Going back to school is an exciting time for kids but it’s also an uncertain time. A new school year means new teachers, new friends and new responsibilities. It’s natural for your child to be a little worried. However, some kids worry so much that it affects their appetite, sleep and mood. They may even cry, fuss and refuse to go.
To help avoid these problems, ease back-to-school worries with these tips:
· Pay attention to your child’s behaviour. If he exhibits any of the symptoms above, talk to him about it. Encourage him to tell you what he’s feeling so you can openly discuss the things he’s worrying about.
· Never dismiss your child’s feelings as unimportant. Simply saying “it will be fine, don’t worry” doesn’t help him at all. What may seem like a small thing to you may be life-changing for him. Be compassionate and understanding when talking to your child.
· Look for ways to help your child learn to cope with his worries and concerns. There may be something he can do to help ease his fears such as counting to ten or taking three deep breaths.
A boy and a girl and Back to school spelled with Scrabble blocks
· Maintain a regular routine. This includes everything from eating healthysnacks and meals to going to bed at a certain time. Following a schedule helps maintain a sense of calm and dependability during an uncertain time in his life.
· Be positive and support your child. Let him know that you believe in him. You know he can adapt and have a wonderful time in school if he just gives it a chance. The more positive and confident you are the more calm your child will be.
Use these tips to help ease your child’s back to school worries and get the year started off on the right foot.

3 Ways Parents Can Prevent Back-to-School Meltdowns
Back-to-school meltdowns are a real problem for many parents every year. Some kids have a hard time being away from home, even for a few hours during the day. They are frightened, nervous and worried about going to school. These kids often express their fears by screaming, crying and refusing to go to school almost every day. It can be an exhausting experience for everyone, including parents. Fortunately, there is hope.
Here are three ways for parents to prevent back-to-school meltdowns:
1. Start preparing the kids for school early. Talk to your child about going back to school two or three weeks before it begins. This will give you time to see his/her reaction so you can start addressing his/her fears early. Look for ways to help your child cope with his/her anxiety and it will help ease his/her fears before school even starts. Usually, the school will send information about the upcoming year a few weeks before school starts that includes a calendar. Post it on the refrigerator and start a countdown and talk about the fun activities and courses that your child likes. Seeing friends from the previous school year by arranging a playdate a week or two before school starts will also help with back to school anxieties.
2. Get back on your regular school schedule. Reinforce an earlier bedtime to ensure your child gets plenty of sleep. In addition to getting her in bed on time, be sure to wake her up in the morning. Start the day with a good nutritious breakfast to help get her used to the new schedule before school starts.
3. Stay calm and relaxed yourself. If you get yourself worked up over what might happen, it’ll make her even more anxious. Put on a happy face and be positive when talking about going back to school.

Start preparing for the new school year early and it’ll help make things go a lot smoother during those first few days. Hopefully, it will be enough to help prevent those back-to-school meltdowns.

During the summer, many kids get in the habit of staying up late at night. While this is fine during the summer break, bedtime must come earlier during the school year. Kids need to go to bed early enough to get a good night’s sleep, every night. It gives them more energy, they’re more alert and it helps them focus better throughout the day. These are some tips on bedtime routine and how to prep kids for a back to school.
Tips for Bedtime Routine
Before bedtime routine: Determine what time your kids will need to get up in the mornings to have plenty of time to get ready for school. Getting up at the last minute and rushing out the door can cause unnecessary anxiety.
How to shorten bedtime routine: Once you know what time the kids need to be in bed, start getting them in bed 15 minutes earlier each night for a few days until they adjust to the new time. Continue the process until you reach the desired bedtime.
How to fix bedtime routine: Be consistent with your bedtime rules. If you let the kids stay up late on some nights, it makes it harder for them to adjust to the new school schedule.
Back to School routine: Stick to your back to school bedtime routine, even on weekends and non-school days. This is important to keeping their internal clock in order.
Child sleeping
When you plan in advance and start early, preparing your kids for their new bedtime routine will be a lot easier. By the time school begins, they’ll already be adjusted to the new schedule.

