Every fast-food chain has its unsung heroes. Those side dishes that don’t top the list necessarily, but without them, it’s not the same. KFC coleslaw is a prime example of this. Even though mashed potatoes and gravy pretty much epitomize the KFC experience, KFC coleslaw has become the cherry on top. I tried having KFC recently without the coleslaw and it left a void. A deep dark void that I never want to return to. All joking aside, KFC coleslaw is as iconic as even the most famous fast food side dishes.

KFC coleslaw recipe

There is something to be said for the extremely simple process of making coleslaw. It’s like magic. Very rarely can you ever create something so brilliantly blended and flavourful with that rarely achieved textural oneness that comes from the unification of crunchy and creamy ingredients. This KFC coleslaw recipe is very easy to make and a good side dish to whip up quickly if you are pressed for time; however, the list of ingredients may surprise you for such a simple-looking dish.

Balance of Flavour and Texture

The two things we love about KFC Coleslaw is the taste. Though there is a simple dichotomy of wet and crunchy ingredients, there is much more that goes into the creation of the perfect creamy blend of wet ingredients that pull the side together. These include careful measurements of mayonnaise, buttermilk, milk, lemon, and vinegar to reach the exact perfect pitch of the KFC version of the classic side dish. Part of the perfection of this dish is the refreshing coolness, so ideally, you should always try to refrigerate the coleslaw enough after making it to achieve that coldness. About two hours is best.

just wondering if there is something that can substitute for the BUTTERMILK. Not something I have on had or would use in another recipe so to purchase for small amount… would love to try though.

    • I haven’t tried it with no buttermilk, but you can easily make it at home:There are a few popular methods for substituting buttermilk. Pick which one is best for you, based on what you have on hand:

1 cup buttermilk = 1 Tablespoon white vinegar + enough milk to measure 1 cup
1 cup buttermilk = 1 Tablespoon lemon juice + enough milk to measure 1 cup
1 cup buttermilk = 1 cup plain yogurt
1 cup buttermilk = 1 and ¾ teaspoon cream of tarter + 1 cup of milk
      How to substitute Buttermilk
The simplest way to substitute buttermilk is to pour 1 Tbs. of vinegar into a 1 cup measurer and then fill the rest of the measuring cup with milk. Then gently stir the mixture and let it sit for about 5 minutes.
