Good Morning Sunshine!

Alarm ClockI love mornings, which is odd because growing up I hated them.  I used to be a total night owl and dreaded the sunrise.  My snooze button, ironically, worked serious overtime!! I could not speak, or force a smile, until well after a morning shower and a hot cup of tea. This is fact.

Something has switched over the years and it is now the total reverse. I am not sure when it happened. I am thinking it has something to do with the year of sleep deprivation training my first child very thoughtfully offered up. It was a long painful road, but much like riding a bike, once you’ve got it, you’ve got it.  I haven’t properly slept in over seven years, and now I love mornings.  Wonders never cease.

I am my family’s alarm clock.  My husband would sleep through an atomic bomb and my children play hard and sleep hard.  I often wake minutes before the alarm clock goes off and I enjoy these few precious quiet moments before the day begins.  I nudge my sleeping partner who grumbles, rolls over and promptly begins to snore again.  “Get up!” I chime.  “Time to start the day!!”

I love opening my curtains to greet the sky.  We have blackout curtains so even on the darkest stormiest day in December the light pours in.  I do the same in the children’s room, open the curtains and nudge them to wake up and greet the day. I ask how they slept and inquire if they had dreams.  I try to ease them into the morning.

And then there is breakfast.  The most important meal of the day – eggs, bacon toast and hot coffee – bring it on!!  Breakfast is actually good at anytime, but extra good in the morning.

I love making the children’s lunch and asking them to pack their school bags.  I love walking them to the bus stop and singing on the way.  But what I love most of all is when the school bus barrels around the corner, picks up my children, and we collectively wave good-bye and blow kisses – I to them and them in return.   They enthusiastically wave from the windows of the bus.  “Bye! Love you!!”

Ottawa-20120906-00694There is something so wonderful about hellos and goodbyes and this momentary act that we replay morning after morning has snuck into our routine and unwittingly become my favourite part of the day – for two reasons.  1.) It makes me happy to see them excited to go off to school, and 2.) They have gone off to school. Thus, freeing up some of my time and resources to put on one of the many other hats I wear.  Giddy-UP!

There was a study published in 2012 by the American Psychological Association journal, Emotion, which suggests early risers are generally happier than night owls. Not only happier but healthier too!  With this I cannot argue.

If you had told my sixteen year old self I would one day embrace every morning with open arms and optimism, I probably would have scowled and grunted an incoherent response.  Who knew?!

So tell me, are you a morning person?  Or is it to early to talk about it?

Ever enthused,

Shauna Rae

I am a morning person, I can do more within two hours of getting up than I can do in five hours later in the afternoon. I have a lot of energy as soon as I get up and can deal with everything…by late afternoon I am done.
