the world throws at them, try as they might. In this regard, becoming a better parent involves knowing when to let go, when to hold on, and when to slacken the line just a smidgen.

    13. Compassion

Children need to learn compassion, and becoming a better parent encompasses teaching your children, through example, how to be compassionate toward all people. Teaching your children about mutual respect and cultural diversity will serve them well as they grow up. There are a plethora of people in this world that are disadvantaged, and they need sympathy and support. A parent that wants to become better may give their child the gift of taking them to do volunteer work with the elderly, or serving meals at a homeless shelter.

    14. The importance of balance

Naturally you want to be the best for your children, however, it is important that you provide good balance. There are times, where tough love is required, and this is essential for raising well-rounded children. They need to experience mistakes, and learn from these, as that is an important part of life. You may always want everything perfect for your child, which can at times make it difficult to enforce discipline, or see your child make mistakes. However, balance is always important for a child to become successful and independent, to learn how to survive in the open world when the time comes.

    15. Provide love and care

All that is required to be the best parent to your children is unconditional love. Children need to feel loved and cared for to feel secure and happy. Giving your children love and affection provides them with confidence and raises their self-esteem, and most importantly it gives them a sense of belonging. Physical affection is important for many reasons, especially as it shows love and makes a children feel special. Other forms of love can be through encouraging and positive words, as it is equally important to build on a child’s self-esteem through boosting their confidence. Being part of a loving family that radiates with positivity is a great way to be the best for your children.

    16. Time and attention

To be the best parent, it is essential to give quality uninterrupted time to your children. The time should be for bonding and creating happy memories. The activity should appeal to your child, and be of great interest to him or her. Other times it can be time shared helping each other when necessary. Time between parent and child is essential to promote self-worth and a feeling of importance. The activity doesn’t need to be extravagant, as it is about spending time together. There are many opportunities through a day where parent and child can come together to spend time together. Both the parent and the child will benefit from sharing quality time together, as it strengthens the bond and connection.

    17. Work together

It is essential that both parents work together in an amicable way to be the best for their children. Parenting skills need to be practiced and agreed from both sides to provide unity. Parents need to show respect to each other and provide a happy environment for their children. Disagreements should be handled appropriately and preferably away from the children. Having parents that work together provides the children with the very best. Both parents providing the same love and support is essential for the well-being of the children.

    18. Praise and acknowledgement

Children need support and encouragement from parents. They’re still growing and developing, and during this time it is essential that their efforts are praised and acknowledged to build on their confidence. Children strive to impress their parents. The more they are rewarded with praise for their achievements, the more they are likely to put in all their effort to do their best. A parent’s support is crucial to their child’s happiness and confidence, as it helps to build on their esteem and self-belief.

Parents are dedicated to being the best to provide a good life for their children. Love, understanding, time and patience are required to be the best for your children. All they need is a caring environment, with parents that treat them with respect and unconditional love. Children thrive and become wonderful independent, self-sufficient, confident well-rounded individuals from the nurture and care that they receive from their parents.

How To Be A Better Parent

11 Steps To Be A Better Parent

Parenting is a wonderful thing, but it also is a huge responsibility. At times, you may feel you are losing control and that your life is becoming unmanageable. You may feel somewhat powerless over your children’s behaviour or the chaos that results. While there are no guiding principles to parenting, good common-sense, though, can go a long way.

Are you asking yourself: what can I do to be a better parent? These 11 steps will help improve your parenting skills. Prior to step 1, though, is admitting you need a little help. Once you are open to some guidance, you are on the path to parenting recovery, which will allow you one-day-at-a-time to be a more effective parent.

Step 1: Admit that you are powerless over some of the behaviours of your children

While you can offer guidance and can discipline your kids, the reality is that you are not in complete control over what your kids will do. The sooner you accept that, the better you can cope.

Step 2: Choose a parenting style that is conducted in love

Be sure to act in love toward your children, even when loving them requires punishing them to teach them consequences for their behaviours.

Step 3: Remember that you are the parent

Too many parents strive to be their children’s friends. Two words for that are: big mistake.

Step 4: Remember to keep things in perspective

While kids are wonderful and bring great joy, they can also be frustrating as any parent can attest. When your kids make mistakes or knock off the vase or spill milk all over the carpet, try to keep perspective.

    Step 5: Exercise

Stay in shape physically, and you will be more on top of your parenting game. And, of course, working out is a great stress reliever.

Step 6: Do not be afraid to enforce the rules

Refer to Step 3. As the parent, part of your responsibility is to set rules and to enforce them. Unruly children will have problems later in life because they will develop the idea that rules do not apply to them.

    Step 7: Eat well

Remember to eat well, as nutritious choices can help improve your moods.

