Spring Brings New Beginnings

So  now that the lovely weather has FINALLY arrived, I’ve found myself wondering outdoors and even gardening! Well more like overhauling my backyard and finding flowers!IMG_5955 The other day, I introduced Marshall to the new park down our street.  Since all the snow is gone I figured, “hey let’s get some exercise and walk!!” Plus it helps with nap time!!”

I harnessed Marshall into his handy little monkey backpack and strapped on the parent strap, and off we went! Now this was going to go one of two ways… Either Marshall will cooperate and walk, or the more likely, be distracted and freak out when I try to walk holding his hand. It started off well. Marshall was excited to wander around outside and he even held my hand with ease. A bus drove by, and I swear it was like Marshall just won the lottery!

“MAMA A BUS A BUS A BUS! HIIIIIII BUS HIIIII BUS!!!!!!!!!!!!” I’ve never seen a happier child than Marshall when he spots a bus. We continued down the sidewalk to our little local park, and splashed in some puddles along the way. I was shocked we were the only ones there. It was such a beautiful day, you’d think more people would be taking advantage. I took advantage of the whole park, blew off some bent up energy, and enjoyed that wonderful weather.

As a blind mom, I always get a little nervous travelling to places like the park. Right now it seems to be ok because I don’t let Marshall run around, unless he’s attached to me. (He’s to little). I won’t lie though, it makes me super nervous to think soon he’ll be running around playing on the jungle gym, and I won’t be right there to hold his hand. How will I do this?  How can I keep an “eye” out for strangers?

A good friend of mine found an option for these special shoes, they have sqweekers in them. I think that may be a good option soon. I will be able to hear how far away he is and the pace as to which he is walking/running. I guess I will also just dress him in brighter colours, so I can make out a blob of him.

Only time will tell. I guess I will try not to sweat the small stuff yet. Right now I’m just enjoying holding his hand on our little walks.

Until next time,

About the Author ()

A number of years ago I went blind, and as a result found out I had Multiple Sclerosis. After my diagnosis, I attended a new high school for the visually impaired. That is where I met the love of my life, my husband Dylan. Dylan helped me get through becoming blind and find joy in life again. Shortly after graduating, we moved to Ottawa together and in December of 2011, we were married. A year later we welcomed our beautiful son Marshall to the world. In 2015, after two miscarriages we welcomed our beautiful rainbow baby Charlotte into the world. It hasn't been easy adjusting to being blind and living with M.S on a daily basis , and being a mom of two on top of everything. Life has been... lets say challenging! But oh so worth it!

I’m so glad Spring is here and we can get outside! The kids love it, too.

  2. Enjoy holding his hand, they grow up so fast. Squeaking shoes sounds like a great idea, as long as he is the only one with them.

What joy to see the world through your little one’s eyes! They don’t miss very much, do they? Happy spring!

Our last snow has now melted away and hopefully that was the end of it until next winter. I can’t wait for Spring and Summer to really arrive and not to just taunt us with the odd gorgeous day.
A friend of mine had shoe laces with little bells on them, so her little guy jingled when he walked, so that might be worth considering too.