3 Things to Do Before Your Child’s First Day of School
The first day of school is a scary and uncertain time for many kids. Their life is changing so much as they meet new people and do new things. It’s easy to understand why your child may hesitate and be skeptical about going to school but you can help make this experience a pleasant one. No matter how old your child gets, he will need your support. The first day of school is an important one and there are things you can do to help make this day go more smoothly for your child.
Here are three things to do before your child’s first day of school to help her prepare for this new, exciting adventure:
1. Talk to your child about her feelings. Going to school is exciting and scary at the same time. Kids go through various emotions, some of which they don’t really understand. Talking to your child about her fears will help you understand what she is feeling, so you can help her overcome these fears.
2. Take a tour of the school. Visiting the classroom, meeting the teacher and touring the school can go a long ways in preparing your child for the new school year. It’ll help her get familiar with her new surroundings so she feels more comfortable about being away from home.
3. On the first day of school say your goodbyes but don’t linger. Reassure your child that you’re not far away. Let her know that you’ll be there if she needs you and that you’ll see her in a few hours. Be happy and positive when you hug your child goodbye, tell her to have a great day and then leave without hesitating. This shows her that you’re confident she is safe and will have a great day.
Back to School ~ apple with notebook, a pen and pencil
Always listen to your child and reassure her that you’ll be there to help if problems arise. Knowing you support her and that you’re only a short drive away will help to ease those first day jitters.
Before I pack for our vacation, I always write a trip packing checklist of what to bring on a family road trip. This way you focus on what you need to bring, especially the last minute items on the day of the departure like your child’s favourite plush toy.
You must not forget the medicine gym bag that is packed with a first aid supply kit, over the counter medication for colds, allergies and pain, sunscreen and sunburn lotions. Can you tell that I am very organized (yes, I over do it)! I thought I would share my family road trip packing tips to help you prepare for your upcoming family vacation adventures.
Road Trip Packing Checklist
I always seem to bring everything except the kitchen sink when I go on a family trip, so it’s a good thing we have a Grand Caravan. I am probably not the only mom that does this, right? I bring a cooler for the beverages, another one for the snacks and one more for the breakfasts. I’m on vacation so I hate getting up early to have to go for breakfast before 9 am and the kids don’t mind because they eat in bed while watching TV. My husband and I really enjoy sleeping in while being on vacation. Now that’s a great trip!
VEHICLE
Make sure the vehicle is full of gas, it’s cleaned (who want to sit in a smelly car for 6 hours) and you have plenty of windshield washer fluid.
SNACKS
I avoid anything sticky, gooey or that may melt in the car (like chocolate). As a matter of fact, I don’t pack the sugar-loaded treats all together since they only trigger unwanted backseat bouncing. Fruits and veggies are a terrific choice and can be stored in individual containers or zipper bags so you each have your own. I would avoid bananas since they bruise easily. Peanut butter on crackers or a bagel, cereal and mixed nuts are my family’s favourites.
CLEAN UP
Bring small plastic grocery bags that you can attach to a door handle or I have a small plastic container on the floor of the van to dispose of snacks. A box of tissue, a roll of paper towels, sanitizer wipes and a bottle of hand sanitizer should be kept within arm’s reach. From spills, sticky hands to car sickness, you never know when they might come in handy.
Items to bring on a trip
MOTHER NATURE
Let’s face it, when a boy says, “I have to go to the bathroom – now!” pulling off onto the side of the road isn’t that big of deal. But when a girl says it, and you can’t exit the highway until another 50 KM now that’s a different story. I recommend bringing, for the little ones in training pants, a little training potty, a tub of disinfecting wipes, toilet paper and a box of zipped bags.
ENTERTAINMENT
The famous words “Are we there yet?” Kids need to be entertained on the road. We bring along interactive games, flash cards, their favourite CD’s/DVD’s and new books or toys to pique their interest. We also play what I call travelling games like count how many black cars, cows or trucks you see on the road or what do you see that’s green?
Packing Checklist
Some other things to check off your list might include a cell phone, a GPS and road maps. Give the tourism office of your destination a call or email and ask to mail you the events & activities brochure, hotel accommodations guide, map and coupons. Afterwards, as a family, you can decide what we would like to see. I also bring a list of addresses, phone numbers and maps of hotels & tourist attractions that we will be visiting with us.
Passports (if travelling outside Canada)
Updated maps or navigation system (When traveling, it’s worth it to upgrade to the latest software.)
Small cooler for upfront and larger cooler in the back filled with refill items
First-aid kit (with motion sickness relievers)
Road-side emergency kit (including water bottles)
Tricks and treats bag (new games, toys, snacks and any other magical distractions)
Wet wipes, paper towels or napkins and a bottle of hand sanitizer
Trash bags
Flashlight
Sunscreen & sunburn lotions
Cell phone and DVD player charger
Camera, video camera and batteries
Pillows and Blankets
Toilet paper
Training potty (if you’re kids are in that stage)
Laundry bag for dirty clothes
Laundry detergent & stain remover
Rolls of quarters (laundry, video games)
Don’t be like me, remember, even if you forget the sunscreen or anything else, you can always buy the item on your road trip. The most important thing is to have fun and enjoy this special time as a family.
In celebration of the World Honey Bee Day, previously known as Honey Bee Awareness Day, being held the third Saturday in August, I thought a blog post about popular varieties of honey would be ideal!

