Newborn Reflexes: The Ingrained Responses of an Infant

4

Newborn reflexes help a baby survive and set the stage for future motor development. Parents can observe and interact with their baby’s ingrained responses.

Newborn Reflexes

A newborn baby has a set of ingrained primitive reflexes that only exist at this point in the infant’s life. These baby reflexes disappear after the first few months of life, but they prepare the child’s body for the motor skills to come.

Newborn Reflexes: The Ingrained Responses of an Infant

The Moro Reflex in newborns

The Moro reflex may be one of the most startling to new parents. Suddenly, for no apparent reason, their newborn spreads his legs and arms and pulls them in again tightly. This startle response is often accompanied by a short cry.

The Babinski Reflex in newborns

To experience the Babinkski reflex, simply stroke one finger gently down the sole of the newborn’s foot. The baby will fan his toes outward. This reflex may last up until age two in some children.

Grasping Reflexes

There are two different forms of grasping reflexes present in newborn babies. The first, most obvious one is the palmar grasp. A baby exhibits the palmar grasp whenever someone presses the centre of his palm. The baby’s hand will gently curl inward and he’ll grasp the finger or other object tightly within his tiny palm. The plantar reflex is a similar behaviour, but instead of the hand, it’s the foot that curls whenever something touches the sole just beneath the toes in an action that looks like he’s grabbing with his foot.

Sucking and Rooting Reflex

A newborn will naturally root toward one side when he feels something touch that cheek and will attempt to suck when something that could be a nipple touches his lips. This rooting reflex is vital to a baby’s ability to successfully breastfeed.

Stepping or Walking Reflex

When held upright with his feet touching the ground or any flat surface, a newborn will move his legs in a stepping or walking pattern. This isn’t a sign that he’ll be an early walker, but a natural reflex that will disappear around the second or third month of life. Once the baby reaches somewhere around 10 to 15 months, he’ll be able to truly support his weight and start practicing his real walking abilities.

The Archer Pose and Tonic Neck Reflex

One of the cutest of the baby reflexes, the archer pose occurs when the baby is lying on his back, often during sleep. When the infant turns his head to one side, the arm on that side will stretch out to point in that same direction while the other arm will bend, this is called a tonic neck reflex. If a parent or caregiver gently turns the baby’s head to the other side, the arms will switch position, too.

newborn reflexes

The fascinating reflexes of a newborn are completely involuntary and only last for a short time in the infant’s life. These responses help the baby survive his first few fragile months out of the womb. It’s just a bonus that they also provide some cute and interesting moments for parents to experience as well.

ilikable Shower Caddy Review

When it comes to your shower, you don’t only want it to be clean and hygienic, you also want things to be nice and organized. One of my personal pet peeves is leaving shampoo bottles on the side of the shower or on the corners of the tub. It gets nasty and it’s unhygienic to have soap scum building up under the bottle.

While we do have a shelf in our shower, this new ilikable Shower Caddy is going to help keep the shampoo, conditioner and soaps where they belong; keeping the sides of my tub cleaner. It’s lightweight but can hold up to 22 lbs, great for large bottles of shampoo! It attaches to tile or most smooth surfaces using the included bionic technology suction cups, making it stick solid to your bathroom tile with a simple push and click! Make life easier when you can find all your important bathroom items like shampoo, conditioner, soap, scrubs and even tooth brushes all in one place with the handy ilikable Shower Caddy.

It keeps your shower items organized and clean with a 6” angled bottom and space in front where water can leak out and not sit which creates a more hygiene shower environment. The fun part, if you don’t need a shower caddy, this one would also look great in the kitchen above the sink or as a spice rack!

Benefits:

  • Powerful suction cup
  • Large capacity caddy
  • Removes easily, no drilling, no holes.
  • Multifunctional shower caddy
  • Great for smooth and non porous surfaces.

Although there are plenty of grab-and-go breakfast ideas for hurried people with crazy schedules, my favourite is to have a tasty batch of blueberry orange muffins handy in the morning. These muffins are also nice just to savour and enjoy with a light/medium roast of coffee, or your favourite tea.

There are all kinds of ways to do breakfast because there are all kinds of ways we start our days. How late you are for work and what side of the bed you got up on play a huge part in how you breakfast. Despite being the most important meal of the day, breakfast is also the most skipped meal of the day. According to this article, “Is Breakfast In Canada In Crisis?”, 23% of Canadians say they skip breakfast at least one day during the work week and a further 11% say they don’t eat breakfast at all during the work week. That Doesn’t make sense!

This blueberry orange muffin is a hand-held breakfast! This muffin recipe include real blueberries and orange zest for a burst of fruity flavour, while also using a healthy amount of yogurt. You can use any yogurt you like for the flavour or nutritional benefits of your choice, but I favour a simple vanilla flavoured yogurt in mine. Brown sugar adds some depth of flavour to this best blueberry orange muffin recipe which can whip up a quick batch of up to 18 medium-sized muffins.

Enjoy at Home or On-the-Go

These easy blueberry orange muffins are excellent when halved and served warm with a buttery spread on each open slice. However, you can also eat them whole, just as they are. 4 Tips For Choosing The Right Roofing Contractor

3

Service provision is an important aspect of everyday living. Your home might require a few repairs here and there to ensure it serves its purpose to your household. One of the elements in your home that might warrant frequent repairs is your roof. Your roof is exposed to all kinds of harm, from harsh weather to falling objects, such as trees.

In the event of such occurrences, your roof might get a hole or two or even get blown off in extreme situations. You’ll need a roofing contractor to attend to the damage. However, not all roof contractors offer the same service provision. Yes, the result is a repaired roof, but how long will the solution last? You want a lasting solution; it’s the only way to get value for your money.

home flooded by upstairs or roof damage - woman holding bucket while water leaking from ceiling in kitchen

For safety purposes, the best time to get a roof repair done is during the summer. How do you find a suitable roofing contractor for your roof repair in summer? Worry not; this article will give you tips to adopt for the selection process. Read on!

1. Inquire About Experience

Experience is crucial in service provision as it’s only through practice that providers will perfect their skills. Better skills mean they’ll meet your needs better without errors. Therefore, ensure your chosen contractor has the right experience. Here, there are two main aspects to consider.