Step 8: When in doubt, seek counsel from other parents

Parenting is a great adventure. Do not be embarrassed if there is something you do not know. Talk to a trusted friend when you need parenting support.

Step 9: Make time for grown-up things

While your children will be a huge part of your life, try to make time for some adult time.

Step 10: Before bed, review your day

It’s smart to quickly assess your day in the evening. Think about what you perhaps would have done differently, and be grateful for the things that went well.

    Step 11: Enjoy yourself

Your children will one day leave the nest. Try to enjoy them while you have time with them. While each day may not be ideal, try to appreciate some of the special moments.

Hopefully, these 11 steps will provide some food for thought for a few parents out there. Parenting is a journey, at times a challenging one, but it is certainly rewarding as well.

Parenting is an immensely rewarding job to hold, but the rules are constantly changing and you have to do the best that you possibly can. Tips on parenting and steps for becoming a better parent are plentiful, but to be successful you have to take them to heart and adopt them fully. Your children deserve the best possible parent. It might as well be you!

  • 3 Ways Hearing Aids Can Help Your Child With Hearing Loss

    1

If your child’s audiologist has recommended that they need to wear hearing aids, you may be overwhelmed by the options that are available. Parents dealing with a child’s health issue may not know what is the first step to take. That’s why a fully trained, accredited hearing professional is the best person to assist you.

Gone are the days when hearing aids were mere noise amplifiers. Nowadays, hearing aids are far more technologically advanced. Hearing aids are designed to create a natural sound effect, helping the wearer to hear without distortion or interference.

3 Ways Hearing Aids Can Help Your Child With Hearing Loss
Audiologist putting hearing aid in little girl’s ear

Studies have shown that around 8% of children aged six to 19 experience some sort of hearing impairment. For most of them it will only occur in one ear, but this still affects quality of life considerably. If your child is part of this statistic, read on to find how hearing aids can benefit them.

    1. Development of Vital Social Skills

Not being able to hear and understand can lead to feelings of isolation and frustration. Those who are hard of hearing may even retreat and avoid social events. The less your child hears, the less they’ll be able to understand and communicate. They may avoid interacting with friends and family to escape from the challenges of not hearing. Hearing aids will help your child to hear words and sounds. This will help them to understand what is being said and to be able to communicate. By developing their speech, they’ll be improving vital social skills

    2. Coping Skills for Educational Success

Children with hearing loss will find the classroom challenging. If they’re not able to keep up with what the teacher is saying, they could start falling behind with their schoolwork. It won’t take long for your child to start losing confidence in the classroom environment. It’s important to deal with your child’s hearing loss as soon as you can. The best way to do this is to equip them with hearing aids. You’ll notice marked improvements in your child’s schoolwork when they’re able to hear what is being taught.

    3. A Boost In Confidence

A child who can socialize and do well in the classroom is going to have better levels of self-esteem. When a child battles in both social and classroom environments, they’ll often withdraw from life. Hearing loss is one of the reasons your child may be isolating themselves and battling with low self-esteem. Equipping your child with hearing aids will not only improve their hearing, but it will also give them more confidence to cope with both social and school environments.

3 Ways Hearing Aids Can Help Your Child With Hearing Loss

    Final Thoughts

Having a child with a hearing challenge can be daunting for both you as the parent as well as your child. However, this shouldn’t be a challenge you can’t overcome together. Thanks to innovation, modern healthcare solutions and increased knowledge on this topic, families can be empowered. Hearing professionals can assist all of you to still enjoy quality of life, despite it being slightly different than some other households. Whether it’s with a hearing aid or other solution, you can assist your child. If you have a success story, please encourage others with your input.

Planning Your Wedding When You Have Children

    2

Every year 300,000 Canadians choose to say “I do,” tying the knot with their loved one. According to the most recent census, 26% of households include children, and for many couples, their children become a very important part of the wedding ceremony. Many couples even choose to give their children a role to play such as ring bearers, or give them some words to say or a poem to read. See our tips below on how to plan your wedding when you have children!

Planning Your Wedding When You Have Children

When you have children, there are some lovely ways to get them involved, so that you will always remember that they were a special part of your big day. You will also need to think about how you are going to entertain younger children if you have celebrations that last several hours.