Tricks to Get Your Child to Sleep Faster and Better
Bedtime, that precious part of the day that parents live for. While we enjoy our little people and their busy lives we also need a few moments of peace before we got to bed at night too. So what can you do when your child fights sleep and makes bedtime into a dreaded event? Try some of these tricks to help get the kiddo to sleep faster and make sure he sleeps through the night.
Wake Them Up!
Letting kids sleep in or take long naps is a sure way to make bedtime a challenge. Have a consistent wake-up time and bedtime schedule. It will become routine for your child to know that they have to get up and go to bed at a certain time.
Nighttime Routine
Try having your kids turn off all electronics 2 hours before bedtime, shower or bath and then read until bedtime helps kids develop a routine that helps them prepare for sleeping.
Children Books for Bedtime ~ Photo taken by Kamerine Gardam
Focus on Relaxation
You may find that stating that it is time to go to bed or time to sleep brings on a tantrum of epic proportions. Once you’ve established a night time routine your child will know that reading or simply relaxing in bed is the next step in their routine, rather than insisting that they go to sleep try offering them the option of simply reading or practicing counting sheep until they fall asleep on their own. The only rule is they are in bed, and they will stay there with the lights dimmed and no electronics.
Avoid the arguing and fighting, come up with relaxing activities and all w the child to wind down before declaring it is time to sleep. This will lead to less stress around bedtime and everyone will sleep better!

Best Hockey Goalie Equipment In 2017
Every position in hockey has its role to play, but when your son or daughter picks up the mantle of the goal tender, they’ve chosen a unique role in the game. They also require a lot of unique equipment that leaves them flexible but fully protected. You want to make sure they have the best equipment available when it comes to their skates, gloves, goal pads, and more. So what should you be buying when you’re gearing up your future Patrick Roy for the big game?
The Skates – When it comes to skates for goalies, Bauer Supreme 1S goal skates take the trophy for any goalie serious about their game. Bauer has made a number of key improvements to their goalie skate, the biggest of which is replacing cowling with an edge holder. Reviews are mentioning that cowling is an outdated feature, thanks to support from a toe cap. The edge sits higher up than Bauer’s last version of the skate, giving it a 10% better attack angle.
The Gloves – The gloves are often an overlooked part of goalie gear, with leg pads typically getting the most attention when new products are launched. But the gloves are just as important as any equipment in goaltending, which is why CCM designed the Extreme Flex 3 gloves with Carey Price. Price, the best goalie playing in the NHL right now, included a double-T pocket and a higher cuff with better coverage. Price even said at one point that the double-T pocket lets him see when he has the puck, so he knows, 100 percent, that he has it. Nothing is more embarrassing for a goalie than losing track of the puck.
The Goal Pads – Arguably the most important piece of goalie gear, there are too many different types of leg pads on the market, and too many differing opinions, to crown any single pad. However, Vaughn Hockey’s Velocity 7 XR legs are butterfly-style, light-weight, and padded with a sheet of carbon fibre that keeps them stiff. They’re great pads for young players who take the game seriously.
Ottawa Senators and Montreal Canadians players on the ice
As any Canadian parent can tell you, the only downside to hockey is that it can be an expensive sport to play. The league fees alone can cost thousands of dollars especially if your child plays competitive hockey, plus tournament fees and the high cost of equipment. While the issue of high league fees and other expenses are going to require bigger changes to the game, you can save money now by buying used goalie equipment for your kids. With so many people using online classifieds, shopping online can be a quick and convenient way to find savings on goalie equipment. Check local classifieds like Kijiji and search by brand, type, or price, and connect with other local hockey parents. From old sets of gear that are great for players just getting into the game to last year’s top-of-the-line equipment, you can find it online.
Montreal Canadians players on the ice
One of the great things about searching online with a site like Kijiji is you can even find hockey equipment that’s never been used. Whether it’s because it didn’t fit, because an injury took the player for the season, or because of a change of position, equipment that’s never been used is always a great deal. Going online is a great way to start saving on hockey equipment.
With each new school year comes new challenges. You never really know what to expect from your kids until the time comes. Starting the year off right will help make things run more smoothly for everyone and there are a few things you can do to make it happen.
Here are four tips to help you start a new school year off right:
1. You can avoid many common back to school problems a lot of parents face when you plan for the new school year. Don’t wait until the night before school starts to try to get everything in order. You’ll need to establish a good bedtime schedule and morning ritual in advance to keep things running smoothly.
2. Meet and stay in contact with your child’s teachers. Go to Open House to meet everyone and to introduce yourself. If you have the time, volunteer to help out at the school once in awhile. Get to know the staff and teachers and stay in touch with your child’s teacher through emails and notes.
3. Have a good, quiet place for the kids to do their homework. Kids need to be away from the TV and other distractions to help them focus on their work. When kids should do homework will vary based on when they’re the most productive at home. Some kids work better before dinner, some after dinner and others do best right before bedtime.
4. Make a point to talk to your kids about their day, every day. This way, you can discover and resolve problems quickly. Don’t just ask questions. Listen carefully to the things your kids talk about and engage in the conversation.
These tips can help you prepare for the new school year so you can get things started off on the right foot and keep them running smoothly all year long.

