Recycle Your Unwanted Electronics to See #WhatsInsideYours

12

Families are becoming more reliant on technology to get through life nowadays. I remember when we wrote letters and called to stay in touch with people, read the morning newspaper to catch up on what was happening in the world, and either wrote out or clacked away on a typewriter to write out a report. Now we have devices that have pretty much made these methods of communication out-of-date. The funny thing about these devices is that they also seem to become obsolete just about as quickly as they are created.

Here are just some of the devices that my family no longer uses because they have either become obsolete, or they have replaced by a newer product.

For me, it will be hard to say goodbye to the laptop and the smartphone. They have been with me for years, and they were both my first devices of their kind. I have had both of them before my two younger children were born, and they helped to share different milestones of my family’s life while they were operational. Now I have to let go of these “family treasures,” but I to do them want responsibly.

OESLove

Since devices are becoming more and more expendable, they are being tossed away when they can be of use to someone in some way, shape or form. This is creating electronic waste or e-waste. One way that these devices can stop clogging up our homes and landfills is by recycling them. The Ontario Electronic Stewardship (OES) is a not-for-profit industry organization that looks over the responsible reuse and recycling of unwanted electronics. They do so through a program that includes numerous OES-approved collection sites and many other affiliate sites across Ontario. They are trying to help people like me to learn and to recycle unwanted and out-of-date electronics instead of throwing them away into our landfills. Below are some methods you can use in order to have the devices you no longer need recycled.

1 Recycle Stations
You can drop off devices and electronics you no longer need at a recycle station. There are many of them throughout Ontario. At these recycling centres, your electronics are collected and sorted. They are then sent to and Electronic Products Recycling Association (EPRA)-approved recycling facility to remove any substances that may harm the environment. The remaining parts are then separated in order to find recyclable material such as metals, plastics and glass so they can be used to make new products. RecycleYourElectronics.ca is a site where you can go to find out which your electronics can be recycled in Ontario, what can be refurbished, and can show you where the closet recycling centres are you with 25 km.

2 Giving Back to Our Community
Donating your unwanted electronics is another way these items will not find their way into our landfills. There are many organizations around Ottawa and Ontario that will take these devices and turn it around so that it benefits the community. If drop off your e-waste to one great organizations, some or all of the proceeds from these donations will go towards supporting our community! It could go towards providing food, creating shelter, giving families these devices who could not afford to pay for them on their own, or providing funds for research to finding a cure for a disease that is afflicting many Canadians who live among us. As much as getting something feels great, giving something that will help others in so many ways feels great, too!

3 Getting a Little Something for Yourself
It is great to help out your community and the environment, but sometimes, there should be something in it for yourself, too. There are some companies that will take your e-waste and give you something in return. Some of them are trying to reduce the amount of minerals that are taken out of the earth to make new devices by reselling your unwanted items. They will take your devices and will they may apply it towards store credit towards the purchase of an item, or they may give you cash back for the precious materials that hidden beneath the metal or plastic covers of your devices. Some of these electronics use copper, gold or other precious metals to produce these devices, so your unwanted electronics could end up being another person’s treasure! Giving your e-waste to a retailer who will give you something back is a win-win-win situation. You get a perk from the retailer; the retailer gets a product they can resell to someone else, and the environment will have fewer minerals extracted from it and polluting it.

These are just some of the ways that families can recycle their e-waste in order to reduce the amount of e-waste in our landfills and help limit the amount of materials that are being harvested from the earth to create new electronic devices. It may not seem like a lot, but just think about the amount of unwanted devices around your home. Then think about the amount of homes within your community with families that are piling up with devices. Eventually they will have to go somewhere, and some people may decide to put them in the trash. That would be a lot of e-waste that could have a better purpose and less harmful outcome to our environment elsewhere.

Here is one of a series of funny videos the OES created to help get the word out about the significance of seeing what’s inside your unwanted electronics by reusing and recycling them.

I hope that you were able to see the benefits of recycling and reusing electronic devices, find the devices around your home that no longer work or are no longer needed, then visit RecycleYourElectronics.ca to see where the closest electronic collection site is to give some new life to not only the device, but to our communities and to our environment as well.

10 Simple Ways to Reconnect with Yourself and Reduce Stress

The first step to realizing how your thoughts and emotions are influencing your physical health is to pay attention and increase awareness of yourself. Feel free to try one or all of the following strategies. You will be most effective at reconnecting with your inner self using the strategy that you resonate with the most. Below are 10 Simple Ways to Reconnect with Yourself and reduce stress!

In holistic health care, the mind and the body cannot be separated and one’s health depends on the proper communication between the mind and the body. There is an emerging scientific field called ‘Psychoneuroimmunology”, which basically investigates the relationship between your thoughts and emotions (psycho), the response of your nervous system to these emotions and the neurotransmitters released (neuro), and the effects of these neurotransmitters on the immune system (immunology).

10 Simple Ways to Reconnect with Yourself and Reduce Stress

10 ways to reconnect with yourself and Reduce Stress

More research is coming out these days to show that there is a strong relationship between mental/emotional health and physical health which suggests that when a person experiences a physical illness, their mental/emotional state should also be explored rather than ignored and viewed as an isolated and separate entity. See how these 10 ways to reconnect with your thoughts and emotions can help you.

1. Treat yourself

Take 15 minutes per day and do something nice for yourself like reading something you love, taking a brisk walk, phoning an old friend, or soaking in a warm bath.

2. Commune with nature

Sit with your flowers, go for a walk, go to the beach, walk barefoot on the grass, sit under a tree or smile at the sun. Being present with nature and listening to the natural sounds of the world can help us feel grounded and put us in touch with our inner selves.

3. Choose an activity

Choose an activity like pilates, yoga, meditation, guided imagery, reiki, acupuncture or massage therapy to help manage stress and unwind from the business of life.

4. Physical activities

Aim to participate in physical activity 30 minutes, 5 times per week. Exercise helps prevent many diseases, improves anxiety and depression and is a useful tool for relieving stress.

10 Simple Ways to Reconnect with Yourself and Reduce Stress

5. Journal, start a blog or phone a friend

Expressing your emotions on a regular basis will assist you in the process of working through them and letting them go. Having social support and someone you can bounce your ideas off of or work through your conflicts with is valuable to a sense of well-being.

6.Set short and long term goals for your personal aspiration

These can range from taking a cooking class, to changing careers or planning a vacation.  Making your personal aspirations a priority is part of balancing the parts of your life.  Breaking down your long term goals into smaller steps can make things more manageable and easier to achieve.

7. Positive Energy

At work or at home, pair up with people you like to be around and can exchange positive energy with.  You can also exchange positive energy with your pets.

8.Take control of your workplace,

Don’t let your workplace control you. For example, make your breaks/lunch time a priority and set aside your work. Schedule specific times to respond to e-mails and phone messages. Delegate as much work as you can, you do not have to do everything.

9. Laugh

Don’t be so hard on yourself and find humour in your life. Don’t be afraid to laugh at yourself or enjoy a good romantic comedy.

10. Turn perceived `wasted` time into enjoyable time

For example, during the commute to work read a book/magazine you love, listen to an e-book or your favourite music, close your eyes and meditate if you ride the subway. Small acts you enjoy can be incorporated into the mundane things of life such as cooking and cleaning the bathroom. You can turn ordinary moments into extraordinary inspiring ones.

Doing any of the above will leave you feeling relaxed, grounded with a clear mind to help you get through your busy day. Enjoy!

Some Exercise Facts To Help You Get Motivated and Stay Motivated

9

There are many benefits to exercising regularly, such as looking good, feeling sharper, and an improved sex life. But you probably already knew all that. The trouble is getting motivated to start exercising in the first place, and even more challenging, staying motivated to work out regularly. The good news is that there are plenty of ways to inject some exercise enthusiasm into your life.

Some Exercise Facts To Help You Get Motivated and Stay Motivated

Create Achievable Goals

One of the biggest motivation killers is unreachable goals. Many people set huge fitness goals for themselves and then within a few weeks of exercising they quickly realize that such achievements will be a little more difficult than they thought.

If you set yourself achievable goals, you will find it easier to stay motivated to hit further targets. Break the large overall target of say, losing 100 lbs, into smaller manageable chunks such as lose 10 lbs in one month.

Each month your motivation is boosted with the reward of reaching, or even exceeding, your target. Within 10 months you will have met your overall goal.

Generate a Workout Playlist

Listening to music while working out can improve your motivation and performance according to some studies. This is because “Music listening can be an effective dissociation strategy”. As you listen to the music you lose some perception of effort and body fatigue, which helps you to push yourself harder. This is why it is a good idea to load cell phones with your favourite songs. You will go into your workouts armed with a super motivating playlist. The ideal songs to include are generally fast songs with strong beats.

Design a Motivator Diet

Fruits, vegetables and nuts.

Poor eating habits can lead to fatigue and a general lack of motivation as well as many health hazards. Exercise routines go hand in hand with good nutrition and when you adapt your diet to include healthier food options, you will naturally start to feel more energized and tuned for exercise.

It can take a little while to find the right nutrition balance, but, in general, you should make an effort to include lots of vegetables such as spinach, fruits such as bananas, and heart healthy oils such as natural coconut oil. In fact, including coconut oil in your diet has a variety of benefits, as detailed in this infographic.

Make Exercise Part of Your Daily Schedule

Less than 5% of adults participate in 30 minutes of physical activity each day. In our increasingly busy daily routines, the first thing to get chopped from the itinerary is the workout. When we consider the mental, physical, and emotional benefits of regular exercise, it is clear that a re-prioritization of the daily schedule is required.

If you make a determined effort to get some exercise daily, it will soon become second nature like going to work or eating. You will most likely have to fight off an avalanche of excuses to begin with, but over time you will find fewer reasons not to work out.

Find Variation to Your Workouts

We humans naturally need variety in order to remain motivated in life. This, of course, applies to our workouts, which can quickly become dull and monotonous. When your routine becomes dull and you are not having fun you will quickly begin to look for excuses to be somewhere else. Exercise can take many different forms; a trail run, Zumba class, tai chi, take your pick and switch things up from time to time. Try running the reverse of your usual running route, or explore a new route altogether. If you always exercise outside, why not try out a new class inside gym for a change.

Half the battle is won if you can keep yourself motivated to exercise regularly and for the long term. It may take a little extra effort, but with a few small changes you will soon become naturally motivated to keep reaching for those fitness goals. On the way, you will be rewarded with such benefits as lower mortality risks, more energy, and the ability to better cope with your other daily routines.