    Initial wedding planning

When you are trying to work out the finer details of your wedding, it often helps to consider your children’s routine. Very young children often need to nap during the day and will need regular feeding. If they are attending the wedding, you should consider the best time to have your ceremony. It is worth celebrating a long engagement so that you have plenty of time to work out all of the details. It can also reduce the financial stress of paying for a wedding. If you have older children and teenagers, they may enjoy being involved in the planning process, from choosing wedding cake to deciding on wedding music

    At the wedding ceremony

If you have young children, toddlers or babies, it would be a good idea to arrange for another couple of guests to be in charge of them during your wedding ceremony. You may even want to hire a wedding babysitter so that you can concentrate solely on your marriage vows. Older children will enjoy being part of your big day and may even thrive when given a job to do, such as showing guests to their seats. If you and your partner have children from a previous relationship, it is a good idea to recognize them during the wedding ceremony – by getting married you are bringing everyone together, not just you as a couple. Uniting a family with a wedding is a very special thing.

    Bridesmaids and pageboys

If you are thinking of having younger children as bridesmaids and pageboys, then it is important that their outfits are comfortable, in particular the shoes. Small children aren’t used to walking in tight, formal shoes and certainly not anything with a higher heel. Instead you should make sure that they are in soft-soled, comfortable shoes. You can even consider pairing wedding outfits with little baseball shoes. It is not advisable to spend a fortune on bridesmaid or pageboy outfits for young children – they can easily get food or dirt on them. They are also unlikely to wear them again after the wedding, because little people grow very fast!

    Clothes for your teenage children

Going shopping for wedding attire with your teenage children is an excellent opportunity for bonding. It can be a wonderful experience looking for a new dress or a suit, giving them the option to inject some of their own personal style. Younger teens often don’t have the opportunity to wear prom-style clothes, or formal outfits – their wedding clothes can help them to feel very grown-up for the day.

    The wedding breakfast

It helps to be food savvy when you have children at your wedding. Young ones are generally not going to appreciate canapés followed by a three-course meal. It is worth planning a special menu for children that is quick and easy to eat. Keep it simple and don’t worry about gourmet food – save that for your more-discerning grown-up guests. When it comes to entertaining the younger wedding guests, putting together a special party bag with some gifts such as coloured pens and puzzles is a good idea. If your budget will stretch to it, you can even hire a special entertainer or even a wedding creche.

    Evening party

Many couples choose to have a wedding reception party that continues on into the evening. This is when very young children often get very tired. Fortunately many little ones have the wonderful ability to sleep through a disco. It is a good idea to have some blankets and pillows prepared, so that if they choose to have a nap on the chairs at the side, they are nice and comfortable. When you have children, it is wonderful to get them involved in your big day. Your wedding can be a true celebration of love and family.

Creative Ways For Raising A Child As A Single Parent

    5

So you’re a single parent. Think about what this sentence means for a moment. Single, without a spouse, who has children. It simply means you are raising your children on your own, most of the time. You have to be a nurturer and a disciplinarian. Let’s look at some Creative Ways For Raising A Child As A Single Parent.

Raising A Child As A Single Parent

Every child has 1 basic need and that is to be loved. If you love a child, you will provide the rest of their needs, food, shelter, and education as well as discipline.

    1. Meal Time

When raising a child, meal times can be chaotic! If they are hungry, feed them. It doesn’t have to be anything fancy, or on a strict schedule, since most kids prefer simple meals. Ask what they like to eat and prepare it. They will eat it. Most kids have a dislike for many foods, but if you continue to introduce or include these in your daily meals they will become accustomed to it and start to enjoy it. While growing up, we were forced to eat everything on our plate no matter what it was. I have found this causes more fear and tension at dinner time. Kids even start worrying about the meal before it happens.

It is way better to establish the taste or try it rule and let it go. Of course no child can live on candy or sweets, but if he likes is a peanut butter sandwich, what harm can it cause. He will not continue to eat only peanut butter for ever, his tastes will change! (Peanut butter is equal to a serving of protein like meat). As children mature, they change likes and dislike frequently and forcing will only cause more resistance. So my rule for peace at the dinner table is, take a small taste you may be surprised that you actually like it, Surprise! Your time is better spent talking to your kids about their day and not causing food fears.

    2. Discipline

Part of raising a child also includes disciplining them. If they are breaking the rules, do they know what the rules are? Make a chart and hang it up. We have found if the rules are stated and easy to follow, they will follow them!

    Simply state:
Be respectful of each other and others property.
Hands are for helping not hurting (no hitting, etc.)
Homework before TV time or what ever your house rules are.

Punishment should be quick and fit the crime. If someone, let’s say, hits a sibling, a time out may give them time to cool down and think about how it feels to be hit. Of course, no one likes to be hit and it’s painful.

    Give Your Child 2 Choices

If you are dealing with a 2 year old or around that age, there is a great easy way to handle difficult situations such as you are in a hurry to get out the door but the little one insists they are not going! This age child needs choices, simple limited choices. They also need a 5 minute warning. Say the child’s name first to make sure he or she is listening and understands what you are saying. For example, Isabelle, it will be time for us to go in 5 minutes, do you want to bring your teddy bear or your dolly? Now you have taken away the decision about going and the choice is now what do you want to bring. Notice you gave your child only 2 choices, make sure they are choices you can live with.

