Understanding Canada’s Mortgage Rates

Canadians have enjoyed some of the lowest mortgage rates ever experienced over the last decade. Now that rates are on the rise again, homeowners may be worried about how higher mortgage payments will impact their lives.

Understanding what affects mortgage rates can be a relief. Read on to gain more knowledge of how interest rates are determined and where they’re headed.

Understanding Canada's Mortgage Rates

Securing Your Future

Home purchases are a life-altering financial decision that should be carefully thought through. Understanding mortgage rates will enable you to make informed choices for your future and help make the best choice available to you. With interest rates constantly fluctuating, keeping up is crucial if you wish to find your ideal property!

Mortgage rates can be affected by multiple factors, but one key influencer is the Bank of Canada’s policy interest rate. The BoC’s interest rate establishes the prime lending rate which lenders use when setting variable and fixed mortgage rates – this often results in similar or identical prime lending rates among lenders who will then adjust them according to overnight Bank rates.

Since the mortgage market is so competitive, it’s essential that you shop around for the best rate. Furthermore, getting pre-approved will give you an idea of the maximum amount that you can afford and will narrow your home search significantly. Finally, monitoring your credit score regularly and improving any negative items affecting it could save thousands in interest over time!

Interest rates have steadily been on an upward trend across the United States in 2022 and into 2023, and are projected to keep climbing through 2023. Mortgage costs will likely increase significantly and may threaten household affordability.

No matter whether your loan has a variable or fixed rate, it is vitally important that you stay abreast of its movement to safeguard yourself against future increases. A website which regularly updates can ensure you remain aware of current interest rates.

Hybrid or combination rate mortgages provide borrowers with ways to offset rising interest rates, by offering both variable and fixed rate components of the loan loan balance – providing protection from future increases while still taking advantage of any decreases that might come their way in future years.

Understanding the Variable Rate

Variable rate mortgages were popular during the COVID-19 pandemic due to low borrowing costs; however, with rates increasing quickly since taking out such a mortgage they may now find their monthly mortgage payments increasing significantly.

Mortgage rates move with the Bank of Canada’s policy interest rate, more commonly known as the overnight rate. Banks use it as a benchmark when deciding how much to lend each other and since the COVID-19 pandemic began in 2019, banks have kept this benchmark low to try and combat inflation while supporting economic growth.

According to changes made by the Bank of Canada to its overnight rate, lenders will adjust their prime mortgage rate accordingly, thus leading to variable mortgage rates going up or down.

An integral factor of variable mortgage rates lies with how much of a down payment borrowers make on their home purchase. The minimum down payment requirement in Canada is currently set at 5%; this helps reduce mortgage size while eliminating costly mortgage insurance premiums. Usually, higher down payments tend to result in lower mortgage rates.

Another factor is how long a borrower plans on keeping their mortgage. Some opt for fixed rate mortgages for the entirety of their loan term while others may prefer variable rate loans that may have more short-term volatility than fixed. Unfortunately, early prepayment penalties could cost borrowers thousands in additional expenses.

No matter which mortgage product a person opts for, rates can change quickly and dramatically. To help keep track of mortgage rates accurately and maintain accurate information on changes over time – basis points (0.01%). When looking at increasing or decreasing mortgage rates over time. A daily bulletin from an established source such as CIBC provides accurate updates. It also displays current mortgage rates while detailing changes that have happened over time in terms of “basis points.” A basis point represents one hundredth of one percent (0.01%). As the amount changes increases or decreases more significantly – more basis points will reflect any significant rate change over time – more likely it is.

Understanding the Fixed Rate

As its name implies, a fixed mortgage rate remains constant throughout its entirety – unlike other forms with adjustable interest rates. Fixed-rate loans are among the most sought-after in Canada’s six banks, who tend to offer them competitively; 5-year fixed rates currently range between 2.7% – 3.0%.

Attributes that distinguish an ideal mortgage rate depend on your specific circumstances. A low rate means lower overall interest payments over time while higher rates could potentially cost more than its value. When considering purchasing new property, checking current interest rates is the easiest way to assess whether you can afford it or not.

Mortgage rates in Canada can be driven by several different influences, but one of the key ones is the Bank of Canada’s policy interest rate (also referred to as overnight rate). When the Bank raises it, prime mortgage rates also tend to increase accordingly and variable mortgage rates drop accordingly.

Predicting mortgage rates in Canada can be challenging due to multiple variables that influence them on a daily basis, but you can use trends over time as an indication of where mortgage rates may be headed.

As your mortgage term lengthens, interest costs will grow more as lenders assume more risk by loaning more money to you. A longer-term mortgage will typically have higher rates due to this increased exposure for lenders.

Canadian law stipulates a minimum down payment requirement of 5% when purchasing a home; however, many first-time buyers find this to be insufficient. A larger down payment can significantly reduce debt load and help avoid expensive mortgage insurance premiums. Mortgage brokers are available to assist in calculating how much of a down payment you need while also offering exclusive rates not accessible directly through lenders.

Understanding Canada's Mortgage Rates

Forecast for Mortgage Rates in Canada

Experts predict that mortgage rates are likely to keep trending downward in the short term due to Bank of Canada’s decision not to raise rates anytime soon and inflation’s decline, making an unlikely prospect of raising them again anytime soon.

As mortgages typically extend over three to five year terms, your interest rate will tend to fluctuate more as market forces change. Therefore, if you want to minimize risk by locking in a fixed rate for some time period such as three or five years it might make more sense to go with shorter mortgage terms such as three to five years.

Though mortgage rates remain uncertain in the short term, experts believe they will eventually rise once the economy improves and the Bank of Canada gains more confidence to increase interest rates. Now is an excellent time to get preapproved with your preferred lender so you know your rate options clearly and can act swiftly when finding your ideal property!

The Bank of Canada’s overnight lending rate serves as the baseline rate for variable-rate mortgages offered by banks across Canada, while each individual institution sets its own prime lending rate which may differ between institutions; for instance TD’s current prime lending rate stands at 6.70% while Scotiabank and BMO offer variable rate mortgages at 5.75% respectively.

Many are feeling the ripple effects of higher rates in real-time, especially those who rely on variable-rate mortgages. TD Stories recently featured a video depicting one family navigating increased mortgage costs and its effects on household budgets.

As we head into spring, Perch expects fixed rates will decrease slightly while variable rates remain flat, due to Bank of Canada pause in rate hikes which has resulted in five-year Government of Canada bond yields falling (which directly impact mortgage rates). But Perch does not believe interest rates will remain elevated for too long as many economists predict central bank will cut rates again next year as part of an effort to stimulate economy and boost homebuyer trust.

Forecast for mortgage rates in Canada suggest that rates will remain low in the near future, though some economists predict that a rise could occur in 2024, making it important to understand your options now and stay informed of market changes.

First-Time Homebuyer’s Guide to Buying a House

Buying a home for the first time is a major milestone in life, and it’s not an easy thing to accomplish. It can take years of hard work and saving, and when you’re finally ready to settle down and buy your first home, you’ve got a whirlwind of viewings, offers, and inspections ahead of you. If it all feels like a bit much, we’ve got your guide to buying your first house in Ottawa.

