What To Do After A Loved One Passes Away

0

Dealing with bereavement after a person close to you passes away, even if it was expected, can be devastating emotionally.

While processing your loved one’s will is very important, or worrying about how to go about the process if they died without a will, as both require your utmost caution- preferably with a legal professional. It’ll only become a factor worth considering once you take care of a few other things first.

This article outlines some of the steps you’ll need to cover from the moment your loved one passes away to the day the estate administration is completed.

Hours After The Loss

Soon after losing a loved one, naturally, you most likely won’t know what to do and say. If you feel shocked and overwhelmed, don’t worry too much, it’s only normal in your situation.

Pause for a little bit and breath before starting some of the steps listed below:

1. Get A Death Pronouncement

If the deceased passed away in a nursing home or a hospital with a doctor on board, the staff can take care of the majority of the immediate needs. A hospice nurse will declare your loved one dead if they passed on at home while under assisted elderly care.

One of the first things you should prioritise that’ll help you in obtaining a death certificate is to make an official declaration of death. If the deceased passed away at home, particularly if it was sudden, it’s best to have them pronounced dead by a doctor as soon as possible. Dial 911 the soonest to have them taken to an emergency department to be pronounced dead and transferred to a parlour.

2. Inform Your Friends And Family

Think of other close family members and friends who should know that their loved one has passed away. Look for any contacts to help you determine who should be notified. Inform colleagues and members of all social communities or churches that the person was a member of.

You can also request that the people let other people know by informing someone who is connected or otherwise related to the deceased. You could try posting the death on your or their social media accounts for a wider reach. Some might even volunteer to help buying funeral flowers to ease the burden you’re going through.

A Few Days Into Mourning

After a few days have passed you may now begin some of the processes that are best done at this stage. These include:

1. Make Preparations For The Funeral, Burial, Or Cremation

Examine the documents available to see if the deceased was subscribed to any burial package or whole life insurance. If they weren’t, you’ll have to choose a funeral service and deal with other responsibilities. These include deciding where the funeral wake will be held, where the body or ashes will be buried if you chose to go the cremation route, and what sort of urn or tombstone to order. It’s advisable to research how much the funeral might cost so that you can make an educated decision.

Try to get as much assistance as possible. Make arrangements for friends and relatives to serve a different range of tasks such as being pallbearers, helping arrange the funeral service to lending a hand in purchasing funeral flowers. Organize any meeting you’ll need to have with the deceased’s closest family and friends after the funeral.

In addition, you can request that an obituary be written by a family member or friend who is a great writer.

2. Protect Their Property

Take measures to protect your loved one’s house and car. Someone will have to be responsible for taking care of the deceased loved one’s small garden, collecting their mail, and disposing of all perishables in the house in general. Protect the deceased’s personal properties. Ask that a colleague or family member take care of most of the tasks. Keep any valuable items such as jewellery pieces and money in a safe for good measure.

3. Take Care Of Pets

Put pets with a trusted family member, preferably one who already has pets. If the deceased’s loved one’s pet is hypoallergenic, then they can be taken by anyone who’s willing. It’s best if their pets are properly taken care of until they can be moved somewhere permanently like another foster home or an animal shelter.

These are some of the things people can usually overlook in the rush of things. Yet this is very important because that pet was an intimate part of your loved one’s life. In their remembrance, take care of them well.

4. Make Sure Mail Is Forwarded

The last thing you want is for a heap of mails piling at your loved one’s door unattended. If you think they might receive mail, you can head to the local post office and have them redirected to your address instead.

While your loved one’s already gone, it’s courteous to not make it obvious that the house is uninhabited. You can express your love and grief by taking care of things they would have taken care of themselves back when they were still with the living.

Once the mail starts coming to your house, you can now easily identify any subscriptions and accounts you have to go and request to be closed due to the user’s passing.

5. Notify The Employer Of Your Family Member

Get in touch with the deceased’s employer and find out if there are any paychecks or other benefits that you can claim on behalf of them or their family. Also, inquire if there’s any life insurance policy that the deceased had been contributing towards at the company. It’s additional help for the grieving family members.

What To Do After A Loved One Passes Away

Two Weeks Moving Forward

A week or two after your loved one has died; it’ll now be a good time to plan ahead.

1. Ensure That Certified Copies Of Death Certificates Are Kept Safe

Get around ten copies of the death certificate and have them certified as they will be required in a lot of processes you will have to go through on behalf of the deceased. These actions may include closing bank accounts, brokerage accounts, register the death with relevant government agencies as well as filing for insurance.

The funeral parlour might also be able to get these copies for you or alternatively the vital statistics office in the state in which the death occurred.

2. Locate The Will And Executor

The location of any cash, property, or personal belongings must be known to relevant people who are also close to your loved one. You should have spoken to your loved ones before they passed away, and they should have told you where their will was held. If not, you’ll have to look for confidential records in all possible places.

People typically name the person who will be in charge of the will’s administration in the will. This person is called an executor. For the bulk of the steps mentioned below, the trustee must be there. If there’s no will, the probate court will appoint an administrator.

Bottom line

The time just after receiving news of the death of a loved one can be overwhelming. That’s why some people would rather react inappropriately. Also, so much needs to be processed at the same time and you’re just one person dealing with a lot on your plate. Get help from your relatives, colleagues, and friends as you start going through the steps listed in this article and several others that will still need to be done following your loved one’s death.

Kool-Aid Balls Recipe: The New Strawberry Lemonade Bomb

6

This recipe for Strawberry Lemonade Kool-Aid Balls are awesome for kids and adults! It’s the perfect way to refresh in the heat of a summer day.

Strawberry Lemonade Kool-Aid Balls

If you thought warm weather meant that you could retire your hot chocolate bomb molds, think again. I have something new for you that you will want to be doing all summer long! No, it isn’t ice. It’s even kooler. Oh, yeah! You can use your sphere-shaped silicone molds to make a whole new kind of drink bomb. Yes, it’s possible. Yes, it’s amazing. Yes, they are Strawberry Lemonade Kool-Aid Balls!

A Kool-Aid Recipe that Breaks the Mold (Figuratively)

If you still don’t have round molds, I have a link below where you can find them. I have been using mine for months and they are well worth the investment. Especially when you consider that they aren’t only seasonal as you will see in this fantastic Kool-Aid bombs recipe.

Strawberry Lemonade Kool-Aid Balls

It’s a Shell Game

This recipe is a lot of fun to make and it will broaden your horizons in the kitchen. Instead of making your shells out of chocolate as you do for hot chocolate bombs, you make Kool-Aid balls with a hard candy shell. If you have never made candy before, this is a fun recipe to experiment with. You will need a candy thermometer to make sure your shell components reach the right temperature.

Carefully spread your melted candy in the mold as it will be sticky and hot. The inside of the ball can be made out of any other crystalized beverage mix as well. Working with sugar candy is a little bit different than working with chocolate, so give yourself some room for trial and error if this is your first time! Once you try it, you will want to do it all summer long!

Kook-Aid Flavours

If you don’t like the Strawberry Lemonade flavour you can definitely substitute for any other of your favourite Kool-Aid packet such as:

Feng Shui Love and Marriage

When it comes to love and romance, most people want a relationship that has a positive energy, where both parties are at peace within themselves and with each other. While it is true that the art of Feng Shui cannot guarantee that you will find your true love, or make a relationship last forever, there are some things you can do using Feng Shui techniques to help it along. So, use the below tips for maximizing the Feng Shui love and marriage bedroom ideas.

What Is Feng Shui

Feng shui (pronounced feng-shway) means wind-water. In the Chinese culture gentle wind and clear water have long been associated with good health, livelihood and fortune. It is an ancient art of living in harmony with the elements of the earth. One key component of feng shui is designing your living space so that positive energy, or chi, can flow throughout the space without anything blocking or hindering its path.

Below are few easy ways Feng Shui in a home will be helpful in aiding to improve love and romance in one’s life.

Feng Shui Love and Marriage Bedroom Ideas

Decorating with feng shui

Altering the Feng Shui of one’s environment can create new opportunities, options, and favorable results. For example, rearranging the bedroom furniture could promote better sleep, or hanging a wind-chime in a certain corner could encourage the flow of wealth and promote good health.

Feng Shui can be applied to certain areas in the house to create full benefit. For example, the front door influences one’s opportunity and the level of income. Making this area pleasant and not crowded can be beneficial. Getting rid of clutters in the house will help unblock good energy and create a better state of mind. Colours are another important aspect of Feng Shui. Colours can influence moods, energy levels, and one’s daily performance.

Feng Shui Colour Tips

Choose colours for your bedroom wisely, whether for the walls, bedding or any accent pieces you will be including in the room. Warm colours like pink and red will enliven your love life, while bold colours such as, scarlet, crimson, and burgundy will attract a passionate and adventurous love live.

Decorators know through experience that colours affect the way the occupants feel about their surroundings. Feng Shui Masters have known this for many centuries and use this in colour luck management. Let’s first look at this basic guide to Feng Shui decorations and the effect the colours generate on home interiors and its inhabitants.

Black

This is a yin colour. Representing strength and force. In Feng Shui black also symbolizes a brand new start and the end of conflict. Warning: use black in small doses in all Feng Shui decorations. Too much black tends to depressive.

Blue

In Feng Shui design, blue symbolizes honour, faith, truth, along with trustworthiness. Too much blue in home decorations causes the occupants to disagree about small matters and argue over seemingly small problems.

Brown

In Feng Shui, decorations in the colour brown symbolizes reliability and faithfulness. This earthy yin colour should be used in small quantifies around the home. Too much brown is depressive.

Gold

Gold represents positive Chi (energy) and brings good luck to the home according to Feng Shui theory. Never go overboard with this wealth attracting colour. Too much gold causes the home’s occupants to stress money concerns over family relationships.

