Enjoy Outdoor Living with DK Canada Books!

The sun is finally making more of appearance, making the temperatures rise. You know what this means: Time to start spending more time outdoors! Entertaining is always fun, whether it is to keep the fun going for kids or to impress family and friends with food, drinks, and a fun atmosphere. DK Canada has plenty of titles to help make your time outdoors this spring and summer a fabulous experience. They asked me to choose some books to see if they can give me some ideas on how to enjoy outdoor living this year.

These are the three books I chose to review:

Three books in a garden

Small Space Garden Ideas

Is your green thumb itching to grow a garden, yet you don’t have a yard to plant anything? Small Space Garden Ideas is the perfect book to solve this problem! It has so many fun and imaginative ideas for readers to create small but gorgeous gardens with limited space. All you need is a window and the will to grow to get started! There are step-by-step projects listed, from hanging baskets and balcony gardens to DIY planters and insect houses for readers to create and enjoy.

I love the fact that there are projects in this book that involve upcycling. It is great to be able to use items that you may have around your home to create these amazing garden space ideas. It is also fabulous that these ideas can be used in a home that does not have its own garden space. I am going to use the Kids’ Miniature Barnyard Garden project as inspiration to create a fun play space for my kids. They will be able to have an imaginative play all year-round while getting a sense of what it is like to be a farmer.

The Meat Cookbook

Another popular outdoor pastime during the warmer months in Canada is eating. Many people enjoy becoming a chef to entertain friends and family in their homes and outdoor living spaces. One of the stars of a meal could be a cut of meat. No matter what your culinary skills may be, The Meat Cookbook can help you make meat the centrepiece on your table. This title teaches readers the ins and outs of various cuts of meat, different flavour pairings to be used with each cut of meat and over 300 recipes to try at home.

We love trying different cuts of meat at home, so I loved how this book goes into detail on which cuts come from which part of an animal. It also provides cooking charts so you can learn how to properly cook different cuts of meat. The recipes, not only for these proteins but for sauces as well are simple to understand. I know we will be having a lot of friends over to celebrate the nice weather, and I am going to give the Dry-Rubbed Steak with Chimichurri Sauce recipe a try. The directions are straight-forward and we like to have a bit of a spicy kick with our meals.

Mocktails, Punches & Shrubs

From greeting your guests to sitting back and enjoying the day, a fun drink is always great to have on hand. It also goes well with a delicious dish. But here’s the question: Do all drinks have to have alcohol to be considered fun? NO WAY! Mocktails, Punches & Shrubs shares over 80 non-alcoholic beverages for readers to whip up, sip and savour. Drink recipes range from herbal infusions and different tea combinations to smoothies and shrubs (or tasting vinegars) to tickle your taste buds.

It is great that there is an Essential Ingredients section so you can see what you would need to have on hand to put together these yummy concoctions. I also like that there is a bit of a blurb accompanying each recipe as to the benefits of each drink. I can’t wait to mix up a round of Star Fruit Fizz with Agave drinks. It is sweet and light drink my friends and I would love drinking on our deck while passing away an afternoon of catching up on ‘Girl Talk.’

About the Author ()

My name is Lian Wright. Born in Toronto, I came to Ottawa as a student to study Political Science at Carleton University, and came away with an Honours Degree, and decided to stay. I'm a huge sports fan, have a love of reading, and like experiencing new things whenever I can. I am now a mother of three children (11, 1 and 7 months old) and am kept constantly on my toes. My blog, Pieces of Me, is my way of sharing what I have enjoyed and encountered in my life so far as a mother. So far, being a mom has had it's expected ups and downs, but that's what makes being a parent so fulfilling for me. I've loved and learned from what's happened so far, and I can't wait to see what's in store for me next. I hope you enjoy the journey with me!
