Santa Matching Game with Printables

9

Playing a matching game is a great way for your child to gain memory skills and have fun at the same time. There’s no reason to spend money on games like this, when there are so many free printables available online. This Santa matching game fits right in with the spirit of the holiday. Kids will have fun matching Santa Claus, Christmas trees, snowflakes and even Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.

My suggestion is to print out the pieces on card stock. If you don’t have any handy and don’t feel like running out to get it, try this instead. To keep the cards from ripping, cover them on both sides with clear packing tape. This will make the game pieces last longer.

There are actually lots of benefits to playing memory games… and not just when it comes to children. People of all ages can improve memory skills and vocabulary in a non-stressful manner. These games also help to increase one’s attention to detail and improve concentration.

The most common way to play this type of game is to place all the cards face-down on a table or other flat surface. Instruct you child to pick a card, look at it and lay it back down. Ask them to repeat the process until they find all the matches.

If you have younger kids, you may want to try this instead. Separate the cards and two identical sets. Place one face up-on the table. Show your child one card at a time and ask him (or her) to give you the matching card from the table.

It’s so important to keep your kids educationally stimulated, even during the holidays. So, why not take the time to print out this Santa matching game and breakout the Christmas cookies and yummy hot chocolate? Remember, there’s never a bad time to promote learning fun!

Food. For many people, it is not clear how food gets from the farm to their grocery store. There are many discrepancies as to how the meat and produce we eat is treated before we consume it. Farm and Food Care Ontario‘s aim is to help people become more informed about the food they eat, from farm to table. This organization held their Fall Food Tour. I was invited to get up close and personal with a few of the local farms around Ottawa that produce food we buy for our families.

Hanging out with chicks

The first stop on our tour was to the Grenier/Bourdon Family Farm. We had the opportunity to tour their newest barn, built in 2017, to see how the chicks at this broiler chicken farm (chickens raised for meat) live.

Getting Up Close and Personal with Food with Farm and Food Care Ontario
Barn and truck in a driveway.

We learned that Canada is 14th largest grower of chickens in the world. There are about 2 800 broiler families in Canada. With all of these chicken broiler farms, Canadians eat about 33 kilograms of chicken per year. That is a great demand for these farms to fill.

At the time of our visit, the chicks in this barn were teenagers. They were about 13 days old. We learned that chicks on a chicken broiler farm arrive here on the first day they are born and leave 40 days later.

Chicken fun

Before entering the broiler chicken barn, we got dressed to the nines. Each of us on the tour wore a protective suit and booties to prevent cross contamination of disease for us and the chicks.

Once inside, we found out about the controls for the barn. We discovered how each barn is strictly cleaned every time a new set of chicks inhabits the barn. The climate and other factors can be controlled by the panel outside of the chick enclosure.

When we entered the inner barn, it was a sea of chicks as far as the eye could see. Approximately 27 000 birds live in the barn at a time. Fresh food and water is fed to the birds to eat. We were able to see the cute and soft down feathers alongside the longer, whiter adult feathers growing on these birds. It was interesting to see how these chicks lived with each other.

Local lunch delight

Once we said our goodbyes to our feathered friends, we travelled to Ferme Drouin for a buffet lunch featuring a delicious seasonal and local menu. From the Cold Salad Bar and Hot Buffet Options to the scrumptious Dessert Bar, our lunch really hit the spot!

My favourite part of the meal had to be the Dessert Bar. We were able to assemble our own Housemade Beavertails. There was a selection of toppings and seasonal sauces to choose from that would make any die-hard fan of this Canadian treat’s head spin. Three types of local goat’s milk ice cream were also available to increase the deliciousness of this part of the meal.

Picking some fun

To work off our lunch, our next stop was to Avonmore Berry Farm. Our group was on a tour of the farm and market by the owners, the Philips family and their dogs to see their diversified fruit and vegetable farm.

An array of fruits and vegetables that were grown on this farm. The crops are rotated each year in order to preserve the nutrients within the soil. Protective plastic is used to cover the soil and roots of particular crops. It is used for two years before it needs to be replaced. The Philips family also buy seeds for their crops from different sources each season in order to make sure they have a success growing season.

One of the best learning experiences we had while on Avonmore Berry Farm was amongst the Brussel sprouts. We were able to learn just how hearty these veggies can be. Our group got hands-on with the stalks of Brussel sprouts left in the field. We were able to see how difficult it was to remove these round veggies from the stalk by hand without a knife.