Lets say she decides to bring her hugest stuffed animal, you simply say that is not one of the choices, do you want to bring your teddy bear or your dolly, and then move on to something else. Don’t give the opportunity to discuss further. Tell her, it is time to get in the car now, grab your dolly and let get going, make it fun go, go, go, hop to the car, this can be another choice, do you want to hop or skip to the car.

    Distraction

You will be amazed how quickly the decision about going or what to bring goes away. This is a very powerful tool. Use it frequently. You will become a wizard at redirecting and distracting. Children need to be a part of the decisions about their lives and to anticipate what is happening next. It eases anxiety and stress and makes for a happier better balanced child.

    3. Redirection: The calmer road to following rules

Raising a child involves redirecting. This sets limits, but allows the child to feel they are a part of what is happening. If your child is involved in an undesirable behaviour, it is easy to get sucked into the vacuum of reacting and getting angry or punishing based on your feelings or mood at that minute. If you can take a step back and take a deep breathe, you can handle almost anything without causing more discipline issues and reassignment. Let’s say your son is jumping off the couch onto the coffee table, or running around the house screaming. This usually means he has some pent up energy or anxiety from his day at school or day care. Take them outside. This is the ultimate redirection.

Observing the behaviour will tell you how he is feeling and what activities he needs at that time. If it is raining, we still go out rain or shine. If a child is grumpy, put on a rain coat, grab the umbrellas, and go walk in the rain. It doesn’t have to be a soaking wet excursion. It can be a simple: let’s see how it feels to let the rain fall on our umbrellas and step in some puddles.

    Special Quality Time

There is not a child in the world that wouldn’t enjoy this. Special time with you, peaceful quiet rain drops, enjoying nature in a way they usually avoid! When you come back inside, make some hot chocolate (let them stir) and put in the marshmallows. Watch a favourite movie together. If they need more activities, do a craft. Break out the markers and some shaving cream. Shaving cream craft is big fun and clean! Build a fort out of sheets and chairs.

When you kids spend quality time with you, it doesn’t have to be expensive or fancy. Watch your discipline problems go out the door. If it is not raining, running at the park is a great way to run off steam. I have mine run races or just run as fast as they can, they love it. Kids love to be the best at something, so encourage and praise their success, no matter how small. If you catch them doing something good, praise them lots!

As a single parent, hopefully you have or can develop a network of support, so you won’t be in it alone. Your own family and friends can become your greatest support. No one should have to go it alone, and remember your kids are in it with you for life. Remember the children are in this circle too. You are never alone in raising your child as a single parent!

There are all kinds of different approaches to make a valentine’s day cake. Many Valentine’s Day cakes are decadent chocolate desserts full of deep rich cocoa and other flavours from caramel, to coconut. The trouble with chocolate is that while it can be as beautiful as it takes, it often lacks the pizzazz that you can invoke with other flavours. Vanilla cake has a reputation for being boring. Yet it’s essential as that blank canvas that affords you the creativity to pull off something as eye-catching. Something as surprising as a Valentine’s Day cake full of cinnamon flavour and topped with sprinkles, candy, marshmallow sticks, and chocolate!

Mexican Hot Chocolate Bombs With Jose Cuervo Tequila

    8

My favourite hot chocolate is often Mexican hot chocolate. Sweet and spicy is always a more exciting combination than other sweet combos like bittersweet or sweet and tart. These Mexican hot chocolate bombs do just that, and they are even flavoured with Jose Cuervo tequila for some extra kick. There is also a special added surprise treat of a Tequila chocolate truffle inside each cocoa bomb!

There are tons of hot chocolate varieties with high and low levels of sweetness, but every once in a while, the only hot chocolate that will hit the spot is a Mexican hot cocoa with its subtle heat of chili and cayenne pepper. Plus, the peppery heat works in tandem with the warmth of the hot beverage to make you feel extra toasty on a wintery day.

The Benefits of Mexican Hot Chocolate

Hot chocolate bombs make for an exciting beverage and fabulous kitchen decor if you like to keep them in a clear jar next to the stove. They are fun to grab and toss into a mug when you are ready to pour steamy hot milk over one and watch it transform before your eyes. The deep, subtle spice that builds in your throat with every sip becomes a soothing heat as the cocoa washes your palette and radiates warmth through your chest as you feel it trickle down your esophagus.

