Other Time of Year for Resolutions

Forget January 1. Most moms I know are making resolutions for the first day of school. It is a fitting time. The crisp backpack, the fresh lunchbox, the hope in each new notebook. It just makes sense to make changes and establish new habits.

However, it seems to me that many resolutions are not really resolutions, but things we should be doing anyway. This school year, I’m going to make just one change, inspired by a speech I heard by Fred DeLuca. Fred is the guy who started Subway, and he gave a powerful talk about the One Thing Rule. He said that transformation doesn’t require a long list of changes. Just pick one of the following: stop doing one thing, start doing one thing, do more of something, or do less of something.

My resolution for this school year is to stop doing errands after school. Sounds simple enough, but should make a big difference in stress levels for everyone. No more standing in line with cranky hungry kids while I wonder what sort of homework we have to deal with when we get home. No more racing through a story because it is already past bedtime.

This One Thing won’t be an easy change. It requires lots (more) planning and preparation on weekends, to anticipate the many needs of the kids and the household. I expect it will take some time for everyone to adapt, and I anticipate emergencies like “Mum I’m out of tampons and need them NOW”. Raising kids has always required some just-go-with-it-ness.

But thanks to Fred DeLuca, I’m going to make this one resolution to get more sanity and time on school nights. Sometimes the best inspiration for business comes from family, and sometimes the best ideas for your family comes from business.

What resolution are you making for this new school year?