One is the length of time in the business. A roofing contractor who’s been providing services for many years is likely to have mastered this service provision, increasing the success rate of their roofing solutions. You’ll less likely experience a recurrence of your issues, giving you value for your money. Here, the more years in the business, the better their services, which is commendable.

The other aspect is experience in your specific roofing needs. This is because different roofing solutions require different skills. Repairing a metal roof requires different skills from repairing shingles or a brick roof. If your roofing is shingles, ensure the contractor has previously handled shingles repair, not just once or twice. The more the number of years, the more confident you’ll be with their roofing repair services.

2. Consider Qualifications

Roofing services require you to have certain skills. In most cases, these are services you can’t learn in one day or on the job without upsetting one or two clients. As a client, you want a qualified roofing contractor for the job.

Some institutions offer training in this service provision. Therefore, ensure your chosen roofing contractor has a certificate from such an institution. This more or less assures you that the contractor has the skills to upgrade your roof and will meet your needs from the point of know-how. Therefore, you’ll less likely to have recurring issues due to sub-standard work.

3. Look At The Contractor’s Reputation

Reputation refers to the public’s opinion about a given aspect. In this case, it’s about your roofing contractor. Reputation is an important factor in your selection process.

Now, where do you get information on a contractor’s reputation? Consider utilizing the internet and searching the roofing contractor’s company. Is there any negative feedback? Are there current or previous lawsuits involving their services? Ensure the contractor has a positive reputation. You don’t want to fall victim to one who doesn’t.

Also, reviews can assist you. Check the company’s website and go straight to its review section.

You want to know the risk associated with hiring the roofer beforehand. From the website, what do previous and current customers say about the company’s services? You want to settle for a roofing contractor with more positive than negative reviews. However, you need to be aware that some negative reviews can be malicious and positive reviews can be fabricated. Therefore, don’t solely rely on reviews for your decision-making.

4. Check For Insurance

As the roofing contractor meets your roofing needs, be it an upgrade or repair, a lot could go wrong. Hence, there’s a need for insurance coverage.

An insurance cover aims to compensate you by reinstating you to the previous condition you were in before issues arose. Your chosen roofing contractor should have a general liability cover which will answer for any damage to your home due to the contractor’s activities. For instance, your ceiling could get damaged as the contractor repairs your roof. Without insurance coverage, you’ll have to bear the damage independently, which can be costly. However, with insurance coverage, the insurance company will pay for the damage.

Your roofing contractor should also have a workman’s compensation cover. This cover will pay for any injuries the contractor and his workers will sustain as they repair your roof.

4 Tips For Choosing The Right Roofing Contractor

Conclusion

In the course of utilizing your roof, you’ll likely need the services of a roofing contractor. The discussion above gives you tips to help you find a suitable roofing contractor for your roofing needs. Adopt them so that you won’t have to worry about the services you’ll get from a contractor or getting value for your money.

The Spacing Effect: How To Schedule Study Time

2

Effective studying may depend more on how time is organized than on just the amount of time spent. Learn how to take advantage of the spacing effect.

Study time can be hard to find. There may always seem like there is more to do than time allows, especially for high school or college students when they want to have a personal life too. Many students have learned how to use good study strategies and how to find time to study. However, the one thing that is often overlooked is not how much study time is put in, but rather how that time is scheduled.

The Spacing Effect: How To Schedule Study Time

How to Schedule Study Time

Study time should be scheduled on a calendar to prioritize it and to prevent procrastination. Cramming at the last minute can cause panic and it can hurt memory and recall. Everyone finds themselves in a situation where they need to study at the last minute but that should be avoided when possible. Scheduling study time on a regular basis can prevent that last-minute cramming and the panic that goes with it.

If an assignment is known about in advance, then figure the amount of time that will need to be put in and then space that time out over several days or even weeks if possible. That will increase long-term retention and recall of the information and will help students avoid that s remember it on test day. It is referred to as spaced trials or the spacing effect.

How to use the spacing effect

The spacing effect works best with information that has to be remembered at a later date, such as information for an exam or for use years later in a personal career. For example, if an exam might require four hours of study time, that time could be spaced out over a period of days by studying for 30 to 45 minutes a day for a week. Studying for less than 30 minutes at a time, however, may not be sufficient to make good use of a single study session.

Factor in the type of exam that will be given or how the information will need to be recalled and used when planning the overall amount of study time that will need to be put in. Having to recall information for an essay question or for use in a career will require more study time than simply having to recognize that information for a multiple choices quiz.

RESEARCH ON THE SPACING EFFECT

The positive benefits of spaced trials, or spacing effects, have been known for about a century. Some of the earliest research was done by Herman Ebbinghaus in the late 1800s. His studies on learning trials found that multiple trials were a significant factor in memory, as was spacing those trials out. He also found that once information is committed to memory, continuing with more trials helped to make the information more resistant to forgetting over time.

The neuroscience behind the spacing effect

Research on the spacing effect has continued since Ebbinghaus. Learning and Memory reported more recent research in the article “Neurogenesis and the spacing effect: Learning over time enhances memory and the survival of new neurons.” That research helps to continue to support Ebbinghaus theories. Their research showed that, not only did spaced trials enhance memory, the resulting increase in memory produced in an increase in the long-term survival of neuron cells.

SCHEDULING STUDY TIME

Scheduling study time is a very important factor in the long-term retention of information. Spacing study time out into multiple repetitions of exposure to and rehearsal of information is essential. That, along with scheduling and prioritizing study time can be a very effective strategy for good grades and quality career performance.

Knowing how to effectively schedule study time can greatly improve memory and help students make better grades. Start using the spacing effect to improve learning and retain information!

9 Creative Things to Do in Hawaii

1

Hawaii is the vacation paradise that has something for everyone. Sun-drenched beaches, nightlife, traditional luas, golf, tennis, swimming, shopping, surfing, snorkeling, hiking, and nature journeys. There are also many creative things to do in Hawaii that you might not have heard about. We have come up with a list of creative places to visit for your upcoming trip.

