How Bowen Therapy Supports Cancer Patients

| September 16, 2014 | 4 Comments

Bowen Therapy, a gentle form of bodywork, is offered along with other complementary modalities by cancer clinics in the United Kingdom and Australia. As evidence of impressive results spreads around the world, the number of certified Bowenwork® practitioners in North America is increasing rapidly. Practitioners include registered massage therapists, nurses, naturopathic doctors, those with a degree in kinesiology or similar subject, and complementary health care practitioners who’ve discovered that Bowen Therapy quickly and effectively resolves their clients’ chronic pain and other health issues that have not responded to conventional treatment.

Bowen Therapy for Cancer Patients

Practitioners do not claim that Bowen Therapy cures cancer. Rather, sessions help the body deal with the side effects of cancer treatment and surgery.

Weekly Bowen Therapy sessions while undergoing radiation and chemotherapy will:

  • support the immune system and white blood cell count;
  • detox the body via the lymph system and kidneys, and reduce swelling;
  • relieve the effects of stress (muscle tension, headaches, digestive issues, adrenaline and cortisol levels);
  • improve sleep and energy;
  • address sources of chronic pain;
  • and more…

Bowen Therapy sessions prior to surgery balance the body’s systems and reduce stress. Post surgery, sessions stimulate the body’s repair mechanisms and minimize scarring. Experience has shown that surgical clients recover faster with fewer complications thanks to weekly post-op sessions.

Advantages of Bowen Therapy:

  • No needles.
  • Client is fully clothed.
  • Light, rolling moves over the skin send signals to the muscles and every part of the body through the nervous system and meridians.
  • Surgical patients do not need to lie prone (face down) on a table – the Bowen moves can be performed seated or even standing.
  • All ages from infants to the elderly can receive Bowen Therapy.

  1. Judy Cowan says:

    I have actually only started to hear things about the Bowen Therapy and it has all been good. My cousin is going through cancer treatment so I will let him know about this.

  2. Elizabeth Matthiesen says:

    I’ve not heard of this before but if it helps people to cope better with the pain that they as cancer patient often suffer then I’m all for it.

  3. Brenda A says:

    I am so pleased to hear about more holistic approaches to care being offered. The care and keeping of the body is so much more that from a doctor in a hospital. This therapy has gaining momentum and I wish it continues to spread in North America.