The First-Time Homebuyer's Guide to Buying a House in Ottawa

#1 Saving Your Down Payment

Your down payment is the amount of money you have to put upfront to buy your home. The rest of the funds come from your mortgage, but first, you need a sizable lump sum. A down payment is usually between 5-20% of the value of the house. The CMHC requires that homebuyers pay more for mortgage default insurance if their down payment is less than 20%, and mortgage default insurance is not available on homes that cost more than $1 million.

The first step is often the longest, but there are several tools you have at your disposal to speed up the process of saving for a down payment. This includes contributing to a First Home Savings Account (FHSA), your TFSA, and even your RRSP.

#2 Getting Mortgage Pre-Approval

Most first-time homebuyers will need a significant loan beyond their down payment to buy the rest of their home. When you’re making bids on houses, you don’t have time to seek out mortgage approval for every separate house, which is why you get mortgage pre-approval.

Mortgage pre-approval is not a guarantee that you will secure the mortgage you want, but it tells you what you’re likely to be approved for, helping you make more informed decisions about the kind of properties you can afford. Mortgage pre-approval will tell you:

  • How big of a loan the mortgage lender will approve.
  • How much you can afford in a home.
  • The interest rate you can expect.
  • The size of your monthly mortgage payment.

#3 Starting Your House Hunt

Now comes the fun part. While house hunting can feel stressful once you’ve committed to buying a home, this is also the part where you get to imagine all of the possibilities.

Your real estate broker is a great source for home listings, but most homebuyers will also want to look for themselves. When you’re looking for a house for sale in Ottawa, you can find tons of listings online. Realtors today list properties on multiple sites where you can view photos, price, location, and details.

To avoid getting overwhelmed, there are a few criteria you can use to narrow down your search. Location is the best place to start. The perfect location for you depends on the life you’re planning. If you’re looking for the maximum amount of space you can afford, check out some of the city’s more affordable suburbs, like Orléans, Barrhaven, Nepean, and Kanata, or towns out in the Ottawa Valley.

If you’re looking for a starter condo or a more urban lifestyle, up-and-coming neighbourhoods like Hintonburg-Mechanicsville, Carlington, and Beachwood are among the best in the city, with a mix of new condos and older fixer-uppers.

Ottawa

#4 Viewing Properties

This is where it pays to have a great real estate agent. You don’t need an agent to view properties, but they handle all of the logistics, including scheduling, and your agent should be a great source of information about the neighbourhood.

When it comes to viewing properties, most agents recommend limiting it to about 8-10 properties. Once you get past that limit, you’re going to start feeling exhausted, and many of the properties will start looking the same.

Appointments typically last between 30-60 minutes, and they’re often scheduled very last minute. That can make the whole viewing process stressful. When you’re serious about buying a home, it’s a good idea to limit your other commitments so that you can make it on a moment’s notice. While most viewings are going to take place on evenings and weekends, some sellers are more particular about scheduling viewings and may restrict the viewings to short or inconvenient windows, and there won’t be much you can do to change that.

It’s also good to keep in mind that if the property you’re looking into is tenanted, the seller is required to give the tenant 24-hour notice of a showing in Ontario, and you usually won’t be able to get in to see it earlier, regardless of the circumstances.

#5 Making an Offer

Once you find a property in your viewings that you absolutely love, it’s time to start making offers. This is another area where the expertise of your real estate agent will be invaluable. It can be very confusing whether the sellers are expecting a bidding war, are open to negotiating downward, or if they expect to sell for more or less the sticker price.

One piece of advice that some realtors share is to look at the bidding window. Sellers who accept bids at any time probably value their home at around the listing price, whereas sellers who are accepting bids on one night only generally expect a bidding war.

#6 Inspections and Conditions

A home inspection is a critical part of the buying process. Once you’ve had a bid accepted, it should still be contingent on a successful pre-purchase inspection, where a professional will visually evaluate the condition of the home.

They will identify any major issues that you should know about before you buy the property, including problems with the basement plumbing, cracks in the foundation, mould, water damage, the age and condition of the roof, and other essentials. It should be conducted by a licensed inspector.

Ottawa is an incredible place to buy your first home, raise a family, and put down roots. From saving for your downpayment to the pre-purchase inspection, plan your moves to find your dream home.

How to Host an Al Fresco Dinner Party in Canada

0

Aside from the occasional dreary spring day, the weather here in Canada looks to be warming up. For many, that means the advent of BBQ season – the all-Canadian pastime of rounding up friends and family, firing up the grill, and soaking in that vitamin-D-rich sunshine.

How to Host an Al Fresco Dinner Party in Canada

But Canada isn’t alone in this fresh air pastime. Particularly in Southern Europe, spring and summer is “al fresco” season (literally, “fresh air”), when loved ones and acquaintances congregate in the cool evening breeze to celebrate food and community.

Unlike our North American BBQs, which favour quick-grilling wieners and burgers, the food at an al fresco dinner party in Europe tends to be slow, methodical and from-scratch. And the décor is anything but slapdash – swapping paper plates and fold-up chairs for good cutlery and elegant table settings.

If you’re keen to switch up your summer cookout, consider hosting an al fresco dinner party with these straightforward tips.

Check the Long-Range Forecast

Item number one on the list is an obvious one: check the forecast! While Mediterranean countries like Greece and Spain can bank on warm weather through the summer months, we Canadians aren’t quite so lucky. You might still hit a flash downpour in Toronto or an unseasonably chilly evening in Vancouver.

Long-term weather forecasts are never 100% reliable, but they will give you a rough impression of safe days as you plan your al fresco dinner party. Further in the article, read about creating a contingency plan in case the weather turns sour at the last minute.

Learn About Mediterranean Cuisines

Mediterranean cuisines make the most sense for an al fresco dinner party. In cultures like Spain, Greece, Italy and Southern France, outdoor dining is practically a way of life, a philosophy. In these cultures, it’s all about stopping time, drinking in the fresh air (and a glass of wine or two), and sharing lovingly crafted food with your immediate community.

For inspiration on dishes, dining norms and food history, consult an authoritative online food wiki. The wiki linked to the right features painstakingly gathered information on cuisines from around the world, and makes a fantastic launchpad for learning the intricacies of al fresco dining.

Opt for Light, Bright and Satisfying Dishes

As you research, you’ll find information on Greek dinner party staples like moussaka and souvlaki, Italian dishes like risotto and cotoletta Milanese, and much more. What to choose!

When the weather is sunny, you can’t go wrong with light, bright dishes. Find main dishes that get a bump of bright flavour from citrus and fresh herbs. Pair satisfying slow-roasted meats with zippy salads. And let the olive oil flow, lending its grassy, herbaceous quality to your dishes.

To get you started, here are a few typical al fresco favourites that never fail to crack a smile:

  • Bistecca alla Fiorentina (steak done in the style of Florence)
  • Paella (Spanish rice laced with fresh seafood and spiked with lemon)
  • Greek salad with tangy feta (and a generous glug of Greek olive oil)
  • Turkish Kofte (grilled meatballs served alongside blistered peppers and tomatoes)
  • Panzanella (Italian tomato salad with crusty croutons and sharp red onion)

As always, work around your guests’ dietary restrictions to create a multi-course menu with something for everyone. If you’re attempting to serve more than three or four dishes, consider a mix of make-ahead items (like salads), slow-cooked centrepieces (like Greek lamb leg) and quick-cooking “a la minute” dishes (like paella).