Rescheduling My Schedule: Working from Home with Kids

9

Working from home has its advantages! Working from home with kids is challenging! I think that being a blogger is one of the best hobbies/jobs I have ever had. No, seriously. I make my own hours, I accept assignments or choose topics that I want to write about, and I can blog from anywhere due to the wonderful advances in technology. What I also have to take into account is that I have other responsibilities: my family, my home, and my extracurricular activities. This is why I know that when I create a writing schedule for myself, I know that it will be shuffled, and I will have to reschedule my schedule from time to time in order to make everything happen while blogging from home.

Rescheduling My Schedule: Working from Home with Kids

Rescheduling My Schedule: Working from Home with Kids
Laptop sitting on a sofa

Below is a list of things I do in order to make my writing schedule work for me.

1. Get To Know Your Boss’ Schedule

I have three kids, two of them are too young to go to school. Both of my kids could be in daycare or in a pre-school, but I really enjoy being a stay-at-home parent. I love taking care of them, and being around them. They are everywhere and into everything, but that is what kids do at this age, and they learn from exploring their world. This is why I take this fact into consideration when taking on assignments and planning when I am going to write posts. Since they are my world, they are also my “bosses”. So getting to know their schedule can then help me figure out approximately how much time during the day I have to write. A typical day looks like this:

Mornings

  • Wake up
  • Breakfast
  • Entertain (colouring, playing with toys, reading, listening to music, TV time)
  • Park/Bike Ride
  • Snack/Lunch 1
  • Nap

Afternoons

  • Lunch/Snack 2
  • Park

Evenings

  • Entertain while making dinner/bath/family time
  • Dinner
  • Quiet Time
Rescheduling My Schedule: Working from Home with Kids

It may not look like a lot happens in throughout their day, but trust me, it does! This is why I need to know where their heads are and what they are like in order to get a sense of when I can fit in time to write. This schedule could get flipped around a bit if one or both of them have an appointment, have a bad night’s sleep/grumpy day, become sick, or if we have company over to visit. We try to stick to this schedule for them in order for them to have some stability in their day as well. Most days are good, and I can use their schedule as a base to make my schedule.

2. You Schedule Should NEVER Be a Firm One

Just as your kids’ schedule will never run like clockwork, neither should your writing schedule. There will be times that life decides to throw a monkey wrench into your plans, and it could take you away from your writing schedule. Your kids could get sick. You have other errands to do during the day. You could get an emergency phone call that you have to deal with. If you had a fixed schedule, any number of these incidents could throw off your schedule, putting you behind.

What I like to do is to set loose guidelines for my deadlines for myself. This way, I try to finish my assignments as close to its actual deadline as possible. For me, it’s like setting my clocks in my home a little bit ahead so I get up and go earlier than I need to so I will not be late. If I do finish a post earlier than I thought I would, this gives me more downtime to hang out with my kids, and it allows me to take on other assignments if I can.

3. Write It Down, Write It Down, Write It Down!

There are times when I could become busy and accept a lot of post requests. To keep up with all of the writing I have to do, as well as the schedules of my kids, I have to write down what has to be done and their deadlines. If I do not write assignments down, something will go through the cracks, and something will be forgotten.

There are many ways of organizing yourself in order to keep track of all of everything you have to do. Me, I write down all of my assignments the old fashion way as well as the newer, tech-friendly way. My desk has a white board where I write down all of my assignments and their deadlines.

TDOldSchedule-A

Throughout the week, I cross off what I have accomplished or what is awaiting approval, so I get a sense of what is left to tackle on my to-do list. I also jot down post I need to write in my smartphone in my Calendar application.

New Schedule Method Collage

This way, I can get notifications as to when posts are due and what is coming up later down the road. Both of these methods are so helpful to helping me schedule future posts as well.

4. Learn How To Say “No”

This tip is an easy one to explain. I know it is great to have a lot of proposals given to you, but there are those times that you simply cannot take on more work because of family priorities or other deadlines. Putting too much onto your plate will only stress you out, and you could, potentially, miss a deadline. This could lead to being passed up for future opportunities. It is better to wait for another opportunity to come around than to try to do too much and not be able to do something else.

Rescheduling My Schedule: Working from Home with Kids

5. Come Up For Air

As much as getting a lot of writing done every day would be ideal, I do have to think about scheduling “Me Time.” I need some time to decompress from everything that is happening for the day, and I find that I cannot do this by shutting my eyes and falling asleep at night. I work best when I have time peppered throughout the day to not be thinking about a post that has to go o

When I have these times to shut the “writing machine” down and to think about something else though, I am also glad. I am more relaxed, and I may become inspired or think of an idea about something that I will be writing about because I am not writing. Depending on the time of day, I like exploring the world with my kids, having some quite time with my other half, watching my “stories,” checking out my social media sites, or surfing the Internet to find the best GIC rates in Canada for my investments. It could be only be five minutes, but that time away from that post feels great!

So, there you have it! These are my tips I use to reschedule my schedule while at home with my kids. It took a bit of experimentation to figure out what works for me where having some form of a writing schedule down pat, but once I got into (somewhat) of a rhythm, I learned what my limitations are, and how much I could realistically do day-to-day. I also learned how to make fun time for kids, my other half and for myself. These tips do not just pertain to blogging, but to other professions or hobbies you may do while at home with your kids.

What other tips do you have for parents who need help rescheduling their schedules because they are working from home?

5 Simple Exercises For Normal Delivery

10
ElvisHuang / Foter / CC BY-NC-ND

Most people objected to my decision of having a normal delivery of my second child, after a C-section for my firstborn. I was adamant. I wanted a healthy, normal delivery for my second child. The first pregnancy and delivery had been a tricky affair. However, it didn’t affect my first born, who is healthy and thriving. Touchwood! My plan for normal delivery put me on a reading spree. I scoured books on normal childbirth, suggested foods and exercise!

Exercise should be started within the first trimester or second trimester to get you well on the path of normal delivery. Significant research has been done on the benefits of exercising during pregnancy. It is considered safe for both mama and the fetus. My extensive reading brought me several solutions, which have to be started from the first or second trimester. The top five favorite was

  1. Kegel Exercises: The muscles that support bladder, uterus and bowels are strengthened by practicing Kegel exercises. During pregnancy, strengthening of these muscles is beneficial for labor and birth. The pelvic muscles are used to push the baby out at the time of the delivery. The correct muscle group is identified by stopping the urinary stream for a few counts. It is advised to practice this 3-4 times a day. It takes duration of minimum six weeks for the pelvic muscles to become stronger.
  2. Yoga: Yoga has been a popular way to a healthy lifestyle. It is helpful in pregnancy and gives the body the necessary endurance to have a normal delivery. Yoga provides elasticity in the body which is much needed during delivery. The breathing exercises in Yoga help the mother and baby for better respiration and come handy during delivery. It also calms the frazzled nerves and reduces stress that is induced in pregnancy. It helps in striking a balance of physical and mental well being. A mother’s moods, temperament is known to affect the baby.
  3. Walking: Taking your toddler and hubby to the neighborhood park is the healthiest trick to ease your delivery. A solitary walk will also help you revel in the moment of carrying your baby inside and experience the bliss. This basic form of exercise keeps the excess fat off during your baby bump days. Also, keeps your and the baby’s weight in check. An overweight baby is difficult to deliver the normal way. Walking keeps the pregnancy blood pressure at bay and keeps you physically fit. It is an effective stress busting solution during pregnancy.
  4. Swimming Or Aquatic Activity: Pregnancy during hot summer months definitely calls for water exercises. Swimming and other sports like water aerobics, water walking are great ways to exercise during pregnancy without overheating. It is an excellent cardiovascular exercise and the cushioning effect of water prevents any injury. Water exercising is ideal for fitness and alleviates symptoms of back pain and leg swelling experienced by pregnant women. The cool waters are always an inviting ground for exercise.
  5. Power Squats: Squatting is the easiest and comfortable exercise to practice for childbirth. It provides strength while improving balance and flexibility. The Indian style toilet posture helps in loosening and contracting pelvic muscles. Squats lessen the delivery pain and make it easier to have a normal childbirth. Squatting can be done with the aid of a ball or by leaning against a tree.

A normal delivery can definitely be achieved by adequate measures in terms of exercise, food, habits etc. Exercising and being fit throughout the pregnancy is the key to a healthy baby and comfortable delivery. However, you’ve to avoid high intensity workouts and exercise in moderation. The intensity standard and interpretation varies as it is dependent on your fitness levels. Also, activities that have a risk of falling should be avoided at all levels.

Alternating these activities during my pregnancy helped me achieve my dream labor. I gave birth to a healthy girl and was out of the nursing home in a day. Trusting my gut about the delivery was essential to me. Most often, we go by what everyone says and give in to the surrounding pressure. Normal delivery is any day a healthier choice, as compared to C-section.

Have You Considered Registering for Online University Classes?

Back in the late 1980s when I studied Business at Algonquin College in Ottawa, online courses were not offered to students. When I took a few in-room classes in the evening back in the 90’s to study in Nonprofit Management, I have to admit that being able to take college or university classes at home would have been much more ideal for me. I found it really difficult to keep up with deadlines at work, my family life, and having to commit to studying in the classroom on a set evening 45 minutes away from home. So, I eventually stopped taking evening classes.

Luckily nowadays, students have the opportunity to enjoy distance learning in the comfort of their own home and to study at their own pace. Ideally, this would be helpful for working students/mothers trying to acquire a post-secondary education, achieve higher education, or wanting a career change. Once I had children, I stopped signing up for classes all together, but I am definitely thinking about registering for a program or just some classes in Communications once both my children are in a post-secondary education in about 2 years. Since creating the Ottawa Mommy Club over 3 years ago and the BConnected Conference this spring, I found a new passion in social media and in event planning, therefore I would like to improve my knowledge in these fields through online courses. I find them so convenient to study just about any time of the day, and anywhere that you can bring a laptop and have wireless Internet.

Campus_0081_rev_sz

Finding a reputable university to register for online courses is a top priority for me. It’s important to make sure they are fully accredited and recognized by other post-secondary institutions such as the Thompson Rivers University, Open Learning (TRU-OL), so you can take a single course and transfer the credits to another institution or complete an entire program.

Thompson Rivers University,Open Learning offers over 57 programs and 590 courses in a variety of flexible formats, including print-based and web-based formats. You can register for trades to traditional academics, certificates to bachelor and graduate degrees, academic as well as professional career paths. They offer such flexibility in studying that you don’t have any excuses not to achieve a higher education any more. Talk about redefining what a “university” means and breaking through traditional boundaries of a post-secondary education. Whether taking a single course for work, personal knowledge, or for a full degree, the Thompson Rivers University has the learning option for you. You can also receive academic credit for past learning that means you spend less time and money on your degree. You’ve worked hard so why should you have to start from scratch?

Online classes do not mean that you study just on your own. You actually have the full support of your course Open Learning Faculty Member to help with your questions and to provide some guidance. You may also collaborate with other students in your course.