    A Perfected Recipe

These Mexican hot chocolate bombs are especially nuanced, made with three different kinds of chocolate that play off of the Mexican hot cocoa mix and other flavors. The instructions below will show you how to make everything you need and then direct you to build your hot chocolate bombs perfectly for the best results. In order to make these bombs, you will need silicone molds to form the outer shell. You also will need a piping bag of some kind. If you don’t have one, you can make one by snipping the corner of a resealable plastic bag.

You Can Make this Mexican Hot Chocolate Bombs Without Alcohol

If you would like to enjoy this recipe with your kids, you can easily take out the Tequilla within the truffles and the recipe will still taste delicious.

How to Store the Hot Cocoa Bombs

Store your hot cocoa bombs in a plastic container at room temperature for 1 week because it contains a truffle or up to 2 months if filled with only hot cocoa mix.

Tequila infused chocolate truffles, Mexican hot cocoa, mini marshmallows, chili, and cayenne pepper inside! This recipe makes about 8-10 Mexican Hot Cocoa Bombs.

    1.Tequila Chocolate Truffles Recipe

Let’s start by making the tequila chocolate truffles to insert in the hot chocolate bombs. This recipe will make 8-10 truffles.

    Ingredients

    Material Needed

    • 1 wax paper line cookie sheet
    • Small pot
    • Whisk
    • Ice cream scooper

How To Make The Tequila Chocolate Truffles

Using a small pot, fill halfway with water and bring to a simmer. Place a heat safe bowl on top of the small pot. Combine the chocolate chips and allow to melt completely in the bowl. Whisk in the sweetened condensed milk and tequila until combined and thick. Place the bowl into the fridge for about 3 hours to harden.

Using a small ice cream scooper, scoop out some ganache and mold into a ball. Place onto a wax paper lined cookie sheet and back into the refrigerator while you make the hot cocoa bombs.

    2. Mexican Hot Cocoa Mix Recipe

    Makes 6-8 servings

    Ingredients

    • 1/2 cup dark cocoa powder
    • 4 tbsp sugar
    • 1 tsp cinnamon
    • 1/2 tsp cayenne pepper
    • Pinch of nutmeg

How To Make Mexican Hot Chocolate Mix

In a small bowl, whisk together the cocoa powder, sugar, cinnamon, cayenne, and nutmeg. Put aside.

    3. Mexican Hot Cocoa Bombs Ingredients

    • 30oz of Milk Chocolate melting wafers (about 900 grams or 3 3/4 cups)
    • 8 tbsp of Mexican hot cocoa mix (see recipe above)
    • 1 cup of mini marshmallows
    • ¼ cup chili powder
    • ¼ cup cayenne pepper

    Material Needed

    • 1 small skillet
    • 2 Silicone Sphere Molds (Amazon, Showcase, etc.)
    • 1 disposable piping bag
    • 1 cookie sheet fitted with wax paper

    4. How To Make The Mexican Hot Chocolate Bombs

Use a paper towel or clean kitchen towel and wipe the inside of the silicone molds. This will allow your chocolate mold to have a shiny coat on it. Using a heat safe bowl, pour into the bowl and place the remaining of the melting wafers in the microwave for 30 second intervals. Make sure to stir the chocolate after each 30 seconds until completely melted and smooth.

Using a spoon, spoon about 1 to 2 tbsp of the chocolate into the mold. Carefully swirl the chocolate to completely coat the inside of the mold. Lightly shake the extra chocolate back into the bowl. Place the coated molds into the fridge for 15 to 30 minutes or until it’s set.

Remove from the fridge and gently peel the silicone mold back away from the hardened chocolate shell. Carefully place the mold onto the cookie sheet. Repeat steps with remaining molds. Scoop some melted chocolate into the piping bag and set aside. You might have to reheat again in the microwave for 15 second intervals. You should now have 12 half sphere molds.

Heat a plate in the microwave for 30 seconds, and be careful as the plate might be hot. Carefully take the open side of the sphere and place it onto the plate to melt off the uneven edges to create a smooth edging. Place the shell back onto the cookie sheet and allow the edge to harden.

    5. How To Put Together The Hot Cocoa Bomb

Scoop about 1 tbsp of the Mexican hot cocoa mix into the bottom of the sphere mold.

Place the top of the shell back onto the warm pan to melt the edges for a few seconds. Quickly place the melted edges onto the filled shell and gently press down. Allow the Mexican hot chocolate bombs to set before enjoying in a 8oz/1 cup of steaming milk!