How to Host an Al Fresco Dinner Party in Canada

Serve Food “Family Style” to Foster a Convivial Atmosphere

When it’s time to eat, resist the urge to shuffle your creations to a separate table. Rather than this “buffet line” approach to a dinner party, make the food front and centre!

Serve the meal family style by lining the centre of a long communal table with dishes. When guests break (literal) bread and pass along food to one another, it fosters a convivial atmosphere of togetherness – which is crucial for a Mediterranean al fresco dinner. Guests can chat, pour each other wine, and share in the joy of food.

Lean into Your Natural Environment with Décor, Table Settings

As for décor, lean into the natural outdoor setting. Instead of purchasing costly exotic flowers, take inspiration from your immediate surroundings.

Pluck a few branches from a nearby spruce tree and lay them on the table. Gather some trilliums from the garden to make a simple centrepiece. Or ask a local winery for grape leaf cuttings to reinforce the Mediterranean theme.

Keep Guests Safe from the Elements

As mentioned, you can plan for everything except the weather. As a responsible host, it’s your job to shield guests from all those undesirable elements that might get in the way of a good time.

Consider providing umbrellas to shade from the intense late afternoon sun. Light a few citronella candles to ward off mosquitos, black flies and other aerial pests. And develop an “indoor contingency plan” in case it rains (essentially, make sure you can comfortably seat your guests inside in a worst-case scenario).

Finally, as the late spring light dims around 8 pm, ensure that you have ample torches, lanterns or lights to guide your guests. Hanging string lights around a pergola or trellis is a particularly Mediterranean way to illuminate an outdoor party!

With these simple planning tips, you’re ready to throw the ultimate European al fresco dinner party. Be as creative or lenient as you like with the rules (i.e., you can require guests to wear all white to reinforce the garden party theme, or simply allow guests to come as they are). And feel free to add your personal touches to the décor. Buon appetito!

LEGO Pet Sets Review

Did you know LEGO has been creating fun for builders of all ages since 1932? Today, there are so many themes and sets to enjoy! This spring, LEGO introduced fun pet themed sets for builders to construct and play with! My family was asked to review how much we would dig these playsets.

Below are the LEGO pet sets we received to play with:

Simple Assembly and Set-up of LEGO Pet Sets

For my kids, it was bags and bags of multicoloured blocks of all different sizes for them to put together. With the help of the instruction booklet that accompanied each set, both of my older children found it easy to snap these structures together.

LEGO Pet Sets

Once the LEGO sets were assembled, my kids could not wait to jump in and start imagining with these LEGO playsets. Each one of them brought a different world of adventure and wonder to playtime when my kids played with them.

LEGO Friends Dog Rescue Centre Review

Help is on the way for pups great and small with the LEGO Dog Rescue Center. Builders can intake, care for and help LEGO doggies get better and find a new home with LEGO Friends Amber, Leo, and Dr. Gabriela Silva. This set is recommended for builders ages 7+.

LEGO Friends Dog Rescue Centre Review

The LEGO Friends Dog Rescue Centre is a modular set (you can take it apart and configure it in different ways) with plenty of places for my kids to allow their inner veterinarian out to play! My daughter LOVES dogs, so this playset was perfect for her to play with.

She loved how there was the option for two and four-legged friends to enter the centre. It was also nice that there were clear doors you could open that allowed for more light to enter this space. The “Adopt” sign is cute and inviting for LEGO Friends to want to adopt a pup that needs a home.

LEGO Friends Dog Rescue Centre

Dr. Gabriela Silva and Grace the Dog were a lot of fun to play with in the Exam Room. The variety of mini areas and instruments in this space alone are amazing for builders to use to help pups get better. We especially loved the exam bed and the magnifying glass (that really works!).

LEGO Friends Dog Rescue Centre

The slide that connects the two levels of this set is another fun touch LEGO thought of for kids to enjoy! We had Pickles with Dr. Silva at the top of the slide help Pickles go down this structure.

LEGO Friends Dog Rescue Centre

Amber was waiting at the bottom of the slide to catch Pickles to give this pup a bunch of cuddles.

LEGO Friends Autumn’s House Review

LEGO Friends’ character, Amber, and her friends welcome you to have adventures at LEGO Friends Autumn’s House! Builders can imagine experiencing a variety of activities with Amber, Leo, Aliya, and Amber’s Mom, Mia. From birdwatching and caring for Amber’s young foal, to cooking, eating, watching TV, and taking a snooze indoors, there’s no end to the fun with this playset! This set is recommended for builders 7+.

LEGO Friends Autumn’s House review

My kids and I found that there were many different places to play explore and play at Amber’s House. They loved how they were able to either play together or separately.

Amber was by her front door to welcome us into her home. The number of details the LEGO designers put into this area to make it feel like a home you would want to live in was amazing! The fall setting, the pumpkins around the house, the leaves on the house, and the large windows made us want to start our playtime fun inside.

LEGO Friends Autumn’s House

My daughter put Daisy on a couch to play in Amber’s Bedroom. It was so much fun to play in this space with Amber’s bed, a rug, a brush, and the pictures adorning the walls. Daisy even has a dog dish and water in this room to enjoy!

LEGO Friends Autumn’s House

We then played with Mia on the balcony of this playset. This was one of my favourite spaces because of how it was designed for fun! Birdwatchers would delight in the fact that there is a set of binoculars and a telescope mounted to a camera to capture nature around the home. The bird’s nest off to the side is a cute feature that makes us smile every time we see it, too!

LEGO Friends Autumn’s House

A High Recommendation for LEGO Pet Sets

My kids and I had a blast building and imagining with these LEGO Pet Sets. We loved how there are so many areas of play could be had with the LEGO Friends Dog Rescue set and the LEGO Friends Autumn’s House set. We highly recommend all of these sets for spring fun at home!

It is often used to add a bit of a punch to sliced fruit and vegetables such as watermelon, mango, jicama, pineapple, or cucumber.  It is also used to garnish a creamy corn dish called esquites that is made with mayonnaise and Cotjia (an aged Mexican cheese). For this Mexican candy shooter, Tajin will be gracing the rim of the glass with the help of simple syrup.

MEXICAN Candy SHOT RECIPE VARIATIONS

  • You can definitely used different flavoured schnapps such as strawberry schnapps or mango schnapps.
  • If you are looking for an alcohol-free alternative to watermelon pucker for this Mexican Candy Shot recipe, apple juice, orange juice, strawberry juice, pineapple juice, or a non-alcoholic vanilla can be substituted in its place.
  • You can double or triple the ingredients and pour over ice to make it into Mexican Candy Drink instead.

Understanding Sprinkler Systems: A Comprehensive Guide To Different Types Of Sprinklers

When it comes to fire safety, all commercial structures require adequate protection. Fire sprinkler systems are typically the most effective methods to protect your property and personnel from the dangers of fire outbreaks. However, due to the fact that each commercial building has distinct fire protection demands, it’s essential to install the type of fire sprinkler system that meets your specific needs and parameters.

Before we explore the different types of sprinkler systems that you can choose for your residential or commercial property, let’s go through some of the sprinkler system basics. Are you ready? Let’s jump into it.

What Are Fire Sprinkler Systems?

