Beat the Summer Heat!

The City of Ottawa issues heat alerts when the Humidex is forecast to be 36 C or more and heat warnings when the Humidex is forecast to be 40 C or more for at least two consecutive days.

Remember to protect yourself and help others

  • drink plenty of water
  • avoid heavy outdoor activity
  • wear a hat, light and loose clothing, sunscreen and sunglasses when going outside
  • spend at least two hours in an air-conditioned room
  • talk with your doctor, nurse or pharmacist if you are taking medications, some medicines make it harder for your body to control its temperature
  • stay connected with people in your community who have a difficult time coping with hot weather and those who live alone, check on them regularly

Try these cool suggestions to beat the heat this summer!

Go swimming

Enjoy one of the City of Ottawa wading pools, splash pads, or beaches.
When a Heat Alert or Warning is in effect, your local City of Ottawa pool will convert all lane swims to leisure swims.

Ottawa Public Libraries

Why not read a good book or magazine in the air-conditioned comfort of our 33 Ottawa Public Library branches? Call InfoService for branch locations and hours of operation at 613-580-2940.

Movie Theatres

When a heat warning is in effect, why not head out to a movie theatre with the family.

  1. Mayfair
  2. Cineplex
  3. Empire
  4. Ciné-Starz Orléans
  5. Rainbows
  6. Bytown Cinema

Why not visit a museum in the Ottawa/Outaouais region!

Fan facts

  • use your fan in or next to a window, box fans are best
  • use a fan to bring in the cooler air from outside
  • use your fan by plugging it directly into the wall outlet
  • if you need an extension cord, it should be CSA (Canadian Standards Association) approved

  • don’t use a fan in a closed room without windows or doors open to the outside
  • don’t believe that fans cool air. They don’t. They just move the air around. Fans keep you cool by evaporating your sweat.
  • don’t use a fan to blow extremely hot air on yourself. This can cause heat exhaustion to happen faster