Sometimes, it is fun to live and move around like a local when on vacation. Using public transit is an economical way to visit sites around a city. Our day began just like this when we were treated to a ride on Gatineau’s public transit the STO . The L’Escapade Multi 3-Day Pass, riders will have access to unlimited trips for three consecutive days for only $20. Only in town for a day? STO also offers a Multi 1-Day pass. Both passes are available at select locations in Gatineau and can help get you around to experience the city in a fun way.

After having a bit of fun zipping around Gatineau, we had arrived at our first big stop for our trip: The Museum of Canadian History to get a look at the new Canadian History Hall opened to the public for Canada Day. Canada Hall aims to tell Canada’s history Through the experiences of real people and from various perspectives. Occupying over 4 000 square metres of exhibition space, this exhibit is the largest one devoted to Canadian history ever created. It features three sections and 1500 unique artifacts, some being national historic treasures.

There are so many interesting artifacts and interactive installations in this exhibit to see and learn from. I got lost in the amount of history the museum has displayed for visitors to discover. I could have stayed in all three sections all day if we did not have so much more to see and do.

Once we left the museum, we were brought across the street to stand by a long red line on the sidewalk. This line is important as it is downtown Gatineau’s Culture Trail. Not sure what to do while in Gatineau? The Culture Trail is a three kilometer line that allows visitors to explore sites that hold cultural significance to the city. This path also directs visitors to many sites involved in Canada 150 celebrations as well as several points of interest. Markers are posted along the Culture Trail for travelers to find different points of interest. An information cart will be present randomly along this trail to provide people with information, give out maps of the city, and they may have a surprise in store those who approach it.

From all of the delicious selections on the lunch menu, I noshed on Soif’s Frittata and Greens and sipped on a glass of Julep 2015. It was such a treat to get to relax and chat while enjoying a meal in this beautiful restaurant in the Gatineau.

After we filled our bellies with some of Gatineau’s finest food, the group reconnected at the Brasseurs De Temps , the first microbrewery in the Outaouais region. It brews seventeen different types of beer and can be paired with all of served in their restaurant.

We were taken on a tour of the museum which is a part of the brewery. We were introduced to some of the tools of the trade throughout the years. Stories of famous past visitors to the region because of prohibition were also shared.