When planning a vacation to Hawaii, check travel brochures, the internet, and with a travel agent in order to book the Hawaiian vacation that is right for you; plus any special bargains as well. It is very important that you check out hotel reviews before booking. After all, you want to stay at clean, comfortable, and attractive hotel. You don’t want your Hawaiian vacation to be ruined. A travel agent can also help with planning a stopover and to suggest some of the best places to visit in Hawaii.

Hibiscus, Kailua, Hawaii

Stopovers

If you live either on the East Coast or in the Midwest, I would really suggest that you stop off on the West Coast just to break up the flying time. Most Hawaii packages offer stopovers in either San Francisco, Los Angeles, or Las Vegas for a few days, with hotel packages included. For example, you can stop off in San Francisco first, and then after Hawaii, you can stop off in Los Angeles. You’re getting two vacations in one; so why not take advantage of it.

Best Places to visit in Hawaii

Honolulu, Hawaii- Beach

The best cities in Hawaii to visit, if you’re a city and a beach person like me, are Honolulu and Waikiki. You can go shopping at the Ala Moana Center and the International Market Place. You can take a tour of the city of Honolulu, go down to the Arizona Memorial and take the Pearl Harbor cruise. After sunset, Honolulu becomes nightlife and party city. Polynesian dance revues, the Society of Seven show, and nightclubs; just to name a few.

However, if you want a peaceful quiet Hawaiian vacation, go to the other islands. The best places in Hawaii to vacation with the family are on Maui, Kauai, the Big Island, Molokai, and Lanai. You can lie on the beach, watch the sunrise over Haleakala, play golf or tennis, or go snorkeling.

If you’re a movie buff, I believe that there is a tour on Kauai that takes you to see where South Pacific, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Donovan’s Reef, and Blue Hawaii were filmed.

Nature lovers will not only like seeing the sunrise over Haleakala, but also to go hiking, and visiting Hawaii Volcanoes National Park (just watch out for the Kiluea active volcano).

Even if you’re only going to stay on Oahu, you can go visit Sea Life Park, the Polynesian Cultural Center, take a circle island tour, and if your a surfing buff, the North Shore of Oahu, featuring the huge-crashing waves.

Creative Things to Do in Hawaii

Creative THINGS TO DO IN HAWAII

Are you looking for creative things to do in Hawaii? And, to visit the gems of Hawaii the way the locals do! These are some of the best places to visit in Hawaii for families that will bring out everyone’s creativity!

1. Shop at craft fairs

One of the best creative things to do in Hawaii is to shop at craft fairs. You can find listings for craft fairs in the local magazines or online, and if you’re lucky, you’ll be in town for a big one such as the Made in Hawaii Festival. You can find locally handcrafted items ranging from jewelry, to clothing, to lamps carved out of gourds and delectable island edibles. A far cry from the amusingly “Made in China” products, craft fair vendors often supply handmade items to high end Hawaiian gift shops. This means quality is not compromised while prices are usually significantly below retail. Keep in mind that some vendors are cash only.

2. Hang from a cliff

Few people, even locals, are aware of Honolulu’s climbing company Climb Aloha. A trained instructor will take you and your friends out to a cliff on the coast, teach you how to struggle your way to the top, control the ropes to ensure your safety, and reward you with a cold one (beer or water, your preference) at the days end. Also included are some digital photos so you may prove you are daring to the world. With levels from beginner to advanced, there is something for everyone and if the climbing bug bites? All technical gear are provided.

3. Find hidden talents

A look at local community event listings will provide you with the location and time of lessons that will broaden your horizons. Choose from island specialties like ukulele, hula, and lauhala weaving or experience Tai Chi, yoga, salsa and even cooking classes. Go home with the satisfaction that not only did you relax and play, but you also learned something in paradise.

4. Rent a beach house for part of your trip

You can rent a beach house in Hawaii. This then enables you to go on a fishing charter, reel in your prize mahimahi, then take it home and cook it in your kitchen. It doesn’t get fresher than that. You can also have BBQs with newfound local friends. If you have a Jacuzzi, do the favourite of a friend of mine: Boil in the Jacuzzi then jump into the ocean. Repeat. While many find this exhilarating, I find this excruciating, but you may enjoy it.

5. Go on an unofficial food tour in Hawaii

Collect eatery suggestions from locals (specifically ask what they eat there), get a map and a car, drive to those places, and eat. You may spread this over your entire vacation. You will more than likely be directed out of tourist areas to places you would otherwise have no idea existed. Food is a huge part of Hawaiian culture, to truly experience the islands you must experience their food. Until you’ve been served by a local “auntie” in a place where you feel out of place, you haven’t eaten in Hawaii.

6. Events at the University of Hawaii

You can check out events at the University of Hawaii. Offerings can range from graduate piano recitals to non-tourist hula shows to eclectic late night theatre. Due to Hawaii’s cultural diversity, there are often options with an international flair including professionals from around the world.

7. Spend a Friday evening mingling with the artsy locals

One of the many creative things to do in Hawaii is to take part in Honolulu’s “First Friday” where downtown Honolulu (Chinatown area) becomes alive from 5:30 pm to 10 pm with late-night exhibits and free entertainment. While the locals rarely mingle in downtown Waikiki, we do show up for First Friday and newcomers are welcome. Other islands have similar offerings with Kauai’s Hanapepe Friday art night every week and Maui’s “Friday Night is art night” in Lahaina.

8. Hawaii Luau

Most people have said that your Hawaiian vacation is not complete unless you attend the traditional luau. The most popular ones in Hawaii are the Paradise Cove, Germaine’s Luau, and the Old Lahaina Luau. You will sit down to an all-you-can-eat buffet, have plenty of drinks, and watch a Polynesian dance show.

9. Check out community nightlife

Check out the “Honolulu Magazine” and “Maui Time” to look for local event listings. Find out what the residents are doing, where they party, and join them!

Creative Things to Do in Hawaii

Once you exhaust the offerings of travel guides, you’ll find that simply talking to a few residents opens another side for you to explore and enjoy creative things to do in Hawaii. So seize the day, wander from the tried and true, and revel in Hawaii the way the locals do. You won’t regret it!

How Parents Can Help Children Learn a Foreign Language

0

Many people whose mother-tongue is English consider it unnecessary to learn another language, yet foreign language lessons in school are compulsory for many children. The following article offers practical ideas on how parents can help their children learn a foreign language.