A fire sprinkler system is an automatic abatement system that contains the spread and growth of fire outbreaks. It does so by activating the discharge of water through a network of sprinkler nozzles affixed to a distribution piping system.

Once the surrounding temperature reaches 165 degrees Fahrenheit due to fire outbreaks, the sprinkler heads are activated to help in curbing the calamity. The active defence strategy of fire sprinkler systems protects the occupants and the firefighters in the event of a fire.

Generally, sprinkler systems have different operating mechanisms and applications. Therefore, it’s crucial to choose the best option that will meet your demands adequately.

The sprinkler systems are used in warehouses, commercial office spaces and restaurant dining areas, commercial kitchens, industrial settings, and family homes.

What are the Different Types of Sprinkler Systems?

The three commonest types of fire sprinkler systems include:

  1. Wet Fire Sprinkler System

While on the search for a fire sprinkler, you might have probably come across wet fire sprinklers. Wet sprinkler systems are the most popular fire protection systems on the market because they are easy to install and use.

They operate with continuous water passage through the system’s conduits. When a fire is detected, the interior of the sprinkler head in the affected area bursts due to the heat, discharging water only from that sprinkler head.

In contrast to dry sprinkler systems, not all sprinkler heads are activated simultaneously in a wet system, minimizing damage from false alarms and diverting water only to areas where a fire hazard exists.

This design reduces fire and water damage to other areas of your property. Ultimately, many commercial properties favour wet fire sprinkler systems due to their user-friendliness and straightforward activation mechanism.

  1. Dry Fire Sprinkler System

Pressurized air replaces water in the pipelines of the dry fire sprinklers, which are an alternative to the traditional wet system. In contrast to the wet system, the dry sprinkler only emits water when activated by sprinkler heads.

This feature is essential for unheated warehouses in colder regions, exterior parking lots, and other significant applications in which extremely low temperatures can cause pipes to freeze, despite the fact that it may delay fire response times.

Frequently, dry fire sprinkler systems include a quick-opening device to release pressurized air, increasing the water flow rapidly. The dry fire sprinkler system is generally ideal for applications where frozen pipes or other plumbing problems like burst pipes etc pose a more significant safety threat than the fire.

  1. Preaction Sprinkler System

The preaction sprinkler system combines the wet system’s flexibility with the dry system’s complexity to provide excellent safety for valuable assets in buildings such as libraries and museums.

Like dry sprinkler systems, preaction fire sprinklers are air-filled. Furthermore, it requires the fire detection event, such as activating a smoke or heat sensor, to remain active. This additional detection phase minimizes water damage from a false alarm or mechanical failure.

Preaction fire sprinkler systems are available in two primary variants:

Single Interlock

Single interlock preaction systems look similar to dry fire sprinkler systems, but the fire detection episode is significantly different. Typically, the single interlock systems are activated by a smoke detector or fire alarm, resulting in a quicker response time than dry systems, which only get activated in response to heat or fire detection. It reduces the usual delay time that is seen with dry fire sprinklers.

Double Interlock

Like single interlocks, double-preaction systems use the preceding fire detection event. In addition, they require an automatic sprinkler system. Before water is discharged from the system, the smoke detector and the sprinklers must be triggered.

Generally, double interlock systems are beneficial in areas where sprinkler system activation can cause extensive property damage. In the event of a false alarm, mechanical failure, or natural calamity, such as a broken sprinkler head or a burst conduit, the system will not activate, protecting the building’s valuable property.

Fire sprinkler systems, under regular servicing and maintenance, save lives and property by rapidly extinguishing fires and preventing it from spreading to cause significant property damage or injuries. That’s why it is very important to seek professional advice in time.

How to Potty Train a Boy

6

Preschool is looming in the not-so-distant future. Other parents are bragging about their toddler toilet training accomplishments. But is your toddler boy is ready to be potty trained? Let’s have a look at how to potty train a boy!

how to potty train a boy

If your son is still in diapers, going out to the store means lugging around diapers, wipes, and extra pairs of pants. Additionally, there doesn’t seem to be any interest in the toilet whatsoever. This is probably a very familiar scenario for parents of toddler boys who are itching to get them potty trained. Although some gentle pushing may be necessary, it is very important that the child is ready physically and mentally before pursuing these potty training tips.

How to Potty Train a boy?

When your two-year-old son starts pulling down his diaper or standing at the toilet to copy his father’s behaviour, you know he’s getting ready for potty training. Each child will vary in his readiness for undertaking this important task, so you can’t just expect every boy to be mature enough by age two or three, for example. If you are unsure when to begin this training, ask your family doctor’s opinion.

By age two or two-and-a-half, you may want to start shopping for a potty pot. Most children’s furniture stores carry them, and you may be able to get one that is reasonably priced from a department store as well. Let your son go with you to pick out a favourite design or theme, as well as one that seats him comfortably.

There are several behaviours to look out for when determining if a toddler boy is ready to be potty trained. Try answering these questions to find out if the time to try the potty is imminent for a boy:

  • Is he curious about using the bathroom?
  • Is he interested in pleasing you?
  • Is he displaying a desire for independence?
  • Does he have an older brother that he constantly emulates?
  • Does he like to pretend he is a grown-up?
  • Does he respond positively to praise and encouragement?

If the answer to one or more is yes, then a strong motivators for toilet training have been identified.

Potty Training Plan

Once a child is ready, parents need to establish a clear potty training plan. Have training pants, a potty seat, and pull ups handy. Set a timetable with goals. When they are met, reward those goals with stickers, positive praise, special outings, TV time, or anything that he enjoys. Try incorporating these important steps:

At home, let your child adjust the seat to his liking in the bathroom. He may want to place it beside or across from the adult toilet. Avoid letting him keep it in his room as a play item, because he may not take this training as seriously as he should. Don’t let him store toys on it, either, as they could become soiled or this will support the notion of potty chair as plaything.

  • Use a definitive tone of voice to announce when potty training will begin.
  • Set out the potty in an accessible location (doesn’t need to be the bathroom).
  • Note when the child usually has bowel movements and place him on the potty at these times.
  • Keep his clothes on at first.
  • Read a story to encourage him to stay on the potty.
  • Have him practice walking to the potty.
  • Decide how he will be rewarded for his efforts and be consistent.
  • Decide how accidents will be handled.

Potty training tips for boys

These are some handy potty training tips for boys:

1. Have your son choose a colour or theme of toilet paper that he wants, and keep a roll beside his potty chair. This will instil a sense of greater control and ownership over this new training task.

2. Take your toddler to the bathroom for toileting several times a day. You can ask or accompany him to the potty seat every couple of hours or when you see him tug at his diaper or attempt to pull it down. He will not use the potty chair each time he sits on it, but he will become more familiar and comfortable with its use to facilitate greater ease each day.

3. Don’t insist that he cleans the potty bowl after usage. You can let him assist if he wants to, but this task belongs to the parent to ensure the pot is kept clean and hygienic. Some children may even fear handling their own elimination products, so take care of this task as your child learns how to manage bodily functions.

4. Don’t stop buying diapers until you are sure the process has been mastered, which may take several weeks or months. Your child may have accidents during play, in the car while traveling, or at the store when there is a long wait in line or no available restroom. Night-time accidents are common as well. Be patient and good-natured during this transitional phase.