What Is The History Of Valentine’s Day

    6

Although the history about Valentine’s Day is not clear, it has become just one of the most well-liked season amongst enthusiasts and also florists. The typical icons of Valentines Day in this period are cupids, the heart, rose bushes, cuddly teddy bears, as well as words and phrases of affection. Children swap valentine greeting cards designed with the latest witty and animated icons whilst adults carried on with the custom of card presenting which can make the day after Christmas time; to be the next biggest card sending vacation of the twelve months.

red roses lay on the calendar with the date of February 14 Valentine's day

    Historical Past of Valentine’s Day

An additional edition of the historical past of Valentines Day explained that Valentine felt affection for his prisoner’s daughter and prior to his loss of life he sent her a letter and signed it with the phrase from your Valentine. There was an aura of romantic endeavours surrounded his death and people who knew about it put out the story.

By the seventeenth century, it became the custom for young companions to swap little keepsakes and hand written intimate notes with each other. By the eighteenth century, greeting cards started to be commercially created only for the festival. And, by the mid-section of the nineteenth century, merchants began to provide unique tokens for young males to offer to the women they were dating.

    True History of Valentine’s Day

If someone was to look back into the traditional records of the Catholic Church, they will discover that the true history of Valentine’s Day centres around the time when a saint named Valentine was martyred because of his religious beliefs. Evidently, he was mortally wounded when he dared to disobey the Roman Ruler Claudius II, and carried out covert marriages for young companions.

Other records declared that Saint Valentine was slain when he assisted Christian believers to get away from the control of Roman interrogators who were afflicting and eliminating prisoners. An additional intriguing thing to be aware of about the historical past of Valentines Day is that the Catholic Church really identified 11 various saints called Valentine, and 3 of them revealed that February the 14th was their day of recognition.

What Is The History Of Valentine's Day

Despite the fact that the past events on the history of Valentines Day is not always as intimate as we are directed to think, the truth remains that it has turned out to be the single most well-liked, as well as commercially lucrative, season ever in this world today.

How To Raise Your Children With Strong Empathy

    7

We live in a world full of narcissists and self-obsessed people! They’re no denying it, and in such a world where sometimes kindness is rare, bringing up a child and instilling in him the qualities of giving, humbleness, kindness, giving, compassion, and empathy is a tough task indeed. Here are 5 tips on how to raise your children with strong empathy.

How To Raise Your Children With Strong Empathy

    Be Empathetic Yourself

In contrast to the popular notion, children actually tend to imitate what their parents ‘do’ and not listen to what their parents ‘say.’ Actions speak louder than words, and if you want your kids to show empathy, one of the simplest ways is to be empathetic yourself. In the fast paced life that we lead today, we often tend to lose out on patience easily, and demonstrate behaviour that is, in no way, termed as empathetic. Keep track of your behaviour, not only will it help you as an individual, but also help you with your ultimate goal of having your child develop strong empathy.

    Read Fiction with Your Kids

Studies have found that reading fiction can help children understand their emotions better, and it helps them relate to what other people feel as well thereby inculcating in them empathy. Reading stories from a first person perspective can have a profound impact on a developing child’s brain and can help train his neural network, which can, help him process his emotions in a better way.

    Praise!

Teaching your children to praise each other and the people around them regularly can have a huge impact! It not only teaches them to be grateful, but also helps them connect with the people around them on a much deeper level. Start by praising your children and other members of the family for every small gesture that they do, and encourage your kids to do the same.

    Encourage Volunteering

Teaching and encouraging your child to take part in volunteering activities at an early age can be quite helpful. You may be worried about exposing them to the harsh realities of life at such a tender age, but ironically, that is exactly what helps them have more empathy and develop the qualities of humbleness, gratefulness and compassion towards others. Volunteering helps children understand that helping those that are less fortunate is a responsibility and not an option.

    Validate Emotions

Most parents, whether they realize it or not, tend to invalidate negative emotions in their kids right when they spot them, such as fear, anxiety, sadness etc. Doing this is a mistake, because growing kids need to learn and process every type of emotion to understand it better, and develop the complete emotional vocabulary. The next time you see your child feeling sad because someone got hurt, validate his emotions. This will encourage him to see the world through a new lens and for what it truly is.

I hope you enjoyed reading our tips to help raise your children to be a compassionate and empathetic individual!

How To Store All Of Your Winter Items

    Winter Clothes

It will be tempting to store your winter clothes in a cardboard box and then move it into your garage. This area is often poorly insulated, which means that your clothes will be vulnerable to strong temperature fluctuations, moisture, mould and mildew.

    Skis:

    • Clean and wax your skis before putting them away for storage.
    • Store them in a temperature-controlled environment.
    • Strap them together to maintain their shape.
    • Keep them off of concrete floors.

    Snowboards:

    • Clean and wax your snowboards before putting them away for storage.
    • Store them in a temperature-controlled environment.
    • Keep them off of hard surfaces. A good solution is to rest them on a wall-mounted skateboard rack.