It took me about eight seconds to release this veg from its stalk. The Philips family and their seasonal works are able to fill eight bushels a day each. Let me tell you, I would not be able to meet this demand without a lot more practice.

Berry fun

We also got to see their fabulous strawberry and raspberry crops. Easier to pick than the Brussel sprouts, they were delicious to sample. The Philips family dog was happy to guide us around this part of the farm, snacking on the leftover fruits of the season as she showed off the fields.

We then popped into The Pantry, Avonmore Berry Farm’s market. Sweet treats such and jams, pies, muffins, scones and other delectable baked goods are for sale to visitors to the farm. Many of the ingredients for these goods are grown on the farm. There was so much to want to see, many of us boarded the bus with their wares to take home to enjoy.

A fabulous up close and personal experience

Farm and Food Care tours are always an amazing tour to experience. We were able to have our questions answered about the food we eat from the people who grow it and other experts. Seeing where our food comes from is important because you can see the process of how meat or produce goes from a certain point to another up close and personal. Being hands-on with food and produce also helped us become more appreciative of the work that goes into producing the food we purchase. It was a fabulous day of learning I will not soon forget.

Chicken Sheet Pan Nachos

31

Over the past year or so, sheet pan meals have become super popular. They’re quick to prepare, without much effort. This tasty sheet pan nachos with chicken is just one example, perfect for when you’re craving Mexican food at the end of a hectic day or while watching the big game!

One of the good things about a nachos recipe like this one is that you can easily substitute or leave off an ingredient you don’t care for. You can also add in extras, if you so choose. Green and/or black olives, anyone? This sheet pan chicken nachos recipe is also ideal to make on May 5th for Cinco De Mayo.

How to make the nachos

The key to success with something like this is to thoroughly drain the liquid from both the beans and corn. If you don’t, you’ll end up with a soggy mess underneath. It’s better to use a strainer as opposed to simply draining the liquid out of the can.

Sheet Pan Nachos
Chicken sheet pan Nachos

This sheet pan chicken nachos recipe calls for plain tortilla chips. However, feel free to use your favourite brand and flavour, to spice things up a bit. Leftover chicken is perfect for your easy-to-make nachos. But, there’s nothing that says you can’t use ground beef or even spicy sausage instead. Go ahead and live a little!

If you’re prone to crying when cutting onions, try this. Run cold water over both halves for approximately 30 seconds, before dicing or chopping. No more tears!

Some people aren’t fond of the taste of cilantro. In fact, many of the same people think it tastes like soap. If you decide to leave it out of the recipe, for whatever reason, no worries! You’ll still end up with a sheet pan of yummy nachos that will have everyone coming back for more.

Chicken Sheet Pan Nachos Recipe

You can just as easily double this chicken sheet pan nachos recipe for a party, or shrink in half for one or two people. Leftover nachos are generally not the best. So, it’s recommended you only make enough for one meal.

Disney Pin Trading Basics

Disney Pin Trading Basics

Countless Disney lovers collect and trade Disney pins. It is an affordable and exciting hobby that’s easy to do at home or while you’re visiting your favourite Disney park. Quite honestly, for many, it’s an obsession. Here are a few of the basics, when it comes to Disney pin trading. Hopefully, the information helps you decide if this enjoyable hobby is for you.

What Are Disney Pins?

Disney trading pins are a collectible souvenir. You buy these pins from Disney stores and trade them with cast members or other park guests in exchange for pins you don’t have or want extras of. The tradition started during the Millennium Celebration and continues to be popular to this day. In fact, collectible pins are now the most popular merchandise items, sold at Disney parks.

The only pins available for honest trading are official Disney pins with the pin back undamaged and attached. Be aware of and avoid purchasing “scrapper pins,” which are unauthorized overrun pins produced mostly in China. These pins are actually confiscated illegally off of the discard pile, in effort to be sold by shady third-party sources. They are most often sold in bulk.

Where Can I Get Pins?

There are a number of locations to find Disney pins for sale all over Walt Disney World. In the Magic Kingdom, head to the Main Street Emporium or the World of Disney at Disney Springs. These stores carry the newest pins for around $9 USD. A starter set which includes a lanyard and 4 pins goes for $29.99 USD.

Special events usually have their own limited edition sets of pins to collect, like Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party, Food & Wine or Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party.

Who Do I Trade With?

Finding people to trade pins with is simple. You can either trade with cast members who are wearing pins or other guests who are willing to swap. Either way, look for people who have their pins displayed proudly on a sash or lanyard. For first time traders it’s best to trade with cast members and to build up your collection.

