DK Canada Eyewitness Books – Reviews

Reading is such a big part of my life – I even made a goal to read 50 books this year! – and I want it to be a big part of my kids’ lives too. My husband and I read with them daily and I take the to the library almost every week. Reading is a great way to unwind, to escape, and to learn. The DK Canada Eyewitness books are great for the last one: learning. These books are FULL of info on all sorts of topics. I was recently sent three books to review and I chose ones I thought my kids would like: DINOSAUR, OCEAN, and CAT.

DINOSAUR Book

DINOSAUR covers everything you need to know about dinosaurs and starts off explaining when dinosaurs roamed the Earth. It talks about how we know about dinosaurs even if no one has ever seen one, and how they lived, the different dinosaur shapes and sizes, what they ate and how they defended themselves. At the end there is a section about what we can do to learn more with concrete examples like visiting museums and going on a dig. This has spurred an interest in digging for dinosaur bones and I don’t have the heart to tell my kids that they won’t find any in the garden in the backyard.

OCEAN Book

OCEAN is a little different because the book covers not only the creatures that live in the ocean, but everything having to do with these great bodies of water. The kids really liked seeing the different zones that they recognize from the show Octonauts, and I liked the section at the back with some quick facts. Like, did you know that the biggest fish is the whale shark and it can grow up to 41/5 feet long while the smallest fish, the Marshall Islands dwarf goby, is a mere 1/4inch?

CAT Book

CAT features a beautiful tiger on the cover and includes info on the tiniest to the biggest cats, and the history of cats including their domestication. We were pleased to spot a Devon Rex in the Curious Cats section because that’s the kind of cat we have. We learned about wild cats and how to care for our little cat, the similarities and differences between the two, and how to identify different breeds.

The Eyewitness books aren’t necessarily ones you can read in one sitting, but are encyclopedic and perfect for gathering facts on interesting topics. Just check out the other titles in the series: Ancient Egypt, Ancient Greece, Crystal & Gem, Dog, Gandhi, Hurricane & Tornado, Rocks & Minerals, Titanic, Wonders of the World, World War I, and World War II.

Looking for new titles to have creativity at hand? You can find more DK Canada Eyewitness Books, like my family did, on DK Canada’s website! We also connected with them on their FacebookTwitterInstagram, and Pinterest pages!

  1. My three year old daughter is sitting on my lap now so I asked her. She said that “a lion” is her favourite. I just learned something new about her! 🙂

  2. My daughters’ favourite animals are (from my oldest to my youngest): Horses, giraffes, ‘rawrs’ (She is 2 and won’t specify which ‘rawrs’ are her favourite though she did list bears and lions and some others that were unclear…)

  3. My kids are four so they like pretty much anything and it varies by the minute. We recently went to the aquarium so fish are cool and we’re going to see “Walking with the Dinosaurs” this week so they’re popular too.

Thanks for such a great giveaway. My kids love books.

  4. My son had a love for books..he is a fast reader and we can never buy ‘too many’.. This would be a wonderful prize to win!

  5. DK books are great. I’ve always used their travel books. I have also committed to read 50 books this year. I read about 56 last year.