I really had no idea how easy it was to register until I went on their website. First of all, any adult can register for open admission for Thompson Rivers University, Open Learning, so you don’t have to supply high school transcripts or hold a particular GPA. Thompson Rivers University is an accredited public post-secondary institution with membership in the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada (AUCC). Programs offered through Thompson Rivers University, Open Learning include adult secondary school completion, certificates, and diplomas (including advanced and post-baccalaureate), associate degrees, bachelor’s degrees and graduate degrees. You can enroll in open learning courses at any time because of the flexible course options, so no need to wait for fall, winter or spring to sign up anymore.

To register for an open learning course:

  1. Select a course and read the course description to ensure you have the tools and prerequisites necessary to complete the course
  2. Confirm course availability
  3. Review the course fees
  4. Proceed to Register
  5. Enter your info
  6. Pay

I was given a hands-on opportunity to register for an online course with Thompson Rivers University, BBUS 3611 – Open Thinking. I was emailed a URL of the course blackboard to sign in with my username and password and enter my profile. Afterwards, I was able to view my course guidelines:

Welcome to the Open Thinking course! This course is designed to provide you with the understanding, knowledge, and skills to apply creative strategies and to embrace open thinking.

Open Thinking involves the integrated use of good creative and strategic thinking. This course will lead you through the concepts and techniques that encourage effective Open Thinking.

And I also looked at the key concepts covered in this course, the summary of activities, and the assessment strategies. The navigation page is easy to understand and to maneuver, and the home page features the modules you will use to successfully complete your course. The dashboard offers a discussion/forum page, my assignments, a calendar, a chat room for collaboration sessions, course messages, my grades, and even my own internal email service.

Shortly after I registered, I received a welcoming message from my instructor, Anne, in the course messages. She mentioned that “the BBUS 3611- Open Thinking course actually won a major international award for its design, content, and teaching. Plus the course has a very high completion rates – 95 to 100%. “It unfolds slowly, but the majority of students when they reach the end of the course take the time to let me know they really enjoyed it and that the experience was very positive for them.”

course messages (Medium)

I emailed her back and asked a few questions. These were her answers, “The actual course runs for 14 weeks – so regular students work through it over the 14 weeks. It is a paced course which means students work in particular modules, all together, and then move on to the next module. It helps to form a supportive and strong cohort group that acts as a resource to each other and it enhances deeper learning, as we dialogue about the study material in the discussion areas. I can say that I have had many mothers as students in my courses (both working and not) and they have used them to ladder up to degrees. It has worked very well for students with additional demands on their time, as you can choose to work in the course over the hours of the days that suit you.”

As you can see, Thompson Rivers University takes great pride in supporting students to achieve their individual academic needs in order to fulfill their dreams of completing a degree or a certificate, or just helping them acquire job advancement in their field.

Eating Well with Chef Michael Smith’s Family Meals – A Review

8

flavour shackI am a huge fan of Chef Michael Smith. I have avidly watched him on Chef at Home and Chef Abroad, own many of his cookbooks and made a point of stopping by his Flavour Shack in Souris, PEI when I was visiting Prince Edward Island this past summer. His cooking and recipes are appealing to me because of their simple ingredients, their versatility and their Canadian flair. Michael Smith’s newest cookbook, Family Meals follows the same lines as his previous cookbooks by offering new and delicious recipes that are not only nutritious, but are family approved – starting with the ingredients, to meal preparation, to the actual eating of the meal.

I use a Michael Smith recipe at least once a week, if not more. His country bread/city bread has become a staple in my house and his meat recipes are some of my favourites because of their robust flavour created without the use of obscure, hard-to-find ingredients. I am looking forward to adding Family Meals’ slow cooker and pressure cooker recipes to my regular Michael Smith recipe repertoire, especially the all-day sausage lasagna and the bacon baked beans. My husband is looking forward to trying the caboose-style pulled pork with honey mustard slaw.

Eating Well with Chef Michael Smith’s Family Meals – A Review
Chef Michael Smith’s Family Meals Recipe book

Since receiving my review copy of Family Meals last week, I have tried three of the recipes. Firstly, because it was back to school time I made the cinnamon oatmeal cookies recipe. This cookie recipe is not only flavourful, but it makes a ton of cookies that freeze well too, so you will have homemade school treats ready to go for a few weeks! Then for the first morning of school I made overnight oatmeal jars with last-minute stir-ins. I halved the recipe and it still made enough for a couple of days. My daughter loves cold oatmeal, so this was a perfect recipe for her. I love that Michael Smith gave a variety of different ingredients to choose from and encourages you to experiment a bit too. Thirdly, I made the pizza soup. This soup was a hit amongst everyone in my family and is perfect as an after school meal before heading off to an evening activity.

Eating Well with Chef Michael Smith’s Family Meals – A Review

Like all of his cookbooks, Michael Smith’s Family Meals is well-organized with the recipes broken down by sections and by the type of meal i.e., cook ahead, family meals in minutes, vegetables and whole grains, meatless Mondays, and sweets and treats, just to list a few. The photographs of the food as well pictures of his family go hand-in-hand with the recipes in this book – they are the perfect family meals to not only eat with your family, but also to prepare together. The ingredients are simple to find and are probably already in your spice cupboard and pantry. And what you don’t have in your kitchen, Michael encourages you to pick up the freshest of ingredients at your local farmer’s market.

A great fresh ingredient recipe from Family Meals is the avocado salsa recipe. It’s great with tortilla chips or along side the chili cornmeal salmon recipe also found in the cookbook.

I highly recommend Family Meals to anyone who enjoys cooking or who wants to start cooking nutritious family meals that won’t break the bank or go to waste. Most of the recipes won’t take all day to make, are fun to make with kids and many of the recipes are made with ingredients guaranteed to please even the pickiest of taste buds… and if you don’t have all of the ingredients Michael Smith even offers you some “Kitchen Tips” with various substitution suggestions.

For more information on Michael Smith’s latest cookbook, Family Meals visit his website or order it online.

Disclosure: I received a complimentary copy of Michael Smith’s Family Meals from Penguin Canada to review, but the opinions stated in this post are all my own.

The Imagination Movers “Back in Blue” – An Interview

If you’re a parent of a preschooler then you have probably heard of the Imagination Movers. Fans young and old will be thrilled to hear that this fun and energetic band is taking their hit Disney Junior television show on the road in a rock-concert style event that is sure to knock your kid’s socks off (if they haven’t already pulled them off). The Imagination Movers ‘Back in Blue’ Tour will be stopping at the Centrepointe Theatre in Ottawa on Tuesday, September 30, 2014 at 6:30 p.m.  This fun music-filled evening will not only have the Imagination Movers’ signature pop-rock sound, but also audience participation and hilarious hi-jinks that is sure to have everyone laughing!

In a recent interview with the Imagination Movers, I was able to discuss some of the band’s backstory as well as find out what it’s like to be on tour! Below is an excerpt with band member Mover Dave:

Q. I understand that you guys started as a real life band in New Orleans. What made you guys decide to bring it to TV?

A. We started out as dads and regular guys who just wanted to entertain our kids. We started writing music and shortly after that decided to work on a local live-action TV concept. We would do our 9-5 shifts and our dad duties then meet from about 9pm to 1am a few nights a week. We had no idea what we were doing, but we were very passionate about doing… something. The music took off and we put the TV ideas to the side. Shortly after that we played in front of some Disney exectives at Jazzfest in New Orleans. They scooped us up and we made a TV show. To their credit, they surrounded us with awesome people, decided to film in New Orleans post-Katrina and stayed true to our original vision.

Q. Are your songs written individually or as a group? How does a song evolve from written words to being performed?

A. We all share in the songwriting process. Sometimes we all gather and write as a team, other times one person has worked on a song and presents it to the others.  Regardless of the origin, we all have input throughout the evolution of a song. Our approach can also vary depending on if the song is a organic composition on a random topic or if it’s a song written to support the narrative of an episode. The TV compositions usually have some criteria involved along with a pretty tight deadline.

Q. What’s your favourite part of being on tour?

A. Playing music and making families happy is obviously an incredible feeling, but another benefit of touring is people that you meet. We have been all over the world so we have had a chance to talk to folks from all walks of line. Families that have overcome incredible challenges, regional concerns you can’t appreciate from a distance, unique dialects and cuisine. In addition to learning an instrument, every kid should have a goal to travel. Anywhere they can. We’ve had a chance to experience the word from different perspectives and it’s been very enlightening.

Q. Any funny tour stories to share?

A. Before one performance our guitar tech, Wayne, got locked in a bathroom. A soundproof bathroom. With a super heavy door. He finally got a text out but we had to delay the show until the fire department opened the door.

Q. What do you do to prepare for your concerts or do have any pre-concert rituals?

A. We have one ritual that is an absolute must before any performance. We all gather…Movers, sound crew, ushers, promoters and anyone else within shouting distance…put our elbows together, then give one big fist pump and yell Movers. We started doing it with the standard hands together in a circle, but a crew guy thought it was “germy” so the elbows became tradition.

Q. As a group, what would you say is your favourite song or songs to preform on stage?

A. We usually like to play the newest one.

5 Healthy Nut-free Snacks for School

It’s back to school time and lots of parents are asking the question, “What nut-free snacks can I pack for my child?”.  Having a nut-free policy is essential to ensuring the safety of those children with nut allergies.  However, removing nuts can make it challenging to provide snacks that are high in protein. Protein is essential for maintaining your child’s energy level and cognitive function.

Healthy Nut-free Snacks for School

5 nut-free high protein snacks

1. Nut-free trail mix: Make a baggie of sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, pretzels, toasted soy beans and dried fruit. Easy to prep and portion in advance.

2. Hard-boiled egg: To make this boring snack a little more interesting, provide turmeric, curry spices, cayenne, paprika, chopped dill or sage to sprinkle on the egg or to dip the egg into for extra flavour.

3. Edemame: These are whole soy beans in their pods. Easy to find in the frozen vegetable section, they can be pre-boiled and portioned for the week. Sprinkle a little salt on them in the morning to enhance their flavour. Edemame make a fun snack as kids love to pop the beans out of their pods.

4. Greek yogurt: Greek yogurt is high in protein and easy to find in pre-packaged containers for convenience. For a healthier option, purchase pure, unsweetened, unflavoured Greek yogurt in a larger bulk container. Divide into individual portion and add honey, cinnamon, berries, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, chia seeds or hemp hearts for added flavour and protein.

5. Mixed bean salad: Mixed beans are readily available canned. Be sure to rinse the beans thoroughly before use. You can also purchase the beans you like in dried form and make your own personalized mix. Dried bean require soaking and boiling before use so will add to your prep time. Mix all beans and flavour with olive oil, lemon, salt, pepper, ginger, garlic, chili flakes, balsamic vinegar, basil, dill, thyme, cumin, etc. Bean salad is easy to make and you can basically flavour it however you like. An even simpler option is to mix a vinaigrette salad dressing into the beans for flavour, therefore no chopping/crushing of herbs required!

