#Review: Family Cookbook and The Disney Muppets Character Encyclopedia, by DK Canada and #Giveaway ~ CAN 07/14

| June 19, 2014 | 38 Comments

I don’t know any Mom who isn’t always on the search for healthy, well balanced, kid friendly recipes.  Having a 1 year old and a 3.5 year old makes the search complicated, as I am trying to find foods the 1 year old can feed herself that aren’t too fussy or messy, but yet are balanced with protein, veggies and a grain.  Its a long list.  So you can imagine that I was excited to review the Family Cookbook by DK books for some new ideas.

When the book first arrived I was excited as it was the same formatting and shape as one of my other favorite cook books, which turns out to also be a DK book , called Cook Express.  I found Cook Express at Costco years ago and have been very happy with it.

The best part about these books is that there are pictures of every recipe!  Most of us are visual and the photo can really help you engage with the recipe.  There is also a “Recipe Choosers” section which has a small photo of the meal without the recipe, so you can peruse and chose based on a visual connection to the meal.  Love that.

The Family Cookbook is very well organized, and easy to find what you are looking for.  The contents include:

– Recipe Chooser

– Babies and Toddlers

– Family Meals

– Easy Entertaining

– Food to Go

– Baking

– Cooking with Kids

For families with babies and toddlers, there are 30+ pages of easy, nutritionally well balanced recipes to tempt your little ones.   There is a 4  page spread that discusses “First Tastes” and covers a variety of purees.  This is followed by a number of pages of “First Meals”.

I would definitely recommend this book to a friend as it is packed with ideas and great photos.

The Muppets Disney Character Encyclopedia came to me by surprise.  I had replied to the post looking for a review of the cookbook and not realizing the Muppets book came with it.   This Character Encyclopedia is exactly that.  An alphabetically organized profile of all the muppets that have appeared on the famous show “The Muppets” over the years.  I really had no idea there were so many!  There are 188 pages of information on all the characters.

This is a coffee table type book.  Something that you would peruse on a Sunday afternoon in front of the TV, or maybe read while you were eating breakfast at the kitchen table.  My lifestyle is such at this point, that I don’t really have time for these kinds of books.  I am into purpose over perusing these days.  My husband however, loved it.  Being in our late 30”s and early 40’s we were kids when the Muppet show was in its prime and remember watching on TV before the Beachcombers came on CBC on Sunday nights at 7 pm.  My husband, a creative spirit with the love of animation, thoroughly enjoyed reading through this book, and learning tidbits about each character and when they appeared on the show.  It was somewhat of a walk down memory lane for him.

I would recommend this book to a reader who remembers the Muppet show from back in the day and enjoys a quick peruse here and there.   “Th- th- th- that’s all folks!”