How Parents Can Help Children Learn a Foreign Language At Home

Adults’ Own Experiences of Learning a Foreign Language

Many parents, carers and/or grandparents may not have had a particularly successful or enjoyable time when they were learning a foreign language at school. However, it is very important, when helping children or grandchildren, to set aside any negative attitudes.

Modern language teaching methods in schools have changed significantly, even within the last five to ten years, and it is unhelpful to project one’s own, possibly unproductive, experiences onto the next generation. Therefore, try to adopt a positive attitude and to reinforce with pre-teenage children that learning a foreign language is important and useful and, above all, can be really good fun!

Advantages of learning a foreign language at a young age

It is important to remember that, when you acquire your own language, you have been constantly surrounded by it from birth. This has two implications for parents/grandparents.

Firstly, parents may not wish to wait until their child starts school – all research states that it is never too early to learn a new language. Ideally, this early learning needs to be informal, fun and linked to very young children’s interests. For example, singing songs and playing games to help develop language comprehension skills is a natural way of learning language.

Secondly, children learning another language at school will only receive, at most, a few hours foreign language teaching a week. Therefore, the more they can hear and speak at home the greater progress they will make. After all, nothing succeeds like success!

If your children are old enough to understand the concepts, stress with them that they are living in a world where global communication, international travel, cultural understanding and the global economy are, and will remain, central aspects of everyone’s lives. Talk with them about how much fun it would be to communicate with someone from another country in that person’s language.

5 Tips on learning a foreign language

Share these 5 easy ways to learn a new language with children:

  1. In common with most aspects of life, a young child will respond well if they see that their parent(s) are themselves demonstrating a commitment to an activity. Therefore, parents could have a go at learning some aspects of a foreign language themselves. As an example, parents and child could learn French together. This does not have to be a particularly onerous task.
  2. Take an interest in what your children are learning at school and possibly learn together – many younger children will love it if they make better progress than their parents and if they can show off their knowledge and skills. For example, a good way of helping children to understand a concept is to get them to teach something to parents/grandparents or the family as a whole.
  3. If they ask, test them on their learning homework or practise speaking with them.
  4. A fun idea is to put labels in the foreign language around the house, for example on the doors of different rooms, in the children’s bedrooms and on everyday objects. The whole family can then use the words as they go about their daily routines and set the challenge of who can remember the most.
  5. Another way of getting children accustomed to hearing and using the new language is to greet each other each day in the foreign language and then to progress to some simple questions and answers, for example about the weather or how one is. Eventually, the family could aim to have a simple conversation, possibly around the table at meal times.

Fun and Effective Resources to Support Children Learning a Foreign Language

How Parents Can Help Children Learn a Foreign Language

There are language learning Apps and DVD’s which encourage listening and speaking skills e.g. song and story tapes. Listening is often the most difficult skill to master and so the more fun practice that children can receive the better progress will be made.

If there is satellite TV at home, look out for programmes that are appropriate to the children’s age.

There are many extremely attractive and effective language learning websites which offer games, quizzes, puzzles, interactive activities and songs all of which stimulate and motivate.

Many school boards offer foreign languages program in the classroom or virtual classes to elementary and high school students.

Finally, consider buying books in the foreign language that are written for the age of your child.

These tips will help children learn a foreign language at home and make it a rewarding and fun experience!

1. Snorkeling at Hanauma Bay

One of the fun things to do in Waikiki is snorkeling! Kids will be delighted to get up close and personal with tropical fish in ankle-deep water. Just a short drive from Waikiki, a visit to Hanauma Bay begins with a short video at the Marine Education Center that educates visitors on how to preserve and protect the bay and its inhabitants. It’s a short stroll (or trolley ride) down to the bay from the parking lot. The Bay is sheltered from the waves, which makes it perfect for kids to frolic in the calm, clear ocean waters. At the beach, families can rent snorkel gear or buy snacks. Restrooms, showers, and locker rentals are also available. Keep your eyes open for the state fish, the Humuhumunukunukuapua’a.

Older kids will enjoy the adventure of hiking iconic Diamond Head Crater, or Le’ahi in Hawaiian. Located just minutes from Waikiki beach, the moderate hike up the dormant volcano is 0.8 miles one-way. As you approach the peak, you will encounter a set of steep stairs enclosed in a tunnel. Upon exiting the tunnel, you will be rewarded with panoramic views of the South Shore of Oahu. The trail opens at 6 a.m. and the last hike is allowed at 4:00 p.m. Go early to avoid crowds and heat.

3. Free Hula Shows in Waikiki

A must-do things while visiting Hawaii is to see a hula show. Both kids and adults will be entertained by watching the traditional dance. Grilled Shrimp Kabobs

4

Summer is here! One way I like to celebrate the warmest season of the year is by firing up the barbecue to make this Grilled Shrimp Kabobs recipe!

Grilled Shrimp Kabobs recipe

SHRIMP KABOBS ON THE GRILL

Why do I love this recipe for shrimp kabobs? One reason is because of how quick and easy these kabobs are to put together and cook. You just prepare the ingredients, arrange them on the skewers, and place them on the grill.

Another reason why I love making shrimp kabobs on the BBQ is the variety of items you can add to this dish. Shrimp is a great little protein that flavours well with many different foods. Grilled bell peppers, onions, potatoes, and corn on the cob are just some of the veggie ideas you can layer on your skewers with shrimp to create a fabulous meal.

Grilled Shrimp Kabobs

BEST WAY TO GRILL SHRIMP KABOBS

There are many ways to bbq shrimp skewers. Below are some tips I use to make grilling these under the sea treasures a delight to eat:

  1. How to Prepare Wooden Skewers: It’s best if you soak the bamboo or wood skewers in water at least 30 minutes minimum, but soaking them overnight in water would be best. This way they will last longer on the grill without burning.
  2. Marinate your food on the skewers: your shrimp and other elements on the skewers will have an added kick after letting them sit in a mix of your favourite liquid flavours and spices.
  3. Create a pattern on the skewer: We eat with our eyes as well as our mouths. Putting your food in a certain order on your skewers will look as fabulous as it tastes.
  4. Don’t go too crazy with your ingredients: It is great to have a variety of meat and vegetables on your kabob skewers, but it can become overkill if you load too many different foods.
  5. Add fragrant oil to your skewers: Whether you are using wood, bamboo or metal skewers, you should make sure you add a fragrant oil to the kabobs. Lubricated skewers not only add a bit of scent to the food being grilled, but they also aid in protecting wood skewers from burning on the barbecue.