Involve your children in the snack decision making and preparation to figure out what flavours and textures they like!

A 3 day Master Bathroom Refresh with Tips from the Pros #DIYwithBen

My husband and I had our house built 21 years ago within 3 months and at the same time that we were planning our wedding. The contractor gave us the keys to our house the night before we got married. There was definitely lots of planning involved in such a short period including purchasing supplies and materials, scheduling inspections, and shopping for the perfect decorative items. It seems that all I was doing shopping, shopping, and more shopping! I purchased the ceramic tiles for our master bathroom in a light grey tone. I wanted a neutral tile colour as I knew that we would most likely live here the rest of our lives and also be able to match any colour with it. Was I ever wrong! What I had not realized was that the grey tile I choose had an undertone of purple. “We are not painting the bathroom purple!” said my husband, but this is ideally the best paint colour for the walls. I could never find the perfect colour shade that makes you say ‘WOW’ without it being purple. Our master bedroom is painted in a light sand colour, so we decided to go with a similar colour that had grey undertone to it for the master bathroom. It was fine, but no ‘pizzazz’.

Benjamin Moore Century Paint

After 3 years, we were tired of looking at the colour and decided to repaint again. This time around, we went to a Benjamin Moore Century Paint Signature store in Orleans for advice on choosing the right colour for the bathroom. We brought in a ceramic tile to match with some paint chits. Yes, definitely still no purple allowed! Debbie, the store Manager, showed us a few chits she thought would look great with the tile and we eventually went with a grey colour that the undertone is purple called Elephant Grey. The best part is that my husband only sees the grey and not really the purple. We got the ‘Ben in a Bag’ paint bag as part of Benjamin Moore fall promotion to help create that “I can’t believe I did it myself’ room. The ‘ben & ME Bag’ promotion is only available until October 5th, 2014 at a Benjamin Moore participating retailers. The best part is that the ‘ben & ME’ bags are only $109* at a value of $169!

Ben and Me Kit

The ‘ben & ME’ bag contains the following items:

  • 2 gallons of premium paint with 1 quart for trim
  • Sleeve roller, paintbrush, paint tray, drop cloth, paint can opener, and green painters tape
  • How-To Guide with tips that will help make your room look fabulous and even a playlist for your listening pleasure!

ben & Me paint and accessories

My husband has painted our entire house from top to bottom, so he picked up a few tricks along the way; however, the How-t0-guide was extremely helpful. There were some new tips he learned and applied while painting the bathroom. I will share some of the ‘ben & ME’ How-To Guide tips below by numbering them accordingly to the guide. Also, the bag has everything that you need to paint a room, so no need to make a list and search for all the products. I found the ‘ben & ME’ bag to be really convenient and well priced. Whether you are painting for the first time or a DIY enthusiast, the ‘ben & ME’ bag is worth purchasing!

We managed to the give the master bathroom a full refresh in 3 days during the labour day weekend and this is how we did it.

THE PREP

patching

If you have any holes on the walls or ceiling that need to be covered with spackling, you should apply 1 coat daily for 3 days then sand it down. Use a slightly dampened sponge to wipe the dust away on the walls, ceiling and trim, and let it dry. Afterwards, apply a 1 coat of primer and let it dry (if needed apply a second coat) and you are ready to paint. My husband had already applied spackling on a few holes in the ceiling a few weeks prior, so we were ready to paint.

DAY 1

cleaning

1. I stored all of the items that were in the bathroom then comes the cleaning of the tiles, tub, ceiling, walls, trim, mirror, vanity, toilet, etc..

2. The hubby covered the floor with the plastic drop cloth provided in the kit. As he was painting, he moved it around to cover and protect the tub, toilet, vanity, etc.. Always a good idea to protect your furniture, so move it or cover it. Tip #2

3. He applied the green painters tape around the edge of the baseboards, ceramic, lights, vanity and trim of doors. A neat master taping secret: heat-seal the tape’s edge by running your finger, a spoon, or a paint stick along the edge to help it form a stronger seal against paint seepage. Tip #4

DSCN2486 (Small)

4. Up next, painting with a paintbrush the contour of the walls, lights, door, tub, shower and vanity, followed by the walls with a sleeve roller and a 10mm paint roller. Another great tip is to rub a lint brush over your paint roller to get rid of the pesky excess fuzz so they don’t end up painted on your wall. If you don’t have a lint brush, just use the green tape around the roller. Tip #5

lint remover on roller

5. Sometimes, a stray drop ends up on an uncovered area, just use a damp cloth you keep nearby to wipe it ride away. If you miss it and it dries, use a pimple pad that contains alcohol to clean it. Tip #8

6. Also, always paint the edges of the wall first, but only in a small section at a time, so that you apply wet paint over wet paint. You shouldn’t let an area dry around the edges before you paint the middle or you may see the different layers of paint in your finished job. Tip # 9

7. My hubby found out many years ago about painting in a W pattern! This is the best painting technique. Make long and tall W’s with your roller, then go back over them to fill in without picking up the roller. This pattern is perfect for hiding your roller trails on a dried wall. Tip #10

Tip to paint in W

8. When you are finished for the day or waiting for the 1st coat to dry, don’t leave your paint, roller or paintbrush uncovered. Cover or clean the roller tray and put the lid back on your paint can to prevent it from drying. Cover paint brushes and rollers with a plastic wrap or foil and seal all edges to keep the air from them and put them in the refrigerator until you’re ready to use them again. Tip #13

DAY 2

5. I go shopping all day for a new decor! Come on, it’s hard work!

6. In the morning, apply the 2nd coat of paint-Repeat Day 1 number 4. You can paint the 2nd coat after about 4-6 hours of painting the first coat, so you can easily do it in a day. My husband just enjoys taking a day break in between.

7. Remove the green tape. Ideally while the paint is still wet, downward and at a 45 degree angle to help with not pulling some paint off the wall. If this happens just run a sharp blade like an acto knife across the painted edge of the tape before pulling. Tip #12

8. In the afternoon, apply green painters tape on the walls around the trim of the windows, doors, baseboards, etc..

9. Paint the trim with the paintbrush and the 1 quart of paint provided with your kit. Let dry. If a 2nd coat is needed, let dry for 4 hours and in the evening apply 2nd coat.

DSCN2609 (Small)

10. Once you are finished, clean your brushes right away in hot and soapy water. If they are really messy, you can let them sit in hot vinegar for 30 minutes first. Tip # 14

11. Remove the green tape. Ideally while the paint is still wet, downward and at a 45 degree angle to help with not pulling some paint off the wall. If this happens just run a sharp blade like an acto knife across the painted edge of the tape before pulling. Tip #12

DAY 3

Time to decorate and apply new canvas, shelves, baskets, vases, lighting fixture, frame art, candles for a spa theme bathroom!

The results, see for yourself!

I really have no idea how come we did not purchase Benjamin Moore paint and products before this painting project, but we are definitely sold! My husband mentioned that the ben paint has a rich texture, applies very easily, and dries fast. He also liked the 10mm roller that was supplied in the kit, so much that I went back to purchase a few more, and the paint can opener does a better job than using a screwdriver. A big bonus is that there are hardly any paint fumes, which usually give me a headache and can even make me nauseated, but no symptoms this time! My husband and I also enjoyed visiting a Benjamin Moore Signature Store to get professional advice, tips and ideas on our painting project, and having knowledgeable staff that took the time to answer all of our questions. Painting a room is an inexpensive way to completely change the look of the space by spreading a new splash of colour and creating a new theme like our spa bathroom. Up next is painting the master bedroom and the hallway to the bedrooms, so you can be assured that we will use Benjamin Moore paint and take advantage of purchasing the ben & ME bag at a super deal price of $109*!

After many attempts over the years to get the proper paint colour to match,

I can finally say that I really love our master bedroom ensuite bathroom!

Choosing French School

10

Choosing French School

My daughter started Senior Kindergarten this Fall. Or, more specifically, because she goes to a French school: jardin. I remember the nerves when she started in French school. My nerves – as the English-speaking parent.

Child colouring

My husband is French, and we’d made the decision from birth to raise bilingual children and send both our girls to French school because, as they say:

«Le français s’apprend, l’anglais s’attrape. »

Translation?

You learn French. You catch English.

Even in Ottawa, with a large French population, that’s true. And it’s particularly true in a family like ours that is half English and half French, with the extended French half living out-of-town.

As for me?

I’m bilingual.

I even have a high school certificate (go Hillcrest Hawks!) and Public Service Second Language Test scores to prove it.

But despite that, until I married into a French family, I was rarely called on to use it.

So when I was, I was nervous.

Generally, I did fine.

But there are the moments that stick out:

  • While dating my future husband, my (now) nephew at age five who, after a couple of hours of serious effort on my part, informed me that it was okay if I wanted to just speak to him in English.
  • The francophone Chair of a Committee I once clerked who would circle my French grammatical errors. Both actual errors and the ones that “sounded English”. In glass half-full land? I came out of that experience with much refreshed and improved written French.
  • Getting screened out of a part-time job as a Parliamentary Tour Guide during my undergrad years because I flunked the French test. Bilingual certificate aside, if you don’t use it, you really do lose it.

While I’m now at ease speaking with my in-laws and reading to my kids in French, despite French Immersion since I was four-years-old and a concerted and consistent effort to maintain my French language skills, the nerves never completely went away.

Choosing French School
Choosing French School

And that’s why, in addition to my husband’s strong feelings about sending our children to French school, I was completely on board. I watch my husband, and other bilingual Francophones I know, switch seamlessly and seemingly effortlessly between English and French. That is a gift I want to give my children.

So like last year, I put my nerves aside and embrace another year communicating, mostly in writing via the agenda, with my daughter’s school in my second language. I suspect they are at times forgiving of, or humoured by, some of my rushed morning message errors. But they don’t circle them, which helps. And they are very welcoming and encouraging and, I believe, genuinely appreciative of the effort to support the French only environment at the school.

Because, like so many things once you become a parent, it really isn’t about you anymore. My role? It’s to support my daughter and her school’s learning environment as best I can. So that’s what I’ll do. And if my French benefits from the practice? All the better.

This is my first post here about (trying to) raise our kids to be fluently bilingual in English and French. I hope to write some more posts as to our specific experiences to date: early efforts, play groups, preschool and encouraging family to help. My children are only four and two, so we are at early stages yet and I’d love to hear from others further along in this experience.

Life Hacks, That Actually Work ~ How to Peel Potatoes Really Fast!

How to Peel Potatoes Really Fast!

So I don’t know about you, but I’m always looking for new kitchen hacks to try that will help save time. Lately I’ve been seeing this post on Facebook, on how to peel potatoes really fast.