Potty Training Resistance

Be sure not to punish or reprimand your child for potty mistakes. At first, he is likely to use the potty infrequently. As he gets used to it; however, he may want to sit on the toilet with pants up or down to see how it feels. There are sure to be more misses than hits with the pot, and droplets on his clothing or the floor. Keep a washable rug under the potty chair for this purpose. Never discipline your child for an accident or a miss. Instead, praise him for small successes, like asking to use the potty seat or sitting on it for a few minutes, even if there are no results this time.

If there is a resistance to potty training, one or more of these tips may be helpful:

  1. Never use force or hold him down on the potty
  2. Change dirty diapers immediately
  3. Don’t pressure, judge, or punish for accidents
  4. Have him wear clothes and training pants that are easy to remove
  5. Keep diaper and pants off at various times during the day
  6. Use a sticker board, prize bucket, or ticket jar for rewards
  7. Read age-appropriate and entertaining potty training books together
  8. Start plan during warm season when clothes are lighter
  9. Have him observe/model other male members of the family
  10. Make older boys responsible for accidents

You can view potty training videos on Youtube. These often include catchy rhymes and sing-song lyrics that will make potty training seem natural and fun for your little one. There are also books you can get that teach your son more about the simplicity and desirability of mastering potty functions.

In conclusion

Since modern diapers are so much easier to handle and more comfortable to wear, potty training tends to be delayed a little longer. It isn’t uncommon for boys to reach the age of four or even five before they are fully potty trained. Keep in mind that all children develop at different rates and have patience. Remember that your child, like all others, will eventually make the successful transition from diapers to toilet.

Potty training is an important life skill that children must learn before going to school. Parents can do much to help or hinder their child’s success, so take a positive approach.

Our Thoughts on the CYBEX LEMO 3-in-1 Highchair

At first, I was skeptical about a chair that could convert from a highchair to one that anyone can use around your home. I was worried about how easy it would be to put together, then manoeuvrer from a highchair to a chair you can use at a desk or around your dinner table.

This is how our CYBEX LEMO Highchair was delivered to our home.

CYBEX LEMO Highchair boxes

All the parts of the CYBEX highchair were neatly tucked into the larger box, while the cushions were snuggly put into the smaller one. Below is what is included in these boxes for users to enjoy:

CYBEX LEMO Highchair Review

I wish I had this chair when my younger son was a newborn. The Bouncer Nest cushion would have been a feature I would have loved to have around my house. My hands could have been freer so I could get more tasks completed around the house while my baby would have been cuddled and supported. I could have also had my baby close by while working at my desk during his early months. Please note – The Bouncer Nest is an additional feature I did not received to review.

CYBEX LEMO Bouncing nest

Adjusting the height of this chair is designed well, too! All I have to do is loosen the safety lock, pull the release lever, raise or lower the seat or footrest to where it is needed, then twist the safety lock back into place.

It is great to have the CYBEX LEMO Highchair for my little guy at our table. It is slim, so it does not take up too much space around our dining room when he is not sitting in it, and he sits nice and snug into it when he uses it.

I was also looking for a chair for my work area. I love adjusting the seat so my kids and I can all sit at our desired heights in this spot. It takes no time to slip the cushions on this chair’s backrest and the seat. These additions make accomplishing work a more focused experience.

Things I Would Want to Change About the CYBEX LEMO Highchair

There are so many amazing features we discovered about the CYBEX LEMO Highchair, but there were also a few things I would like to have found different about it, too.

One aspect about this chair I wish was different is the seat for the highchair addition. The recommendation for this part of the chair is for a child ages 6 months to 3 years-old. At the time of this review, my son was 18 months-old. He was just able to fit into this portion of the seat and be fastened into the supports. I think if this part of the chair was bigger, it would have made sitting in it even easier for him to use.

Another feature about the highchair addition to the CYBEX LEMO Highchair I wish was different would be where the supports are on the chair. They sit in the middle of this attachment. I felt if these supports were mounted higher on the chair, it would be easier to use the straps.

CYBEX LEMO Highchair Review

Finally, I wish that the actual height of this chair was higher. When using this chair, I found that I would have liked to have been supported higher on my back. When I sit in the chair, the back support rests below the lower area of my back. If it was possible, I wish I could raise it so it could reach my shoulder blades for even more comfort.

A High Recommendation for the CYBEX LEMO Highchair

My family REALLY loves the CYBEX LEMO Highchair! I wish I would have known about this chair a year ago so my younger son could have enjoyed this chair when he was younger. This chair’s design is well thought out, it is simple to assemble, and can convert into its different modes in seconds so anyone can us it! The added cushions are a bonus for extra comfort and functionality for younger users. We will be using the CYBEX LEMO daily around our home.

I learned more about CYBEX by following their Instagram page.

One of the reasons for uncommon vaginal bleeding could be related to spotting during ovulation, and it can surely make you worried as you wonder if it’s normal or not.

Spotting During Ovulation: When to Be Concerned

In this article, we’ll discuss what ovulation is, the reasons for ovulation bleeding, when to be concerned, and more for your health and well-being.

What Is Ovulation?

Your ovaries contain eggs. When ovulating (or during ovulation), an egg is released from the ovaries and into a fallopian tube. This egg can become fertilized under the right conditions, usually within 24 hours.

Ovulation occurs in the middle of the menstrual cycle, and most women experience it once a month. For instance, if you have a 28-day cycle, ovulation occurs 14 days before the first day of your next period.

Most women can tell when they are ovulating with these common signs:

  • Increase in basal body temperature
  • Breast soreness
  • Heightened senses
  • Nausea and headaches
  • Cervical mucus
  • Mild pelvic or lower abdominal pain
  • Light spotting or brown discharge

What Is Ovulation Bleeding?

As mentioned above, one of the symptoms that you’re ovulating is light spotting or brown discharge. Some women may experience this, and some may not.

When the follicle, in which the egg is surrounded and protected, matures and bursts open to release an egg, this can result in a small amount of bleeding. The ovulation discharge can range from red to dark brown.

As blood gets older, the discharge will be dark brown in color. Whereas the discharge could also be light pink in color as the blood gets mixed with cervical fluid.

All this leads to changes in hormone levels during ovulation – estrogen and progesterone, which cause bleeding. Before ovulation, estrogen levels rise with the growth of follicles. Once ovulation is completed, estrogen levels rapidly decline, and progesterone levels keep rising to prepare the endometrium for implantation.

Generally, ovulation bleeding is normal as it’s one of the symptoms that you’re ovulating and occurs only once each cycle. Ovulation bleeding is usually light, with just a few drops of blood on your underwear.

If spotting is combined with other ovulation symptoms, such as breast soreness and mild pelvic pain, it usually indicates that it’s normal spotting related to ovulation.

Spotting Between Periods

Light bleeding or spotting outside your period, such as before, after, and during ovulation, can occur as well. Let’s take a look.

Spotting Before Ovulation

If you’re spotting before ovulation, it may signal that you have a reproductive problem. If it’s happening one to two weeks apart, there may be no ovulation at all, especially when linked with other health concerns that affect fertility, like PCOS or thyroid issues.

Spotting During Ovulation

Ovulation spotting occurs when you’re ovulating. You can tell you’re spotting during ovulation when you experience other ovulating symptoms as well, like cervical mucus and mild lower abdominal pain.