Gamma Graphene Heated Jacket Review

0

Each season, we need a new jacket for the changing temperatures. What if we could have one that works in any weather. Well, with this all-season Gamma Jacket we can. Now there is no need to spend money on a new jacket each season! I am pleased to have the opportunity to review the Gamma Graphene Heated Jacket!

Gamma Graphene Heated Jacket Review

I knew when winter was over that my daughter had outgrown her current jacket and would be in need of a new one for next winter. Not only had she outgrown her winter jacket but some of her hoodies and other coats were becoming small on her. It was time to replace the old ones with new ones.

When we shop for jackets we tend to buy them in the season they are needed unless of course there is a sale. While I wasn’t planning on purchasing a new jacket at the time, when I heard about this graphene layered thermoregulating jacket, I had to check it out.

What is Graphene?

If you are like me and haven’t heard of Graphene don’t worry not many have since it has only been around since about 2004. It is a nano latticed carbon. This material is natural and safe and is just one atom thick. Graphene is the thinnest, strongest, and most flexible known material. One day this material will hopefully be used in almost everything.

WearGraphene Gamma Jacket

Gamma is Graphene Infused clothing that will last a lifetime and keep you comfortable in any climate. Clothing is made strong and durable with this lightweight material. This material is stronger than steel but light as can be (just under 500 grams).

Gamma Jacket Features

Here are some of the many features of this all season Gamma Jacket for any climate:

  • Built-in Temperature Control – Give your jacket a charge with USB, the power button has 3 settings for comfort. (there’s a pocket next to the power button.)
  • Waterproof and Wind resistant- All the zippers and pockets are waterproof so you and your things truly stay dry.
  • UV-Protection – protects your skin by keeping the UV Rays away.
  • Breathable and Moisture wicking – Graphene won’t let water in the jacket but will absorb the moisture within and release it on the outside.
  • Antimicrobial – helps block out germs bacteria and viruses on contact.
  • Odour proof – although the jacket is washable it will never develop odours so you can wear it all day during an adventure and in the evening without having to clean it.
  • Hypoallergenic – while allergens may stick to your pants but as long as you have your graphene jacket on, they won’t attach to it.
  • Insect repellant – the material blocks the bug’s ability to sense your skin. (My daughter is testing this out during summer camp.)
  • Indestructible – graphene is stronger than steel, which makes it practically indestructible.

Gamma Travel Companion

When we travel to different countries around the world, we never know what the weather will be like during our visit. Once we have found the destination, we begin to plan our wardrobe. If you need warm clothing then our suitcases can get a bit bulky with thicker clothing. Bringing along the Gamma jacket will save space.

If you spend time in the great outdoors, hiking, riding, skiing or any other outdoor sports then you will love this jacket. With 10 pockets there is no need to carry anything extra like a fanny pack or backpack, If you are travelling along trails with lots of trees, you don’t have to worry about tree branches scratching or ripping because it is scratch resistant.

Gamma Graphene Heated Jacket Review

I ordered a women’s large Gamma jacket for my daughter since she was the one who needed it the most. Although the jacket is a bit big, she is still growing and also likes to wear hoodies or big sweatshirts under her jackets.

When we received the jacket, it was around the end of spring beginning of summer. There were a few wet and chilly mornings. On the first rainy day, my daughter wanted to wear it to school and see how well it would live up to the rain. She stayed dry and sheltered from the wind. Her favourite part of this jacket is the adjustable velcro cuffs which have fingerless gloves under the cuffs.

Gamma Jacket cuff

During the school day, my daughter kept her Gamma jacket on even though it would get quite hot by the afternoon. She said she was comfortable and not hot at all. The jacket helped keep her comfortable. I also think she was afraid that someone would step on it and damage the heat elements.

Since we are in the middle of summer we were only able to test the heat button without wearing the jacket. It heated up quite nicely and she is looking forward to winter when she can really test the heating ability out. She loves to wear hoodies so that will give her an extra layer of warmth just in case it is extremely cold out. Having the drawstrings on the hood and waist also helps keep the elements out.

Conclusion

My daughter loves the heating elements for winter and all the pockets of this Gamma all-season graphene infused heated jacket. She also likes that it keeps her dry in the rain and warm when it is breezy out. If you spend time outside for hours at a time, she recommends that you should have one of your own.

If you are familiar with other top brand clothing then you will have no trouble ordering the size that fits you perfectly, the sizing is on par with them. Here is the size chart to view. This all season jacket currently only comes in the colour black.

10 Top Things to Do in Paris, France

1

Paris attracts around 30 million visitors each year, and is home to some of the most famous and the most recognizable tourist attractions in the world. Here are 10 Top Things to Do in Paris, France!

As capital cities go, Paris is one of the greatest. Rich in history and culture, with world-class shopping, theatres, bars and restaurants, there is something here to suit everyone.

Ten top things to do in Paris

You will find below some ideas to keep the kids happy on a family trip to Paris. When the children don’t want to see one more art museum, church, or fashion boutique, treat them to something that they will enjoy. These are some of the coolest things to do in Paris!

The most famous tourist attractions in Paris are:

1. Jardin du Luxembourg

Jardin du Luxembourg

There are numerous lovely parks in Paris, but very few can beat the Jardin du Luxembourg for a relaxing afternoon. The Luxembourg has a large playground, a marionette theatre, and there is a large circular pool where kids can sail rented wooden sailboats. While parents are appreciating the well manicured gardens and lawns, kids can be on the lookout for a miniature Statue of Liberty, a large Cyclops, and an apiary. If a picnic is in order, grab a bench or some of the green metal chairs. Grass is off limits.

You can get to the Jardin du Luxembourg on the metro, departing at Odeon, or the RER Luxembourg. There are many entrances. You may want to look for Rue de Vaugirard in the 6th arrondissement. It’s open daily from 7:30 am to dusk in the summer and 8:00 am to dusk in the winter.