Life Hacks, That Actually Work ~ How to Peel Potatoes Really Fast!
Potatoes in a bowl with water

If you’re anything like me, you find that task extremely annoying. I don’t know if it’s because of my vision or what, but I’d honestly go without potatoes if I could. Unfortunately,  it’s like a staple in this house hold. I won’t lie, sometimes I buy the instant and try to pass it off as mashed just because I hate peeling the potatoes so much!

Well, this Facebook sensation post claimed you can easily peel potatoes in seconds! So here we go! We’ll give it a try.

  • Step one– Grab your potatoes and give them a wash.
  • Step two– Place your pot of water on the burner and bring it to a boil.
  • Step three- Throw them in whole with the skins on! I usually let them bowl for about 5-8 minutes, just until the outsides are starting to feel a bit soft.  Now the trick is to not have them TOO soft or else this next step will be impossible! (Trust me it happened to me, the fell apart in my hands!)
  • Step four– As your potatoes are bowling, grab a big bowl and fill it with cold water. I also added a bunch of ice cubes. I placed my potatoes in a few at a time and waited about 2-3 minutes.
  • Step Five– The next step is to just pick up the potato and rub it in your hands. The skin literally just rubs off and the end result is the cleanest potatoes ever! (Maybe its just me but I usually miss a bunch of skins.)

Then just cut them up or throw them back in whole, into the boiling water again until cooked!  HOLY COW IT WORKED!

Youtube video

It’s definitely not rocket science but man, it is so easy. This is defiantly how I cook and peel my potatoes now! For me, it really took all the nuisance and hassle out of it.

Being visually impaired, and a mom in general, I love finding things that just help me do things a bit better. It may not be for you, but it’s a fun and easier way for me to get a huge pot of potatoes done a lot quicker.

Are there any other little kitchen hacks out there that you’ve tried? If so send them on my way!

Until next time,

Mom, I Want to Purchase My First Bra!

8

The excitement of purchasing your daughter’s first bra! It’s certainly a milestone for all girls and, with the right tips to buy bras for tweens, it can be a fun part of puberty.

When I was a tween there certainly weren’t too many bra choices. You had to choose between white and beige, so not much creativity back then. Nowadays you can purchase them at brand name stores and also at most girls fashion stores. They come in a variety of colours and patterns from trainer bra, sports bra, to soft cup bra. It’s an experience that your daughter is likely to remember forever, so make it a fun shopping day just daughter and mom with a lunch or dinner!

First Bra Shopping

Mom, I Want to Purchase My First Bra!
Colourful bras

When do you buy the first bra

So how do you know when your daughter actually needs to start wearing a bra? The proper age to purchase her first bra is normally between 9 and 13 years old and will depend on her own body development as some girls might have their first period at a younger age. There is also the peer pressure to purchase a bra because her friends have one. I think it’s best to go with the flow of things, and if she asks for it as a tween, then she is mentally ready to wear one.

The trainer bra

The trainer bras is made of a soft lightweight fabric with no padding and easy to pullover with no hooks and closures, so it’s ideal for breasts just starting to develop. A good indication that your daughter is ready to wear a bra is if she starts to a wear tank top or a cami under her clothes, or layers of clothing, as she is no longer comfortable showing her body. If your daughter prefers not to be fitted in a store, you can make the experience more comfortable by measuring yourself at home and ordering online.

Mom, I Want to Purchase My First Bra!
Lingerie retail store

Choose a store

When I went bra shopping with my daughter, she already knew where she wanted to go because her friends had bought a bra at that store already. I didn’t mind since it was a girl’s fashion store and knew she would be comfortable trying on a bra and talking about the ones she would like to purchase. To me that’s what was more important at the time than shopping at a specialty bra store. They carried assortments of different types of bras for tweens.

How to choose a bra

As a rule of thumb, comfort should be the most important factor in choosing a bra by making sure it’s a well fitted, not too tight or too big. As my daughter got older, we shopped at specialty bra stores where she could get fitted properly by a professional staff for her shape and size. If a first bra doesn’t fit right, then it isn’t doing its job and will be uncomfortable. Also when breasts develop they need to be supported so that they can grow into their proper shape and position, therefore getting a bra fitted professionally is best. If you imply the importance of comfort, your daughter will let you know when the bras are getting too small and time to take her to be properly fitted again.

Mom, I Want to Purchase My First Bra!

Finally, breast development is one of the first signs of puberty and that your little girl is definitely growing up! It can be a sad time for moms or even harder times for dads…. Remember that her being comfortable with the process is the most important factor. If you daughter is not comfortable purchasing her first bra in a store, you can order online instead.

Again, it’s so important to let her know that this stage of puberty is normal, to accept her changing body, and embrace becoming a young woman!

Tips and Tricks to Help Conquer Your Back-To-School Shopping List

16

Wow! Summer vacation is almost over and you know what that means: The annual back-to-school shopping trip!  It is the time of the year that parents cheer and jeer about at the same time because the kids will going to school, but us parents have to get their gang of kids together to get everything they need for the big day.  Whether this is your first back-to-school shopping trip or your hundredth, it can be a bit daunting. After a few cracks at this scavenger hunt, I have come up with a few tips and tricks that makes this yearly shopping trip a little easier for me and my caravan of kids!

Step #1 – Know What You Need
Many of the school boards where I live are thoughtful enough to provide a general list of supplies students in each grade will need for the school year they are entering.

BacktoSchoolList1

If it was not provided in your child’s report card, or your child is entering a new school, you can always check out your child’s school board’s website to see if it is posted there.

Once I have gone over this list, I then like to see if I still have some of these items around the house. We tend to buy extra, you know, just in case my child looses or runs out of these supplies during the school year. This way, you could be saving yourself some money on items you do not need.

Where clothing is concerned, I like to rummage through my child’s closet with her and so a fashion show to see what fits and what needs to go.

Model Collage

For those items that do not make the cut, I like to either donate them to places where other families can use what we no longer need. Some of these places are the Canadian Diabetes Association’s Clothesline, the Salvation Army Thrift Store, Goodwill Donation Centres and to Parenting Groups on Facebook!

Stay or Go

Step #2 – Create Your List

I love getting my daughter involved in this part of the back-to-school process, too! Since she is old enough to write, we go over what is needed based on what we have or did not have from Step #1. For tech-savvy people, you can do this in your task manger or note pad app on you smartphone or tablet so you can refer to it while you are out.

Smartphone Collage

For a low tech option, you can write this list out the old fashion way by using pen and paper and carrying the list with you this way as well.

PaperList1

Step #3 – Have a Travel Plan

Now that you know what you need to buy for your child for back-to-school, do you know where you want to go to get what you need? This is one of the times of the year when retailers are BEGGING for you to spend your hard earned dollars in their stores! They have sales, deals, coupons, both in-store and online to get you to entice you to shop there. Just about everything you would want for back-to-school will be on sale at one store or another. It just all depends on what you are looking to buy.

Based on the deals you found, or did not find, figuring out where you want to shop is the next order of business. Knowing where you want to get everything you need to buy for back-to-school before actually going out to buy these items could save you valuable time and frustration. As well, checking out the floor plan of the store is a great idea, so you can park at the closest entrances to wherever you want to shop, and you will know where everything is before going there, so you will not get lost.

FloorPlan

Step #4 – (Try to) Stick to Your List

I know this is hard to do because, well, it’s shopping, and something always catches your interest, but should keep your eye on the prize and, try to, just back-to-school shop. If you are shopping for more than what you child needs for school, then try to buy what is on your list first. That way, you have what you have gone out shopping for, and you can then go after other items you need on this trip, or those flights of fancy you see in the store. This step is really hard for me because I like looking around stores for things, especially for items like baby clothes, electronics and jewelry! If you are an online shopper, you can even skip going into the stores, and just shop from the comfort of your home! This way, you are avoiding line-ups, and everything gets delivered to your door!

Step #5 – Prepare for the Big Day

Once the back-to-school scavenger hunt is over, one way to make sure your child is all ready for the big day is to get their bag packed. If your child is old enough, you can have them pack what they need for their first day of school into their back pack. If they are too young to know what they should put into their bag, you can have them help you pack their bag. My little ones are too young for school, but they like helping with packing things, so they can give my eldest a hand with what she needs to put in her back pack.

HelpingHands
Where the new back-to-school clothes are concerned, have them pick out what they would like to wear from what you’ve bought (getting your approval, of course), and have them set them aside so they will be ready to go on the morning of the first day of school. It is just one less thing for everyone to have to think about when all of the chaos ensues on the big day.

Those are my tips and tricks for back-to-school shopping. It took me a while to get into a groove of making this whole process go a smoother, and it also takes a bit of the stress off of me for getting what my child needs every September. I hope that these steps for back-to-school shopping can be useful for you, too!

Happy hunting!

My Heart Belongs to Prince Edward Island

I’ve been to Prince Edward Island (PEI) seven times and each time I go I don’t want to leave, and this time, we almost didn’t (but more about that another time). My heart belongs to PEI. I was married in Brackley, PEI, and every time my husband and I return we meet with the woman who married us and catch up over wine and goodies. If you haven’t been to PEI here are six reasons you should book next year’s summer vacation there:

Basin Head
Basin Head Beach

1)   The Beaches: Take your pick- PEI has many great beaches. There is the infamous Cavendish Beach, which is known for its red cliffs, red sand and beautiful views, or just down the road is Brackley Beach, Stanhope Beach and Dalvay Beach – all are beautiful beaches filled with red sand and great for teaching your kids about the Arctic Red Jellyfish, crabs, various sea shells and hermit crabs. Basin Head is another great beach, known for its warm water and “singing sands,” the white sand there makes a whistling sound when you shuffle your feet through it. Basin Head was named the number one beach in Canada in 2013.

If you have a little explorer, like me, check out Argyle Shore when the tide is out (be sure to check online or on the park board upon arrival to make sure the tide is going out, otherwise the shoreline is very narrow). At Argyle Shore you will find traces of PEI’s other jellyfish – the White Moon Jellyfish as well as sea stars and crabs and plenty of shells. If it is sand dunes you are looking for be sure to visit Greenwich Beach – so picturesque, especially at sunset.

Richard's PEI
Richard’s Eatery

2)   The Food: Even if you are not a fan of seafood, PEI offers some of the Maritimes best culinary experiences. From the gourmet cuisine at the historic Dalvay-By-the Sea, to the formal dining experience at The Dunes Café, to the delicious pub fare at Peakes Quay, and the casual anytime food at The Lobster Shack (Souris, PEI) or Richard’s – there is delicious food for everyone, regardless if you are a land lubber or sea dweller!

