Happy New Rear

WHAT THE? It seemed like everything I said after giving birth ended with a question mark. What just happened? Why am I crying? Why am I laughing? Wait a minute… why am I peeing my pants? As a pre and postnatal specialist, eventually, all new Mums ask me the same question. “Will I ever get my body back?” My response EVERY TIME is “Heck ya… but better!!!” “No Way!” you say. Listen, I have family to lie to… I promise to tell you the truth and nothing but! MOST FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS…. HOW LONG SHOULD I WAIT AFTER I GIVE BIRTH TO START EXERCISING?

Well, the fact that you are even thinking about it means you are well on your way. The medical community and midwife answer is wait until after your 6-week appointment. Listen to them; they know what they are doing. Personally and professionally when you can get you and the baby (or babies) dressed, packed, out the door and to the class AND still feel like going through with the class, then YOU ARE READY! And, yes it totally counts if your sports/ nursing bra is on backwards and worn over your clothing!

When I had my first little workout partner 22 years ago, there was one option. I put my baby in the corner (I know nobody puts… I’m sorry, I didn’t know any better!), and I SUFFERED through 60 minutes of mind numbing grapevines and Duran Duran remixes, while the baby and I took turns bawling our heads off and the BORED Olivia Newton John body double Step Instructor took turns ignoring us and shooting us daggered looks of disgust. Sooo… I became a pre- and postnatal fitness instructor. Buh Bye Olivia!

Thankfully, now there are as many exciting and varied classes as there are neon shoelaces and flamingo scrunchies! (How awesome is it that they have made a comeback!?!) So many choices, however, can make determining the best option for your team seem overwhelming. A great way to decide where to go is to find out where you are coming from. Are you new to being a Mum and exercising or are you a Pro? What did you enjoy doing before the baby arrived? What time of day would work best for your new non-schedule schedule? Are you and your baby all wrapped up in one another or is the Stroller how you roll? More questions, I know, but the COOL thing is you have all the RIGHT answers! BABY STEPS

The BEST things in life are FREE and something you already know how to do. STROLLERCISE is both those things and so much more! Strollercise fits all… something that does not always happen after you have a baby! Strollercise is whatever you need it to be. If you want to train for your third marathon, we can help you do that! Perhaps you want to sip a latte and walk with people who get that your new moisturizer is spit up and that you tried to open the front door with your automatic car starter. Strollercise is also the perfect place to assess your current fitness status and the needs of your baby. If you can walk the 40 minutes without anything feeling like it is falling out then you are ready for more! If your baby tires easily of the Stroller or prefers to be carried then perhaps a class that focuses on baby-wearing would be a great addition to your fitness routine. Strollercise is an excellent staring point for baby-wearers and Stroller rollers because all you have to do it put one booty in front of the other! IT’S A WRAP!

“I should have tried that!” is what I think every time I see a super cool FB post of some funky dance class that focuses on wearing your baby! No joke, I recently saw a new Mum in a Salsa class dancing with twins. That’s right, she had one on the front and one on the back and get this

she was actually having a great time! You can find everything from baby wearing Ballroom to Ballet! One of the best things about carrying the cutest dancing partner ever… the only feet you step on are your own! Listen, do me a solid, and let me know if you find a baby-wearing pole dancing class… I might just have to borrow a baby to try that one!

Don’t worry cross fittin’, bootcampIin’ dumbbell liftin’ Mamas! You and Arnold have choices too! Incorporating weight training with your baby is a great compromise if you want to have some alone time with your body and still be close to baby! Your little one can cheer you on as you lift, squat, curl and press your way into a leaner version of your fabulous self. Not only will you look and feel better, weight training also helps strengthen and support the body to protect it from the many new physical challenges baby brings! GO AHEAD… TAKE IT PERSONALLY… Spending all day everyday with a baby is work… but maybe not a workout! Even though I LOVE teaching my Mum and Baby fitness classes I PERSONALLY need to workout ALONE! THAT did not change once my baby was born. I ran some of my personal bests from the front door to the car when it was gym time! If leaving the baby at home is not an option, most health clubs have wonderful care options for you and your baby! Baby gets loads of cuddles from someone who hasn’t been with them all day and you get to sweat your a $$ off without having to give any cuddles at all (for at least 30 minutes anyways!).

Need encouragement to do more in your Lulu’s than grocery shop? Personal training can be the perfect answer! Bringing the gym home (literally!) can be one of the most time efficient (because who has too much time?) and comfortable (relatively speaking!) solutions. Time it right and baby can sleep while your trainer or yoga instructor provides a workout that is the perfect fit (pun intended!). And honestly, you don’t even need to put your shoes on… how cool is that? Whether you and your bebe spin your way to the Tour De France or just enjoy getting a daily dose of Vitamin D en route to your local coffee shop/liquor store/bakery… (you get the idea), you and your new workout partner are going to be great… no question about it.

Hi Cheryl, I am so jealous! I wish I lived in the country. I totally understand the challenges of taking that first step, making the first move, well the cool thing is that by commenting on this blog you did!! Congratulations on wanting to make healthy decisions for you and your family. Depending on where you live, perhaps there is a Mom group on FB where you could post that you are looking for a fitness buddy or group. If not then I would love it if you would check out my videos on my FB page fitnesswithjules. I often post workouts that you can do with me in your own home! They are now and will always be free! If you are ever in town I would love to have you as a guest at one of my classes! I wish you all the best and I look forward to hear about your success this year, Jules

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this blog post, had a laugh too. I hope that all the new mums manage to find time to fit in a bit of exercise, even if it’s only a walk in the park with the stroller that’s exercise too and fresh air is always good. 🙂