After the tour, we were invited to taste three of the beers brewed on-site. Each one had its own distinctive flavour. Et La Lumière Fut is a pale ale with a slight honey flavour mixed with hops. Porter Fumé Café (Smoked Coffee Porter) is dark beer brewed in collaboration with La Brûlerie roasting house in Gatineau with a bold, smoky, coffee taste. Dumduminator is a honeyed-coloured beer with a caramel and a touch of banana hit the palate. We enjoyed our drinks while taking in the hidden wonders of the serene scene behind this brewery.

The group was then educated on Les Chemins d’Eau. It is a tourist route that runs parallel to the Ottawa River form the Petite-Nation and the city of Gatineau to the Pontiac. This route boasts of the natural and cultural heritage of the Outaouais.

The last site on the tour was to MosaΪcanada 150 – Gatineau 2017, a celebration of horticulture and art situated in Jacques Cartier Park. It is one of the sites hosting Canada 150 celebrations in the Outaouais region.

This site is home to thirty-three mosaiculture displays which are inspired by the history of Canada and the First Nations people. Earlier this year, Ottawa Mommy Club was invited by Outaouais Tourism to get a behind-the-scenes tour of the facilities where these wondrous structures were created for this year’s event. Remembering what some of these displays looked like a few months ago made visiting the site and seeing them complete even more impressive. The colourful vegetation covering each structure helped to bring each one alive.

One of the most impressive displays on the site is entitled “Mother Earth.” It depicts the legend of Aataentsic, the creation of the Wendat (Huron) people. Visitors marvel at her sheer size, the abundance of floral life and the waterfall flowing from one of her hands. It is a marvel that can only be appreciated in person.

The beginning of a new school year means it’s time to go shopping for new clothes and supplies. It can get very expensive, especially if you have more than one child in school. However, you can find ways to save money on the items you buy. For example, you can start by taking inventory of the things you already have at home. Then make a list of the things you need to buy so you don’t waste money on the items you don’t need.
Here are a few ways to save more on back to school shopping:
· Take advantage of coupons and use apps to help you find the best deals on the items you need.
· Follow your favourite stores on social media to keep up with sales and to receive special deals only offered to their followers.
· Shop thrift stores and consignment stores to search for unique outfits, backpacks and lunch bags.
· Shop end-of-season sales. This is a great time to buy new outfits for school because the stores need to move out their old inventory to bring in the new.
· Shop when stores advertise their back to school sales. You can find a lot of great deals on school supplies such as notebooks, pencils, paper and more.
· Get your children involved too in back-to-school shopping! Have them write the items they would like instead or use a note pad app on your smartphone or tablet, so you can refer to the school supply list when you are shopping for sales. Stick to the list! Lots of great sales in the stores, but don’t get tempted to purchase items you don’t need.

Rainy days. Travelling. Sick days. These are days that are hard on both kids and parents because you always want your child to have fun and entertained when they are not allowed to move around too much. Myfunvelope understands these situations and asked us if their roster of activities will fill the boredom gaps for my kids.
Myfunvelope is a subscription service that delivers themed crafts and activities to your door for your children to learn from and enjoy. Each envelope includes four unique craft projects as well as a STEM activity to test little one’s minds and keeps them busy.
When my kids got the green light, they were really excited to open their funenvelope. They quite literally tried ripping the envelope open to see what adventure waited for them inside.

myfunvelope Review
Once we opened our envelope, we discovered we received the Safari-themed envelope. My kids really enjoy animals, so this was a great theme to try.
A mix of crafts supplies in the myfunvelope Safari set.
My daughter loves jewellery so she wanted to dive in to put together the animal face bracelet. She had fun arranging the faces in a pattern she thought was perfect along the tread provided for this craft. Within minutes, she was sporting her newest piece of jewellery.

