I was thrilled to have the opportunity to try out the new Eating Well Ottawa service, launched in early November. Eating Well Ottawa is run by Brendan Gorman and provides a box of organic and as-local-as-possible produce, delivered to your door. There are options for families and businesses of different sizes. For families, the Harvest Box will feed approximately one or two people for one week; the Family Harvest Box will feed three to four people for one week and the Large Harvest Box will feed five or six people for one week. Prices range from $30 to $55, which seems reasonable considering the box is delivered to your door and everything you receive is organic.

I was generously provided a Large Harvest Box to try out. That is quite a supply of fresh produce for my daughter and I. Thankfully, my vegetarian boyfriend and I will get together for dinner a few times during the week, which will help use up some of the supply. Needless to say, we were pretty excited to see all the wonderful fruits and vegetables. You can see on their website what goodies they will deliver each week and you can ask them to provide a substitution if you do not like a certain vegetable, or have allergies. For instance, my box would have contained pomegranate, but I preferred not to have that, so I received a couple of oranges instead. Along with the oranges, my box also contained: a bunch of bananas; apples; approximately eight kiwi; spinach; iceberg lettuce; beets; garlic; a small bag of sweet potatoes; tomatoes; carrots; pears; zucchini; grapefruit and a green pepper. It came in a reusable, green bin (shown in the photo) and everything was organic. Some of the produce was from Ontario and Quebec which is pretty great.

The produce was very fresh and the service provided by Brendan was wonderful. He was very accommodating and conscientious to my needs, for instance when I said I did not want pomegranate, or when he realized he was not going to have enough turnip or leeks, he substituted my box with the sweet potato and garlic.

I generally will buy a couple of organic items, such as carrots and apples, during each shopping trip. I know that produce with a thick peel has that natural barrier to chemicals, so I do not think to buy organic oranges and bananas, for example. However, all of the produce I received through Eating Well Ottawa, in particular, the tomatoes and oranges, were exceptionally fresh and flavourful. Receiving the bin of fresh produce has made me really excited about cooking creatively in a way that is healthy and jam-packed with whole foods. I imagine that if I ordered this every week, or even every other week, I’d feel very inspired to try new recipes for my daughter and I, just to make sure I used all of the produce.

If you tend to buy organic produce, I highly recommend checking out

Disclosure:  I received the above mentioned products to sample.  All opinions are honest and my own.

I’ve had my eye on “Eating Well” well for awhile now! I buy all organic, and sometimes the different stores and trips to get them all just doesn’t make sense. Great review- even better that there’s a giveaway!
