Several factors can prevent proper airflow. Realizing these causes is the first step in resolving airflow issues.

  • Blocked vents and registers prevent air from entering and exit. Blockages from furniture, drapery, or household items prevent conditioned air from reaching its destination and returning, completing the cycle. This makes the system run longer, wastes energy, and creates uneven temperatures.
  • Filters collect dust and debris to help protect the system and improve Air quality. Filters become blocked over time, reducing airflow and efficiency. Missing filter replacement can allow dust to collect in the ductwork and damage system components. Maintenance of filters should be regular.
  • Ductwork Problems (Leaks, Blockages, Improper Sizing):
    • Leaks: Leaky ducts allow conditioned air to enter unconditioned areas, reducing airflow and energy efficiency. Return duct leaks allow pollutants to enter the home.Blockages: Dust, debris, and nests may collect inside ducts and block airflow, leading to unevenly distributed temperatures and additional stress on the HVAC system
    • Proper Sizing: Under or oversized ducts lead to excessive resistance on the system and ineffective airflow. Professional maintenance will ensure correct fitting.
    • Dirty coils
    • These dirty coils prevent effective heat transfer, and the system cannot condition the air properly. This can lead to increased energy consumption and potentially cause compressor failure. Poor return air vents: Inadequate return air vents create pressure imbalances, making the system less likely to circulate conditioned air. This creates ineffective airflow & poor efficiency.
  • Dirty or Faulty Blower Wheel and Motor:
    • A faulty Blower Motor restricts or stops airflow, causing inconsistent temperatures and high energy consumption.
  • Oversized/Undersized HVAC Unit:
    • The base of your HVAC system is the unit itself. Whether too small or too big, the lifespan of the system will decrease, and utility bills will likely be elevated. Professional consultation is recommended, and furnace replacement may be needed.
  • A malfunctioning thermostat will provide improper signaling to the HVAC system, which can cause irregular temperatures, poor airflow, and additional stress as the system will often be overworked. 

First Priorities: Checking Your Air Filter Regularly

  • Locating Your Air Filter – Filter location depends on the system type. These may be near a furnace or air handler, within return air vents, or in packaged systems.
  • Checking Your Air Filter:
    • Make sure to turn off the power before inspecting the filter. Inspect the filter for visually evident dirt or debris. Depending on its severity, you may need to replace it. It is generally recommended to replace your air filter at least every three months.   • Air filter replacement: Use the correct filter size and ensure proper airflow direction. Slide in the new filter and attach the access cover. The frequency of filter changes depends on the type of filter, usage, presence of pets, allergies, and air quality.
  • General recommendations
    • It is recommended that you inspect your air filters at least every 30 days and replace them every 90 days.

The Impact of Obstructed Vents

  • How Blocked or Closed Vents Affect Airflow:
    • It is a common misconception that closing a vent reduces the amount of heating or cooling airflow, thereby lowering your utility bill. The only thing that determines this is your thermostat.  Closing your vents increases strain on the HVAC system by disrupting network balance, and instead, may lead to higher output with lower efficiency. Not to mention that it can increase wear and tear on the system, leading to higher expenses through necessary repairs rather than maintenance.
  • Identifying and Resolving Vent Obstructions: Conduct a visual inspection of vents, remove obstructions (such as dust and debris), and ensure proper clearance (Including Furniture, blankets, clothing, etc.). Check for internal blockages and adjust dampers. Professional duct cleaning may be necessary for severe blockages.
