Along with exercise, appropriate diet changes, and similar steps to improve the body’s overall health, aromatherapy and the use of therapeutic essential oils can play a vital role in the treatment of acne. What essential oils are good for acne

According to Aromatherapy for Women, by Maggie Tisserand, the following oils are beneficial for use in an acne remedy:

  • lavender essential oil
  • bergamot essential oil
  • neroli essential oil
  • sandalwood essential oil
  • tea tree essential oil
  • ylang-ylang essential oil
  • ravensaran essential oil
  • lemon essential oil
  • naiouli essential oil
  • eucalyptus essential oil

Alternately, The Complete Book of Essential Oil & Aromatherapy, by Valerie Ann Worwood, recommends the following for acne skin:

For severe problem skin:

  • chamomile (Roman or German) essential oil
  • yarrow essential oil
  • myrrh essential oil
  • rose essential oil
  • palma rosa essential oil
  • carrot seed essential oil

Essential oil for more moderate acne problems:

  • bergamot essential oil
  • calendula essential oil
  • lavender essential oil
  • eucalyptus radiata essential oil
  • tea tree essential oil
  • clary-sage essential oil
  • thyme linalol essential oil
  • geranium essentail oil

Clearly, there is some amount of overlay, and these best essential oils for acne are probably a good starting point, though one person’s skin, and the cause of the acne, may respond better to one treatment, while the next person will respond to something completely different.

These homemade essential oil blends are a good place to start for acne treatment.

Essential oils for acne treatment

In 50 mL base oil, mix:

  • 2 drops cypress essential oil
  • 2 drops lemon essential oil
  • 1 drop lavender essential oil

or

  • 2 drops bergamot essential oil
  • 1 drop cypress essential oil
  • 1 drop juniper essential oil

What are the best essential oils for acne

In 3 tbsp. base carrier oil such as almond oil add these essential oils:

Daytime Essential oil blend to help with acne

  • 5 drops eucalyptus radiata essential oil
  • 5 drops clary-sage essential oil
  • 15 drops lavender essential oil
  • 5 drops thyme linalol essential oil
  • 5 drops carrot seed essential oil

Night essential oil blend to help with acne

  • 30 drops evening primrose oil essential oil
  • 20 drops carrot seed essential oil
  • 10 drops bergamot essential oil
  • 10 drops eucalyptus radiata essential oil
  • 5 drops lavender essential oil
  • 5 drops geranium essential oil

How to use essential oil blends

Any of these homemade essential oil blend recipes should be applied gently, then blotted with tissue after about five minutes, after thoroughly cleansing the face with real soap (as opposed to commercial detergent or cleansing bars) and rinsed thoroughly.

Approximately one teaspoon of the following blend, should be added to the final rinse:

  • 4 oz. apple cider vinegar
  • 20 drops lavender essential oil
  • 20 drops eucalyptus essential oil

If a thorough cleansing with soap is not needed, the following herbal water can be used on cotton wool to clean most surface dirt:

  • 6 drops bergamot essential oil
  • 4 drops lavender essential oil
  • 100 mL water

Shake well before every use.
