Learning Made Fun with DK Canada
Learning can be a challenge for children, especially STEM subjects. If these subjects are put to young learners in a way that interests them, there is more of a chance that kids will want to delve more into it. DK Canada has a collection of books that focus on STEM subjects to get children to enjoy these areas of study. My family was asked if some of the books from this section of their collection would make learning more about STEM fun. We were interested in seeing how learning could be made fun with STEM.
Below are the three books I received to help my family have fun while learning:
Learning through projects
Do your kids ever ask questions about how certain things in our world work? Science is all around us, and Smithsonian STEM Lab helps readers discover how common STEM is in their daily lives.
There were so many different types of SETM projects users can find in this book to create and learn from. Many of these projects can be put together with items found around your home. The layout of the instructions allows readers to build each experiment easily. I really like that there is a time indicator and a difficulty meter to show how long and how easy it is to create these projects.
Learning through games
My kids are beginning their journey into the wonder world of math. The games waiting for young mathematicians in The Incredible Math Games Book helps kids practice math in a fun way. Rolling a dice, lifting up the tabs and moving around the counters assist readers improve a child’s skills when adding, subtracting, fractions and more!
Since my kids are beginning to discover math they loved playing the simpler games in this book such as “Up and Down” and “Times Tables Tug-Of-War.” They got to hone their addition, subtraction, and multiplication skills. These games are fun and colourful, too, so it added some fun and whimsy to what they were learning. I loved how the flaps share tips to help players to learn and have fun during the game.
Learning about pioneers
I am keen on my kids learning about some of the pioneers who have made it possible for others to achieve great things, especially in STEM. I was excited to share with my kids the story of Katherine Johnson, a famed NASA mathematician. She was one of the women the film Hidden Figures featured. DK Life: Katherine Johnson lets readers discover basic details about her life, constantly breaking barriers from elementary school through to helping NASA send astronauts on to the Moon.
My kids were fascinated to find out how young Katherine was when she finished school. We also discussed more about how people were separated and treated based on their race and gender, and this reinforced how extraordinary it was for Katherine to achieve so much in her life. Katherine’s intelligence, struggles, and achievements are encouraging my kids to believe in their dreams and to do their best to accomplish them.
Loving fun learning
My family enjoyed learning from the books we received from DK Canada. We found new projects to help us discover how STEM is in our daily lives. Playing games are helping to improve my children’s math skills. Learning about trailblazers is helping to inspire my kids to reach for the stars after reading about Katherine Johnson. All three of these books allow for STEM to become more visible and approachable in our lives. We are so happy to have them in our home.