A lot of people visit Prince Edward Island with the intention of having a lobster supper. While New Glasgow Lobster Suppers is a popular spot, as is Fisherman’s Wharf in North Rustico, we prefer St. Ann’s Lobster Suppers (available every night except Sundays). Held in a basement church, it is the island’s original lobster supper and if lobster isn’t your thing, they also serve chicken. In addition to a freshly cooked lobster and mussels and all the sides, they also serve one of the best homemade chowders on the island (I think, anyway) and their desserts are freshly baked everyday! My husband claims it is the best lemon meringue pie he has ever had (but don’t tell my mother-in-law he said that).

And if you are looking for a great lunch spot to take the kids – or an afternoon escape with the girls, you must try the PEI Preserve Company. My husband swoons over their lobster quiche, while my daughter and I thoroughly enjoy their homemade scones and preserves during afternoon tea. And afterward you can tour their Gardens of Hope and visit their two miniature horses, Jenny and Magic. They also have a Butterfly House nearby filled with butterflies from all over the world just waiting to perch on your colourful hat, shirt or jacket.

Avonlea Village
House in Avonlea Village

One of my favourite food memories in PEI is the time my husband went, at the recommendation of a local, to one of the wharfs on the south shore to buy lobsters fresh off the boat! He returned to our cottage as proud as can be and we cooked and ate them the same day they were caught. You can’t get much fresher than that!

3)   The Ice Cream: The word ice cream in PEI is synonymous with the word Cows. Cows ice cream is made right on the island and offers up some of the freshest and most flavourful ice cream you will find anywhere. In the summer months you can choose from their traditional flavours as well as PEI Blueberry and PEI Strawberry flavoured ice cream. So good. And if ice cream isn’t your thing, they also have gourmet applewood smoked cheddar cheese that will be sure to have you wanting more long after you eat the last piece!

4)   The History: For decades people from all over the world have come to PEI to learn more about literary heroine Anne of Green Gables and her beloved creator L.M. Montgomery. The books’ characters come to life on the island whether it be through the live musical, the day-long adventures with the characters from the books in Avonlea Village or at Green Gables itself. By the end of your trip you will discover that there is a little bit of Anne in all of us.

The history of the island extends far beyond Anne of Green Gables and if you love old farm houses and agriculture simply strike up a conversation with any local (try Olde Village Bakery in Rustico, PEI – for the awesome locals and the incredible carrot cake) and you’ll learn more about the island in 15 minutes then you ever will reading about it.

Covehead Harbour
Covehead Harbour Lighthouse

5)   The Lighthouses: Covehead Harbour is the most photographed lighthouse on the island, which probably has something to do with its proximity to Cavendish, one of the most frequented areas in PEI, but there are so many others. My favourite is West Point Lighthouse while my daughter loves Victoria Seaport Lighthouse. Point Prim is also great to visit as it was the first and oldest lighthouse in PEI. It’s also one of the only round brick lighthouses remaining in Canada. You will find yourself snapping your camera a lot when near the lighthouses – there is something enchanting about them. You can even stay in a lighthouse if you book early enough at Baywatch Accommodations in Brackley, PEI. You can also book accommodations in West Point Lighthouse.

6)   Arts & Crafts: Everyday we drove by this older woman selling handmade knitted hats, scarves and mittens roadside. And even though the temperatures were well over 30 degrees when we were there, her stand was always busy. In addition to these unique roadside stands, you can also buy some very unique art and crafts at The Dunes Studio Gallery & Cafe in Brackley, PEI and local pottery from Village Pottery in New London, PEI. When visiting Village Pottery don’t forget to check out the one-of-a-kind beautiful jewelry handmade by the Potter’s Daughter. Also, it’s good to know that a lot of local artist’s drawings and paintings are displayed and for sale in many of the restaurants and stores throughout the island, so if you see one you like, don’t be afraid to ask if it is for sale!

PEI
Argyle Shore

I never get bored visiting Prince Edward Island. I could go on writing about Prince Edward Island for at least 10,000 more words – I hadn’t even mentioned the potatoes yet! Every visit is a breath of fresh air and the more I go, the more I want to stay. My husband and I have made wonderful friends with people on the island and know quite a few people who have visited the island and eventually moved there – that will be us someday. My heart tells me so.

Cooking with the Kids Is So Much Fun

9

Every summer, I let my kids take over the cooking, one meal a week each. Once a week, I give them a stack of recipe books and tell them to pick anything that appeals to them. Then they write out the ingredient lists and I go shopping. Then on cooking night, I am there to help out if asked, but otherwise I am hands off and they do it all. Cooking with the Kids is so much fun!

Confession: I am kind of a control freak. So it kind of kills me when other people are cooking in my kitchen. But it is good for all of us right? I have learned over the years to say “oh well!” and smile when an egg hits the floor instead of the bowl, and “better get a cloth” and smile when the milk hits the counter instead of the mixer.

Cooking with the Kids

The kids always surprise me with the recipes they choose. It is often something that I wouldn’t normally look at twice, and can have quite exotic ingredients. They are great at tasting everything they make, and most of what they have cooked over the years has been fantastic. They are fearless, making falafel and flat bread without batting an eye.

We have learned important lessons like we don’t really like the taste of sweet orange, and you need to read the recipe early in the day in case something needs defrosting, and two main courses and a dessert is really too much food for one meal. It brings me so much joy to share my kitchen with them both and we laugh constantly. It has become one of my favourite things to do. I wish we could do it more often.

Do you cook with your kids? Do you have any tips to share? Comment below!

Curing the Summertime Blues at Calypso Theme Waterpark!

24

Does your child have the mid-summertime blues? You know, where they have done everything they could think of to have fun, and are looking for somewhere to go to get some more fun in before summer vacation is through? One option to help cure your child’s summertime blues would be to take them to Calypso Theme Waterpark!

This is my big kid.

MegOnSidewalk

She was one of these kids who were suffering from the summertime blues. Since she has NEVER been to a water park, I thought that I would surprise her by taking her to Calypso in order to change things up in her routine.  Why would I take my big kid to Calypso Theme Waterpark? Well, there is so much to do and explore! There are 35 heated state-of-the-art water slides for my child to ride! If the water slides are not her cup of tea, there are 2 themed rivers, Canada’s largest wave pool, and over 100 water games for her to try.

When we arrived at Calypso, my family was treated with a gift tote bag! It is so cute and is the perfect size for carrying around the essentials you would need for a day at Calypso. It also included some great items that we could use either at the park, or at home to remember our trip to Calypso.

 Bag Collage

As we entered Calypso Theme Waterpark, my daughter was in awe as she saw some of the slides. To get her ready for slipping and sliding down the zippy slides, we headed towards Calypso Palace. At first, she was not too sure about the waves, but I assured her that we would be safe. Besides having me at her side, I was able to see a lot of life guards on duty to help anyone that needed it at this part of the park. At Calypso, there are 600 trained staff members to help guests that need assistance, including 125 life guards and 50 trained slide attendants ready to come to the aid of visitors of the park. She went in the wave pool with our family, but was content to stay at the shallow end. I let her know that this was okay, because there was so much more to see and do at Calypso.

Calypso Palace_1

My family needed to take a break, and we found a spot by one of the many landscaped picnic areas at Calypso to dry off a bit. My daughter thought it would be a good idea to rest up near a tree for some shade and wrap herself up in her towel.

CalypsoMegRelax

Once we were a little drier, we realized that we were hungry. Since we were close to the Main Street Restaurant, we decided to stop in for a bite to eat. We tried their pizza, hot dogs, hamburgers and French fries, along with their fountain drinks to help wash down our meal.

CalypsoFood1

We also liked being able to sit down at tables that were shaded by umbrellas while we feasted! Calypso Theme Waterpark has 8 different themed restaurants for guests to eat at. Whether a quick snack is needed, or something more substantial is in order, Calypso has diners covered all over the park, so visitors are never far away from something to eat!

While the little ones were with their dad, my big kid and I headed over towards some of the amazing slides that Calypso is so famous for! We went over towards Fast Track, a series of hilly slides where you can race your friends or other guests to the bottom.

Calypso - Fast Track

I thought that she could start off on a fun-looking slide where we could race each other and have fun. She said she wanted to keep her feet close to the ground for a bit, so I gave this slide a try to show her how much fun the slide was! I was right, it was a rush! I laughed as I glided down the slide to a splashy end on my mat. Before meeting up with our family, I went on one other ride to get a feel for what the another slide was like. Adrenaline was a fast, twisting ride down the walls of the track! It was a quick ride, but it was a lot of fun, too!

I am so happy that Calypso has more than just fantastic slides to amuse their visitors! My eldest had an amazing time on the 2 themed rivers at the park. The first river we rode on was the award-winning Kongo Expedition. We lounged on flotation devices along a winding river that held animals and waterfalls around some of its bends! It was also fun to go through the tunnel that was illuminated to show off some of its inhabitants.

Kongo's Expedition

We then went on my daughter’s favourite attraction: Jungle Run. While holding on to flutter boards, we were whisked away by the current as we went under bridges and waterfalls. There were also various jungle friends calling to us as we were carried around this river. She rode this attraction a few times and had a blast!

CalypsoMegJungle2-1

Alas, we had to think about heading home. Before we left, we visited the Calypso Friend’s Boutique so my daughter could have a memento of her day at the park. What did she pick? Candy! She picked out a package of Choco Rocks because she thought they were interesting and had never eaten them before.

CalypsoMegShop1

My daughter had a great time at Calypso Theme Waterpark. She may have not gone on the slides, but Calypso was still able to keep her happy and amused on their themed rivers! I got to be a big kid for a while zipping down some of Calypso’s thrill-seeking slides and splashing about at Calypso’s Palace. Maybe my eldest will try going on a slide with me on our next visit to Calypso, so we can try out even more of what Calypso Theme Waterpark has to offer. I can’t wait for our next visit!

DK Canada Eyewitness Books – Reviews

50

Reading is such a big part of my life – I even made a goal to read 50 books this year! – and I want it to be a big part of my kids’ lives too. My husband and I read with them daily and I take the to the library almost every week. Reading is a great way to unwind, to escape, and to learn. The DK Canada Eyewitness books are great for the last one: learning. These books are FULL of info on all sorts of topics. I was recently sent three books to review and I chose ones I thought my kids would like: DINOSAUR, OCEAN, and CAT.

DK Canada Eyewitness Books – Reviews

IMG_0272 (Small)

DINOSAUR Book

DINOSAUR covers everything you need to know about dinosaurs and starts off explaining when dinosaurs roamed the Earth. It talks about how we know about dinosaurs even if no one has ever seen one, and how they lived, the different dinosaur shapes and sizes, what they ate and how they defended themselves. At the end there is a section about what we can do to learn more with concrete examples like visiting museums and going on a dig. This has spurred an interest in digging for dinosaur bones and I don’t have the heart to tell my kids that they won’t find any in the garden in the backyard.