What Should I Trade For?

Ultimately, the decision of pins to trade for is entirely up to you. Many guests decide to collect sets of pins that go together, such as all the pins associated with a certain Disney film or park attraction. Other collectors may be trying for one pin of every Disney character. Make a list of a few Disney-related subjects that interest you so that you have a better idea of specific pins to look for.

How Should I Display Them?

The most popular way to display pins while walking around the park is on a lanyard. In fact, you can buy lanyards for this purpose alone at the Main Street Emporium and several other shops and boutiques.

However, there’s really no end to the ways to display them. You can keep them on a backpack or on the brim of a hat. Make sure to display them in a place that’s easily visible so other collectors know that you’re willing to trade.

Also, make sure you put them in a place that’s in reach (at all times) while in the park. You never know when a cast member will go by with that pin you have been looking for.

Now that you know a little bit about collecting and trading Disney pins, does the thought of doing so excite you? If so, go for it! You have nothing to lose and an enjoyable hobby to gain.

How To Stay Fit In The Fall Months

17

Depending on where you live, the fall season will bring cooler weather. The long, hot days of summer are ending, and for many, this is a better time to get out and enjoy the great fall weather. It might also be a good time to be more active outdoors. If it was too hot for you to exercise and enjoy activities outside in the summer, the fall season may bring just what you need to get fit, active and stay healthy. Here are some tips on how to stay fit in the fall months!

How to Stay Fit in the Fall Months

So many of us are thinking about getting back into our fitness routines after taking some time off in the summer. The gyms are busy again and many are transitioning to indoor activities and strength training. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed especially if you’ve taken an extended break from indoor workouts. How can you stay fit in the fall?

Know what motivates you

Is it a race, signing up for a class, working out with a buddy or tracking your workouts online? Find out what works best for you and set goals. Write them down and reward yourself along the way.

Go for walks

It sounds simple because it is. Really, just taking a nice walk in the fall weather for as long or as short as you can, based on your health and ability. You can bring a friend or the family to enjoy it with you. Simply walking every day can keep you stay fit.

Take advantage of the weather and beautiful sights (think: hike in the Gatineau park, bike ride along the river, more comfortable running/walking weather). Bring the camera to capture the beautiful sights!

Be choosy with your treats

Many will gain weight between Thanksgiving and Christmas. Set a limit ahead of time, indulge in moderation and buy Halloween candy that you don’t like. If you like chocolate, purchase plain chips and raisins – you’ll be less likely to indulge. Keep the box sealed and hidden away until Halloween day! Better yet, buy your treats the day before.

Work out 1st thing in the morning

Prepare your workout gear the night before and set 15-30 minutes aside when you wake up (before you’re brain tells you no). It can be as simple as a brisk walk around the neighbourhood. Fifteen minutes of moderate intensity exercise (such as brisk walking) can decrease mortality by up to 14% which = 3 year longer life.

Go to the beach

If you live close enough, consider going to the beach. Just because Labor Day is behind you doesn’t mean you can’t go play for a day with your kids. The crowds have usually all moved out by this point and you will get most of the beach to yourself.

How to Stay Fit in the Fall Months
Fall scenery

Play a game

Do you like sports? Enjoy shooting hoops with the family, play some soccer or tossing a Frisbee? Fall can be a great time of year to play some games. Since it’s not usually as hot, but the weather is still warm enough to enjoy, get out there and get active.

Chores

Make your chores active: Rake, weed, prepare your garden for winter and sneak in a few extra squats to stay fit this fall.

Workout during commercials

With the average hour long program, you’ll be able to sneak in up to 13 minutes of exercise. Here are some things you can do off the couch on the commercials: 15 Squats, 15 push ups (wall, knees or toes) and a 30 second plank (knees or toes). Repeat during three sets of commercial breaks and voila! Mini workout done.

How to Stay Fit in the Fall Months

Clean up the yard

Are the leaves starting to fall off the trees yet? This can be a great time to rake the leaves and start cleaning it all up. It gives you a great fall workout since raking and bagging leaves can burn as much as 200 to 300 calories an hour. Get the family involved too!

You can also try a new activity this fall, sign up for a class, hire a qualified trainer if you need help. Experiment with new classes and try something different. With these tips in mind, you can get the exercise you need and stay healthy and fit throughout the fall months.

