Go Back to School with DK Canada Books – Review

Brrriiiiiing! Yes, the first bell of the school year has rung! Parents have hunted down the school supplies their kids needed for class, but what about other items they can use at home to enhance their learning? DK Canada has a Back to School books centered on school that has some great titles kids of all ages can use to help get them through the school year!

I was asked to review some of the books in their Back to School Boutique. I chose the following books because I felt these items would be the best ones to help my kids this year.

These titles were:

Merriam-Webster Children’s Dictionary
Children’s World Atlas
• Get Ready for School: Number Memory Games (no longer available)

Merriam-Webster Children’s Dictionary

There are times that homework assignments contain words that my kids may not understand. When this happens, I direct them to a dictionary so they can find definitions to words they are unsure of. Sometimes, they are not able to understand the definitions because they are dry and may be meant for an older reader. This is why I chose the Merriam-Wester Children’s Dictionary.

Children’s World Atlas

This book easily explains the meanings of words for younger readers, and is also illustrated to reinforce the information being shared within it. I also liked how it had a guide as to how to use this book so young readers can learn about what they are finding out in a clearer manner. The pictures are vivid, so it makes learning much more fun! They really loved the pages about dinosaurs! They gave our kids so much to learn and see.

As a child, I was a bit of a book worm, and one of my favourite books to read when I was bored was an atlas. My eldest loves asking me questions about the world and is curious as to where certain countries are in comparison to Canada, along with what it would be like to live there. This is why I chose the Children’s World Atlas to review so my daughter could learn what the world is like beyond Canada’s borders.

My daughter enjoyed reading about  different countries, their geography, as well as their population and other helpful information. It answered a lot of the questions she had about the world, and it will come in handy for her studies this year!

Get Ready for School: Number Memory Games (no longer available)

My younger daughter is starting her educational journey this fall, and we wanted to help her recognize numbers and groupings of objects better. I thought Get Ready for School: Number Memory Games would be perfect for her to give her a good start in this direction.

The package comes with a book, cards to play memory games, and an instruction sheet that directs us how to use these items most effectively with our child. She enjoyed going through the book Get Ready for School: Numbers  – Fun Number Activities with Bip the Cat, Bop the Elephant and Boo the Monkey who help readers with number problems, language development and imaginative play.

For the games portion of this package there are four sets of cards, some with just number grouping of objects, others with just numbers on them, some with the number and objects on them and others with the numbers in words with objects on them. The numbers range from 1 to 10. There are various games you and your child can play.  They will learn to recognize what numbers look like, how they are spelled, and what a group of particular numbers looks like. My daughter had fun learning more about numbers and grouping of objects. She is still learning, but her memory gets better with every game we play.

Overall, we loved the books and game we received from DK Canada! They are helping our children to learn new things at home in a fun way! We will enjoy using these items for many years to come!

  2. I already had an atlas when my kids went to school unfortunately they had to have their own – a certain one – when they were studying geography at school.

  3. the link “Facebook “Like” DK Canada” doesn’t work, or at least it didn’t for me. Luckily I already like them 🙂