    Ice Skates:

    • Do basic ice skate maintenance before putting them away for storage.
    • Store them in a temperature-controlled environment. Too much moisture can rust the blades.
    • Open up laces to let air circulate inside. This prevents mould, mildew and strong odour.
    • Apply WD-40 or mineral oil on the blades. Wrap them with clean, dry towels. This will stop rust.

    Snow Blowers

You can store a snow blower in a garage or shed throughout most of the year. It can still be sensitive to moisture, so you’ll have to do a few things before you put it away:

    • Lubricate metal parts with rust-preventative spray.
    • Get a snow blower cover.

    • Drain the gas or use fuel stabilizer.
    • Wipe down and wax surfaces.

Choosing The Best Snow Blower For Your Driveway

    6

While it’s best to keep active over the winter months, you can really overdo it tackling large shoveling jobs. If you want to save that energy for other, more entertaining winter activities, it’s worth considering investing in a snow blower. When picking the perfect snow blower, it’s important to consider the ground beneath the snow. For example, single-stage snow blowers can be dangerous if used on gravel terrain, and electric models can help avoid damage when used on softer surfaces like a wooden deck. While area size should also be taken into account, here’s a brief guide to help you choose the best snow blower for your driveway!

    Gravel

When removing snow on a gravel driveway, the goal is to clear as much as possible without throwing any gravel along with it. Two or three-stage snow blowers (the latter are only available from a few manufacturers) are ideal for gravel, as they allow you to adjust the clearing height. By contrast, single-stage snow blowers clear right to the ground which means the clearing height cannot be adjusted—ending up with gravel being thrown with the snow.

    Stamped Concrete

When choosing a snow blower for stamped concrete, make sure its rotating blades do not touch the surface as this can cause cracks and damage. Just like gravel surfaces, a two-stage or a three-stage model are ideal because they let you adjust the clearing height to your preference, so you can avoid touching the ground directly. If you already have a snow blower that makes contact with the ground, make sure its rotating blades are not sharp.

    Steep Slopes and Terrain

Steep slopes and terrain are some of the hardest surfaces to clear, so make sure you’re being cautious. Lightweight, engine-driven snow blowers can help take off most of the load while maintaining strong traction, which will help you avoid a slippery fall. If you already own a snow blower that is a little bit heavy, consider adding tire chains to support traction.

    Ice and Compacted Snow

There’s nothing like a big pile of thick snow and ice at the end of your driveway to put your snow blower to the test. Single-stage and even some two-stage snow blowers may not have the necessary power to clear it, but three-stage snow blowers will. An additional auger helps ensure that snow and ice is broken up effectively and propelled out the chute without clogging up the works. With that said, make sure you tackle these jobs patiently to give the snow blower time to do its job while avoiding clogs.

    Wooden Deck

While not likely a part of a typical driveway, decks are worth covering as another type of surface that requires special consideration. An important feature to consider when choosing a snow blower for a wooden deck is maneuverability. Electric models are a great option, as they are lightweight and easy to move—making them perfect for those hard-to-reach areas on the deck. An electric model is also ideal because they tend to have plastic paddles instead of metal ones which helps prevent damage on wooden surfaces.

Four boxes of cereal could last you for a month. Take boxed cereal off your weekly shopping list until you need to replenish it. Items on you list spark an interest to buy.

    4. Check The Weekly Ads

Compare what you need with what you can afford. Go to Internet weekly ads for your store. Knowing in advance will save money. Seasonal fruits, vegetables, and popular cuts of meat are usually the features. Skip the bulk purchases when it more than doubles what you need.

    4. Look At The Food Items Priced Separately And The Sale Price

Compare apples to oranges. Apples offered for $1.50 a pound and choose the amount of apples you need. Oranges offered 8 for $5 would not reduce. While the price for oranges is a bargain, you may only need 1. Look at the items priced separately and buy what you need at the sale price!

When you do not know what it is, leave it at the store. Condition yourself not to make impulse purchases. Leave bakery goods or delicatessen food when it is not on your list. A sample is free, but the product is not. Do not buy for the gratitude of a bite or a coupon.

    7. Estimate Your Bill Before You Go Shopping

The total of your grocery bill may shock you. Take time to evaluate your list and determine what you need.

    8. Compare Recipes And Ingredients

How To Avoid Vitamin D Deficiency

    8

Vitamin D plays a role in more than healthy bones, and adequate consumption is important for overall health. Vitamin D is obtained from skin exposure to sunlight, or from food sources and supplements. Symptoms of vitamin D deficiency include rickets and osteomalacia. Let’s have a look at how to avoid vitamin D deficiency!