This is usually normal and nothing to worry about. Women who want to get pregnant may use this as a sign to conceive since this is the time they are fertile.

Spotting After Ovulation

If you’re spotting after ovulation, it could be implantation bleeding. When a fertilized egg attaches to the wall of a woman’s uterus, it can cause light bleeding from a few hours to 2 days. Generally, it happens when your period had to arrive.

It usually indicates that you’re pregnant. You might also have very light cramping accompanied by light bleeding or spotting. Using a pregnancy test during this time will confirm your pregnancy.

If you experience heavy bleeding, clotting, and pelvic pain, visit your healthcare provider immediately. Some other causes of bleeding during early pregnancy can also be due to infection, miscarriage, or ectopic pregnancy.

On the other hand, you may also experience non-pregnancy-related vaginal bleeding after ovulation due to menstruation, endometriosis, hormonal changes due to birth control or fertility pills, infections, or uterine fibroids.

What’s the Difference Between Ovulation Bleeding and a Period?

Spotting During Ovulation: When to Be Concerned

The differences between ovulation bleeding and a period are mentioned below.

  • The timing of bleeding – Ovulation bleeding usually occurs 13 to 20 days in your menstrual cycle. On the other hand, period may occur every 21 to 35 days in your cycle.
  • The amount of bleeding – Ovulation bleeding consists of only mild spotting. Whereas, period bleeding is heavier and may cover your entire panty liner.
  • The duration of bleeding – Your period may last up to 7 days. However, ovulation bleeding lasts between 1 and 2 days.
  • Symptoms – The symptoms accompanied by period are abdominal cramping, fatigue, lower back pain, nausea, and diarrhea or constipation. These symptoms are unusual with ovulation bleeding.

Does Spotting During Ovulation Mean Pregnancy?

Spotting during ovulation doesn’t indicate your pregnancy. However, spotting during ovulation, accompanied by other symptoms of ovulation, can be a great sign for women that they are in the fertility window.

Whether they want to get pregnant or not, they can take appropriate measures accordingly when spotting during ovulation.

Keep in mind that the timings of ovulation bleeding and implantation bleeding (which is an early sign of pregnancy) are quite different. So, bleeding during ovulation doesn’t mean that you are pregnant. It just means that you have entered the fertility window.

How Can I Prevent Ovulation Bleeding?

The majority of women don’t experience ovulation bleeding. Even if you’re one of those who do experience this, the symptoms may only be mild and shouldn’t concern you.

However, women who want to prevent ovulation bleeding may be prescribed hormonal contraceptives that control the hormones responsible for ovulation bleeding and stop ovulation. Of course, you must consult your doctor about this.

If you want to conceive, you shouldn’t prevent ovulation or spotting related to it, as it’s a natural part of ovulation. You can always discuss with your doctor how you can manage spotting during ovulation better once they have clarified that your spotting is nothing to worry about.

When to See Your Healthcare Provider

If you have irregular bleeding outside your period, it could be a sign of fibroids, STIs, endometriosis, and PCOS. Irregular bleeding with severe pelvic pain and heavy blood flow requires you to see your healthcare provider immediately.

If your menstrual bleeding patterns have altered all of a sudden, you should also contact your healthcare provider, so they can take the right step at the right time before your health is risked.

Creative Windows Integration Ideas: Learn 7 Remodel Strategies For Modern Homes

There are countless possibilities when it comes to house remodelling ideas. You might start with a straightforward home improvement project that focuses on visible, purely aesthetic modifications. Some initiatives, such as painting, staining, or adding storage, are typically simpler.

Creative Windows Integration Ideas

Alternatively, you might take on a more extensive restoration project, such as replacing your siding, roofing, countertops, tile, flooring, or carpet. Many homeowners like to take advantage of this chance to reap the rewards of replacement windows, which increase house value, aesthetic appeal, and energy efficiency all in one project. Throughout the process, it’s important to check on how to apply for windows rebates in Ontario.

With that said, let’s discuss 7 smart home remodelling ideas that will help you do excellent window integrations in your property.

7 Ways to Include Windows in Your House Renovation

Here are some inventive ways of incorporating windows into any home renovation project:

1. Cooking Window Ideas

Kitchen and bathroom remodelling are currently the most common home remodelling tasks homeowners undertake. According to research from the Canadian Real Estate Association, kitchen and bathroom renovations add property value and increase the resale price.

If you plan to renovate your kitchen, think about how you may include windows in the plan. Your area will appear more useful and attractive with natural light and cooling breezes.

Adding a window over the kitchen sink gives the kitchen space an outdoor feeling. When the window is over the kitchen sink, you will also watch the kids playing outside while doing the dishes or preparing a meal.

Awning windows can be used as backsplash tiles in your kitchen, another option to incorporate windows into the room. Increased ventilation and better usefulness will be made possible by this redesigned backsplash section, which will also significantly improve the aesthetics of your kitchen as a whole.

2. Remodelling Bathroom Windows

Try swapping out worn-out tiles for white ones to brighten up a dingy, outdated bathroom. You could also install a window to an existing wall to let in more natural light. Where privacy is an issue, mounting a window high on the wall is a fantastic solution.

Another approach to letting light into the space while preserving privacy in the bathroom is to choose windows with opaque or frosted glass. Adding a window to the shower or above a bathtub is another remodelling suggestion. This produces a cheery, spa-like ambiance filled with tranquil natural light. Before installing a new window, think about how it will appear from inside and outside your house.

Your home’s overall design should be complemented by the style of windows, colour, hardware, and grilles you select, which should add interest rather than detract from it.

3. Home Remodelling Exterior Designs

Windows and window trim significantly influence curb appeal and exterior home design. The style and attractiveness of your home’s exterior can be significantly altered by changing the colours or sizes of your windows. Your neighbours will be perplexed as to whether it’s even the same house after seeing the incredible before-and-after change.

Consider including a sunroom in your home’s floor design if you’re already replacing the siding or roofing on the exterior of your house. Huge floor-to-ceiling windows enhance your house’s interior and exterior by letting in natural light and establishing a clear link with outdoor dining areas. A room with exterior walls can also be renovated and made into a sunroom by including several windows.

4. Window Repositioning

If you have side-by-side windows, you might only have two windows in your room. A makeover allows you to experiment with your window placement regardless of how things are set up.

A wall of windows or a picture window is a fantastic choice for homeowners wishing to allow in plenty of light or build a connection with their natural surroundings. Some people choose to rearrange windows by stacking them in series or making one large opening out of what were formerly multiple smaller ones.

5. Windows With Transoms and Sidelights

Add a transom window above it or a sidelight to one or both windows or doors to accentuate their appearance. In addition to admitting more natural light into a space, transoms, and sidelights allow homeowners to create a distinctive style.

A fixed elliptical transom with ornate glass may have a more formal appearance for some homeowners than an operable transom, which can open like a little awning window above their conventional window. Any room in the house gains aesthetic interest and attractiveness by adding transom or sidelight windows, regardless of their style.

6. Switching Windows for Doors

The functionality of your present windows doesn’t fully serve you when you explore how you want your ideal environment to function. As the demand for indoor-outdoor living areas rises, many homeowners want simpler outdoor access from their renovated interiors. For instance, a patio door would be a better option for you than the two single-hung windows that were there before.

