  • 6 cups of dark red grape juice
  • 6 cups of apple cider or apple juice
  • ½ cup of honey
  • 2 oranges sliced plus more for garnish
  • 2 apples sliced plus more for garnish
  • 4 large fresh cinnamon sticks plus more to garnish
  • 4 green cardamom pods
  • 1 teaspoon of whole cloves
  • 1 teaspoon of whole allspice
  • 2 teaspoons of orange extract
  • 4 star anise

  • Leave the rinds on the the orange and the peels on the apple, wash the fruits, and cut them into thin slices.
  • Place all the ingredients in a large pot. Stir briefly to combine.
  • Heat over low heat. Allow it to simmer for at least 30 minutes to 3 hours, but not to boil. Avoid letting it bubble as you don’t want to boil off the alcohol.
  • After it comes to a simmer, put the heat on the lowest setting to keep warm.
  • Use a fine mesh strainer to stain, and after, remove and discard the orange and apple slices, cloves, cardamon, cinnamon sticks, star anise, cloves, and allspice. I strain, but add fruit slices, 1 star anise, and 1 cinnamon stick in the glass.
  • Ladle the mulled wine into clear glass mugs.
  • Serve warm and garnish with more orange and apples slices and cinnamon sticks.

  • Use a Cheesecloth: You can also place the oranges, cloves, cardamon, allspice, and star anise in a cheesecloth. Simply pull out the cheesecloth and strain when ready to serve.
  • Serving size: You can make 1/2 the recipe and serve to 2-4 people.
