3 Toys to Gift That Bring Wonder to Kids

Some of the best toys bring about a sense of wonder. They allow kids to imagine and be brought into a new world of fun. Now that the holiday season is upon us, parents and loved ones are on the hunt, are you looking for toys that will excite their imaginations? My family  was asked to try out these toys to see if they could evoke a sense of wonder in my kids.

Below are the toys my family received:

Scouting out a bit of fun

When the holiday season comes around, my kids and I love the build-up to the big day on the 25thof December after the Santa has visited. I was REALLY excited to receive an array of Elf on the Shelf® products to try! I have always thought it would be funny to see my kids look around for a friend to the Man in Red every day and see what he does to entertain them.

Elf on the Shelf® Scout Elf with a book.

For my family, I was not a big fan of the aspect of an object keep my kids’ behaviour in check during the holiday season. I want them to be able to do this for themselves throughout the whole year. The surprise aspect behind a Scout Elf is a big reason why I like this toy. I also love the idea of kids getting into the spirit of the season by trying to find their elf friend and their relationship with Santa.

My kids were over the moon when they first met their Scout Elf. He introduced himself by leaving a note for them and to begin looking for him. Once our elf was found, we read the book that accompanies every Scout Elf so they understand who he is and why he was there.

Both kids had so many questions about their new friend. He brought a new sense of wonder about the holiday season into our home. They named their friend Little Red and adopted him, so he could be a part of our family. Each morning when they do not want to get out of bed to get ready for school, the mention of finding the elf springs them out of their fog and racing downstairs to start hunting.

Accessories always add a bit of fun

To make things fresher for kids when their Scout Elf visits during the holiday season, Elf on the Shelf® Claus Couture Collection Clothing is a great addition to this family tradition. We received three accessory packs to increase the fun to our family’s Elf experience.

Since the weather is turning colder, the Ho! Ho! Ho! Hawaiian Shirt set was perfect to take away a bit of the chill they were feeling. The floral shirt, sunglasses and lay are the perfect touch to warm kids up at this time of the year.

My kids giggled all day when our elf wore the Snowy Sugar-Plum Duo set. The blue tulle skirt, little ballet slippers, and mini nutcracker, this set was simply genius! Finding Little Red in this outfit really made their day. They could not stop talking about it.

The Totally Tubular Snow set was a great surprise. Little Red made his appearance with this set on a day when we received a huge snow fall, and they thought he was so awesome! They were happy he was having fun while sitting at his post.

A furry friend that can stay all year-round

There are two big drawbacks of Elf on the Shelf® that my kids have found. The first one is that they cannot touch their Scout Elf. The other one is that their friend leaves on the night Santa visits. Queue the brilliance of Elf Pets®! These furry friends bring the wonder of the holiday season to a whole new level.

We received a Saint Bernard pup set to accompany our Elf Scout. The magic of these playful pups is that they help to collect Christmas cheer. This energy gets released on Christmas Eve to help Santa power his sleigh. We love that our dog can stay all year long, and we can touch it!

We adopted our Saint Bernard and quickly named him Ace. Both of my kids take turns caring for their puppy friend and cuddling with him at night. My son is especially close to our pup.  He is really taken to trying to give Santa all of the cheer he needs to make it through his chilly ride.

The wonder of science explored

My kids are at an age where they have so many questions about how the world works. Science helps to explain why things happen. Professor Maxwell’s 4D Chef Augmented Reality Chemistry Kit helps children see science at work first-hand.

Professor Maxwell’s 4D Chemistry Augmented Reality Kit.

What is the difference between this kit and other science kits? It also includes a pair of Augmented Reality (AR) goggles. They bring Professor Maxwell into your home to help go through each of the experiments to learn more about how the world works.

We downloaded the Professor Maxwell’s 4D AR Science app (available for Android and iOS users) to use it with the 4D AR goggles. With the goggles ready, my kids could not wait to look at the experiments found within the book.

With the goggles down, my kids chose to do the “Oil and Water” experiment. My daughter saw Professor Maxwell popped up to go over the experiment we chose. He went through each step as we moved the goggles over the book. The instructions were easy to follow. They liked how they could see how oil and water did not blend together with the help of the food colouring.

4D Chemistry Kit Oil and Water Experiment steps.

They learned that this happens because oil molecules do not have a charge while water molecules have a positive and negative charge. Oil molecules fight to get away from water molecules when they are mixed together. This is a fun set for kids to find chemistry in their everyday life. They could not wait to try out all of the experiments.

Whisking up wonder in the kitchen

My daughter is slowly becoming a little chef around our home. She is always asking how she can help out with meals and desserts when we are in the kitchen. Professor Maxwell’s 4D Augmented Reality Chef Kit helps children learn about the science that happens in the kitchen. It includes a boxful of tools any mini sous chef would need to get cooking. The book contains eighteen recipes for kids to try creating yummy dishes and to learn the science in cooking.

My girl is a chocoholic. Naturally, she gravitated to making the brownie recipe with Professor Maxwell. She did not want to wear the goggles because, for her, the goggles were not comfortable to wear with the chef hat.

From start to finish, the instructions were simple to understand. The photos for every step helped my mini chef see how to mix everything together. I really liked how some of the steps let kids know a grown-up should give them a hand. My girl also learned how chocolate is made from cocoa bean to yummy treat.

4D Chefs Kit Brownies recipe steps.

It took less than an hour for her brownies to bake. They did not turn out like the ones featured in the book, but they were still yummy! We added a frosting for more choco fun. The best part of this experience is that my daughter felt new sense of confidence. She was so proud of what she was capable of baking.

My name is Lian Wright. Born in Toronto, I came to Ottawa as a student to study Political Science at Carleton University, and came away with an Honours Degree, and decided to stay. I'm a huge sports fan, have a love of reading, and like experiencing new things whenever I can. I am now a mother of three children (11, 1 and 7 months old) and am kept constantly on my toes. My blog, Pieces of Me, is my way of sharing what I have enjoyed and encountered in my life so far as a mother. So far, being a mom has had it's expected ups and downs, but that's what makes being a parent so fulfilling for me. I've loved and learned from what's happened so far, and I can't wait to see what's in store for me next. I hope you enjoy the journey with me!