2. Centre Pompidou

Centre Pompidou in Paris

If you’ve dragged the kids through the modern art exhibit at Centre Pompidou, let them relax on departure at the whimsical fountain at Fontaine Stravinsky right next door. The unusual sculptures spin around and spout water. The view from the square, in front of this cultural centre is sure to intrigue, due to the primary colours of the building and the plumbing and air vents on the exterior. Be sure to go to the sixth floor for a superb view of Paris and watch for street entertainers on the plaza in front of the entrance.

Centre Pompidou can be found near the Rambuteau metro station on Rue St. Martin in the 4th arrondissement.

3. Les Catacombes de Paris

Although not recommended for the faint-hearted or claustrophobic child or parent, this has been some brave kiddos’ favourite site in Paris. After marching down 130 steps to the passages below the city, you can view the skeletons from corpses that were deposited here in 1785, when public burial spots were overflowing. Six million bodies were transferred to the Catacombes at the time. Dress warmly and expect to spend around 45 minutes visiting the site.

Les Catacombes de Paris are open every day from 9.45 am until 8:30 pm, except Mondays and holidays. To get to the Catacombes, take the Denfert Rochereau exit from the metro or RER. The address is 1 avenue du Colonel Henri Rol-Tanguy in the 14th arrondissement.

4. The Eiffel Tower

Eiffel Tower

The Eiffel Tower, located on the Champ de Mars, was designed and built for the 1889 World Expo by Gustave Eiffel. Initially hated by Parisians, the tower came within a whisker of being torn down after the exposition. Today, the tower is one of the most well-known tourist attractions in the world, with around 7 million visitors each year. Of the three visitor levels, the lower two both feature restaurants, one of which, Le Jules Verne, boasts a Michelin Star. The Eiffel Tower is open 365-days; it is advisable to book advance tickets, which can be done via the official website.

5. The Louvre

The Louvre can be found on the South Bank of the river Seine. It was originally a French fortress that was turned into a public museum after the French Revolution. It is today one of the largest and most famous museums in the world, with over 30000 exhibits on show at any one time. The Louvre is home to some the most important works of art in existence, including the Mona Lisa, Venus De Milo and the Winged Victory. The Louvre is open every day except Tuesdays. To avoid the queues, purchase advance tickets from the museum’s website.

10 Top Things to Do in Paris, France

6. Notre Dame De Paris Cathedral

Notre Dame Cathedral stands on the Île de la Cité, a small island in the heart of Paris. Founded in the 12th century, this magnificent building is widely considered to be one of the greatest examples of French Gothic architecture. Notre Dame is an integral part of the history of the city – thousands prayed here before leaving to fight in the Crusades, and Napoleon was crowned here. The Cathedral reliquary contains some of the most precious religious artefacts of the Passion, including part of the crown of thorns and a fragment of the cross upon which Jesus was crucified. At the top of the 223ft North Tower you can see Paris as Quasimodo did, and visit the famous gargoyles.

Since the fire at Notre-Dame de Paris Cathedral on April 15, 2019, the building and its surroundings have been closed to the public. Nevertheless, you can contemplate the Cathedral or to take a picture of it from the small streets of the Île de la Cité, the bridges of the Seine, the quays on the left bank and the Île Saint Louis. The walk remains a magical and memorable moment.

7. Père-Lachaise Cemetery

The final resting place of great luminaries such as Oscar Wilde, Maria Callas, Chopin, Edith Piaf and Jim Morrison, Père-Lachaise Cemetry makes for a fascinating, if slightly unusual trip. Père-Lachaise is situated in the 20th arrondissement, in North-East Paris. The cemetery is known as la cité des morts – the city of the dead – by Parisians, an affectionate term for this beautiful and haunting corner of the city. Among the 5000 trees and miles of winding paths, lie the remains of over 1 million people. The graves here range from simple, unassuming headstones, to gargantuan monoliths and even small chapels dedicated to the cemetery’s more well-known residents. Pick up a location map from one of the principal entrances to the cemetery or from one of the florists nearby.

8. Musee D’Orsay in Paris

The Musée D’Orsay sits on the north bank of the River Seine. Holding mainly French art from the 1840’s until 1915 including paintings, sculptures, decorative arts and photography, the museum is most well known for its vast collection of impressionist and post-impressionist works – the largest collected works of such masterpieces in the world. Entire rooms are dedicated to the great masters and contain some of the world’s great art treasures, including Sunflowers, by Van Gogh, Card Players, by Cezanne, and Whistler’s Mother, by James McNeil Whistler. The Musée D’Orsay is open from 9.30 am until 6 pm, with late night opening until 9:45 pm on Thursdays. The museum is closed on Mondays.

9. Montmartre

Basilica of Sacré-Coeur

The Montmartre area of Paris sits on a hill to the north of the city. It is to Paris what the West Village is to New York – bohemian, artisan, quirky, and a little naughty! Home to great artists such as Dali Monet and Picasso, Montmartre is one of Paris’s most vibrant neighbourhoods, attracting tourists from around the world who come to soak up the unique atmosphere and wander the cobbled streets. Montmartre is home to the Basilica of Sacré-Coeur (the big white church on top of the hill!) and the world-famous Moulin Rouge cabaret club, birthplace of the can-can, instantly recognizable by the red windmill on its roof.

10. Paris Arc de Triomphe

Paris Arc de Triomphe

In 1806, It was Napoleon Bonaparte that commissioned the Arc Triomphe. It was to celebrate the military achievements of the French armies after the great victory at the Battle of Austerlitz (1805). The Arc de Triomphe was inaugurated in 1836 by French king, Louis-Philippe, who dedicated it to the armies of the Revolution and the Empire. This is where the Unknown Soldier was buried at the base of the arch in 1921. The flame of remembrance is rekindled every day at 18:30. Paris Arc of Triomphe is open daily and is situated at Place de l’Étoile at the top of the Champs-Élysées.