Playbomil Lucky’s Happy Home – Review

Friendship. This is one of the main themes behind the Dreamworks series “Spirit: Riding Free.” It is a series based on a girl named Lucky. She moves to the countryside in Miradero with her father, Jim, Aunt Cora, and horse, Spirit. They live in a beautiful ranch house where Lucky and Spirit have fun adventures with her new friends. Playmobil Canada has added this series to their line of amazing playsets. They asked our family if we would like to see if we could ride to fun with their Lucky’s Happy Home playset! Since my kids are fans of this Playmobil series, they could not wait to play with it!

Boy planing with Lucky and Spirit.

The aspect that gets me with this Playmobil set is the detail that is put into the set. Objects such as the window frames, curtains, and the porch lights could have easily been painted on the house or printed as stickers. Instead, they are actual pieces that stick out, making this house come more to life.

Aunt Cora on porch of playset.

Other special touches are the accessories. The dishware, the glasses, and the pie are simple things that add to the fun of this playhouse. Even the animals are so cute! I had fun placing the bird and the mouse in different spots around the house to increase the amusement my kids and I were having with this set.

Some things to consider…

I know I spoke about the amount of detail Playmobil put into this set, but there were a few things I wish would have been included into Lucky’s Happy Home. I wish there would have been a few pieces of furniture in the upper rooms for a bedroom soit would really feel like a complete home. The only other thing I would have liked to have added to this playset would have been a figure of Lucky’s Dad, Jim. It would have been great to have all of Lucky’s family at home.

Riding into fun

Overall, my kids and I really enjoyed playing with Playmobil Canada’s Lucky’s Happy Home playset! It was simple to put together, and so much fun to play with. The care that the designers put into this home was amazing. It helped to transport kids into Lucky’s world. This playset would be a fabulous gift idea whether you are a fan of this series or want a playset to adventure in! It is a favourite for our kids to let their imaginations ride free.

Getting Spooky at Saunders Farm

Halloween is approaching and there is no better place to be to get into the spooky spirit than Saunders Farm! I recently posted about their summer time activities, but Halloween is where they take it to the next level.

It’s a new tradition that we take the whole family to Saunders on Thanksgiving Monday. It’s perfect since most businesses are closed and we like to get out after a big meal. Their haunting season takes lots of prep so kudos to all the organizers who make this happen year after year.

Since my guys are little, I went in with my hubby to the first little spooky stop while my mom and mother in law watched the kids. Good thing I had my iPhone flashlight on me because it really was spooky (did I mention this was DAYTIME activities, so I cannot imagine Frightfest at night)! It was so well done, we had some pretty scary people pop out giving us mild heart attacks.

Up next was Farmer Bill’s Treehouse which is the main playground area when you arrive. Bales of hay to play and jump in, little climbing structures, tire swing, and more. So fun! Then we headed to the Discover Barn where they have cute little slides and a huge sensory bin with corn and toys for the kids to play around with.

Right next to the Discovery Barn is a tractor and little train that the kids had fun climbing on, but it was time to head over to the stage for a little show. Sometimes they have puppet shows and this time it was a spooky play. The kids loved it!

Have I mentioned the food yet? Saunders Farm truly has amazing hamburgers! But if you feel like being healthier there are some great options on the other side, and they also have a delicious chili, and mac and cheese. Of course there are also snack bars with sweet treats like candy apples, popcorn, beavertails and more.

View from the tower (photo by @NaomiBianca613)

After lunch, we headed to the tower where the mazes are. To our dismay, it started to pour rain and unfortunately had to call it a day. And so, we returned the following weekend to tackle the parts that we missed. This time we started with the hayride that leads to the cornmaze, they have two beside each other, the other one is the Haunted Hayride for Kids with “mild scares”. After the wagon ride, they recommend you do the Coven Witch Trail which is super cool (and she’s a friendly witch so no scares)!

Of course Jax raced over to the jumping pillows next. He was so sad last time as it just started raining so we missed out. He had a blast running back and forth and also sitting on it while I jumped around him. “Only gentle jumps mom!”

Off to the famous Pirate Ship Play Structure, and I honestly think they could have been there all day. The mazes at Saunders Farm are incredible. We opted for the Spiral Maze, it’s pretty hard to get lost in that one! After that, we climbed the tower to take in the views. They have a couple fun little games by the mazes that we played for a few minutes. After our bellies were full with delicious food we had to bribe them to leave with a stop for a treat in the Farm Shop & Bakery. We got some cool socks, candy and called it a day.

We can’t wait to get back to the farm again soon. In fact, I think the grownups will be visiting for Fright Fest! We highly recommend a visit before haunting season is over on October 31st!

