Fall is here! Accompanying the shorter, cooler days is the rain. My kids live for days like these! Finding a puddle to splash and muck about in is the goal of a rainy day outing with my little ones, but it is not as fun to do when their clunky rain boots weigh them down and allow water in from the top. MyMayu has created a boot that is light-weight and waterproof so playtime outdoors is more comfortable for kids.
MyMayu is a Canadian company based out of North Vancouver, British Columbia. They started MyMayu because they wanted to make a boot that their younger son could wear so he could easily keep up with his older brother while playing outside without tripping or getting slowed down by his large rubber boots. MyMayu created a boot that is light, collapsible and 100 % waterproof so kids can do what they do best: Get outside and have fun! They come in sizes for toddlers (age 1-3 years-old) and kids (age 4-8 years-old) in a variety of colours and designs.
I was asked to review a pair of these boots and liners to see just how well they stand up to a play day of rain and muddy puddles. I knew that this mission was perfect for my son to take on as he is the “Mess Master” in our family. On rainy days, he is attracted to puddles like metal is to a magnet. You can’t keep him out of them, and he comes home soaked. The rubber boots we bought him earlier this year already have holes in them, so this was a great opportunity to test how MyMayu boots could stand up to our two year-old boy.
These boots are very compact! I was expecting a larger box, but they arrived in a small box, liners and all! I unfolded the boots so I could share a better picture of them along with the liners that accompany the boots. This feature comes in handy if you want to pack them in a backpack for your child to carry to school, for trips with the family, or for in the winter when you want to store them away!
There are so many other features that are great about MyMayu boots! The knee and ankle toggles keep wetness out of the boot while keeping pants in place. This makes it more comfortable to move around without having to worry about pants riding up and chaffing the skin on your child’s legs. The sole is also very flexible. This allows for more maneuverability while wearing these boots. The 100% waterproof breathable upper layer keeps legs dry while letting air so pant legs do not become sweaty from playing outside. The Helios liners add a layer of warmth and comfort to the boots so play can be fun during the spring, summer and fall months of the year!
It was mission time for my son as we braved a rainy day at our local dog park. I wanted to see just how well these boots would stand up to the rough and tumble play my son likes to engage in.
When putting on these boots, we found that it was not the easiest boot to put on. Sitting still for our son is not one of his favourite pastimes, and we had to roll down the upper layer and make sure his foot was properly in the boot to make sure his foot was in all of the way. Once we got his feet in both boots, I tightened up the knee and ankle toggles to keep the boots in place, and away we went into the great outdoors!
Once we reached our destination, my son headed straight for the biggest, muddiest puddle in the park. At first, he nicely walked through the mucky puddle. After a few tries, he was running, and eventually jumping in the puddle! He had no trouble running around and moving in them. It was as though he was wearing shoes. What shocked me the most about his MyMayu boots was that the water was repelling off of the boots! I was really impressed when I saw this happening throughout our time outside. When it was time to go home, my little guy was not too happy with having to go home for lunch.
Here are the MyMayu boots and his jeans after our rainy day outing. The liners were bone dry (I turned them inside out so you could see this). His jeans got a bit wet below the knee toggle mark of the pants, and water seeped inside of the boot from being wet from above the top of the boot. It is sort of like wetting a piece of cloth in one place, and then the liquid traveled down the material due to gravity. If water had gotten into his boots, the whole leg would have been wet. It was awesome to see the boots did not look as though they went through the splashfest my son put them through. It took no time at all for the boots to dry, ready for another play session.
Overall, we loved MyMayu boots! They were light, comfortable and kept my son dry…well, where the boots covered his legs. The flexible bottoms of the boots also made it possible for my son to move around easier than in more conventional rain boots. My son loves them and can’t wait for the next rainy day to visit us so we can put these boots on to go puddle splashing again!
