Essential Oil Air Freshener
There are 2 ways to create your homemade air fresheners. The first is with water and essential oils, and the second is liquid potpourri and this recipe calls for oils. Essential oils are concentrated extracts of various plants. Practitioners use them in natural and alternative health practices, such as aromatherapy and naturopathy. Almost everyone is using essential oils these days for many different reasons, such as an air freshener with essential oils. It is dangerous to swallow essential oils. Not only are essential oils extremely concentrated, but they can also irritate the sensitive cells inside the body. Those with sensitive skin should also beware of skin irritations. - Prep time: 10 minutes
- Total time: Overnight
- Makes: 2

Gel air freshener ingredients
- 1/2 tbsp coconut oil
- 1 cup of water
- 3 packets of gelatin (about 3 tsp) – I used the Knox brand for this.
- 15 drops of lemon essential oil
- 5 drops of peppermint essential oil
- Food colouring (yellow)
Equipment Needed
How to make gel air freshener
Bloom the gelatin in the water for 5 minutes before stirring. Add essential oils to the coconut oil and then stir into the gelatin. Add in food colouring if wanted. You can also leave this natural coloured as well if you prefer.
Be sure to use caution with essential oils. Some can be harmful if swallowed or abrasive on your skin. Use with caution, and it is always suggested to use good quality oils.

Let set overnight add lid once finished to disperse smell. These should last for a couple weeks, with the scent being most strong at first.

I will give this a try, only have to pick some gelatin. Do you take the lid off each night?
With the Mason Jar Frog Lid I just leave it on like that all the time. If you don’t want to use it as much, put a regular Mason jar lid.

This is clever and useful!
Can I substitute olive or vegetable oil for the coconut oil?
I would definitely not use olive oil because it has a sent. I have never tried it with vegetable oil, so hard to say. You would need to try it and see.