Feng Shui Room Colour Classification With Baguas

Green

Green represents infidelity and dishonesty. And green also symbolizes money and wealth in Feng Shui. Feng Shui decorators warn against using too much green in the home. Using large quantities of green in home decor causes occupants to turn envious and jealous.

Gray

This nondescript color fades into the room background and causes other colors to stand out prominently. Feng Shui decorators always look for balance and harmony in the decor by using equal yin and yang. Gray is neither yin or yang. It represents a combining of the two colors. So, this color is thought unbalanced and tends to cause disharmony.

Orange

This colour combines red (fire) and yellow (earth). A colour symbolizing high aspirations. Amplify positive Chi with splashes of this colour in decor.

Red

Fire colour red is very popular in Feng Shui decor. This good luck colour awakens the energies in the room. Too much red in interior decorations causes hot tempers to flare and emotional outburst.

Violet

The color of truth and passion. A combination of red (fire) and blue (water). A bit of this color in an interior space influences creative endeavors.

White

This colour symbolizes purity. A very strong yang colour. White also reflects light bringing strong Chi influence to a room.

Yellow

Yellow is empirical the colour representing prestige and high honour in Chinese Culture. Pale yellow is thought to amplify positive Chi in a space. Too much yellow causes negative Chi. Occupants become stubborn and set in their ways.

Feng Shui colours used in Feng Shui decorations greatly influence a room’s occupants. Learn to use the colours to maximize positive Chi in your home!

Feng Shui To Attract Love And Marriage

Are you looking to activate Feng Shui for love and romance in your home? To create a space with positive chi your space must be clutter free. If the spaces throughout your home are cramped, cluttered with stuff, and your furniture is positioned any which way, the chi won’t flow. When the positive energy can flow freely throughout the space that surrounds you, then your life will become much more peaceful.

Feng Shui In The Bedroom

The Chi will greatly be enhanced if your entire home is clutter free, but for the purpose of this article I will focus on the main love room – the bedroom. If you want to bring some spark into your love life, start by cleaning up and clearing out all the clutter in your bedroom. Everything in its place is a good motto to have when applying the techniques of Feng Shui. If you exercise in your bedroom, stop doing so and clear out any exercise equipment or sporting equipment out of the room. The goal is to create an environment that is romantic and calming, not one that is full of energy arising from exertion and hard work.

Feng Shui Items For Love And Marriage

Move your bed away from the wall so that you can walk around both sides of the bed. If one side of your bed is shoved up against the wall, it creates a blockage in the flow of positive energy. The best position for your bed is on the opposite side of the room from the door entrance, but not directly in line with the door. If you can’t see the bedroom door from the bed, hang a mirror to provide a reflective view of the entryway.

Toss off the flannel sheets of winter and invest in some sensual bedding, such as pillows, blankets and quality linen sheets. Choose patterned sheets as they are thought to add zest to your sex life.

If you own a king size bed, consider downsizing to a queen size bed in order to cultivate intimacy. Take time to invest in a high quality mattress as well.

Remove the television set from the bedroom. It kills the romance in any space. If you struggle with falling asleep, try listening to soothing music, or reading romantic poetry or novels.

What Are The Symbols Of Love

Surround yourself with images that will add spark to love and the relationships in your life. Get rid of the family photos and child’s art work that is hanging on the walls. Your bedroom is not the place for these items. Place them elsewhere in your home to celebrate those relationships that are important to you. Hang artwork that will enhance love and the romance, the best symbol of love, such as, a picture of a couple holding hands, roses, or cherubs. Place candles in key areas of your bedroom to ignite for those romantic evenings.

Feng Shui In The Living room

As for the rest of your home, create spaces that are clutter free so that positive energy can flow freely throughout the entire home. For some Feng Shui living room ideas, have furniture that is made for two, such a love seat where you can snuggle with your loved one. If all you have is single person seating, you are actually blocking any potential flow of love energy.

Feng Shui Love and Marriage Bedroom Ideas

Feng Shui Love And Romance

I hope that you got a few key ideas to enrich your love and romance life with Feng Shui. Once you have created your bedroom with Feng Shui techniques, take some time to utilize similar techniques for the rest of your home, in order to create balance and the specific energy you desire for each space within your home.

Cheesy Garlic Bread Loaf Recipe

3

One thing that always makes a meal complete is the right kind of bread service. Cheesy garlic bread loaf is always the right kind of bread service. You can make this before most meals and it’s the perfect start to an Italian dinner.

Cheesy Garlic Bread Loaf

Why Cheesy Garlic Bread Loaf and Not Some Other Garlic Bread?

This easy method of making garlic bread keeps the entire loaf intact. In fact, the way the garlic-spread and the cheese melt, you have to pull it apart a little bit to get a piece. Besides the fact that it is oddly satisfying to do this, it’s also nice that you don’t have to pack separate slices of garlic bread if you plan to enjoy your meal elsewhere. This loaf is more convenient for travel. Buttered bread with melted cheese isn’t the most portable option around most of the time, so keeping it all together as a loaf makes sense. It also helps the presentation if you are trying to impress friends or family.

The Trick to Making Cheesy Garlic Loaf

The first thing to remember is that this is not a super consistent, uniformly made factory-like process. It’s messy and rough. You want it to feel more sloppy and thrown together. If you overthink the process it loses some magic. You want the slices to be drawn to each other and bound by the buttery spread and the melting cheese. to do that butter and cheese each side and then press them firmly together. Keep the loaf intact, separating only the segment you are working on each time. Give each piece a good slather and slap it back in line with the rest of the loaf.

Cheesy Garlic Bread Loaf Recipe

Cheese Garlic Bread For Camping

I also love bringing a loaf like this along on summer camping trips. It easy to wrap it in aluminium foil and heat it on the BBQ or grill. It’s fun to pull apart and even eat it by itself. After all, nothing beats the cheesy flavour of good garlic bread. This is a really good way to make it. It allows you to keep a whole loaf together until it is time to enjoy, whether at the dinner table or at a picnic table.

Cricut DIY “Bloom” Terra Cotta Flower Pot Project

6

This simple and minimalist, yet elegant Bloom flower pot craft came out exactly the way that I wanted and now I have just the Cricut DIY tutorial for you, plus the list of all the supplies you are going to need.

Cricut DIY "Bloom" Terra Cotta Flower Pot Project

One thing I love is DIY decor that looks like I hired a professional to do the job. That’s what I get when I use Cricut templates like the bloom pot craft I have to share with you today. If you want to dress up an indoor or outdoor garden with some lovely-looking pots, here is how you can provide some encouragement for some flowering plants to be.

What is Cricut?

Cricut is a brand that creates cutting plotters. Uniquely designed printers specifically made for cutting a variety of materials with great precision. There are over 100 types of materials a Cricut machine can cut. You can also upload your own images for a completely custom and professional DIY personalization project. That’s where my Bloom svg file comes in. You simply measure your pot to tell the machine how big to make the print. Of all the potential materials I could use on my pot I chose vinyl to get the best effect.

Painting Your Bloom Pot

This is an easy craft to do for the outcome. I was very pleased with the way mine turned out. Keep in mind whenever you are painting, that you must be careful not to get paint on your surroundings. Try to paint outdoors whenever possible. Fresh air is also a good counterbalance to the fumes you breathe in the paint. Be sure to use a drop cloth or something that can cover the floor and protect the immediate area from getting any wet paint. If you don’t have a scraper tool like the one mentioned in the materials list below, you can also use an old credit card.

Which Cricut To Use?

For this Cricut DIY Pot Craft, I used a Cricut Explorer Air 2. Pretty much any Cricut machine such as Cricut Joy or Cricut Maker should work as long as it can print the dimensions listed below of 5″ wide by 2″ tall.

Strawberry Cobbler Recipe

2

Strawberry cobbler is one of my favourite ways to prepare this seasonal treat and I have just the delicious recipe for a flavour-packed strawberry filling, topped with the most amazing homemade crumble.

Strawberry Cobbler

This time of year, there is nothing better than the smell of fresh strawberries wafting out of the kitchen. I love the scent of fresh fruit in general. So, this is the time for the bright and cheerful aroma of strawberries to take up residence here. I love walking into a kitchen to smell the rich overtones of ripe in all of their unique glory, but it’s so disappointing to discover that scent is merely coming from a plug-in or candle. The smell of strawberries for me is always coupled with the expectation of diving into some real sweet, juicy, and somewhat tart strawberries, whether they’re dipped in dark chocolate or baked in a cobbler. This strawberry cobbler recipe is a must to serve for your summer family gatherings!

What Is A Strawberry Cobbler?

Simply put, a strawberry cobbler is a baked dessert (or breakfast, if you have it in the morning with coffee) that resembles pie filling with a baked crumbled dough on top instead of traditional pie crust. You make it in a casserole or baking dish. It looks a bit like a pie until you dig in and find that there is no crust below the surface. A true old-fashioned cobbler is topped with biscuit dough and resembles a cobbled road. This version, called a crumble, is more common. If you make it with oats it is called a crisp. Either way, I call dibs!

Strawberry Cobbler Recipe

The Best Strawberry Cobbler Filling

Whenever you make a crumble or cobbler, the star of the show is what lies beneath the pocked surface. Berries make the best cobblers, although peach is a close second. My favourite berries to make cobbler out of are strawberries. They have such a distinct flavour compared with other varieties. This easy strawberry cobbler recipe draws out those unique characteristics while enhancing the flavour with just the right amount of brown sugar and other important ingredients.

Can I Make-Ahead The Cobbler?

You can bake the cobbler the day before and leave it on the counter for 2 days, then store in the refrigerator for another 2 days. You can also chill it in the refrigerator for 4 days, covered, but make sure it’s completely cooled uncovered before. This can take from 3 to 5 hours. Before serving, let the cobbler stand at room temperature for about 1 hour. If you like it warmed up, then reheat in a preheated 350°F oven for about 20 minutes.

