Fall is just around the corner, so if you are looking for fun and active stuff to do with your children, come and try one of Dancing Mama classes for free. Dancing Mama is the exclusive provider of the Salsa Babies programs in the Ottawa area and this fall we are offering Salsa Babies and Salsa Tots classes all over the city.

Today, I will like to feature one of our new programs: Salsa Tots.

This parent and toddler class has being designed for older babies who have outgrown the carrier in our Salsa Babies classes and are ready to dance on their own two feet! The class is full of fun, tropical songs and steps for toddlers up to 5-years. Parents get active modelling actions for their children and promoting physical activity for the whole family. Children learn dance and movement concepts while singing, playing and using their imagination in an open and safe environment.

I started teaching the Salsa Babies programs last year and that has kept me very active. This has had a significant positive impact in my second pregnancy: I feel happier and more energized and I feel like I can keep up with my toddler, who is now 3 years old. This little boy has also had a blast with the Salsa Tots classes: he loves to mimic me and other children doing animal sound and gestures, he also likes to wear the scarves we use for movement as a cape and pretend he is a super hero or throw them up in the air like parachutes. But I think his most favorite part is when we pretend to hop on the train and go around doing “Choo – Choo!”. He’s a lot into trains these days.

Aside from him being so physically active and using his imagination, he was actually learned a lot of English at these classes. Our first language at home is Spanish, but the perfect mix of English and Spanish languages in the Salsa Tots music, which is all original music develop for this program, has helped us introduce a lot of English words into his vocabulary. The same way, English-speaking children can learn basic spanish words that will help them enhance their language skills. Families that register for the Salsa Tots class receive a CD with all the class music 🙂

Introducing movement and music to our children from a very young age has many benefits for both children and parents:
  • Expectant moms and moms with young babies can keep active with our low-impact, yet lively dance class. Gentle rocking of babies, both in the womb or in baby carriers, helps create an association between movement, music and a happy Mama.
  • Parents of older children will soon find out that keeping up with their little ones in our 45 min class will get their heart rate up.
  • By fully engaging in the program along with your child and acting as a role model for them, you be creating deeper bonds between you and will be reinforcing their class experience. You will also find yourself enjoying and feeling like a kid again.
  • Our classes are a great way to meet other parents and families in your community. If you are looking for someone who has similar interests with kids of their own this is a great way to create a support network.
  • Our classes introduce both parents and children to Spanish vocabulary and music. Being introduced to another language at an early age facilitates the learning of new languages later in life.

I accompanied my daughter and grandson to something like this – twice but my grandson didn’t move a muscle, ever! Most of the other children had a great time but my grandson seemed to be overwhelmed, I don’t know if my daughter ever returned to the class or not as her 2nd baby was then born.

I’m all for dancing/exercising with the kidlets! I’m going to show this post to my daughter as she is expecting her first child in the spring! It’ll give her an idea of what’s out there in the world for moms and babes!
