Fun Back to School Learning with DK Canada

Back to school. It is the time of the year when my kids want more answers to some of the things they are learning at school. I love that they are so full of curiosity, but there are times that I am not able to supply all of the answers for them. DK Canada wants families to love learning during this time of year with help from their extensive collection of books. They asked my family if we would like to have three books to help make going back to school learning more fun, and we were excited to get learning!

Below are the three books my family received to get us going back to school this school year:

The STEAM Team, The Arts: A Visual Encyclopedia, andSmithsonian: Knowledge Encyclopedia book covers.

Teamwork with STEAM

My kids are excited about how the world works. They ask so many questions and get excited about what they are learning. The STEAM Team shares answers to the questions my young learners ask with help from the STEAM Team: five cute characters that represent the subjects of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math). They help readers understand many different concepts that are found in nature, the human body, robotics, chemistry and more with simple explanations and fun facts.

“The Solar System” section is a favourite with my kids.  They had a blast learning snippets about each of the planets in our solar system, the sun and other aspects of our universe.  The information was put across so well for young children. They are still repeating what they have learned to us and are proud about what they have learned.

Deconstructing the arts

I have always loved art. There is something about how an artist is able to convey their thoughts and feelings with a piece that amazes me. There are so many things I want to know about each piece, yet I would not be able to initially pick up on a first viewing. The Arts: A Visual Encyclopedia allows readers to find out the history, some of the meanings, and hidden messages behind a selection of the world’s most popular pieces of art.

This book is so interesting to read. Learning about the history and mysteries behind many of these pieces of art was so fascinating. I learned so much about what Hans Holbein put into his work “The Ambassadors.” I found out who the two figures were in the painting, the why this piece was commissioned, and the reasons why certain items were in this piece. I also learned about the mood of Holbein was trying to share in this piece. It was interesting because of the climate of the times these men were living in. I could read this book over and over again!

Learning, one cell at a time

There is so much to learn about the world we live in. One of the questions I am asked by my kids is why they look the way they are. Smithsonian: Knowledge Encyclopedia is a great book to turn to for a more comprehensive answer to these questions. With its simple explanations and 3D rendered images get readers excited to explore what makes our world tick.

One section of this book that helped my kids answer their questions was “Building Blocks.” We learned about what cells are, their composition, their function, different types of cells, and how new ones are created. I am a huge fan of how easy it was to learn about different topic in this book. We could understand each section and could see what we were learning at the same time. The visuals within this book are amazing! They make the text bounce off the page and come alive. We really enjoyed discovering more about our world from the pages of this book.

Learning the whole family will enjoy

Overall, my family really enjoyed the books we received from DK Canada to get ready for Back to School. We were able to understand more about parts of our world we had questions about in a fun and interesting way. The information we learned from each book was easy to take in. The visuals in each of these titles are stunning and informative. It made reading each of them so much easier. We love diving into them whenever we need to learn more about our world.

About the Author ()

My name is Lian Wright. Born in Toronto, I came to Ottawa as a student to study Political Science at Carleton University, and came away with an Honours Degree, and decided to stay. I'm a huge sports fan, have a love of reading, and like experiencing new things whenever I can. I am now a mother of three children (11, 1 and 7 months old) and am kept constantly on my toes. My blog, Pieces of Me, is my way of sharing what I have enjoyed and encountered in my life so far as a mother. So far, being a mom has had it's expected ups and downs, but that's what makes being a parent so fulfilling for me. I've loved and learned from what's happened so far, and I can't wait to see what's in store for me next. I hope you enjoy the journey with me!
