Lately, there has been a lot of talk about self-care. As our lives get busier, prioritizing self-care becomes increasingly important. Many of us think of self-care as practicing yoga, a day at the spa, or even spending quality time with friends. While these are all great ways to relax, there is much more to it!

The concept of self-care is about empowering individuals, families and communities to practice healthy habits, prevent disease and cope with illness or disability to achieve optimum health. Taking better care of ourselves by utilizing the products available to us not only helps Canadians lead healthier lives, it also alleviates strain on our healthcare system! Making a commitment to practice self-care has so many benefits.

That’s why Bayer, a global health products leader, is working to educate consumers on how Better Self-care for a Better Life can make a difference in quality of life, while improving healthcare sustainability.

It’s Time to Take your Health into your Own Hands!

Here are a few of the ways I practice self-care:

  • Exercise and Healthy Eating

    • An oldie but a goodie! Taking good care of yourself always seems to start with exercise and carefully watching what you eat, and it’s true! Making daily healthy lifestyle choices and exercising at least three times a week can be such a mood booster! A good workout significantly improves my mood and gives me the surge of energy I need to tackle on the rest of the day.

  • Pain Control

    • I can’t stress enough how incredibly important pain control is. If left untreated, it can stop you from exercising, from accomplish simple daily tasks, keep you in bed instead of spending quality time outdoors with your family. For effective relief of muscles aches, strains, headaches, and any other possible body pains I might have, I use ALEVE® Back & Body Pain. One pill gives you up to 12 hours of relief, so you can get back up on your feet without having to worry about taking more pills every couple of hours. It’s helped me get back up and active more times than I could count, and for that I couldn’t be grateful!

ALEVE® Back & Body Pain

  • Pay attention to your body!

    • With life often having the tendency of being so hectic and stressful, it’s easy to ignore the symptoms our body is giving to alert us that something is wrong. Many ailments can be treated early and at home, so when your body is trying to tell you something, listen up! Monitoring these minor ailments can prevent them from becoming long-term and, if you keep up with your body, noticing an issue before it turns into a problem. Stay aware of your personal strengths and limitations! Nobody knows your body better than you do!

  • Cherish yourself for who you are!

    • Self-confidence makes an immense difference on how we perceive ourselves and on how we choose to act, but at the very core it starts by accepting who you are; faults and all. It’s your life, so make it what you will. Do the things that make you happy, and learn to focus on yourself instead of what others might think or what others are doing. At the end of the day, if you’re happy and enjoying how you make the most of out of your day,

  • Sleep!

    • Are you getting enough sleep? It’s so easy to lose track of time while you’re caught binging a TV show, or trying to get as much reading in as possible before you know you should go to bed. I know I’m personally guilty for doing this on numerous occasions, but if you aren’t getting between 7-9 hours of sleep, it may be time to reevaluate some of your habits, or to look closely into the factors that are preventing you from achieving it. Having a healthier sleep goes hand-in-hand with living a healthier lifestyle! Personally, one of the things I find works best for me is to try (as best as I can) to stick to my sleeping schedule, even on weekends.