The young gentleman in our home is a born explorer. The binocular craft was the perfect activity for him to do. After following the simple instructions and placed the foam stickers on to create his own personal design, my little guy was ready to discover what our home looked like up close.
A collage of photos of a boy putting together and using a pair of binoculars.
Both kids really had fun creating the elephant felt puppet. It was a fun craft that also allowed for them to gain a little life experience by having to learn how to sew their new friend together. It was a bit difficult to find all of the holes to thread the needle through, but they liked being able to do a “big person” task.
A collage of photos of kids making and showing a felt elephant.
We were also missing an inner ear flap, but I fashioned a makeshift one to make up for this loss. The glue dots were an easy way to put the pieces of the elephant’s face together, but I wished there were more of them to use. The end result was a soft and fun playmate to create stories with.
The lion head stick puppet was really simple for my son to create. All we had to do was follow the example of the face provided on the pamphlet provided in order to see which of the pieces of the face went where to have a cute puppet to play with.
A collage of photos of a boy making and holding a stick puppet.
My daughter also liked colouring the giraffe printable sheet. Since she considers herself to be a bit of an artist, she went against the grain, making this animal an extremely colourful version of what most would expect this creature to look like. I loved that crayons were included, so there were no assumptions made as to whether the child had access to crayons on hand.
A collage of photos of the giraffe colouring sheet.
The STEM catapult made my son’s eyes light up when he realizes what this activity could do. After following the example on the pamphlet, we out this mini structure together. He was so happy to start launching the sparkly pom poms around our home. He asked a lot of questions as to how a catapult worked, getting his mind whirling about this STEM toy.

What I really like about myfunvelope is that most of the contents of the envelope are portable. They can easily be taken on a train or a car ride to help kids entertained while en route to your destination. I could even see how a child could have fun doing these activities while at home when they are not feeling well. These activities are also ones that can be used over and over again, so the fun can go on for many days to come.
One of the things I wished there was more of was instructions. Younger children may have a bit of a problem understanding how to put together activities like the catapult because it is not explained step by step. You had to look on the pamphlet and figure out how to assemble it.
Overall, my kids enjoyed opening up their myfunvelope subscription set. There was a lot to do, so the activities could be spread out over a couple of days or on a not so favourable day outside. Many of the activities were easy to create on their own, so they can become independent learners. I did had a few issues with this subscription service, but they were not so much that it would take away from the overall enjoyment of this service.
We found out more about myfunvelope by checking out their Facebook and Instagram pages! Take a look for yourself for fun sets for your child to discover!

You may be eager to take your children out on the road with you this summer, but before you do you should be prepared to keep them healthy. A sick child is not a happy child, and an unhappy child could make your summer a difficult one.
In addition to making sure you have your driver’s license, passports and spending money ready, you also need to be prepared to keep your children healthy. A healthy child is a happy child, and a happy child will give you less to worry about when you’re on vacation.
Let’s take a look at some of the top tips that could help you keep your children healthy this summer.
How To Keep Your Children Healthy If You’re Spending The Summer On The Road: 3 Top Tips
1. Keep Your Little Ones Covered
If the sun is beating down, and you want to venture outside, please keep your little ones covered. Make sure they are wearing a hat, sunglasses, and some sunscreen.
You’ll also need to keep your children hydrated, so make sure they always have access to water, juice, or fresh fruit, so they can quench their thirst.
2. Keep The Bugs Away
If you plan on visiting woodland, or you’re thinking of going camping, you need to keep the bugs away from your children. Buy some insect repellent, making sure you have enough in stock so you can use it every day. Bug and insect bites can be quite sore, and little ones won’t have the patience to deal with them very well, so you need to work on prevention rather than cure.
Just before you put your children to bed, check them for bites and stings, be sure to check their whole body, and their head so you can deal with anything you come across.
3. Update Your First Aid Kit
If you’re going to be spending a lot of time away from home, you need to make sure you have a well-stocked first aid kit with you to help keep your children healthy. Stock the kit with medications, bandages, tweezers, antiseptic cream, and band aids. You should also think about purchasing painkillers that are suitable for children, and additional asthma inhalers and other regularly taken medicines too.
You should also top up on those bite and sting-relief lotions, even if you are planning on keeping your children away from bugs and insects. It’s better to be prepared than to have an unwell child traveling with you. Having a well-stocked first aid kit will let you deal with any problems that arise, and ensure you and your little ones have a great vacation.
Use the above 3 top tips to keep your children healthy this summer. Cover them up when the sun is beating down, and give them plenty of fluids so they don’t become dehydrated. Keep those nasty bugs away, and top up your first aid kit so you can come to the rescue should you need to. Keep your child happy on vacation, and you’ll all have a summer to remember.
Is clutter in your garage getting the best of you? Do you spend more time than necessary searching for things you need. If so, keep reading. These handy garage organization tips are just for you!
Tools organized on a wall in a garage
1. Take Advantage of Wall Space
Don’t let wall space in your garage go to waste. Buy inexpensive pieces of pegboard and create a hanging storage space for your tools and similar items. Another great option is pre-built storage racks, suitable for hanging.
2. Use Storage Bins
Plastic storage bins are a great tool for keeping everything in your garage organized. They’re durable, waterproof and many styles feature locking lids to keep contents from spilling if they tip.
These bins tend to be stackable, which makes it easier to store small, loose items efficiently. Stacking eliminates the need to bend in an uncomfortable position to find what you’re looking for. Plastic storage bins are readily available in a variety of shapes and sizes to fit almost every organizational needs.
Garage
3. Group Similar Items Together
Grouping similar items together is smart, because it saves time and frustration. For example, if you generally scatter tools throughout your garage, it makes it necessary to comb the entire area to locate the item you’re searching for.
4. Toss Things You Don’t Need
A common problem with garage organization is owning too much stuff. Go through everything and toss or donate the items you don’t use anymore. Let’s face it, the less you store, the easier it is to keep track of things.
Shed
5. Store Garden Tools in a Shed
Storing a mower and lawn and garden tools in the garage can really take up a lot of space. One solution is to keep these things in a shed. In the event you currently don’t own one, buying a smaller shed to store things in can be a worthwhile investment when it comes to the space it saves you in the garage.
5 Easy Garage Organization Tips
These are just a few handy tips to better organize your garage. The best thing about them is you don’t need to take advantage of all of all five of them at once. Even committing an hour or so every day gets you one step closer to a job well done!