Can I Make A Strawberry Cobbler With Frozen Strawberries?

3 Exciting Spring Activities for Seniors In Ottawa

1

For seniors, spring is an especially exciting time. The winter weather can make it hard for older people to continue doing outdoor activities, and it can make it hard for seniors living on their own to visit friends and family. This makes winter an especially isolating time for seniors, but with the arrival of spring, the opportunity to pick up a new hobby or reconnect with friends suddenly becomes an easy option again. Not only is this just plain fun, but having a hobby and keeping socially connected has a myriad of health benefits for seniors.

Happy senior lady playing with little boy and girl in blooming rose garden.

With that in mind, here are 3 exciting activities for seniors that will shake off those winter blues:

1. Gardening

Gardening is a great spring activity for any senior to pick up. With the changing season comes more variety at the local nurseries, meaning more plants that can accommodate any skill level. Whether they’re completely new to gardening or have years of experience, seniors will likely find a plant they’ll enjoy caring for.

Not only does gardening give seniors the joy of caring for another living thing, but it’s also a great excuse for seniors to get in some exercise. If they’re planting a full-blown outdoor garden, the bending, crouching, and standing involved can help to maintain their flexibility.

If they would rather start small, encourage them to look into potted plants. Potted plants can be kept indoors, or, if they live in a seniors residence, be kept out on a private balcony. This allows seniors to personalize and decorate their living space. They could also try growing herbs and vegetables like bell peppers with mason jar gardening.

On top of that, having to remember how to care for their new plants is an excellent way to keep themselves mentally stimulated, which can help to ward off various mental health issues.

2. Outdoor Games

Playing outdoor games is another way to get in some exercise, but it also allows them to reconnect with friends and family they might have lost touch with over the winter. Here are a couple of games that seniors can enjoy outdoors with their friends and family:

  • Bocce ball
  • Croquet
  • Lawn bowling
  • Badminton
  • Wiffleball

These games require more than one person, so they’re a great way to bring seniors together with their family and friends. The equipment used in these games is also relatively lightweight, making them good for anyone who may have issues lifting heavy objects.

Bocce ball is the perfect example of a fun, outdoor game you can play with just a set of balls and a measuring tool that comes with the set. The rules of bocce ball are simple, and it’s an excellent activity for light exercise. It helps seniors improve their flexibility and get in some light cardio. It also requires concentration and focus, which can help seniors work on their mindfulness.

3. Walking in Nature

With spring melting away the snow and ice, nature trails once again become accessible. For seniors living at a retirement residence in Ottawa, there are many great sites nearby.

Ottawa has a wealth of green spaces and nature trails that are easily accessible by car. Outside the city, nature trails like Stony Swamp Trail and Pinhey Forest, are suitable for all skill levels. Closer to the city, Hog’s Back Falls, Poet’s Pathway, and of course the greenspace around Parliament Hill, make for great areas to enjoy a walk any time of day.

A walk in nature has many different benefits for seniors. Physically, nature walks can help a senior stay in shape, especially when it comes to their cardiovascular health. To further encourage seniors to head out for a walk, try getting them a Fitbit or even a simple pedometer that will count their steps; this can give them a tangible goal to work towards.

Mentally, a peaceful nature walk can help seniors practice mindfulness, or the ability to stay in the moment. By being in nature, away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, seniors can more easily practice mindfulness to reduce mental fatigue.

Not only does this help reduce stress, but it can help seniors deal with feelings of anxiety, have better focus, and have better quality sleep.

Planning Time with Senior Parents this Spring

As a busy mom with your own family, you know how hard it is to find time to do just about anything. But spring is the ideal season for getting outdoors with the whole family, including senior parents. Unlike the dog days of summer, you don’t have to worry as much about extreme heat and how that can affect older family members.

3 Exciting Spring Activities for Seniors In Ottawa

While the kids have plenty of space to run around and get their energy out, you can take a nice relaxing stroll with mom or dad, enjoy a nature walk through one of Ottawa’s top trails, or help out with the gardening. Enjoy quality family time in the great outdoors this spring.

6 Insider Secrets To Save With Children

0

Having children will always make you dig deeper into your pocket to try and make ends meet. Not only do they need your money, but they also need your time and attention, taking up time you’d have used to make more money. Older parents may have found a hack and finally managed to find a balance, but first-time parents may feel the pinch.

Usually, parents always turn to banks and other financial platforms; however, children’s needs and demands may eat much into your savings. It’s therefore crucial that parents design different ways to save money. This, however, doesn’t only revolve around putting money into a savings account but also cost-cutting measures that reduce spending.

Family putting saving money in a piggy bank

Ways To Save With Children

There are different ways in which you can save money when you have children. These methods can be helpful depending on your location, income, and most importantly, the number of children. But there are general methods that cut across different areas.

Such helpful tips include the following:

1. Use Prepaid Card

A prepaid card is an improved way of making you more disciplined with your finances. Not only does it allow you to save money, but it also controls how you spend the money. For example, using prepaid cards for shopping online is an excellent alternative to cash transactions. This is because you only spend the amount you’ve loaded, and not what you have.

Loading your card with only what you need can help prevent impulse shopping which is primarily associated with cash. In addition, you’ll become more aware of what you’re spending your money on and how much you’ve spent, which will help you save more.

2. Buy Second-Hand Items

When growing up, kids will require clothes and toys. These items are expensive when bought as brand new; however, you can choose to buy second-hand items, and you can save a whole lot of money on an item. You can also shop from second-hand clothes and gift stores that cost less than the brand new.

Another alternative to buying second-hand items is by keeping clothes and toys used by the elder children. As long as those items are of good quality, they can last for a long time, cutting the need for new purchases.

3. Plan Your Meals

Planning your meal can help you save a lot of money. For example, when you make a list of what you’re going to eat in a week, you can then bulk shop for those ingredients at once. When you bulk shop, you reduce the extra costs such as transport fees.

You can have precise control over your finances by planning your meal budget. You also avoid unnecessary spending that may arise every time you make a stop at the grocery store.

Ways To Save Money When You Have Children

4. Limit Extra-Curricular Activities

When having kids, a lot of money can be used on extra-curricular activities. While these activities are important to the growth of a child, they aren’t always necessary. You can then limit the number of days that your kids go to theme parks and zoo, or how often they purchase books.

You should encourage your family to take advantage of free activities such as taking a walk in the park, visiting the beach, or bike riding. Instead of buying books, you can read in the library or borrow books from book clubs and friends. This is a significant cost-cutting measure that will ensure you save much money.

5. Observe the Two-Days Rule

One of the golden rules of shopping is having a two-day waiting period. When you spot a product, ensure that you don’t buy it there and then. You can wait for up to two days to determine if you need to purchase the item.

In some cases, people will panic buy things because they see others buying or because they’ve been impressed by the item. As a result, you may end up wasting a lot of money on things that you didn’t need.

6. Develop a Saving Challenge

Even though saving when having children seems complicated, you can start a saving challenge with a tiny amount. You can then choose to save either weekly, daily, or monthly. In addition, you can use piggy banks to save coins. This can also help cultivate a saving culture with your children.

After shopping for all the necessities, the remaining amount can be saved instead of using it on other luxuries that aren’t necessarily needed. In the end, the money can come in handy on other essential issues.

Conclusion

Once you get kids, the responsibility becomes more. You have to balance between providing for them now and providing for them in the future. Kids can have so many demands, and because of the soft spot you have for them, you may end up giving in to their wants. When you buy what they don’t necessarily need, you eat up on your finances.

Develop a good saving strategy and adopt ways that will help you cut costs around the family, like using gift cards when buying groceries. You should also develop a saving culture among your children to help them understand the importance of doing so.

Feng Shui For Healthy Family Relationships

0

Feng Shui is the art and science of energy flow promoting healthy relationships and balance in all areas of life including your family.

Feng Shui is not just practiced in the Chinese culture anymore. It is a very complex study that can take years to fully grasp, but the basics are simple.

Before practicing Feng Shui, identify areas that need improvement and set a goal. It could be work, health, relationship, children, and so on. Then apply the knowledge of Feng Shui to tackle these areas. Pick a Feng Shui cure that best works for the surrounding and inner self and apply that cure to promote a better life and healthy family relationships.

Feng Shui For Healthy Family Relationships

What Does Feng Shui Mean?

The art and science concerned with the flow of energy is called of Feng Shui. Ancient Chinese promoted healthy relationships with all things by exploring the principles of balance in all areas of life. Feng Shui refers to the energies that flow through everything, like the movement of wind and the flow of water, which can be directed, harnessed, or blocked. This living energy source is called Chi. Feng Shui is working with this force and removing obstacles to enhance health, wealth, and happiness.

History of Feng Shui

The earliest form of Feng Shui was used to orient the homes of the dead rather than of the living. The term first appeared in the Book of Burial which dates back to the 4th century CE.

During the 3rd century, in the recorded text Zangjing, Feng Shui became concerned with the geographic progression of the earth and weather patterns. This type of Feng Shui is known as the Form School. During the Song Dynasty, Feng Shui developed into systems of home placement, creating the Compass School. Spinoffs of the Compass system include the Ying-Yang Theory, The Theory of Five Elements, the Lo-Shu Square, and others. The Black Hat sec of Feng Shui Form School started in 1960. The Black Hat sec has become one of the most popular forms during modern times according to the book, Mystic Foundation.

Feng Shui: Chi

Feng Shui encourages the accumulation of Chi, but is mostly concerned with the quality, not the quantity, of energy. The Chi must keep flowing to effectively bring blessings into lives. Slow-moving water and air encourages good Chi while fast moving water and air dissipates Chi. Disharmonious shapes, harsh corners, sharp angles, and clutter can interrupt the flow of healthy Chi. Harmonious shapes encourage its healthy flow. Careful placement of household items is used to slow Chi and encourage positive flow of energy.