7. Colour Schemes and Window Finishes

In addition to the more traditional white and black, windows come in various colours. Would the outside of your windows be dark green to go with the scenery? Maybe you want to encase your wood windows with black aluminium to give the exterior of your house a modern look.

Some windows are available in various interior and exterior colours to help you match your replacement windows to your style. Consider how changing the colour or finish of your windows could alter the room’s appearance while brainstorming renovation ideas for your home.

Final Words

There are various methods to include windows in your project designs, whether you’re remodelling a single room or your entire home. Examine if it’s time to replace your windows and you need more clarification. Don’t hesitate to contact for professional advice and window installation services.

Overheated skin can aggravate the appearance of acne; if your baby gets too warm, his or her acne may appear more pronounced for several hours afterward. Contact with rough fibres, like snuggling up to mom’s sweater, can have a similar effect, as can chemicals in baby products like shampoo and lotion.

Newborn acne remedies

There are a few things that can be done to help newborn acne. Most of the time home remedies can take care of the problem. First, try to keep tabs on how warm your baby gets during the day. He or she may need a couple of costume changes to keep his or her body temperature regulated. Next, establish a routine of cleansing the baby’s face and neck with a clean cloth and warm water. If infant soap seems to help, feel free to use it, but if it is the culprit of the baby’s irritated skin, it’s best to skip it. (Note: don’t forget to wash behind the ears and in the folds of the baby’s neck; milk or formula can sneak in those spots and be missed during bath times!)

If you suspect the soap or lotion used during bath time is the cause of some irritation, either replace it with something with fewer ingredients, or get in the habit of rinsing baby’s skin with fresh, warm water at the end of a bath. Keep a pitcher of warm water handy and, as your baby’s bath drains, use a clean washcloth to rinse their body (quickly, so they don’t get chilly!) As for moisturizer, it is not always necessary, but extra virgin coconut oil makes a great alternative.

Can breastmilk help baby acne?

Finally, the secret weapon for almost every ailment a baby could have is mother’s milk. Breastmilk contains natural antiseptic qualities, among many other qualities, and applying a few drops of breastmilk on a cotton ball to the irritated spots on baby’s face can work wonders and help baby acne.

Never try to use the same techniques that an adult would use to fight acne. Your baby’s skin is infinitely more sensitive and delicate, so chemicals could burn, and picking, squeezing, or extracting could lead to infection, bruising, or other results that are far worse than the acne would be. Understanding the differences between baby acne vs eczema is crucial, as these two conditions can appear similar but require different treatments. Stick to remedies that are simple, gentle, and natural, and above all, if you have any doubts or questions, call your baby’s Pediatrician for professional advice.

Why is the Leprechaun Associated with St. Patrick’s Day

Leprechauns are one of the main symbols of the Irish holiday. They are a folklore myth, and the name comes from the word “lobaircin” which means small-bodied fellow. Legends have it that leprechauns come from the Celtic belief in fairies. These tiny men and women use their magical powers for good and evil.

So why is the Leprechaun associated with St. Patrick’s Day? Well, both St. Patrick and leprechauns are from Ireland. These tiny little men are known for trickery when protecting their treasures of gold. This is why we always see them at the end of the rainbow with a pot of gold coins. Check out this Pot of Gold craft to add to the festivities. The Worst Kitchen Cleaning Products On The Market Today

9

Cleaning the kitchen is one of the most challenging tasks regarding home maintenance; hence, many homeowners buy a load of cleaning products to ensure they have a spotless space. Although these cleaning products work well, they can be dangerous when misused.

Worst Kitchen Cleaning Products

For instance, in case of spillage, some of these household chemicals might cause injury to individuals or damage to property. Kitchen cleaners’ toxicity varies in severity ranging from respiratory issues, watery eyes, chemical burns, or even chronic sickness. Some toxins that you should watch out for include carcinogens, endocrine disruptors, and neurotoxins.

Fortunately, these cleaners have labels that often specify their toxic contents and have corresponding instructions on poison control in case of exposure to the skin or ingestion.

Since cleaning products cannot be entirely avoided, here are some of the worst options that you can steer away from so you can start finding better alternatives.

  1. Glass Cleaners

It’s normal for windows to lose their shine over time. Dirty windows and house blinds can be distracting, making store-bought glass cleaners handy. However, this doesn’t cover blinds made with upholstery, such as roman blinds. Although alcohol-based glass cleaners help eliminate grime, they contain harmful chemicals such as ammonia.

Glass cleaners with ammonia attract dust and emit fumes, which can be dangerous when inhaled. So, consider using a homemade glass cleaner when cleaning blinds and shades. To create this solution, mix one part of vinegar with warm water. This is effective for getting rid of splashes of water and stubborn streaks.

  1. Drain And Oven Cleaners

Drain and oven cleaners can dissolve tough buildups that tend to obstruct pipes. For these cleaners to dissolve buildup, they contain alkaline compounds that are powerful enough to cause serious damage, which include sodium hypochlorite, hydrochloric acid, trichlorobenzene, sulfuric acid, lye, and sodium nitrate. These chemicals can be dangerous when they come into contact with skin and eyes; they might lead to severe burns.

They can create holes in pipes, especially in older plumbing, when used frequently. Therefore, avoid using liquid drain cleaners except when you have to. When you do, consider using these cleaners with great caution. A solution made of milder ingredients, like vinegar, water, and baking soda, can be a sustainable yet effective alternative.

  1. Bleach And Ammonia

Both bleach and ammonia have been used in the kitchen for years to get rid of surface stains. Although effective, they emit chlorine gases that are corrosive to the body and kitchen surfaces when used together.

These cleaning products can emit dangerous fumes that irritate the eyes and lungs. So, avoid using both of these cleaners at the same time. Better nontoxic options are vinegar, detergent, hydrogen peroxide, and baking soda.

  1. Air Fresheners

Everyone loves a kitchen that smells great and inviting. For this reason, most people choose an air freshener that instantly removes the foul smell. However, they contain dangerous chemicals such as formaldehyde, benzene, acetaldehyde, xylenes, ethylbenzene, and toluene that can be volatile.

air freshner

The synthetic fragrance in most air fresheners can trigger allergies and asthma in healthy people. So, to avoid these downsides, consider opting for organic essential oils to keep your kitchen healthy and fresh.

  1. Liquid Soaps

Most dish detergents have fragrances and solvents that can be harmful to drains if they are directly applied. For liquid soaps to function effectively, they are filled with chemicals, such as parabens, synthetic fragrances, phthalates, synthetic colors, formaldehyde, and triclosan sodium, amongst many others.

When liquid soap is used in sinks, they leave deposits that catch hair, food scraps, and lint, which might interfere with water flow. To avoid this, consider a better alternative, like nontoxic dishwasher tabs.

  1. Magic Erasers

Magic erasers are considered housekeeping miracles. They remove dirt, scuffs, and permanent markers from walls or furniture with little effort. Even though magic erasers are incredibly effective, they contain toxic chemicals that can harm your furniture or body. They contain formaldehyde which might be destructive to your paint or the finish on your wood.

Fortunately, you can make a less toxic alternative at home. To do this, use a teaspoon of borax, and a tablespoon of baking soda, then use it to scrub the surface you want to clean.

