The search for childcare

The search for child care is something that every family faces. Whether it’s the decision to find home care, a daycare facility, a nanny, or to stay home with your child, a decision has to be made once maternity leave nears an end. I have found this to be particularly difficult because I find it so hard to think about leaving my little girl, even if it will be the best thing for her and for my family. Social interaction with other children is something that she really enjoys. She is happy and active and playful. It will also be good for her to learn to be separated from her parents and to know that we will always be there to pick her up at the end of the day. For me, the best way to deal with this is to inform myself as much as possible. I have called home day cares, visited facilities, and updated my preferences on the dreaded city of Ottawa’s ‘centralized waiting list’,which I have been told is completely useless. Persistence is key, say the daycare providers, so closer to my return to work date I will call my chosen facilities and use my pester power to try and secure Everley a spot. I hope the other moms and dads out there find some peace in their child care choice and know that whatever you choose, if you keep your family’s best interest in mind, you can’t go wrong! Good luck to all of you.

By: Deanne is a brand new mom to a 4 month old beautiful girl, Everley. As a graduate of Carleton’s mass communications program, she loves to document her many adventures in the hopes of sharing her struggles and joys with other moms.  She is the first in her group of friends to have a baby, so she is learning as she goes and is having a blast. When not changing diapers, she loves to spend family time with her husband Chris, their baby girl, and of course their furry baby, dog Ruby.

  1. This is true. It is really hard to decide which way to go best with regards to your child when the time has come for you to get back to work. I myself had this dilemma when i had to leave my little one already. Good thing though, we found a live in nanny who is very reliable and attentive to my son. She’s been with us for 2 years now.

thank you Kathy! yes we have had a hard time but we finally found a daycare that we think fits our family and our baby’s needs. Hopefully we will have the kind of success that you found with your son’s child care!