Feng Shui: Pa Kua

Most systems of Feng Shui work with the Bagua, 8 trigrams, of the 1 Ching, arranged around an octagon called a Pa Kua. The Pa Kua pattern is placed over a single room or floor plan and used as a method of laying out objects. Practitioners working with a room or dwelling aligns the front door (or most used door) with the side of the Pa Kua that has Knowledge, Career, and Friends.

Feng Shui: Eight Trigrams or Nine Stars

Another method, known as the Eight Trigrams or Nine Stars method, aligns the Pa Kua to the compass directions. The flow of chi and the state of harmony or disarray will affect the corresponding area of life. Many in the West encourage the use of intuitive Feng Shui, using either your own intuition or other Mandela system to feel the flow of energy that is best suits you.

Many critics of Feng Shui say that its principles are based on China’s weather patterns, climate and culture and do not meld well with the Western world; however, the principles of harmony, flow, and health resonate with every culture. If you find sound advice that works for you through Feng Shui, intuition, or other system then by all means use it.

Feng Shiu The Basics To Learn

There are levels of Feng Shui that is easy to use in your daily life that are believed to bring you good fortune and maybe love and romance! Below are some of the basics to begin with, but they are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to Feng Shui as a whole.

Feng means Wind and Shui means Water. In China, wind and water means good health and this is associated with good fortune. Chi means energy and the theory is that the land is alive and full of Chi. One concept of Feng Shui is the art of placing 5 Elements correctly in your home.

The basics to start out learning in the most simplistic way are: The Feng Shui Five Elements Theory and The Feng Shui Yin Yang Theory.

The Feng Shui Five Elements Theory

The Feng Shui Five element Theory are Wood, Water, Fire, Earth, Metal.

These 5 Fend Shui elements have a place in the home and represent something important, but they have to come in certain shapes and sizes and be placed in correct settings.

  • Wood represents the beginning of new life. You must keep live wood in your home to be creative, generous, social, and ethical.
  • Water is the basis of our existence. Flowing water signifies influence, travel, learning, and communication. Stagnate water can signify something unfortunate.
  • Fire is considered to be the most yang of elements. Fire is attractive, active, strong, and impulsive.
  • Earth is soil combined with something like clay or stone. It is solid, reliable, patient, and stable.
  • Metals are Gold, Copper, Silver etc. They signify power, intensity, success, and money.
Feng Shui Five Elements with Ying Yang

What Is Yin And Yang?

The Yin and the Yang are opposites that when combined they are in a cycle of constant change. They are black and white representing dark and light, right and wrong, female and male, etc. They are two parts that are ultimately a whole. Yin and Yang are opposites that must always be in balance.

In the Tai-ji (the Yin Yang Symbol) there is a small piece of Yin in the Yang and within the Yin, there is a small piece of the Yang. Each part of the duo cannot exist without the other. Chinese do not see things as right or wrong, but rather the duality must be equally present to maintain balance.

Feng Shui To Improve Family Relationships

Whether you have a breakdown in communication with a family member, or want to improve on something good, Feng Shui can help. Whether a relationship is good or bad, the intricacies of each person’s temperament and psyche are fragile and no connection will ever be exactly like another.

Feng Shui For Family Happiness

If your relationship with a family member is good, Feng Shui can help to make it better. If your relationship is tenuous, Feng Shui can turn it around. The wrong Feng Shui can make a strong bond weak, just as the right Feng Shui can heal.

Few relationships are as complex as those you have with members of your family.

Bagua Map

Where To Locate Your Family Gua

The area of your bagua that deals with family is the center of the left wall (or the left boundary of a room, as you enter). If you imagine a bagua overlay on a particular room or on your whole home, focus on the left wall, specifically the middle area. That is your family Gua.

Wood – The Element of the Family Gua

The element for the family Gua is wood. A wooden table in this area of your Bagua could enhance your chi with family members. When looking at the Bagua of your living space, if your dining area is located in the family Gua, you have a built in opportunity to enhance your relationships with siblings, parents, and other family. A round wooden table invites conversation, trust, and openness with each other.

Wooden Table in dining area-Feng Shui -Family Gua

Other Ways To Improve Family Chi

If you want to mend broken family relationships, you can work with the family Gua in other rooms of your home, not only the dining area. In your bedroom, you can hang wooden wind chimes in the family Gua. Wind chimes are a common Feng Shui cure. Depending on the situation you are working on, and the primary element of the particular Gua, wind chimes made from different sources enhance your Chi.

If you want to use Feng Shui in your front room to improve family relationships, you might hang family photos of happy times in the specified Gua. A comfy sofa, a pleasant light, and a piano are all symbols of reassurance and calmness, both conducive to positive Chi.

Garden Feng Shui

Feng Shui in your garden could be the best area for you to focus on Chi surrounding your family relationships. A well-tended flowerbed can symbolize new or ongoing life, be it child being born, rejuvenation of a dormant relationship, or ongoing success in a relationship you have now.

When you have issues with members of your family, your heart needs to heal. Feng Shui may be helpful in building or rebuilding a treasured part of your life.

Bad Feng Shui symbolizes bad luck or misfortune in the Chinese culture, therefore learning some level of Feng Shui and practicing it in your life may bring you the good fortune you are looking for. By applying some of these basics of Feng Shui, you can change your decor, learn home remedies, and even feel healthier and more harmonious with family members.

Ice Cream Dome With Peanut Butter Cups And Chocolate

3

This delicious Peanut Butter Ice Cream Dome does not require any special culinary skills to make! They will look so stylish to give to your family or guests for a special dessert.

Peanut Butter Ice Cream Dome

As summer approaches, I am frequently reminded that ice cream is now officially in season! That means it’s the perfect time to put my sphere molds to good use on a fun presentation for one of my favourite sunny day treats. Part of the reason I picked up these sphere molds is that I love the appearance of dome-shaped desserts such as cake and mousse made in a beautiful glossy shell. If you are also a fan of this elegant but simple plating style, you will be thrilled to know that an ice cream dome is incredibly easy to make. It’s so easy that I had to throw in a couple of embellishments, just to make this an extra special afternoon treat.

Ice Cream Dome With Peanut Butter Cups And Chocolate

What Makes A Peanut Butter Chocolate Ice Cream Dome?

Besides the obvious, I couldn’t resist making this ice cream dome recipe even more chocolatey and peanut buttery than the name implies. These gorgeous domes are filled and topped with peanut butter and chocolate, so even the most crazed pb&c fan will be satisfied. Plus, the dome controls the serving size so you don’t have to worry about anybody overindulging in this sweet recipe. The inside of the ice cream sphere includes a surprise peanut butter cup and the top of the dome is drizzled with chocolate and crushed peanuts. This recipe is similar to a Tartufo.

Peanut Butter Ice Cream Dome

How To Melt Chocolate Chips

There are two main ways that you can melt chocolate to make the chocolate dome shell. The fastest way is in the microwave with a microwavable safe bowl, but it’s not necessarily the easiest. You may have difficulty with the melted chocolate consistency and it may seize up on you quickly if you don’t work fast on the dome molds. The other method is a double boiler if you have one. This is the most proper and helpful way to melt chocolate. If you don’t have a double boiler, you can try to make one of your own using stacked saucepans or a glass bowl that can withstand the heat and will fit over a single saucepan.

Peanut Butter Ice Cream Dome

  • Yield: 6
  • Prep time: 25 minutes
  • Total time: overnight in freezer for setting

  • 2 cups of milk chocolate chips (dark or white will also work)
  • 2.5 cups of Peanut Butter Ice cream
  • 6 chocolate peanut butter cups
  • Chocolate sauce (store bought or homemade)
  • 4 tbsp of chopped peanuts

Equipment Needed

melted chocolate chips in a chocolate sphere

How To Make The Chocolate Domes

Melt milk chocolate chips either in the microwave or by using a double boiler (see above explanation). Pour a small amount of chocolate into each of the 6 sphere molds. Drag chocolate with a spoon up the sides until the mold is covered. Place in freezer for 5 minutes. This will allow the chocolate to quickly set up.

How To Make The Ice Cream Dome

Remove the spheres from the freezer and fill each dome with peanut butter ice cream (while still in mold) up to about ¾ full. Press a peanut butter cup into the middle. Press down gently.

Place back into the freezer for 20 minutes. Remove each ice cream dome from mold and top with remaining chocolate and level with a spatula. Place back into the freezer overnight.

When you are ready to serve, place on a plate and drizzle some chocolate sauce on top. Garnish with chopped peanuts.

Chocolate Ice Cream Bread Recipe

3

Chocolate ice cream bread is one of those irresistible dessert that you have to make and I promise you, it does not disappoint!

Like making biscuits out of soda (yes, it’s a thing) making ice cream bread is as fun as it is unusual. Best of all, it’s tasty. Don’t worry, this is bread, not cake. The chocolate ice cream adds just a touch of sweetness to make things more interesting, but it isn’t predominantly sweet. If you want it sweet, though, you can definitely add more sugar. Some people really like the idea of bread that actually tastes like chocolate ice cream; however, what I enjoy about this recipe is the subtlety in the way the ice cream plays with the other ingredients in the bread.

Chocolate Ice Cream Bread Recipe

Bread Like Ice Cream

The amazing thing about this chocolate ice cream bread recipe is that it’s not a complicated recipe. It’s essentially ice cream turned into bread using the most basic ingredients. The result is a delicious sweet bread that actually looks a lot like chocolate ice cream does! It’s dense and dark, and it’s amazing what a tasty transformation it is going from frozen treat to warm squishy bread. The process can take a little over an hour to complete, but it’s also important to begin checking in on the bread as it cooks to make sure it is cooking. Fat content in the ice cream varies and can change the cooking time.

