We’re Going on a Pumpkin Hunt…

| October 25, 2013 | 4 Comments

I hate to admit it, but our family doesn’t have a lot of yearly traditions. We don’t do elf on the shelf. We don’t go apple picking. The one tradition we have started, if you can call going somewhere two years in a row a tradition, is going to a local pumpkin patch to pick out our pumpkin.

PumpkinIt is a tradition that, quite honestly, started by our inability to do anything early. That includes buying a pumpkin. Last year we reached our limit with scrapping the very bottom of the pumpkin barrel at the grocery store on Halloween afternoon. You might call us lazy and that would be fair. That is how we roll around here.

We came across Abby Hill Farm by accident. It was simply on the side of the road we take to visit family out-of-town. We were attracted by the large piles of pumpkins and the advertised free pony rides. The kid loves pony rides.

Pie pumpkins, giant pumpkins, mini-pumpkins, moon (white) pumpkins, a pinkish colour pumpkin, and mini gourds are sprawled across the property either on the ground or in bins. There are hundreds if not thousands of pumpkins piled about. The piles are taller than my six-year old and it is very hard for him to resist the urge to climb over the piles searching for the perfect pumpkin. Even Goldilocks would have a hard time finding the “just right” pumpkin at Abby Hill Farm!

Each year we buy a pumpkin for each member of our family. This year we bought four smallish pumpkins for a grand total of $8. I was able to pay using my debit card, which was great since I forgot my cash at home.

The farm also has a large variety of apples for sale as well as fresh vegetables. Want to decorate the outside of your home for fall? They  sell multi-coloured corn stalks, bales of hay,and seasonal flowers.

Abby Hill Farms is open seven days a week from 9:00 am to 6:30 pm.