What to do in Paris

There are so many places to visit in Paris: too many to mention in a single article. However, the above are some of the major tourist attractions in Paris that should be on your ‘to do’ list. But to get the most from your trip, why not invest in a Paris Museum Pass, which will give you access to over 50 museums and monuments in Paris and the Paris region. You buy a pass for either 2, 4 or 6 days and then you are free to visit as many places as you like, as many times as you like, within the specified time frame. Included in the Paris Museum Pass are the Louvre, the Musee D’Orsay, the Arc de Triomphe, and Musée Picasso-Paris, and many more!

10 Tips for Raising Great Kids

2

Great kids are indeed a source of pride and joy to their parents. To most parents, raising great kids specifically entails ensuring that their kids turn out to be successful and happy, physically strong and healthy, mentally agile and intelligent and morally responsible and productive adults. This indeed is the essence of good parenting.

Raising Great Kids

Parenting today, is certainly not easy; there are no perfect rules or perfect parents. There will be ups and downs, tears and laughter, joys and sorrows. Raising kids alone can be even more challenging. Being a single parent means having the sole responsibility of your child and can definitely result in added pressure, stress, and fatigue. However, parents, who consistently convey a sense of genuine caring to their children, would have a greater chance of raising great kids. By following a couple of easy steps and staying committed, parents can ultimately realize their goal of raising great kids.

Raising Great Kids

Here are 10 simple tips for raising great kids!

Tip 1: Begin early to raise great kids

Timing is crucial! It would be best to begin planning the process as early as possible in your child’s life. Whatever your parenting style, it would be in your child’s interest, to get on the same page with the co-parent-either in a two-parent home or single-parent home, if you are sharing responsibility with your ex-spouse. Having a common shared goal would make the task so much easier.

Tip 2: Keep Healthy

Health is an important factor contributing to your family’s well-being. Good health results in a healthy state of mind, body and outlook. Teach your child to eat balanced meals and exercise regularly. This habit can contribute greatly to keeping your kid in top working condition. Good health – physical, mental and emotional, triggers good behaviour and that is the prime quality which every great kid should have.

Tip 3: Mind your attitude

Parents would do great by adopting a positive attitude. Your perspective and habit of thinking will determine how you see, feel and communicate with your kids. Inspire clear, positive thoughts in your kids and transmit clear, positive messages-which can ultimately enhance your kid’s life.

Tip 4: Instil Values in order to raise great kids

Kids thrive when parents take time to instil core values like honesty, integrity, faith, and a sense of caring in their lives. Raising great kids require commitment and careful handling on the part of parents. Setting firm and clear rules in the form of guidelines can bring a sense of security and stability in your kid’s life.

Tip 5: Focus on Nurturing

Focus on nurturing your child’s potential; find out what your child is good at. The direction of your kid’s life will largely depend on the choices you will help him/her to make and contribute to your child’s future successes. Aim high!

Tip 6: Raise Great kids by Building Confidence

Kids love when parents demonstrate confidence in their ability and encourage their efforts. You can build your child’s self-confidence by praising your child’s accomplishments. Each successful skill and milestone in your kid’s life can boost their sense of competence and provide the necessary incentive to take on new challenges.

Tip 7: Teach Responsibility

Teach your kids to take on responsibility, to do chores, take on responsibility and contribute in the family’s household. Allow and encourage them to make their own decisions and have a firm grip on handling the consequences of their behaviour and actions.

Tip 8: Give Respect

Respect is a two-way happening; your kids deserve your respect as much as you deserve theirs. It is also important to teach your kids to respect others and equally important is to teach them the value of self-respect. When your kids see you respecting yourself, you automatically model to them the value of self-respect and how you expect to be treated.

Tip 9: Practice Forgiveness

Forgiveness helps you to move on and will teach your kids a valuable lesson. It will teach your kids not to hold on to anger, hurt or bitterness but move on ahead with a lightness of heart. This does not imply by-passing your kid’s wrong-doing; however, it simply implies that unconditional love for your child, prompts you to forgive your child.

Tip 10: Set an Example

It is important that you set a good example to your kids. Remember, you are being watched, listened to and emulated. Your kids trust you implicitly. You can empower your kid to make good decisions, be self-reliant and behave responsibly.

10 Tips for Raising Great Kids

Conclusion

You can yield the most powerful influence on your kids. By following the above ten tips on raising kids, you can teach your kids some valuable lessons and consequently raise great kids.

Tigris at Busch Gardens Tampa Bay

Where is busch gardens located?

The Busch Gardens Theme Park is located in Tampa Bay, 100 miles SW of Orlando, Florida. Busch Gardens address is 10165 N McKinley Dr. and the theme park is approximately 8 miles northeast of downtown Tampa. This is a unique location as it is very close to the beautiful beaches on the Gulf Coast of Florida and also just two hours away from Disney World, Sea World, and the other theme parks in Orlando.

The animal viewing opportunities

In the Serengeti Plains, you can view hippos, lions, rhinos, white Bengal tigers and more. There is also the Myombe Reserve’s Great Apes area, which has chimpanzees and gorillas. The African and North African architecture is superb, right down to the last detail. There are special tours that take you right among the animals, both on the Serengeti Plains and the Rhino Rally on the river. Here is a preview of the animals from the Busch Gardens Site.

A fun area for younger children is the Sesame Street Safari of Fun. This area has the furry stars of the well-known television program as well as a kiddie-sized coaster, jeep rides, interactive play areas, and a live show all geared for the preschool crowd. They can also join the Sesame characters at certain breakfast and lunch seatings.

Roller coasters rides at Busch Gardens

Your family will love these rides:

  • The Busch Gardens Montu, an inverted coaster
  • The Busch Gardens Kumba, a steel multi-element coaster

Busch gardens water park

Be prepared to get soaked at the Stanley Falls Flume. If you wish for something a bit less dousing there is the Congo River Rapids. If you prefer water slides, pools and lazy rivers, hop over to the Adventure Island!

Dining

Dining at Busch Gardens is said to be a step above the fare of the typical theme park. The 3 restaurants that I prefer are the famous Chick-fil-A®, the Zambia Smokehouse that offers barbecue ribs, brisket, and much more, as well as the Dragon Fire Grill & Pub that serves family-friendly menus with exciting live entertainment.

