Stay on the Wagon, Change is About to Happen!

iStock_000019077185SmallIt’s a well known fact in the fitness industry that right around this time of year the majority of those who started a new fitness program in January are beginning to feel overwhelmed, frustrated and unmotivated to continue and therefore decide to give up and jump off the fitness bandwagon. My message to you this month is DO NOT GIVE UP! Change is about to happen and once it does you will feel great about yourself, your determination and the results!

I know that some of you may not be feeling like much change has happened yet but first think to yourself about the number of months or even years of unhealthy habits you may have fostered. Now, is it fair for you to expect that everything is going to change in just a couple of short months? Of course not! Just hang in there though, for most people it’s right around the three month mark when they start to see some positive changes. If you’ve been consistently working out 3-5 days per week for the past couple of months you should be starting to feel more energize, stronger and notice that your clothes are fitting differently.

Persistence, consistency, positive self talk, specific goal setting, willpower and being surrounded by a positive support system is absolutely necessary when starting a new fitness regime, or changing any sort of behaviour or habit in your life. If you are about to give up please just do me a favour and take a few moments to consider why you started exercising in the first place. What was it that motivated you to get started? Find the answer and use it to spark yourself back up. Next identify your obstacles and write down ways to overcome them. Then create a yearly goal plan with specific goals you want to achieve each month/quarter. List all the behaviours and habits you wish to change and focus on one of them at a time to change every couple of weeks instead of all of them at once. Surround yourself with people who will support you and encourage you to continue. Find fitness related activities that YOU enjoy doing and make fitness fun! Ask a friend to be your workout buddy or consider hiring a fitness professional to help guide you to get results faster and keep you accountable to your workouts.

Understand that change doesn’t happen overnight. Think long-term and have realistic expectations. Envision yourself achieving your goals and how that would make you feel. Now go out and keep at it!

Yours in health and wellness, Michelle