  1. All-Purpose Cleaning Sprays

Although versatile, all-purpose cleaning sprays can be dangerous to the body as opposed to kitchen surfaces. These sprays contain solvents that might trigger asthma and allergies. The formaldehyde, artificial fragrances, and other harsh compounds in all-purpose cleaning sprays can also cause skin irritation.

Worst Kitchen Cleaning Products On The Market Today

It’s safer to make your all-purpose cleaning spray with greener ingredients to manage these effects. To create a safer homemade option, mix one-part white vinegar, one-part water, lemon rind, and rosemary sprigs.

Bottom Line

Kitchen cleaning products can help in keeping space in excellent shape. However, as established above, some of these products can be harmful if not used right. Therefore, consider finding natural and greener options when buying your cleaning products.

How to Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day

As a way to celebrate and honour their heritage and homeland, Irish immigrants celebrated the Feast of St. Patrick, patron saint of Ireland on March 17th. The day was celebrated with parades, dancing, and food. In Ireland, it is a holiday when they close stores and shops.

Today, most people celebrate St. Patrick’s day at a bar. They drink green beer and get rowdy. These days it’s just a big party for everyone and it has lost the real meaning. Depending on your views of the holiday will decide how you celebrate St. Patrick’s day.

There is no better way to celebrate St Patrick’s day than with food. Follow the recipe below for this Irish charcuterie board or create your own with the food that you like. Any charcuterie board can be customized to your liking and a perfect snack board for St. Patrick’s Day. If you need more food ideas then you will like these 8 Authentic Irish Foods.

What is the History and Origin of Charcuterie Board

Charcuterie comes from the French words for flesh (chair) and cooked (cuit). The French created the board using mainly cured pork meats and organs. While you may think that charcuterie boards are a fairly new concept, they have actually been around for many many years. The belief is that no animal part should be wasted so they are salted and smoked to preserve them.

Many of us have only recently heard about charcuterie boards. Most of us have probably used the terms cheese platter or meat trays. Charcuterie is just a fancy way of saying that.

Can You Make a Charcuterie Board the Night Before

Having any sort of celebration means extra work for the host on the event day. Preparing things ahead of time will make it go more smoothly. So, yes, you can prepare a charcuterie board the night before with some exceptions.

You can add almost everything to your board ahead of time. If you plan on adding pastries or crackers, leave them until you are almost ready to serve. Set up the items where you want them on the board, cover them in plastic wrap and chill until ready to serve.

Suddenly, a bee buzzes its way in their direction, crossing the line the two monsters are arguing about. Realizing how silly their squabble over the line had become, the monsters remove the line that brought about this strife and join their other monster friends on the beach at play.

The Line in the Sand Book Review

For a book without words, The Line in the Sand is a fun read. Lam’s bright and colourful monsters popped off the page against the sandy setting of the story. Lam’s characters were also extremely expressive so young readers can understand the range of emotions being expressed on the monsters’ faces throughout the story.

The idea of a line causing such a disturbance is a great way for kids to understand what can happen when misunderstandings occur. It is an interesting metaphor representing so many things that can cause conflict between friends.

The most important part was seeing the bee cross the line, allowing both monsters to see that their fight was not necessary. Both monsters erasing the line and being friends again is also significant because it shows the importance of forgiveness.

A high recommendation for Owlkids Books’ The Line in the Sand

Since this title from Owlkids Books does not have any words, it allowed for my son to practice his interpretation skills as we read this book together. I asked him what he thought was happening on each page. He was able to describe what was happening on most of the pages with ease. The situations he did not understand we discussed. He then had other questions about this story and how it related to the world around us.

The Line in the Sand Book

My son also LOVED the monster characters. The main monsters are completely different, yet fun to look at throughout this story. He was not able to decide which one he liked more. The faces these characters expressed when sharing different emotions were easy for him to recognize. Overall, The Line in the Sand is a fun read that can help kids learn about conflicts can begin and how easy it can be to diffuse them. Finally, I feel that this title is a great bedtime story book to share with your little ones.

RECIPE TIP: SOAK YOUR POTATOES BEFORE FRYING

One of the instructions for this recipe asks you to soak the potato slices before frying them. Why is it important to perform this task? After making this dish many times, I have found that potatoes that had been soaked before being fried ended up being crispier then if this step was skipped. The reason behind this is that the starch found in potatoes prevents a good crisp from forming.

9 Ways To Save Money On Food

6

In the crunch economy it’s important to be frugal – but there is frugal and there is miserable. This article shows ways to save money on food, how to spend less money at the grocery store, and to keep your food good.

Avoid Impulse Buying

Many things are known to increase the impulse shopping, and you probably know them. The secret is to not let them get to you if you want to save money on food.

1.Don’t shop when you are hungry.

2. Shop on-line for staples and non-food items.

3. Use special offers, but use them wisely. Many special offers are designed to make you impulse buy. There is a reason why buy one get one 1/2 price or buy three for a cheaper price are more common than simple price cuts. Only buy something on offer if you would buy it otherwise, or if it replaces something you intended to buy and offers better value. Don’t be tempted by offers on non-essential, fun items. You might get double the amount of chocolate, but it will likely mean that it will be eaten at double the rate.

Bulk Buying Is Not Always Better Value

4. Buying in bulk is not always better value. It can work, but only for essential staples and for very disciplined people. Sometimes it’s better to buy a smaller packet, with a lower ticket price, even if price per pound is higher. A smaller packet will do fine and if you buy a bigger one you are likely to use more.

5. Consider using less of the key, more expensive ingredient and bump up the content with cheaper padding. Use half a pound of mince and add vegetables to your pasta sauce. Use three, not two chicken breasts and serve an extra vegetable side dish. Dilute fruit juice. Mix proper Greek yogurt or fresh creme with the supermarket value brand. Make conscious effort to cook just what’s needed, to avoid throwing away half-portion leftovers.

Go Down A Brand

If you buy premium brands, consider mass-market. If you buy mass-market brands, consider discount and value brands. Some of those are dreadful, that is true, but some are virtually indistinguishable from the more expensive products.

6. Buy and try – the single costs are low, so you won’t waste much even if you hate the product, but long-term savings are potentially large. It works particularly well for tinned goods (tomatoes, beans, tinned fruit), and simple packaged staples (porridge oats, cornflakes, salt – why ever buy branded salt??). No Name tinned tomatoes cost less than a premium brand ones, and they are just as good. Is it worth paying such a premium for a can of dices tomatoes?

7. For many food products, frozen vegetables and fruits are substantially cheaper than fresh and not significantly worse. This applies particularly to out of season vegetables and fruits, but also to some meat and fish: the quality of these frozen foods is good and acceptable for certain everyday or heavily seasoned dishes. On the other hand, in season always try to buy fresh and local food, and you can also freeze them to eat later in the fall.

Ready Made Food Made Sensible

Ready meals are expensive when of decent quality, so cooking from scratch is the best option. However, not all processed food is more expensive.

8. Unless you have access to cheap source of good flour, making your own bread may lead to great quality results, but will almost certainly be more expensive than buying commercial products. The same is true with jams and condiments (unless you grow your own). Supermarket pizza and fresh pasta can occasionally replace take out food for half the price.

9. Cook in batches and freeze half of what you made. This is very economical as well as time saving and will work for soups, casseroles, pasta sauces, and stews.