    Vitamin D

why you should take vitamin D?

Vitamin D is a fat soluble vitamin important for good health. It can be obtained from natural food sources, sunlight exposure, or as a supplement. Along with calcium, vitamin D helps to prevent osteoporosis in older adults.

    Vitamin D is needed for:

    1. The absorption of calcium and phosphorous;
    2. Bone mineralisation, bone growth, and bone remodeling;
    3. Neuromuscular and immune function;
    4. And reducing inflammation.

    Food Sources of Vitamin D

Adequate vitamin D intake is important not only for calcium absorption and bone health, but also for a healthy immune system, and studies suggest higher vitamin D intake may lower the risk of certain diseases such as heart disease. A deficiency in this nutrient can cause osteomalacia (misshapen bones) in adults and rickets in children. Adding the top food sources of Vitamin D to the diet helps to prevent deficiency and promote overall health.

Many of the top food sources of fortified vitamin D such as ready-to-eat cereals, bread, margarine, yogurts, orange juice, and milk products. Vitamin D is found naturally in few foods. Besides fortified foods, good food sources of vitamin D include:

    • cod liver oil
    • cooked salmon
    • mackerel
    • tuna canned in water
    • sardines canned in oil
    • mushrooms which have been exposed to ultraviolet light in order to increase vitamin D levels

Beef liver, egg yolks, and cheese also contain small amounts of vitamin D.

How To Avoid Vitamin D Deficiency

How much vitamin D do you need? The National Institutes of Health currently recommends a daily intake of 5 mcg (600 IU) of vitamin D is adequate for adults aged 19 to 70 years, if there is no exposure to sunlight. This is increased to 15 mcg (800 IU) for adults aged 71 and over.

Also, check with a physician or nutritionist to find out how much intake you need.

    Vitamin D Supplements

Those who wish to supplement with vitamin D should look for vitamin D3 or cholecalciferol. Many multivitamins contain this form of vitamin D, so taking extra in the form of a stand-alone vitamin D supplement is not always necessary. Vitamin D is also available as a supplement or as an injection

Vitamin D can interact with certain medications, so be sure to speak to your doctor before increasing its intake or adding a supplement to your diet.

Sun Exposure and Vitamin D Synthesis

The most important source of vitamin D is sunlight exposure. Uncovered skin absorbs ultraviolet B (UVB) rays, which enable the body to synthesise vitamin D, but it is difficult to say exactly how much sun exposure is needed by each person. The intensity of UVB rays is affected by factors such as the time of year, time of day, latitude, cloud cover, smog, shade, and the amount of melanin in the skin.

Cancer Research UK advises only a short time in the sun is needed for the body to synthesise enough vitamin D. Continued sun exposure that allows for tanning or getting sunburned is unnecessary to meet vitamin D requirements, and increases the risk of skin cancer. People who live in countries of northern latitude can build up their vitamin D levels during the summer months in order to prevent vitamin D deficiency during the winter.

    Effects of vitamin d deficiency

Vitamin D deficiency can lead to bone softening due to poor bone mineralisation. This is known as osteomalacia (bone pains, weak muscles, and fractures) in adults, and rickets (deformity of the skeleton, bow legs, and aches and pains) in children. Long term, a vitamin D deficiency and poor calcium absorption may result in osteoporosis.

    Causes of Vitamin D Deficiency

A vitamin D deficiency can be caused by not eating enough vitamin D-containing foods, getting too little sun exposure, or poor absorption of vitamin D.

Who is most likely to have vitamin D deficiency

The following groups of people are particularly vulnerable to vitamin D deficiency:

    1. People aged 50 and over. Older people cannot synthesise vitamin D as efficiently as they used to.
    2. People with limited exposure to sunlight. People who spend most of their time indoors, such as elderly people who are housebound or living in residential homes, are at risk as UVB rays cannot penetrate glass.
    3. If you cover your skin when outside. Fully covering skin with clothing when outside prevents UVB rays penetrating the skin.
    4. Darker skinned people. High levels of melanin filter out UVB rays, so more exposure to sunlight is needed to manufacture sufficient vitamin D.
    5. People who absorb vitamin D poorly. Liver disease, Crohn’s disease, cystic fibrosis, and gastric bypass surgery may result in poor absorption of vitamin D.
    6. People who are very overweight. Obesity increases the requirement for vitamin D.
How To Avoid Vitamin D Deficiency

As you can see, it’s important to make sure your daily intake of Vitamin D is adequate for optimal health in order to avoid Vitamin D deficiency. If regular exposure to sunlight is not possible, more foods should be eaten that contain vitamin D. Supplementation may also be necessary to avoid symptoms of vitamin D deficiency.