Toronto-Based Caterers Have Opened Restaurants All Over The City
Have you ever left a spectacular event and thought to yourself how nice it would be to taste that same food again? What if the quality of catered food was available just around the corner from your neighbourhood? Now you don’t have to wait until the next corporate party or wedding shower comes around. Presently, your favourite catering companies have started to open up spots of their own around the city, functioning as cafes, restaurants, and bistros where you can experience their unique blend of tastes without there needing to be a grand occasion to justify it.
One solid example of caterer’s working in Toronto are The Food Dudes — who have helped reinvigorate the food movement with their flagship bar Rasa in Toronto’s Harbord Village. The creators envisioned it as a relaxing environment where patrons could enjoy a meal and a drink, as well as a space where the culture of culinary quality and curiosity of the company are brought to life with the chef’s inventive fare. On Mondays, guests can enjoy a set menu for $40 per person which includes a chopped salad, choice of two menu items, and a sweet surprise to finish.
Appetizers
More recently however, within the last two years, they’ve opened up two more spaces. Their southern style restaurant Omaw on the Ossington strip specializes in BBQ, grilled seafood dishes, and hot chicken dishes that really embody the bold, meaty flavours of the southern United States. All are complimented by the chef’s artistic presentation. Their spring menu currently features hushpuppies, jerk clams, catfish, and hanger steak among others.
As well, you can visit Pantry situated in the former Doria space of Toronto’s Summerhill neighbourhood. Here are options for flexitarians who enjoy a quick service lunch with a wealth of healthy options daily. It’s a perfect alternative to typical fast food for those who want to eat well while on the go. This space has cafeterias style takeout counter, eliminating wait times, with combo-driven boxes filled with fresh proteins and choice of sides. Menu items include brisket and turkey with sides of general Tao brussels sprouts, mac n’ cheese, or their classic take on chicken and waffles.
Food on a plate
When your favourite catering companies are making choices to expand and really create spaces even the wandering tourist or young working professional can access at any time, you know they’re looking to foster relationships around a culture of food across the city. Not only do they care about the events of the clients they cater for, they’re inviting everyone to partake in the culinary experience, making it accessible. As a result, they have grown their once small, home-based operation into the city’s most revered, innovative and adaptive food service company.
They consistently raise the bar by anticipating and fulfilling the dynamic needs of the modern metropolitan person, such as a desire for fresh and local ingredients, and sophisticated original fare that is budget friendly. Next time you’re out and about looking to curb your hunger, give one of these unique and intimate spots a try.
Are you looking for ways to keep your family occupied this summer? Fortunately, there are a number of things you can do at no cost. You will find below a list of 12 fun and free summer activities for the family!
Some parents find summer vacation a blessing, others a curse. Today’s technology should block out that “boredom” word all together. In many cases parents find themselves dealing with children who are so used to modern conveniences, they have exhausted these fun things and once again are bored.
Fun and Free Family Summer Activities
Many parents make the mistake of allowing their child to loaf while on summer vacation. They the very common excuse: “they have worked so hard all year, they need to relax”. Allowing children to lay around and play video games, watch television, and sleep all day does not make for very good memories, nor is it good for their health. Children need stimulation. Many activities are inexpensive, easy, and fun.
1. Go exploring
Are there local parks, national forests, beaches, lakes or other things you have never done in your local area? You can generally enjoy these places for free or almost for free.
2. Read a book
You can take your kids to the library to borrow books for free or grab a book from you have at home that you haven’t read in a while and then enjoy them outside. Whether you end up reading at the local park or in a hammock in your backyard, this can be a lot of fun!
3. Go camping
Whether you decide to campout in your backyard or if you go to a state or national park, camping can be a fun and (nearly) free summer activity for the family.
4. Start a garden
Gardening can be a lot of fun, especially for young children. Whether you plant a flower garden or a vegetable garden, this can be a fun summer activity for the whole family.
5. Find free attractions
Zoos and museums typically offer free days during the summer. Check out their websites to find out when you should visit.
6. Go fishing
Fishing can be a fun activity for you to enjoy together as a family.
7. Healthy cold treats
Make your own popsicles, slushies and slurpees with real fruit juice.
8.Watch the sunrise (or sunset)
Grab the family and head out in your backyard, on a dock or a balcony to watch the sunrise or the sunset. Make sure to take some photos!
9. Movie Night
On an evening, why not watch a fun movie with the family. You can even have a special movie night it in your backyard with a portable movie projector in front of a white sheet on your fence.
10. Let them walk
Taking a walk is a great way to get your child out of the house and allow them to have a breath of fresh air. Make a fun day out of it. Walk with them to the park, or to the local ice cream stand. Taking a walk on a summer day is a great way to kill time and allow for exercise. Walking will help you both feel better as well. Children with active parents, who encourage their children to be active will likely grow up to be healthier adults.
11. Play a game together
On those rainy summer days pulling out some board games can be a long lasting fond memory to a child. Remember when you were young, playing board games was likely a great time for you. Make those memories with your child. Pop some popcorn and sit around the table, or on the living room floor. This time will also allow you to catch up on your child’s life and allow him to catch up on yours.
12. Take them Geo Caching
Many folks with ask “what in the world is this”? Geo Caching is a treasure hunt, for adults as well as children, where you look for coordinates on the website, and use either GPS or a compass and find a treasure of some sort. Geo Caching is free for anyone and kills a great deal of time. Treasures can range from: restaurant tickets, teddy bears, toys, jewelry, etc.