Ice Cream Sandwich

I’m so thrilled with how this recipe looks and takes. I love how simple it is and the fact that ice cream is the main ingredient just makes it so fun. It brings new possibilities to the term ice cream sandwich. In fact, I recommend trying this chocolate ice cream bread with peanut butter and jelly

How To Store The Ice Cream Bread

Refrigerator: Store the ice cream bread in a plastic or glass with a lid container for 1 week.

Freezer: Store the ice cream bread in a plastic container with a lid for 3 months.

Chocolate Ice Cream Bread

Recipe Variations

There are so many possibilities of recipe variations when it comes to making ice cream bread. Simply use your favourite flavours of ice creams such as vanilla, strawberry, butter pecan, chocolate chips, and more! You can also add some toppings on the bread such as chocolate chips, sprinkles, chops nuts or pecans.

Chocolate Ice Cream Bread Recipe

This bread is dense and just slightly sweet.

Prep time: 15 minutes

Total time: 65 minutes

Ingredients

  • 2.5 cups of Chocolate Ice Cream
  • 2 ½ cups of flour
  • 2 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp baking powder

Equipment Needed

  • 2 bowls
  • Loaf pan
  • Wooden spoon
  • Rubber spatula
Chocolate Ice Cream Bread Recipe

How To Make The Chocolate Ice Cream Bread

Melt ice cream in a glass bowl in the microwave for 20 seconds. You just want it to be softer. Mix flour, baking soda, and the baking power in a bowl until well combined with a wooden spoon. Mix in ice cream until fully incorporated with the dry ingredients with a spatula or wooden spoon. Pour into a loaf pan with a spatula. I suggest you grease and flour it unless it is non-stick.

Bake at 350 for 50 minutes. Start checking on the loaf around 35 minutes to check on if it is done. You’ll want a toothpick to come out clean in the densest part of the loaf. Let cool and remove from the pan

Recipe Notes

  1. Use a wooden spoon or rubber spatula to remove the lumps when you are mixing the ice cream. You don’t want to overwork the batter when adding the ice cream to the dry mixture and this will result in a dense bread.
  2. If you want additional sweetness add in 2 tbsp of sugar.
  3. Depending on the fat content in your ice cream can make the loaf cook a bit faster, or take a bit longer.

4 Resume Tips for Moms Returning to Work

0

If you have chosen to take a few years off to spend with your family and focus on being a mom, you probably have some reservations about whether your old resume will still hold up. Business changes quickly and being out of the game, even for a few years, can put you at a disadvantage.

If you feel insecure about your ability to get back into the workplace, you are not alone. Millions of stay-at-home moms are getting ready to return to work this year. The key is to focus on how to sell yourself using your resume. Setting yourself apart from other candidates is all about showcasing your skills and what you can do for the team.

Resume Tips for Moms Returning to Work

Your education and job experience remain an advantage, regardless of your time away from the job. It’s essential to present your resume in a way that highlights your skills, career accomplishments, and steers the focus away from your absence. Keep in mind that as a parent, you will add many new skills and knowledge to your soft skill set that can be used in the professional world and should be showcased in your resume.

Employers are less worried about a career gap on your resume than they are about your unique skill set. Don’t shy away from your years off the job. You can include some of the soft skills you have learned as a parent and showcase your independent achievements. After all, negotiating with a cranky toddler is a masterclass in conflict resolution, which is easily applied in the workplace. Let’s look at a few resume tips to help moms like you that are returning to work achieve their career dreams.

1. Review the Market

After a few years, a lot can change in your industry. You may have kept up with a few friends from work while you were at home, but that doesn’t mean that you have your hand on the pulse of your business. Every industry evolves with new advancements and technologies, and it’s important to know what is new in your field.

Before you start revamping your resume, take some time to review your market and find out what is new. Do some research into the latest industry news to get you up to date. You can check current job postings in your market and determine what kind of qualifications new employers are looking for. You don’t want to end up attending your first staff meeting and realizing that you don’t know what is going on.

2. Include a Cover Letter

Most modern companies don’t require a cover letter to be attached to a resume, but it is still an excellent introductory tool. Let your resume speak for your skills and experience, and use your cover letter to focus on your soft skills, goals, and achievements. Your cover letter is the space where you can highlight the achievements during your time away from your careers, like your volunteering, education upgrades, and certifications.

Your cover letter should be simple and straightforward. This is the place in your CV where you can fill the gaps that your resume may leave for potential employers. You don’t need to get too personal or reveal all the details of your life story; however, your cover letter should act as more of a personalized introduction for recruiters.

3. Skill-Based Format

With thousands of online resume templates available, it can be challenging to pick the style that will work the best for you. As a mom returning to work, you want to highlight your skills and take the focus off your time out of the industry. It’s best to avoid a chronologically styled resume template as they will make your career break more obvious.

A modern resume that allows you to focus on your hard and soft skills, accomplishment, and goals will work better and get more attention from recruiters. Employers are less interested in your employment gaps than what your specific skill set can bring to their company.

4. Mirror Job Description

The great thing about using a resume template is that it can be repeatedly edited. Once you have your basic outline, you can customize each version to match the needs of individual employers. After you review a job posting,  rework your resume to mirror the pain points that the employers are looking to solve. This will give employers a clearer picture of what you have to offer and how hiring you could be the solution to their problems.

Take your time studying current job listings to get a feel for what current employers are looking for. There may be a difference in industry language or a new emphasis on education that wasn’t present in the past. Mirroring your resume to adapt to current job descriptions is an effective resume strategy.

Resume Tips for Moms Returning to Work

Heading back to work after spending a few cherished years as a mom can be terrifying and exhilarating. Don’t be intimidated by your absence from the workplace. Show your confidence by creating a resume that highlights your skills, achievements, and experience and gets the attention of recruiters.

The 4 Most Important Factors Of A Budget

0

Each year, many families sit down to determine their annual budget. This conversation is often complicated, frustrating, and discouraging, as managing your finances is hardly ever a comfortable conversation topic; however, a budget is critical for families that are looking to survive, thrive, and save funds in their day to day life. Unfortunately, many people overestimate or underestimate their needs when coming up with a realistic plan of action to achieve their financial goals. In this article, we will share four important factors of a budget.

The 4 Most Important Factors Of A Budget

1. Alignment

When you are creating a budget for your family, it is important that all parties have an understanding of what is allowed versus what is prohibited. The numbers associated with each category should be agreed upon by everyone. If your family is not on the same page about the numbers that are in place, it is likely that these guidelines will not be adhered to. When everyone is aligned, it is easier to stick to goals.

In order to bring kids into the budgeting conversation, allocate an allowance that they can use towards their own personal spending. Kids can earn this allowance money by completing chores, being kind, and helping proactively with projects around the home. Many parents say that their children must earn their allowance allocation. With this allowance, help your child determine percentages of the overall total that they can give to local charity and put towards saving. This practice of spending, giving, and saving will help kids develop structure and balance in their financial future.

2. Inclusivity

It is important that a budget is truly inclusive of all your spending. Many people underestimate that amount of money they spend on everyday items or hobbies. In reality, 46% of the adults across Canada say that they adhere to a regular budget. When you underestimate your budget planning, you will likely be discouraged each month. Take the time to realistically determine how much you need and want in each area. Do you like to get your nails done? Do you often splurge on the extra tub of ice cream at the grocery store? Make sure you budget enough in each category that you experience freedom rather than constraint.

3. Honesty

Everyone has certain areas of spending that need to be reigned in. We often compromise our goals in order to do the things we enjoy. When this becomes a habit, we stray off course and may lose financial stability. Be honest about the areas that you need to gain self-control in. If you are looking for money saving advice, there are many successful individuals that have tips to help people gain perspective when they are tempted to overspend.

While it can be tempting to cover up expenses and indulge on your favorite items, it is important to be honest about the ways that you are being financially irresponsible. Some experts state that it is beneficial to take a 50/20/30 approach to finances. With this approach, 50% of the paycheck is to be used towards regular expenses, 20% of your finances are allocated towards saving and loan payments, and 30% can be used at your discretion. With this structure, you have the ability to spend money freely while still accomplishing your goals

4. Ambitious

In your budget, you have the ability to maximize your money to achieve the things that are important to you. Do you want to buy a house or a car in the coming years? Do you want to invest in your retirement account? When you set ambitious goals, you can set yourself up for long-term success. Unfortunately, the reality is that many people across Canada are living paycheck to paycheck, with several being unsure about how they will maintain financial stability in the later years of their life.

While you may have the resources to temporarily live a lavish lifestyle, you may not be setting yourself up for success in the future. Become ambitious about your long-term goals in order to live the life you want both now and in the future. Nowadays, you can invest little amounts of money in the stock market, retirement accounts, and other portfolios. Even a small investment will grow in the years to come. It is estimated that 70% of Canadians do not feel secure about their retirement plan. These same individuals believe that they will need roughly $1 million dollars to live comfortably in retirement. In order to live the comfortable retirement that you have dreamed about, you must have a long-term vision for your financial future.

The 4 Most Important Factors Of A Budget

Summary

Defining a budget can be a tricky subject. In order to adhere to your goals, you must be realistic about what is possible with the resources you have. In addition, you must be committed to sticking to your goals even when it is difficult. Budgets are tools that can help you thrive, both now and in the future.

6 Easy Homemade Baby Food Every Mom Will Love to Prepare

0

You don’t need to be a pro in the kitchen to make healthy homemade baby food. According to the Guardian, a new study reported that homemade baby foods tend to have more vitamins and nutrients than commercial baby foods. During the processing of commercial baby foods, they lose vitamins and minerals.

Easy Homemade Baby Food

Another advantage of using homemade baby food is that it saves costs. Moms save money from using fresh ingredients gotten from the local grocery stores to make the food instead of using pre-made purees.

Moms can keep food safe by exercising more control over the ingredients and flavors that they use to make baby foods. It is easy to avoid preservatives, salt, added sugar, and those ingredients that can cause allergic reactions.