Are you not sure what to do with all of that terrific leftover turkey from your Thanksgiving meal? You can make this turkey leftovers recipe! Also, have these tips on hand to make the most of them to celebrate Canadian Turkey Month!

10 WAYS TO MAKE THE MOST OF YOUR TURKEY LEFTOVERS

  1. For leftovers, order a turkey that is several pounds bigger than what you need. That way you can be sure to cook once and eat twice, with leftover turkey to spare for additional meals once everyone has had their fill.
  2. Plan for leftovers by allocating 1½ – 2 pounds of turkey per person. This will yield ½ to 1 pound of extra turkey for each person at your table.
  3. Can you freeze turkey leftovers? Leftover turkey freezes well. Store in an airtight container in the freezer for a quick start to weekday meals.
  4. Make a list of your leftover turkey recipes. Add to that list now to have a head start of go-to favourite recipes for the holiday season.
  5. Divide your leftovers into dark and white turkey portions before freezing so it will be easy to choose what works best in your recipes.
  1. Make sure you store your leftovers properly for best results. Shred your turkey or cut it up into slices or cubes and freeze in convenient 1lb meal base portions that are ready to use right from the freezer.
  2. Store your turkey in air-tight, leak-proof containers or plastic bags. Wrap in plastic to avoid freezer burn and you’ll have ready portions on hand.
  3. Make sure you pack your leftovers within 2 hours after cooking to maintain the quality of the food.
  4. Save and freeze the turkey carcass and bones, too. Use these to make a delicious turkey stock that can easily be frozen for use in soups, sauces, gravies and mashed potatoes.
  5. Freeze any leftover gravy in muffin tins or ice cube trays. Once frozen, store in a zip top bag or air tight container and use as needed.

Is it really fall without pumpkins…or a fresh batch of homemade pumpkin puree? It might seem a tad daunting at first to prepare, but it’s actually quite easy if you follow this wonderful baking recipe, no matter your skillset in the kitchen! I’ll admit, even I was wary to tackle on preparing puree from my own kitchen, especially since store-bought cans require no prep-time and no messy countertops or dishes, but trust me: it’s worth it! They linger on light switches, sink faucets, and hand rails. Staying healthy can be hard to so, especially during cold and flu season when germs are waiting to invade our bodies to make us sick.

How to we avoid contracting a cough and colds when germs are lying in wait to be ingested? With the magic combination of soap and water! Do you not feel good about the lunches being served at your child’s school? Many parents don’t. This is why parents turn to packing a lunch for their children. The only problem is that you often run out of ideas. Some kids are content with eating the same sandwich throughout the school year, but other kids want a variety of meals. If your child is protesting against eating one more of your lunches, it’s time to add some more school lunch ideas to your repertoire. You will find below 20 School Lunch Ideas!

One of the easiest things you can do is start using a container that keeps food warm. This opens up lunch options a lot. You can serve everything from soup to chili to spaghetti to hotdogs. Last night’s leftovers can be heated up the next morning and placed in the container for a quick and easy lunch. Another great idea is to make your child’s favourites. For example, if your child loves the little packs that have crackers, meat, and cheese, make them at home. Not only can you make several varieties, but you can also save a lot of money.

Paddling Through Ottawa’s History with Voyageur Canoe Guided Tours

14

Did you know that the Rideau Canal is Ontario’s only UNESCO World Heritage site? There is more to this site than it being known as the world’s longest skating rink. The summer is a great time to venture along this canal and learn its history. Many residents run, stroll and bike on the paths beside this canal. Have you ever wondered what it would be like to travel along this waterway? Parks Canada allows you to Paddle Through Ottawa’s History with Voyageur Canoe Guided Tours. You can take a trip along the Canal and learn more about its history.

Pre-paddle talk

I have not been in a self-propelled boat in a very long time, so I was really excited to paddle along the Canal. Liam and Tara were our guides for this journey. They taught us so much about the Hartwell Locks, the construction of the Canal, and interesting stories about Canada’s history.

Rideau Canal Hartwell Locks.

Before we hit the water, we were given instructions as how to put on our floatation devices, how to paddle and what to expect on this journey.

…and away we go!

Next, it was time to hop into our canoe. Once we were all aboard, we experienced what it is like to be in a boat going through the locks at Hartwell Lockstation. It was so much fun to feel yourself being lowered as the water left the chamber we were in before entering the Canal. Have you ever seen a boat go through the locks? Take look here to watch a Parks Canada canoe go from one lock to another.

We learned that the stones that lined the locks were the original ones from when the Canal was built. There are also several layers of stones to these beautiful walls.