If you’re looking for an escape from reality this summer, you may be wondering what you can do on a limited budget. Fortunately, there are a number of ways you can enjoy yourself while not spending loads of money.
Here are some tips for planning a summer vacation on a budget:
1. Consider taking a staycation. If you’ve been wanting to check out that local water or amusement park, why not take the opportunity to do so? Another option is to go camping at a local state or national park.
2. Look for ways to save money. Check out sites like Groupon, RetailMeNot, and LivingSocial for deals and coupons that you can use during your trip. This can lead to huge savings.
3. Find free or low cost things to do. Museums, zoos, and other attractions sometimes offer free days. Also find out what other free or low cost attractions you and your family may be interested in, such as local parks or public pools.
Piggy bank and a pair of sunglasses on the sand
4. Avoid traveling during the holidays. Summer holiday weekends are very popular times for people to vacation, which means that you’ll end up paying more money for your hotel room or travel expenses.
5. Consider bringing friends or family. Believe it or not, this can save you bundles of money. If you’re going to the beach, for example, it’s generally less expensive to rent a house for the week than to stay at a hotel.
6. Don’t eat out for every meal. Packing your own meals is one of the most effective ways to save money on a vacation. Bake muffins and snacks the day before you are leaving and bring them with you on the trip. If you plan to stay at a hotel, ask if they have a compact refrigerator in the room so you can store some food. Head out to a local grocery store to purchase lunch items for a picnic and add fruits, snacks and water bottles.
These are just some tips for planning a summer vacation on a budget!