If you don’t have time to cook due to a busy schedule or other reasons, try out these homemade baby food recipes. They require zero cooking and take very little time to prepare.

Homemade Foods for 4 to 6 Months Old Babies

Babies younger than 4 to 6 months should still be breastfeeding. Once they cross the 4 months old bridge, moms can start to introduce simple food for them.

Start with single-ingredient food to help you determine if your child has an allergy. When you are familiar with the food your child loves and that is healthy for them, you can try to combine different ingredients. Proper nutrition is key for raising confident, healthy, and happy children.

Some examples of homemade foods for this age group are Avocado Purée and Baby Brown Rice Cereals.

Avocado Puree

All you need is one organic avocado and a blender or fork to mash it. Mashing takes about five minutes and there is no cooking involved. You can add breastmilk, water, or any other formula to the mixture to enrich it.

Avocado Puree is rich in essential nutrients such as Folate, Fiber, Potassium, Vitamin E, and Iron. According to California Avocados, avocados are the perfect first baby food.

avocado cut in half

Baby Brown Rice Cereal

To prepare this meal you need just half a cup of short-grain brown rice, boiling water, and a blender.

  • Put the brown rice in a blender or spice grinder for 60 seconds.
  • Add ½ cup of water in an empty bowl and sprinkle in 2 teaspoons of the finely crushed brown rice.
  • Stir the mixture continuously for 30 seconds and then occasionally for the next five minutes till it becomes thick and creamy.
  • Serve a small portion that the baby can eat.

Homemade Foods for 7 to 9 Months Old Babies

Babies that are between the age of 7 to 9 months old can handle thicker purees made with several ingredients; however, carefully introduce them to one new ingredient at a time to test their sensitivity to it.

Once you confirm they are not allergic to your ingredient, you can start combining them into their diet. Meats and other proteins may be added at this age range but you need to consult your pediatrician first. We also recommend that you take into account the material you use to cook your children, as many plastics can eliminate toxic chemicals such as melamine when heating food in the microwave.

Examples of homemade baby foods for 7 to 9 months old babies include Beets and blueberry mash, and Butternut squash and pear purée.

Beets and Blueberry Mash

The ingredients you need to make it are beets and blueberries. Here are the steps to prepare this food.

  • Wash and peel the beets and cut them into small sizes.
  • Wash the blueberries.
  • Use a baby food maker to steam the beets and blueberries for about 15 minutes.
  • Use a blender to blend the beets and blueberries to make a puree. You can add water or breastmilk to the mixture.
  • Serve or store in the refrigerator.
blueberry and beets puree

Butternut Squash and Pear Purée

The ingredient you need is a medium butternut squash and a ripe pear.

  • Peel the butternut squash, split into two, remove the seeds, and then chop the rest into tiny pieces.
  • Steam the chopped butternut squash for about 12 minutes.
  • Peel, cut, and chop the pear.
  • Add the pear to the steamer where the butternut squash is and leave it to cook for another 5 minutes.
  • Pour the steamed butternut squash and pear into a blender and leave it to puree.
  • Serve.

Homemade Foods for 9 to 12 Months Old Babies

Babies that are 9 to 12 months can eat chunkier purees and mashes. They can also eat or drink dairy products (if they are not allergic to them) such as yogurt and cheese. Finely minced adult foods are perfect to introduce to babies of this age grade.

Examples of homemade foods for this age grade include Baby beef stew and Quinoa banana mash.

Baby Beef Stew

You need the following ingredients to make this dish. They include half-pound beef chunks (boneless), two teaspoons of olive oil, half size of small onions, ten baby carrots, and one medium Yukon gold potato.

  • Pour the olive oil into a pot and apply medium or high heat.
  • Put the beef chunks and let sear till each side turns brown (2-3 minutes).
  • Peel and chop the onions, carrots, and potatoes, then add them into the pot with a cup of water.
  • Stir the mixture and wait for it to reach a boiling point.
  • Reduce the heat from high/medium to low, cover the pot and let it cook for the next 75 minutes.
  • Puree in a food processor till it reaches a smooth and desired texture.
  • Serve.

Quinoa Banana Mash

The ingredients you need include half a bunch of bananas, a pinch of cinnamon, three tablespoons of cooked quinoa, and one tablespoon of whole milk yogurt.

  • Put the banana in a bowl and start mashing it.
  • Once you mash it to a smooth texture, add the remaining ingredients and stir.
  • Serve.

Babies less than a year old require softer and more nutritional diets. The problem with pre-made ingredients is that it loses nutrients during processing. All you need to create these homemade foods are a blender and some basic cooking supplies.

Start making these homemade baby foods and watch your children grow healthier than their compatriots.

The best way to enjoy this dish is with fire-roasted corn, so if you haven’t started grilling yet this year, my Cajun corn salad recipe is a good way to jump-start the grilling season. There are lots of different ways to enjoy grilled corn, but I love getting chard kernels that add more intense flavour from the fire.

Tips On Mincing And Dicing

When mincing garlic or dicing onions, it’s always important to remember to keep the bulbs intact until you are nearly through chopping them up. For the onion, first cut it down the middle and start with half the union, flat on the cutting board. For the garlic, slice your cloves up the same way you would an onion and then mince using a rocking motion with your blade.

How To Fire Roast Corn

Fire roasting corn on the grill yields such spectacular results, I recommend doing it whenever possible. There are two ways you can cook corn with a BBQ grill. The first is on the grill. Take a whole ear of shucked corn and lay it across a well-greased grill to let it get that nice dark char. You don’t want to burn it, just singe it a little bit, then go ahead and flip it over to get the other side. Another way, if you have a charcoal grill, is to butter up the corn, wrap it in foil, and lay it in the barbecue next to the hot coals. You can leave them there while you cook the rest of your meal on the grill. Add your seasonings to the buttered corn before you wrap it for the best results.

Ingredients

For 3 cups fire roasted corn, you will need about 4 -6 ears of corn, shucked and silk removed.

Fire Roasted Corn

Instructions

Preheat the BBQ grill at high (between 450-650°F) for at least 12 minutes. Brush the grill grates with olive oil or apply Pam or brush the ears of corn with olive oil on all sides, and season with salt and pepper.

When you grill has preheated, place the corn on the grill turning the ears every 2 minutes on each side until they are cooked evenly about 8-10 minutes.

Take the corn off the BBQ grill, place on a cutting board, and and strip the corn kernels off the cob with a sharp knife. You might need to wear oven mitts or tongs to hold the corn in place because it’s hot. Put the kernels in a large bowl.

Mickey Mouse Wine Cork Craft

5

This Mickey Mouse wine cork craft uses real or fake cork. It doesn’t matter. You also don’t have to be a wine drinker in order to do this craft. You can buy corks for crafting purposes, just like any other craft medium.

Mickey Mouse Wine Cork Craft

One of my favorite crafting materials happens to be the wine cork. Part of that is because the material itself is so easily repurposed into so many different types of products. Another angle is in the original use of the wine cork. Wine so often serves as a source of inspiration. So the remaining cork at the end of a bottle of wine is a fitting symbol to use as a crafting medium. The irony is that the more corks you end up with, the less you are likely to do with them. Of course, you can always save them up slowly over time.

An Easy Way to Add Magic to Your Kitchen

Disney sells a lot of home goods. In particular, they offer ways to supply and decorate your kitchen. This Mickey Mouse wine cork craft is a terrific way to add a dose of Disney flair to your kitchen. It could be the start of a collection of character corks or you might choose to stick to the iconic mouse. It’s easy to make a Mickey Mouse wine cork craft using the right tools. It starts with the ears of course and then the classic red black and white paint colors. If you want to be a stickler, you may have to do some testing to arrive at Disney’s proprietary blend for the red in Mickey Mouse’s shorts.

Extra Credit for Using Disney Wine Corks!

If you want to be extra authentic, use a cork from the Disney family of wines. These include wines from Fess Parker (davy Crockett) the MacMurray Estate, Chappellet, Skywalker, Silverado, Frank Family Vineyards, and of course Kurt Russel GOGI Wines.

Wilderness Camping Tips For Families And Couples

2

There are many ways to have a memorable and fun wilderness camping experience. The following are some tips and things you can do to make this a great camping experience for families or for couples wishing a romantic getaway.

Wilderness Camping Tips For Families

How Do You Prepare For Wilderness Camping?

It’s an incredible experience! Wilderness camping is one of the greatest outdoor experiences possible. For starters, a person or a group of people get to rely on themselves and the land to survive for days or even weeks. Some people take very limited supplies to survive on while others pack as much as they can. It’s a good idea to plan ahead, bring all the necessary supplies, and prepare for all scenarios. In the end, you can have a great backcountry camping trip with your family, your better half, or a few friends.

Always plan the trip out ahead of time

If you don’t plan the entire trip out beforehand, then you could find yourself in a lot of trouble. For starters, you could find yourself short on supplies and days away from your destination. Failure to plan ahead can easily lead to missing supplies and other necessary items. At all times, a lack of preparation is just begging for something to go wrong during a wilderness camping trip. You won’t be near civilization, so it’s a pretty bad idea to risk anything happening out in the middle of nowhere.

Focus on food, water, shelter, and practical items

You should work on minimizing the weight you have to carry on the trip while maximizing the amount of supplies you can bring. Sure, that might sound pretty impossible, but it’s fairly easy. Food and water take up a lot of space if you are bringing along cans of food or bottles of water. You should go with MREs (meal-ready-to-eat) for food because they are lightweight but pack a lot of food. On top of that, you should bring water packets or a small filter-pitcher combo to get water from natural sources. Bringing a sturdy but somewhat small tent is a smart idea. Plus, you have to pack tools like an axe, shovel, and other items. Decrease weight while increasing the amount of supplies you have in any way possible.

