Why I am ‘Running’ into the New Year

It’s that time of year again – people start thinking about what they can improve on in the New Year; and even before the holiday baked goods hit the table, health and fitness are usually top of mind.

As a good friend of mine coined, I have been “r-alking” (run-walking) for a couple of years now. It started by walking the 2014 Tamarack Ottawa Race Weekend 5K with a good friend. I then happily increased my pace and even ran a few other races including the 2014 South Ottawa Race Day and the 2K Family Run at Tamarack Ottawa Race Weekend this year.

The distances were short and the competitions gentle, but considering a few years ago I didn’t run at all, each completed race felt great… and I still ran those races faster than anyone sitting on their couch at home.
I have learned that I enjoy running. I think this is partly due in fact to my running companion, my (almost) 4-year-old Australian Shepherd. She loves to keep me going by biting at her leash when I try to walk. She would much rather run and I am better off because of it (best trainer ever!).

So, why am I running into the new year? Because I want to run further, faster. Why? Because life is short and 2015 showed me that in a few ways. We get one life. We don’t get this time back… so I might as well run with it while I can!

And to prove to myself that I CAN DO IT, I signed up for the 2016 Ottawa Race Weekend 10K in May. I am also proud to be a member of the #RunOttawa2016 #TeamAwesome! Who are we? Team Awesome is a group of runners, such as myself, who are taking part in the 2016 Tamarack Ottawa Race Weekend who will be sharing their personal journeys on their blog and on social media. We’ll also be cheerleading anyone and everyone who participates in the races!

So, I am running into the new year with a solid, achievable fitness goal. Run 10K. Run it well. I’ll be sharing my progress here, so I hope you’ll join me in the journey by reading the blog and my tweets. It starts with the Richmond Road Races on Saturday, January 17th. I signed up for the 5K because I CAN! And maybe, just maybe, it will inspire you  enough to join me at the Tamarack Ottawa Race Weekend May 28 to 29, 2016…. because YOU CAN too. 🙂

    All the best and lots of success with your running ambitions. I’ve done enough running in my life-time, usually after one of my 7 kids. Now I’m taking it easier and calmer too. 🙂