Once out of the Locks, we paddled along this section of the Canal. We could not have asked for a better day to be on the water. Every inch of the scenery is picturesque. All I wanted to do was take pictures of all of the sites around me.

One of our stops was by the Dominion Arboretum. It was a few minutes paddle from the Hartwell Locks, and it is truly a hidden gem along the Canal. As we glided under a foot bridge, it was as if we had entered another world. It was full of lush greenery, and the sounds of birds chirping in the distance.

We learned about some of the history of the Canal and of the people who helped build the Canal as well as some of the notable figures that have helped to propel not only the history of this historic site, but of our country as well.

A man-made beauty

A few minute later, we reached Dow’s Lake. Once more of a swamp, it has been made into a beautiful location for boaters and pedestrians alike to visit. Did you know that the remnants of a causeway are hidden beneath the waters of Dow’s Lake and that Dow’s Lake was pivotal in stopping the Great Fire of 1870?

Our guides also shared the story behind the “Man with Two Hats” monument. A gift from the Netherlands to Canada, it is a replica of a statue in the Netherlands that demonstrates the strong friendship these two countries formed during World War II by helping to liberate Th Netherlands during this conflict. It is a popular fixture in Commissioners Park and is a beautiful feature to visit by boat on Dow’s Lake.

An experience to remember

We had an amazing time on our adventure with Voyageur Canoe Guided Tours. Not only did I learn about all of the history of Canada and of the Rideau Canal, I was also able to take in the natural beauty of this part of Canada’s capital from a new point of view. This experience is a great one for families, friends, and groups to enjoy! It is one of the best ways to learn more about this part of Ottawa and Canada while having fun! It is an experience I will not soon forget!

Furnaces: Renting Versus Owning

11

Furnaces: Renting Versus Owning

When you own a home, a furnace is a must. It would be unimaginable to have a home without one, especially in colder climates—heating your home in winter months goes far beyond simple comfort. The big question surrounding furnaces lately, however, may surprise you: recently, more and more homeowners are trying to decide between renting and owning their furnaces.

Regardless of whether you plan to rent or buy a furnace there are plenty of factors to consider either way. While renting a furnace may not be an option that you’re familiar with, it is becoming a more popular and accessible choice. Both options have advantages and disadvantages, but the best option is different for each unique situation.

Furnaces: Renting Versus Owning
Gas Furnace

Here’s our guide to the ins and outs of renting versus buying a furnace:

Renting A Furnace

When it comes time to replace or install a furnace, some service providers have started offering the option of long-term rentals, or renting to own. The biggest appeal of renting a furnace relates to maintenance. If you choose to rent a furnace, you’re not on the hook for repairs or replacement if issues with the furnace should arise, which is a major benefit. Your provider will take care of all necessary fixes, and should your furnace kick the bucket, your provider will typically replace it without charging you an enormous amount of money—whereas if you owned the furnace, you would be out of luck.

Renting also reduces the up-front cost of furnace purchasing. Instead of paying for the entire cost of the furnace at once, you instead pay affordable monthly installments. For many consumers, this allows them to access a newer and more efficient furnace, because they don’t have to shoulder the whole cost up front.

Of course, renting is not without its cons: the total cost of renting tends to be higher, because you pay a little every month over contracts that can last several years. Also, although service and maintenance are included, you do not get a choice of your service provider, as it will be serviced by whomever holds your contract. If you are thinking about renting, make sure that you go with a service provider you trust from the beginning.

Furnaces: Renting Versus Owning
Furnaces: Renting Versus Owning

Buying A Furnace

Buying a furnace is first and foremost an investment—not just in your own comfort, but also in the value of your home. Having a permanent, fully-owned furnace is something that can have a significant impact on property value. Renting does not have the same positive ramifications, although thankfully furnace rental contracts are easy to transfer to a new homeowner should the need arise. And while buying a furnace is a savvy investment, it is inherently riskier, as repairs and maintenance will not automatically be covered by the provider from whom you purchased your unit. The most sensible way to mitigate that risk is to choose a provider who offers protection plans or warranties that will keep your investment safe in the event of an unforeseen breakdown.

If you’re planning on staying in a home long-term, renting may be the more attractive option for its security and convenience. If you’re not sure how long you’ll be in a home, purchasing may provide better property value. Any homeowner who wants to know more about furnaces should speak to a trusted service provider—as experts, they will be able to help you make a choice that you’re comfortable with and that will benefit both you and your home over the long-term.