Pack a couple changes of clothes only

Without a doubt, you don’t need tons and tons of clothes to camp out in the middle of nowhere. It’s best to only bring 1 to 3 changes of clothes, depending upon how long you will be out there. You shouldn’t be worried about smelling great because it’s tough work camping in the forest, mountains, desert or wherever. Of course, clothes take up a lot of space and add a lot of weight to your back, so you shouldn’t take too many changes of clothes on a camping trip.

Bring a firearm or bow if possible

More than likely, you won’t have to worry about defending yourself from animals or anything else. It’s still a great idea to take along a gun or some type of bow – if the area you are camping in permits such weapons. These items can be used to hunt for food or in self-defense. So then, a firearm or bow of some sort is just a smart idea because these weapons serve practical purposes out in the middle of nowhere. Just remember to check the firearm rules of the area you are camping in.

Bring a long-range radio for safety purposes

For the most part, you should always be within range of a radio if you aren’t camping hundreds of miles away from civilization. At the very least, you should be able to get a park ranger on the radio if you bring a long-range radio along. Thirty to fifty miles is a good range for campers that run into an emergency. You might not always be in range, but you should be able to get in range of another person within a few hours unless you travel thirty or forty miles per day. During the trip, you will want to keep the radio turned off and only use it if an emergency pops up.

Wilderness Camping Tips

7 Tips For Wilderness Camping

Wilderness camping is by no means easy, so here are some tips for having a fun and enjoyable trip.

1. Brings lots of fun food

A lot of people enjoy fun food at their camping experience. For instance you could bring marshmallows so that you can roast them over the open camp fire. You can also bring the makings of s’mores, which a lot of people find very fun. You can make your own popcorn over the fire. Try all different sorts of items.

2. Brings equipment to play sports

A lot of people enjoy playing sports. You can simply bring a ball to throw around. Alternatively, you can set up an entire game of some sort of sport.

3. Go on beautiful nature hikes

Nature hikes can be a lot of fun in the wilderness. Before you go, make sure you know all about any trails in the area and the safe places to go.

4. Sit around the campfire and tell stories

A lot of people find it very fun to tell stories around the campfire. You can tell every person to prepare a story so that you can all take turns. They can be scary or tame if you have young children. Another fun idea would be to have people taking turns telling funny tales from their past. You can also tell jokes or riddles. You might be able to keep everyone laughing for hours.

5. Have a scavenger hunt

A scavenger hunt can be a very fun activity to do when camping in the wilderness. Make sure that you gear this to whatever age the participants are. You could have some sort of prize at the end for the winners.

6. Leave distractions and real-life stress at home

You might not have a fun time if you bring all of your work from home. Also, it might not be as fun if half of your people are on their cell phones with work, playing their own video games, and so forth. You may want to leave at home these things which may stress you or take time away from fun camping activities.

7. Make sure to be prepared and bring all safety items

You won’t have fun if something happens and you are not prepared. Come armed with everything you need so you can focus on fun and know everything else is taken care of.

A wilderness camping trip can be a lot of fun. Consider the above tips to help you with this.

Friends hiking in the mountains

How To Go Wilderness Camping In The Mountains

One of the most exhilarating types of wilderness camping is when you go up into the mountains. This is because of the breathtaking panoramas, the change in temperature and oxygen levels, and because everything around you is just so absolutely different from where you live. On the other hand, wilderness camping in the mountains is far more dangerous than any other place except for the extreme desert, so you have to be even more cautious than you would have to be otherwise.

Mountain Weather

To go wilderness camping in the mountains, you should first familiarize yourself with mountain weather by going camping in a campground in the mountains first; in fact, you may want to do so for an entire season. This is because it’s difficult to describe to someone just how differently your body feels when moving into higher altitudes.

Where Should I Camp In The Mountains?

Next, when you do head into the wilderness, don’t start out with the mountain top, instead, choose a place that is more like foothills than mountains, and that is within walking distance of a campground or ranger station. Or in other words, start out with training wheels.

Granted, it’s a difficult thing to do once you decide you want to go wilderness camping; to hold yourself back. But, if you feel that tug, just remind yourself of how many others have given in to that temptation and have found themselves in deep trouble because they were caught by surprise and didn’t know what to do, or didn’t have the proper gear.

Wilderness Camping Tips For Families And Couples

How Bad Can The Weather Be In The Mountains?

And that’s the next thing. Before you ever set foot on some bit of mountain wilderness, convince yourself of this one fact. The weather can get far worse, far faster than you can ever imagine, when in the mountains. Anyone that’s done any camping in the mountains can tell you all about this. A nice warm spring day can end up in a snow or ice storm.

Or vice versa. It’s just that unpredictable. This means that you have to assume the worst when camping in the mountains, which means brining gear for the worst possible scenario. This doesn’t mean lugging up snow equipment in the milled of July of course, but it does mean knowing that the temperature can get a lot lower than you might expect, so having warm clothes would only make sense.

Bring A GPS

The next thing is, because of advances in technology, there is no reason for anyone to go wilderness camping in the mountains without a GPS device that both sends and receives signals. Having one of these little gadgets makes it almost impossible to get lost, and if you do get lost anyway or get hurt and can’t walk, it will show others exactly where you are.

Do Your Homework

And finally, as with any other wilderness camping, do your homework. Learn everything you can about the area where you will be; where the ranger stations are, where towns and roads are; average temperatures, types of wildlife you may encounter, etc. And then, only go wilderness camping in the mountains or anywhere else, after you’ve learned how either through safe camping experiences or from someone else who really knows what they are doing.

Wilderness Camping Tips For Couples

How To Make Wilderness Camping A Romantic Getaway

Though it might not be for everyone, wilderness camping can be for some couples, one of the most romantic getaways imaginable. Imagine sitting side by side, arms around one another, sipping wine or beer while gazing into the warmth of a campfire. This is what wilderness camping can be for couples who are looking for time alone away from all the other distractions in life, so long as you plan it well.

Planning A Wilderness Camping Romantic Getaway

One of the key ingredients in almost any good romantic getaway, is good planning, and wilderness camping is no exception. This is because with good planning, you can have those peaceful moments together, but without it, you could find you and your loved one lost, cold, wet or just plain miserable.

Wilderness camping requires careful planning, there’s just no two ways about it; at least if you want to have a good time. Also, it should be done with common sense. For example, a wilderness camping trip as a romantic escape should never happen in a place where neither person has camped before. That’s just asking for disaster.

Also, it should generally not be done unless either or both people have some experience with wilderness camping; this should go without saying, because learning to camp in the wilderness is something that happens over many outdoor excursions. To have a romantic camping trip, someone has to know what they are doing or things won’t go smoothly, to say the least.

Weather

Also, to have a good getaway, you need to have good weather. If romance is what you’re after, check the weather reports very carefully. Nothing dampens a wilderness camping experience more than rain. Also, be cognizant of the time of year and average and expected temperatures.

Camping when it’s ninety degrees or higher is no more fun than is camping in the rain. Neither is camping with a forest full of gnats or biting flies. Know your camping site and when it’s best to go there. What you’re after is pleasant temperatures, sunny skies, little to no bugs and lots of dry wood for your campfire. Oh, and a beautiful vista wouldn’t hurt.

Comfort

Also, comfort is a pretty big deal when you’re talking romance, both in the tent and when out and around it, so bring something comfortable to sit on, and make sure you will both be very comfortable when in the tent. Also make sure the tent is big enough so you won’t get tangled up when you’re not sleeping.

Premade Meals

Plus, have all of your meals planned and either premade or simple, such as a steak on a stick cooked over the fire.

The idea is to set things up in such a way as to not have to make any decisions, to do as little work as possible, and to know how things will go so that you won’t have to be figuring things out as you go. And then, get yourselves out there and let it happen, easily and naturally as nature intended.

Wilderness Camping Tips For Couples

Thousands of people trek out into the wilderness each year to camp out for a few days or even a couple weeks. It’s a thrill to get out into the middle of nowhere and survive on somewhat limited supplies. Without a doubt, it takes a very skilled and resourceful person, couple, or group of people to make a successful wilderness trip. Still, anyone can enjoy wilderness camping if they like being outdoors!

12 Surprising Facts About Babies

1

Most women have them at some point in their lives. They keep the world going ‘round’. They’re born every 3 seconds. They poo a lot, scream a lot, and deprive you of sleep, and then the next minute, they’re smiling like a Cheshire cat. That’s babies for you. Here are a few interesting and surprising facts about babies. And be warned, they have more to teach us than you first thought. These facts will hopefully have you looking at your bundle of joy in a new light.

smiling baby

Fun Facts About Babies

If you’re a recent mom, you probably know all there is to know (and more!) about bottle feeding, breastfeeding, and diaper changing. But here are a few baby things you might not know. For instance, the most children one woman has ever had in a lifetime is – get this – 69. Mrs. Vassilyev, a Russian woman, gave birth to 16 sets of twins, 7 sets of triplets and 4 sets of quadruplets between 1725 and 1765!

1. Heavy baby heads

Approximately one quarter of your little bambino’s weight is made up of their head.

2. Eating fish = mega baby brains

The best snack you can give your baby is, in fact, fish. Eating more fish during your pregnancy improves brain function in babies. We all know eating fish is supposed to boost our brain power. What’s more, eating fish will provide them with better communication skills. It’s all about the fish, baby!

3. Men have more diaper changing know-how than women

That’s right. Men, not women, are best at changing a baby’s diaper. A recent survey revealed men take just over 1 minute while women can take over 2 minutes. What’s that about?!

4. May babies are heavier

Research has shown children born in the month of May are more than 200 grams weightier at birth than children born in any other month. Surely given all the holiday eating, one would think that January sees the heaviest babies.

5. Babies are smaller than a grain of rice

That is to say when they’re in the womb at four weeks old!

12 Surprising Facts About Babies

6. Smiling is your baby’s favourite exercise

Babies are born to smile. We know this because blind babies also smile, so it’s not just copying.

