I Ran Gan

Please meet Mom-preneur, Michelle O’Neil.  She has always been a part of the fitness community but  she started getting paid to be fit about 10 years ago when she took training to become a fitness instructor!!! After working in the industry for various types of fitness facilities (ie. corporate, non-profit, independent studios) she recently decided to go off on her own and start her own local independent fitness business in Barrhaven focusing on personal and small group training. Shortly after Ishebegan working in the fitness industry, she met her loving, supportive, and wonderful husband. They got married here in Ottawa and again in Vietnam with his family in 2008. In 2010, their beautiful son joined their family and has been keeping them busy ever since!

What is your mom-preneur business?  A local independent home-based fitness business in Barrhaven. In 2013 I’ll be creating an on-line presence by filming and selling workouts that people can download and do from the comfort of their home, hotel room or outdoors!

Why did you start your business?

To be honest I got tired of working for people who only cared about sales and not about the customers or employees. Obviously sales is what keeps a business alive but I want to create a family for my clients where we live healthy and have fun together by enjoying our surroundings, doing fun things in our community and making new friends along the way. My dream is to have my own wellness studio integrating experts in fitness and wellness under the same roof.

What parenting tips/advice can you give to moms that would like to start their own business?

Make sure you are ready! There are days when you feel great about what you are doing and others when you just aren’t sure of yourself. While you might think you are doing something great it’s hard to convince others of the same, just because you have a love of something doesn’t mean the person beside you feels the same way. Enjoy those good days when your confidence feels boosted and have a good support system, someone you can talk to on those days when you aren’t feeling so sure of yourself.

How does being a mom-preneur affect your family schedule?

Being in fitness means I have a very wacky schedule! Every day of every week is different. Having a husband that travels for work every week doesn’t help either! However, I squeeze in as much work as I can during the week so I can take off most of my weekends and spend quality time with my family. I take advantage of the time when my son is at daycare or grandma’s by being super productive. I even hired cleaners to cut my housework time in half so I have more time to focus on my business. I make sure that I am home every night before bedtime and also schedule one day a week for my son to stay home from daycare and have a ‘mommy and baby day of fun’ together!

GC BootcampWhat is your favourite activity to do with your kid(s) in Ottawa?

We enjoy taking our son to various outdoor parks and farms like Mooney’s Bay, Britannia Beach, ValleyView Farm, Saunders Farm, etc.  He’s also very social and loves visiting and playing with my friends kids.

What is the biggest challenge you encounter by being a mom and having a business?

Finding time for myself. As women we are use to putting others before ourselves so we tend to do all the other stuff first and leave taking care of ourselves behind. This is the reason why I want to build my own wellness studio designed to cater to the busy mom and her family. I believe that by scheduling the time to take care of ourselves we will be happier, healthier and more productive with the time we have with our family.

What is the best part of being a mom-preneur?

I get to all the shots! I can do what I want with my business and not have to deal with ‘office politics’. I can set my own schedule and take a day off whenever I feel like doing something fun with my family.

Thank you Michelle!
