Oz The Great and Powerful Movie Review
The movie starts in Kansas in 1905 at a Circus. Oz, also know as Oscar, is introduced as a circus magician and a seducer to a beautiful assistant and many before her. He is a more of a fraud and a charlatan than the Great Powerful OZ. He doesn’t want to settle down and be a good man. He wants to be a great man like Houdini and Edison; a man of importance and wealth. He found himself in trouble for seducing the Circus Muscle Man girl and ends up running away from him by jumping into a hot air balloon for a quick escape as a major storm is coming to hit the Circus. He ends up being swirled into a twister, barely making it alive, and crashed in a very colourful land full of flowers and emerald cliffs.
He is greeted by the beautiful witch Theodora in the land of OZ. She asked him is name and as soon as he mentions OZ, she is overwhelmed with emotion. Finally, the prophecy will be fulfilled! A man coming from the sky bearing the name of the land will save all people. The evil witch poisoned her own father, the king, as she wanted the throne to herself. Once he kills the wicked witch by destroying her wand, for without it she will die, he will fulfill the prophecy, and be king of the land of OZ with all of its richness in gold! He can finally have it all: greatness, wealth, and beautiful women! He also met Glinda, the very beautiful good witch of the South. He has a few obstacles to overcome and characters to meet such as the flying monkey and China Doll before the plot unfolds. He will put his magical knowledge of illusion and wizardry to the test, and will eventually become a better man and wizard!
Oz The Great and Powerful is a rated PG film made by Disney. I would not recommend it to children younger than 10 years old due to scenes with scary characters such as predatory plants with sharp teeth and flying baboons, mild violence and torture. They might have a hard time sleeping at night.
This movie is a prequel to the movie the Wizard of OZ . The first 20 minutes of the film are in black and white. It was nice to find out how the Great OZ arrived in the land of Oz and what happened to Emerald city prior to Dorothy arriving in OZ. James Franco does a solid job as Oz, but my favourite characters are the adorable China doll and the incredible likable Finley the flying monkey.
This movie would have been wonderful to see in 3-D since the special effects are great, and the visuals are beautiful with vivid colours. The movie had good humour, actions and adventures. I enjoyed the storyline that really picks up towards the end with a great ending, and it was definitely plausible. I did find that you could tell many scenes were filming in front of a green screen. Overall I thoroughly enjoyed it. It was a good movie. Rating: 3.8/5