7. Bony babies

Scientific facts about babies that you might now know about! When born, babies have 300 bones, but by adulthood, they only have 206. This is because some bones fuse together. Ugh!

8. No Kneecaps

At birth, your little one is kneecapless! Well, technically speaking, they have a structure of cartilage that looks a lot like kneecaps. They don’t develop them until after six months.

9. A turned head = a full belly

Your bambino didn’t just see something exciting. If they turn their head at a spoonful of food, it’s because they’re full.

10. As strong as an ox

This is one interesting facts about babies! Pound for pound, your little papoose is stronger than loads of animals, an oxen being the best example of matching strength. Your little super baby has mega-strong legs.

11. Babies come first

Even when they’re in the womb, your baby is numero uno, dinnertime included. Using the umbilical, they take the nutrients they need and leave mum the rest. That’s why it’s so crucial for a woman to eat healthily during pregnancy.

12. Uber – advanced hearing

Your baby is born with ultra sophisticated hearing and can work out where a sound is coming from just 10 minutes after being born.

12 Surprising Facts About Babies

From the very moment she or he is born, your little cherub is capable of so much. These are just a few ways a baby demonstrates his or her brilliance. So, remember (and treasure!) these 12 amazing facts about your baby, beautiful and brainy miracle of life.

It is always easiest to maintain plants that are native to your area. Not only will the results be better because they are meant for your specific soil and climate conditions, they will be helping the native environment of your area. Many animals depend on the seeds or shelter of native plants and can not use a substitute. For example, the Monarch butterfly depends on having milkweed plants for their developing caterpillars. Without these plants, the Monarch population would be decimated. Do some research and find out what plants fit this bill. They are native, hearty, and have a WOW factor that appeals to you or your children. In Ottawa, you can find out more about the over 1,000 different native plants in the area.

Have Your Children Help Grow Vegetables

A great way to encourage children to garden is to have them help you grow them. I have found that it is true, if a child helps prepare vegetables, they are more likely to eat them. If you grow a salad in your yard every year, you will notice that your kids are willing to eat some of the crop, especially if they picked it. Vegetables growing is a great first garden experience for children. They are meant to grow fast and the rewards of a fresh veggie at the end is a great way to encourage future gardening.

Stay away from any type of veggie that needs to be babied. In Ottawa, these vegetables grow easily:

  • tomatoes
  • lettuce
  • cucumbers
  • pumpkins
  • radishes
  • peppers
  • zucchini
  • peas

Kids love hunting through the tomato plants in search of the perfect tomato. If you plant some grape or cherry tomatoes, the kids can pick them off the vine, run them under water, and pop them in their mouths right away. You can tell them to feel how warm they are and full of sunshine. They love it. Even when my kids were younger, who usually doesn’t eat tomatoes, will eat the ones they picked. One of their favourite chores was taking a tiny basket out to the garden to fill with grape tomatoes for dinner.

No Harsh Chemicals and Insecticides

Another thing to stay away from is harsh chemicals and insecticides. I don’t put anything on my plants and they do just fine. I figure if it isn’t hardy enough to make it alone, I don’t need it. A plant that isn’t doing so well can be yanked out and retried another year. The goal here is to encourage the kids, not expose them to chemicals.

Children Love To Plant Giant Sunflowers

One of the best plants for encouraging children to garden and make it a WOW moment are giant sunflowers. They grow so quickly, you can practically see it happening! Have the kids measure it’s growth every week. That way they get to practice some math skills as well. Once the sunflower has gone to seed, it will be covered with seeds that are well loved by birds and squirrels alike. Before getting rid of the dead stalk, cut off the seed head and place it in a tree or under a bush. It becomes an instant bird feeder.

Read Gardening Books With Your Children

Another way to encourage children to become interested is by reading books about gardening. One of my favourites is Growing Vegetable Soup by Lois Ehlert. It is a simple book that talks about the tools used in the garden and uses proper terminology about gardening. It also tells about the planting and harvesting of vegetables for making vegetable soup.

20 Must Have Items You Need In Your Labour Bag

This is a checklist of 20 of the most commonly recommended must have items you need in your labour bag.

What Should You Pack In Your Labour Bag?

Packing for a baby is hard enough, but anticipating your own needs after birth can seem impossible. But, far more of your hospital stay will occur after the birth of your baby, and packing to become a mother is often a challenge of the unknown. This list of basic items to bring in your maternity bag will come in handy!

1. Non-Soda Drinks

As milk production begins, the body’s requirements for fluid increases leading to an unquenchable thirst. Breastfeeding women need a constant supply of water or other nourishing fluids, but should avoid sugary soda drinks, which cause dehydration.

2. Snacks To Pack In Your Labour Bag

A breastfeeding woman craves fuel for her increased metabolic rate and even the best hospital meals will not suffice. Stock some of your favourite, energy dense snacks preferably with high complex carbohydrate content (low GI) for sustained energy.

3. Magazines, Puzzles, and Pens

Life with a newborn is divided into three hour cycles of change-eat-sleep leaving you with the odd quiet time. You may sleep, but, if not, weariness often limits your activities to puzzles, magazines, or television. Don’t forget to put pens in your maternity bag.

4. Pear Juice And Kiwi Fruit

A daily glass of pear juice or a kiwi fruit (skin on) are a gentler cure for constipation than prunes or laxatives. After giving birth, the last thing you need is to strain.

5. Wheat Bags And Ice Packs

After delivery, there are areas requiring soothing warmth or cold. Most hospitals will not provide hot packs due to medico-legal fears of burns, but your own gel packs can be heated or cooled as required. Make sure to add some to your birthing bag essentials.

6. Comfortable Not Frumpy

Socially speaking, your popularity peaks after birth, but physically it is a transitional time; no longer pregnant you are still a way from your pre-pregnancy physique. It will do your psyche no good to feel frumpy while receiving visitors, so pack maternity outfits which make you feel comfortable but attractive.

7. Watch

Time becomes meaningless in the maternal dimension, so taking a watch not only anchors you to the outside world, but is essential to time the contractions, for time feeds, and visiting hours. It’s easier to check the time when you have a watch on your wrist versus grabbing your cell phone all the time.

8. Maternity Pads

They’re big, ugly, and essential especially with tampons off-limits. Lochia, or the bleeding after birth, can be surprisingly heavy. Take two boxes of the brand recommended by friends and some old underwear in your hospital labour bag.

9. Breast Pads

A good breast pad can be the difference between comfort and embarrassment especially when receiving visitors. As your milk comes in your breasts will engorge and leak until supply adjusts to your baby’s demands.

10. Seamless Nursing Bra or Sport Tops

In the first few days your breasts enlarge at a staggering rate, initially outstripping your maternity bras. Seamless nursing bra or lycra-based sports tops have no underwires, can provide flexible support, and are comfortable for sleeping.

11. Hair Elastic For Wrist

Pack a few hair elastics even if you have short hair. They are worn around the wrist and swapped from side to side to indicate which breast should be started on at the next feed; it is easy to lose track in the fog.

12. Phone Numbers And Cell Phone

From your parental cocoon, you can share news via phone or text message. Take a list of phone numbers and your cell phone, but check the rules regarding use of mobile phones in your hospital.

13. Triangular Pillow Or Bean Bag

Most women form a close relationship with a favourite pillow or bean-bag during pregnancy. This old friend is useful to facilitate breastfeeding, or to help mom get comfortable after birth.

14. Camera / Video

Pack your cameras, chargers, and spare batteries in your labour bag and if the equipment is new try it out before time.

15. Earplugs And Eye Shades

Adjusting to your baby’s routine means sleep must be taken opportunistically, day or night. Earplugs and eyeshades help to tune out the hustle and bustle of the hospital.

16. Extra Bag

In many ways, you will be bringing home more than you took to hospital! But with all the cards, gifts, and post-birth paraphernalia, take an extra bag or two to transport your new family home.

17. Packet Cloth Diapers

Whether you decide on cloth or disposable diapers, you should invest in an extra packet of plain cloth diapers. These all-purpose gems can be used as change mats, clothing-protectors, makeshift bibs, and wipes.

18. Onesies

It is tempting to pack all of the adorable baby outfits you have bought, but the reality is that newborns spend most of their time swaddled and clothing becomes all about accessibility and ease – in other words; pack at least 5 onesies in your labour bag for baby.

19. Muslin Or Flannel Wraps

Wraps or ‘blankies’ are invaluable companions for use in swaddling, covering baby in the pram, a shoulder protector, playmate, modesty cover while feeding, or any one of 50 other uses. The wraps are essential items to add in your labour bag. The choice of muslin or flannel is seasonal.

20. Baby Book

Memories are quickly formed and lost amongst the constant activity of these first weeks unless they are recorded as they occur, so pack a journal or baby book in which to record feelings and paste mementos.

What To Expect After Labour and Delivery

Once you’ve passed through the labour and delivery stage, your journey as a mother to a newborn baby starts. Aside from taking good care of your baby, it’s essential to have time for yourself.

Most women have problems with their post-baby tummies, which can take time to go back to their previous size. Using a binder can help hasten this process. Stretch marks can also appear under skin folds of the stomach and upper thighs. You might want to try commercial products available in cream or lotion to lighten stretch marks.

After giving birth, mothers experience discharge, incontinence, and bleeding for several days or weeks. Wearing the right underwear after delivery or postpartum underwear is important to protect you from leaks, providing you with the utmost support you need. Postpartum panties also keep large pads in place. But launder your undergarments properly and air-dry them, thus making your underwear last longer.

Takeaway

Getting ready for your labour and delivery is important, ensuring you’ve got everything for you and your baby’s comfort, health, and well-being. Prepare the items above at least a month before your expected due date. This will give you enough time to shop and check the quality, quantity, and proper functioning of each item. Keep your labour bag in an easy-to-access area, so you can grab it right away when you need it.

These 20 must have items should definitely be in your hospital bag!