OCEAN Book

OCEAN is a little different because the book covers not only the creatures that live in the ocean, but everything having to do with these great bodies of water. The kids really liked seeing the different zones that they recognize from the show Octonauts, and I liked the section at the back with some quick facts. Like, did you know that the biggest fish is the whale shark and it can grow up to 41/5 feet long while the smallest fish, the Marshall Islands dwarf goby, is a mere 1/4inch?

IMG_0274 (Small)
IMG_0276 (Small)

CAT Book

CAT features a beautiful tiger on the cover and includes info on the tiniest to the biggest cats, and the history of cats including their domestication. We were pleased to spot a Devon Rex in the Curious Cats section because that’s the kind of cat we have. We learned about wild cats and how to care for our little cat, the similarities and differences between the two, and how to identify different breeds.

The Eyewitness books aren’t necessarily ones you can read in one sitting, but are encyclopedic and perfect for gathering facts on interesting topics. Just check out the other titles in the series: Ancient Egypt, Ancient Greece, Crystal & Gem, Dog, Gandhi, Hurricane & Tornado, Rocks & Minerals, Titanic, Wonders of the World, World War I, and World War II.

Looking for new titles to have creativity at hand? You can find more DK Canada Eyewitness Books, like my family did, on DK Canada’s website! We also connected with them on their FacebookTwitterInstagram, and Pinterest pages!

Pay for Your Kid’s Education WITHOUT Breaking the Bank

6

Pay for Your Kid’s Education WITHOUT Breaking the Bank

When I was in grade six, I vividly remember asking my father if he had money for me to go to university, and his answer was a BIG FAT ‘no’.  Callously, at the same time, my parents reminded me on a frequent basis that if I didn’t go to university, I would be doomed to work in a fast food restaurant as a dishwasher for the rest of my life. I felt crushed and sad imagining myself slaving away, washing dishes. However, I quickly changed my attitude and started saying “how can I pay for my education?”  I decided that I would work hard to get good grades so I could get a scholarship to pay for university.

Looking back, I realize my parents gave me a gift: an incredible life skill called a big kick in the butt to work smarter. Fast forward, and now I have a university degree in engineering thanks to a scholarship.

18 years from now, accounting for inflation, your kids education could cost from $37,000 (live at home student) to $137,000 (live away student) according to a TD Bank report from 2009!  Wow!

Have you ever wondered how to motivate your kid to go to university, to encourage them to work harder and smarter to earn a scholarship to pay for education, or to empower them to save their money? I wonder about this all the time! But rather than dwelling on speculation, focusing on hope, and worrying about it constantly, I choose to lead-by-example, and at the same time have a backup plan in case I need to pay.

Pay for Your Kid’s Education WITHOUT Breaking the Bank
High School Student receiving her diploma at a high school graduation ceremony.

Here are 4 strategies to pay for your kid’s education without breaking the bank.

1) Add a Rental Suite to Your Home:

A house with a rental suite can help pay for your kid’s education!

Scott McGillivray, from the HGTV show “Income Property”, says it cost about $10k on average to add a rental suite to your home. So, given that he often overran his estimate in the episodes I saw, and based on my experience with renovations, you could say this cost was more like $20-25k.

If you are able to rent your extra suite out for $700 per month (a very realistic amount for a small bachelor suite in many cities in Canada) and you saved that rental money for ten years, even if you account for vacancies, you would have over $60,000 after you paid off your renovation cost. Live in happiness in the remaining space in your home knowing that your tenant is paying for your kid’s education.

If sacrificing space is not your cup of tea, then #2 might be for you!

2) Buy a Rental Property to Help Pay for your Kid’s Education:

Another way is to invest your money to make your money work harder.  It is possible to buy a nice investment property, like a starter home, and have the rent pay off the mortgage, property taxes and other expenses, plus more! There are places out there that can generate solid income. I’ve been investing my savings steadily into real estate to generate enough income to help pay for my kids’ education, amongst many other things. Hold that property for at least ten years and with simple mortgage pay down by a tenant, you will generate solid wealth when you sell your property for your kid’s education. For example, with a twenty percent down payment, buy a $250k home at 25 year amortization and have a tenant pay down the mortgage for ten years. Even if you don’t consider any appreciation in the property value, you will have a lovely $65,000 in equity at the end of those ten years.

3) Invest in your Tax Free Savings Account:

You might already be sitting on an empty Tax-Free Savings Account (TFSA) with significant contribution room. Start contributing to your tax fee savings account and register it as an investment account with your bank. Now you are ready to invest in stocks, bonds, mutual funds, etc. If your investments gain money in this TFSA, you are protected from the tax man!  Imagine if you bought Apple shares (NASDAQ: AAPL) 10 years ago, and you held it until now, even with a few market crashes you would have grown your money by over 2100% (that’s over 35% per year).

Granted, you can’t always pick the big money makers. But, if you haven’t ever contributed to your TFSA, as of 2014 you have $31,000 of eligible contribution. With a $31k base, you only need 7% annual return to reach your $60k goal in 10 years. That’s because this money will be protected from taxable gains, allowing you to withdraw it tax-free to pay for your kid’s education! Investing in a TFSA can be a money generator, making your money work harder and freeing up your time doing whatever it is that you really want to do.

4) Watch Your Money GROW in your RESP in Turn Key Investment Properties:

There are many investment firms that offer turnkey real estate investments with fixed returns ranging from 8% to 15% annually. You can invest your Registered Education Savings Plan (RESP) in these products. Typically there is a minimum investment of $20,000. The nice thing about these products is that they are secured by a real property asset. Now imagine getting an extra $2000-$3000 of extra income per year towards your kid’s education.

I truly believe in the saying “when there’s a will, there’s a way”.  Your will to achieve combined with your ability to take action is a powerful combination.  Become financially savvy and make your money work smarter for you so you can pay for your kid’s education without breaking the bank. Using the strategies described, you will be on your way to paying your kid’s education in no time.

Many happy returns,

What Happens When You Die Without a Will?

8

What happens if you don't have a will A 1993 survey by the Trust Companies Association of Canada found that only half of all Canadians 18 years of age and older have a valid will. This means that half of all Canadians are at risk of dying intestate or without a will. Intestate also refers to the individual who dies without a will. Some of the common reasons and misconceptions that keep people from preparing wills are as follows:

  • they feel that they are too young
  • they believe that all of their assets will go to their spouse anyway
  • they do not feel they have sufficient assets worth worrying about
  • they believe that the government will fairly distribute their assets

Which Reason is Yours?

Chances are if your reading this, you don’t have a will. Imagine if you died tomorrow, what would happen? Contrary to the belief of many people, in most cases, the entire estate does not transfer automatically to a spouse upon death, and the fact is, many people do die at a relatively early age. Very few people realize that they may be negotiating with the Public Trustee, who will be acting on behalf of their minor children, when it comes to determining what they will get from the estate of their late spouse.

Distribution of an Estate Without a Will

The legislation of many provinces makes reference to the “issue” of the deceased. Issue includes all of your descendants (i.e., children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, etc.), including those born within or outside of marriage, and those who are legally adopted. In most provinces, it also includes those children conceived, but not yet born at the time of their parent’s death. If you were not survived by a spouse or any decedents, the provincial legislation dictates how your estate would be distributed to other relatives, such as parents, siblings, nieces and nephews. Estate planners and estate lawyers recommend that everyone over the age of 18 should have a valid will. This is especially so because of the potential for adverse tax consequences. Canada does not have an inheritance tax, wealth tax, or a gift tax. It does, however, have a capital gains tax, which arises on disposition of assets. In other words, disposition is a “triggering event”. Death is also a triggering event. This is all the more reason that a will could make use of elections and planning to minimize the incidence of tax. Anyone with any assets should prepare a will because, while it is true that each provincial government has a scheme for distributing an intestacy, that scheme might be far removed from the wishes of the deceased. A person does not need to own much in the way of assets to benefit by having a will in place. For example, someone who would like to pass on “my mother’s engagement ring” or the “vase I got from Aunt Matilda” could easily use a will with good result. Furthermore, the existence of a will usually expedites the distribution of the estate, minimizing the strain on the survivors in their time of grief. Intestacies usually take far longer to settle. Also, it usually costs more to administer an intestacy and the additional legal fees in an intestacy are likely to be far more than the cost of preparing a will in the first place.

Why Make a Will?

By preparing a will, the testator or testatrix has the opportunity to control how his or her property is disposed of after death. If he or she dies intestate (i.e., without a valid will), provincial legislation dictates how his or her property will be distributed. By preparing a will, the testator or testatrix also has the opportunity to name the personal representative of his or her estate. This individual (often also referred to as the executor or executrix or trustee) will be responsible for carrying out the directions of the will. It is the responsibility of the executor or executrix to gather all of the assets of the deceased, pay any lawful debts, and then distribute the assets to the lawful beneficiaries. Presumably, the testator or testatrix will choose someone whom he or she trusts and whom he or she believes will administer the estate of the testator or testatrix in a manner that best reflects his or her wishes. If the testator or testatrix dies intestate, the province will appoint an administrator for his or her estate. While the province often appoints a family member, this may not be the person that he or she would have liked to have administering his or her final affairs.

The New Parent Escape Uncensored ~ Hotel Indigo Ottawa

8

Hotel Indigo Ottawa - Entrance

It has been a very, very long time since my husband and I went for a couples only getaway. That’s right, a no kids allowed weekend! Our schedule did not permit us to go out of town, but we really wanted to take this time alone, so we decided to just spend a night on the town and book a 1 night accommodation in Ottawa. So why would we want to stay in our own City and pay for a hotel room? It has been a while since we just went downtown to walk and shop around the Parliament Buildings and Sparks Street area, and we live 40 minutes from the downtown Ottawa, so it’s kind of like a short trip for us. It was nice not to have to go where the kids normally want to and just visit by ourselves holding hands. No set agenda, thus it was extremely relaxing and enjoyable!

I was searching for the perfect hotel that would have a deal for a romantic gateway and came across Hotel Indigo Ottawa. I have to say that I fell in love with the online photos of this boutique hotel.  Now that was definitely a unique venue for us!  They also offer a New Parent Escape package at $209 per night. Well the price was definitely right, so I booked the package!

In the package, we were getting:
  • In-room movie ($16 +tax )
  • Decadent snacks ($13 value)
  • Breakfast for 2 served in our room ( 28 value + taxes)
  • Self-Parking for one vehicle ( $21 value)
  • Late check-out (3pm) (priceless)

Hotel Indigo Ottawa- Lobby- Ottawa Mommy Club

Upon our arrival, we parked at the front of the hotel to unload our luggage. After, I went to the lobby and looked at the stylish furniture at the entrance of hotel. Nice decor! There is a lovely water fall on a wall near the reception area and they also have a business centre. Hotel Indigo offers free WiFi throughout the lobby and guest rooms, so you can spend as much time as you want staying in touch with family and friends. As I was being served by a friendly staff, I looked up, noticed the high ceiling with plenty of windows, and realized that I could see each floor and the doors to the rooms since it’s a bright open concept design. I liked the fact that I wasn’t closed in between walls, but wondered how noisy it would be at night. The staff gave my husband directions on where to park indoors and I got the cards to our room. The indoor parking, pool and fitness centre are located and shared at the Residence Inn by Marriott.