Busch Gardens All-Day Dining

An all-Day dining deal is available at Busch Gardens and includes 1 entrée platter, side or dessert and one fountain soft drink or 1 Dasani bottled water once every 90 minutes at any of the 5 following locations:

  • Zagora Café
  • Oasis Pizza at Serengeti Overlook
  • Dragon Fire Grill
  • Zambia Smokehouse
  • Chick-fil-A®

Tickets to busch gardens

Busch Gardens is open year round, but operating days and hours vary. The park often has specials and discounted prices for advance on-line ticket purchases. This also includes special annual pass tiers. If you know you are going to be in the area for more than a weekend, you can purchase a Fun Card with unlimited visits to both Busch Gardens Tampa Bay and/or Adventure Island throughout the year. You can also purchase two, three or four park tickets at any combination of their theme parks: SeaWorld Orlando, Aquatica Orlando, Busch Gardens Tampa Bay, and Adventure Island. 0

Looking for a traveller’s guide to sleeping in airports? Look no further. The following article is filled to the very brim with a host of information. Read on to learn all you need to know about where to sleep, what to pack, napping rooms, hotels, and so much more.

There are a plethora of reasons for sleeping in airports, these cover early morning flights, early arrivals, large gaps between layovers, flight delays, cancellations and so much more. Perhaps you are travelling on a budget and are attempting to save on accommodation fees. Chances are you know someone who has slept in an airport or you have done this yourself.

Sleeping in airports is a good way of saving money and having a rest at the same time. It’s very safe as well. The old adage “There is safety in numbers,” is so true, the more people around you, the safer you should be. Sleeping in airports is not a safety risk, nor does it need to be an uncomfortable experience. The chance of personal body harm is very limited due to the major increase in airport security these days.

Sleeping In Airports

Read the top tips below about sleeping in airports which you will surely find them beneficial.

Be prepared

First and foremost, be prepared for the unexpected and pack a carry-on. Pack a sleeping kit which includes a blow-up neck cushion and a warm blanket in case the temperatures drop. Remember to pack your toothbrush and a sample size bottle of mouthwash as well as a travel grooming kit. You may wish to pack an Ipad, reading material, hand held game, laptop/notebook, crossword books, magazines, knitting etc, to amuse yourself before you nod off.

It’s a good idea to pack a sample size bottle of hand sanitizer and small hand towel as well. If you don’t wish to lug a pillow around, wrap a jacket around a small travel bag, this will act as a pillow. You can also use a rolled up skirt, pair of jeans etc. If you forget to take your toothbrush grab a sachet of salt from the bistro area of the airport and rub the salt across your teeth with your finger, the salt will clean your teeth very well.

Airport Nap and resting rooms

Numerous airports have designated areas for those who wish to enjoy a short nap. In actual fact, Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson Airport lets you rent rooms by the hour. Therefore you can nap in safety, without leaving the airport. This is nothing new, day rooms are available in many airports across the USA. To reserve a room simply visit minutesuites.com and reserve your room online. The mini hotel is easily found on concourse B just outside gate 15. The cost is approximately $48 for the first hour then $12 each fifteen minutes after that. For those who wish to rent the room for 8 hours or more, a discount is given. There are not many of these rooms available so be sure to make an early reservation.

Other airports such as Changi, Singapore, offer napping rooms by the hour as well, the cost depends on the amount of space and the extras you request. For those who are hoping to save money, there are often resting areas which are free to use as well. The resting chairs are quite comfortable.

Airport Hotels

There are airport hotels that offer comfort as well as varied luxuries such as a showers, sleeping areas and relaxation areas. You can find a great number of hotels in airports all around the globe. For a fee, they provide you with all that you need to make you travels most enjoyable.

You can get some shut eye at Vancouver International Airport

If you wish to sleep here, ensure that you head right down to the USA departures area. You will find it much quieter there and much more comfortable. The Fairmont Vancouver Airport Hotel which is located inside the airport offers day rate. Just store your bags at the CDS Baggage Storage which is easily found in the International Terminal near the Tim Hortons (lower level) or at the Domestic Terminal which is right beside the baggage carousels.

Airport Lounges, bars, and clubs

Bars, clubs, and lounges are a good option for relaxation or a quick nap. Most of these are reasonably quiet in comparison to the hustle and bustle of the general transit areas of an airport. A host of airports have these and the drinks, dining and rest options are great. The downside is that they are not free but the cost is very minimal.

Sleeping in the general flight waiting area

Some may moan and groan about sleeping where other travellers can see them, others couldn’t care less. Sleeping in airports is not always an option it’s a must, so ensure that your clothes are not tight. They should be comfortable and give you freedom to move. Your shoes should be comfortable as well and many travellers often kick off their shoes, so don’t be shy. Bring your own pillow if you must, but remember that you will be toting it everywhere you go until you reach your destination. You will no doubt experience hunger pains sooner or later, so pack something to nibble on but ensure that it is nothing which is vetoed by airport security.

where to sleep in airports

Where to sleep in airports

Now choose your sleeping area such as a corner of the airport waiting room which is out of harms way and not in any draft, either the floor or a chair. Sleeping propped up against a can be much more comfortable than laying down on a hard floor. Ensure that no one can trip over your legs. If you don’t feel safe move somewhere else. Tuck your wallet, shoulder bag, clutch purse etc into your shirt or blouse. Pull a visor cap over your eyes to block out the lights. Any personal identification should be kept upon your body nor stored in a locker, place the key on a necklace. Chain around your neck or in your front pocket or your bra.

Look about and see if anyone else is on their own. It would be wise to take a nap close to them, that way you can both give each other a little moral support if needed. Who knows, you may even make a life-long friend.

Tips for sleeping in an airport

If you are concerned about missing your flight while you are in the land-of-nod, you can arrange to have a steward to wake you up with most airlines. They will wake you before the boarding call, so don’t panic. Tell them where you intend to sleep. Travellers would be wise to have a watch with an alarm clock or set their mobile phone to wake them. Approach sleeping in the airport with anger and so forth, you will only increase your anxiety and blood-pressure. Some things are unavoidable. Hum to yourself, whistle softly, do whatever it takes to keep your stress levels down. Bring a pack of cards and play single handed poker or other card games. This will help you pass the time.