Pool and Fitness Centre

Just LOVED our room!

DSCN1835 (Medium)

The first thing I noticed were the hardwood floors. Yes, no carpet full of dust or stains. There is an area rug at the foot of the bed and a beautiful dramatic wall mural of a wheat field on the main wall. On the bed was a goody bag with the decadent snacks consisting of Angie Boom Chickapop all natural popcorn, Lindt Excellence dark chocolate bar with sea salt, and a bottle of Pink Lemonade Sparkling Beverage. All so yummy, and we also brought our own Champagne to mark this special evening! There are spotlights on the ceiling and colourful lamps. The theme was set in white, blue, and green with a very nice and refreshing modern look!

Hotel Indigo Ottawa- Guest room- Ottawa Mommy Club

My second discovery was a Keurig® Coffeemaker above the mini-fridge! I then entered the washroom and saw the shower with ceramic tiles and glass walls that could fit 2 (hum.. hum.. perfect for tonight). I told my husband this is the exact shower stall I want in our master bedroom and he agreed. I can see a renovation coming soon! There is no bathtub, but we take showers anyway, so it was not an issue for us. The cozy washrom has a granite counter top with a modern vanity and a display of Aveda® bath and hair products.

Hotel Indigo Ottawa- Washroom- Ottawa Mommy Club

Another favourite feature is no air conditioning near the windows that shouts air in your face when you are trying to sleep and is noisy. The vent is on the ceiling near the entrance of the room and you can control the coldness with a thermostat.

Hotel Indigo Ottawa- Amenities- Ottawa Mommy Club

In-room amenities
  • 42-inch flat-screen TV
  • iHome® iPad® Docking Station & Alarm Clock

Downtown Ottawa- Ottawa Mommy Club

Hotel Indigo Ottawa is centrally located just a few minutes walk from shopping courts, Parliament Buildings, and museums. After walking for a few hours Downtown looking like tourists, we decided to eat our dinner at Phi Gourmet Bistro & Bar located in the lobby of the hotel. Phi is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner and they you can even purchase on the go lunches. We went in at 8pm and had the restaurant to ourselves. How much more romantic can this evening get!  Again the decor is so modern and stylish. For Starbucks lovers, they serve their coffee!

At the waiter’s suggestion, my husband decide to try Beau’s Beer made locally in Vankleek Hill. Beau’s beers are made using the highest quality, all natural ingredients like certified organic hops & malts and local spring water. He enjoyed it very much. For our main meal, my husband ordered the Alberta AAA Sirloin Steak and was served a 10 oz Sirloin Steak with red wine sauce, rosemary roasted potatoes, and seasonal vegetables. He said his steak was just done the way he likes it, medium, and the sauce was succulent. The portion size was good for him. I opted for the Golden Dragon Stir Fry with Chicken served with yellow peppers, onions, carrots, broccoli, mushrooms, water chestnuts, honey sesame soy sauce served on rice vermicelli. Again, the meal was just tasty! It even gave me an idea for a recipe to post on the blog soon.

We headed back to our room for some well deserved special adult time….. I don’t think I need to say more!

The next morning, we ordered room service for breakfast and it was served at about 11 am (yes, nice to sleep in with no noise from the kids) and consisted of orange juices and eggs easy side up with bacon, potatoes, toasts and preserves. It was served hot and very delicious. The beds were extremely comfortable and we did not hear a sound from rooms beside and above us or in the hallway.

In conclusion, we definitely enjoyed our stay at the Hotel Indigo in Downtown Ottawa and will be looking at booking more rooms with this hotel chain. I noticed that they also offer a family package to Calypso Water Park as well as a Personal Shopper Experience with Erica Wark; a nationally recognized stylist, TV personality and fashion blogger. I would love to spend 3 hours shopping with Erica and my daughter! Do I hear a mother-daughter weekend?

Do you make the time to have a couples getaway?

Have you booked any rooms at a Hotel Indigo before?

Summer Reading Fun at Rideau Hall

If you are looking for a fun, free AND educational activity to do with your kids this Friday or Saturday, may I suggest swinging by Rideau Hall and visiting Frontier College’s Summer Reading Tent? My kids and I went recently to check it out and we all had a blast.

Busying colouring under the Reading Tent

Volunteers from Frontier College, Canada’s oldest national literacy organization, are on hand every Friday and Saturday from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.  to read and do various other fun literacy activities under the (delightful) shade of a large Reading Tent on the grounds of Rideau Hall.

As a former Frontier College volunteer, I was excited to learn about the program, launched in 2012 by their Excellencies the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, and Mrs. Sharon Johnston, and eager to bring my children to check it out.

The Reading Tent was just as I remembered my Frontier College experiences: eager, friendly, trained volunteers who are simply keen to read with kids and share their love of literacy.

My eldest – four and a half – bonded immediately with one of the volunteers, and quickly settled down to a series of books with her. Meanwhile my youngest – just under two – pulled up a chair and coloured away happily while another volunteer read to her. Every now and then she graced him with an acknowledgement or babble of excitement at one of the photos.

The former volunteer in me knows how much that’s appreciated – so I was pretty thrilled that my youngest decided to kindly acknowledge his efforts.

All around us, other volunteers were doing the same with other kids and there was a happy, creative and fun buzz in the air.

Some parents chose to read with their kids as well, while others sat at the nearby picnic tables and took a load off while their kids were happily entertained. I made a note to bring a friend next time we visit so as to have someone to catch up and relax with while my kids read.

Finally, the Reading Tent is just one of the activities you can do during your visit. While we were there, my kids also played at the nearby play structure on the grounds; wandered through the gardens; enjoyed watching the Ceremonial Guard; and were delighted by the totem pole, fountain, flowers and various others finds. We even saw a fox.

We had free, nearby street parking, easy access to water fountains, and a beautiful FREE afternoon out as a family.

I encourage you to check it out! We’ll certainly be back.

For more information, you can visit Rideau Hall’s activity’s web page; email guide@gg.ca or call 613-991-4422 or 1-866-842-4422 (toll-free).

From Tween to Teens: What a Roller Coaster Ride for Girls

During puberty, a girl’s developing body is flooded by hormones. Therefore, this will affect her mood. Your sweet 12 year old tween daughter his now starting to have tantrums like a 2 year old, be a drama queen, and self-centred, as well as focused on her friends and activities. She also wants to feel grown up and be more independent. Let me assure you that it will pass and it also gives you the opportunity to strengthen your relationship with her.

Putting you to the test

She will put you to the test, so you might have to change your parenting style and really focus on listening to her and looking for signs that she needs you (even if she says she doesn’t, at that age, she still does.). Remember how it was for you during that stage in your life, yes, I find that helps to understand her better. Unfortunately, we have all been there to some extent.

It’s also a time of self acceptance, thus not always that easy with her peers, especially when girls say harsh words, be cruel, and also bully each other. There might be lots of pressure from friends to be part of the “gang’  or be “cool” and not be a little girl anymore. She will test your parenting skills! Even if your daughter pushes you away, a sign she needs more space, stay connected and spend quality time together, just the two of you, like a shopping or spa day, movie or game night, etc..

Take interest in what she likes

Take interest into what she likes is key to a bonding mother-daughter relationship. I found the best time to talk to my daughter would be just before bedtime where there were no distractions and when she was more open to talk about her day. A good night kiss, even when they are teenagers, is still acceptable!

I always tried to find ways to give my daughter more independence and have her make choices for herself since she was a child. Yes, she made mistakes, but it built her self-esteem and made her more responsible for her actions. I have to say that this helped with her not been rebellious through puberty.

The Drama

Sometimes we also forget that a specific incident that is no big deal to us might seem like the end of the world to your daughter. She might dramatize over growing pains and menstrual cramps, so use empathy with her. She might even be a typical teenager and just say things like “you just don’t get it”! Ouch!  Unfortunately, she doesn’t get that we have been through this too. Don’t take it personally or be hurt by what she says or does.

Her hormones and emotions are a like a roller coster ride, up and down! She is trying to figure out her own identity, and has fears and insecurities. If I got into a heated argument with me daughter when she was cranky, I noticed that I was pushing her away. In life you have to learn when to win your battles, this was definitely not the time. Keep your cool, your voice calm, model self-control, and support her into becoming a young woman. Good luck!

Boo Bamboo Skin Care and Hair Products for Mom and Baby – Review

58

I’ve been using the Boo Bamboo Skin Care and Hair Products for Mom and Baby for about a week now. I wanted to give them a good trial so I could give you a solid review. And let me tell you, I love them! Boo Bamboo is a Canadian company specializing in skin and hair products made with organic bamboo extract which has high silica content. Their products fall under HAIR, BABY, SKIN, and SUN, and I was able to test out shampoo and conditioners, face cream, and some baby products.

Boo Bamboo shampoo and conditioner

I tried the Boo Bamboo shampoo and conditioner for regular hair as well as the Boo Berry shampoo and conditioner for colour-treated hair. They both left my hair soft and smooth but I preferred the Boo Berry ones simply because of the smell. They have a light fruity scent while the regular shampoo and conditioner have a woody scent. It isn’t a bad smell but I’d rather not be walking around with it on my head. I passed those along to my partner.

Boo Bamboo hair strengthening serum

The hair strengthening serum is a clear oil you apply to freshly washed wet hair and was new to me. It’s job is to make your hair shine and it worked!

Boo Bamboo anti-age face lotion

The last part of my routine is putting cream on. I used the anti-age face lotion. It had a similar smell to the shampoo and conditioner but it was lighter. The cream was a bit thicker then I’m used to but made the skin on my hands and face very smooth, and it lasted all day. That’s impressive!

Baby Boo Bamboo natural baby wash and shampoo

Boo Bamboo Baby Shampoo and body lotion

My kids, who have never been fond of baths, loved getting soaped up with all natural baby wash and shampoo and I loved smelling their little bodies after covering them in the baby lotion. They were squeeky clean, smooth, and smelled awesome. The baby wipes, which are useful for so many things, are incredibly soft and have a light scent. Perfect for little bums, hands, or faces.

I would have loved to try some of their natural sunscreens so I’ll have to order some! Boo Bamboo products are available online and are stocked in Rexall, Natural Food Pantry, and some Walmart locations across Ottawa. If you’d like to go more natural for your skin and hair products and love supporting Canadian companies, I’d recommend Boo Bamboo to you.
