Traveling with kids doesn’t have to be stressful. Seriously! Now, listening to 3 kids wine and complain for 4 days….. THAT can be stressful but I’d have that at home anyways.
I decided earlier this year that it would be a good idea to travel to Niagara Falls with my husband, our 3 kids (2 in diapers!), and my mother who’s in a wheelchair. I also decided that driving down in our van was the way to go…. cause we’re on a budget an all. I think this was right after a few screws came loose in my brain, but after 3 kids we’ll never know for sure.
One argument I was determined not to have with my kids is the ‘I’m Hungry’ wine-a-thon that starts about 1o minutes after you leave the hotel (or home, if you’re doing the staycation thing).
Each kid has 4 large Ziploc bags (one for each day we’ll be gone) – Each ziplock has the snacks they will be allowed to eat in any given day, 1 juice, raisins, dried cherries, cereal bar, granola bar, handful of cheerios. They each have a mini lunch to which each morning I will add the contends of that day’s Ziploc along with some cheese and an apple. Voila! Daily snacks are taken care of.
They’ll have their snack boxes in the stroller and can eat whatever they want from it, whenever they want. The only other food they get while we’re out is lunch and dinner. Run out of snacks before day’s end? Too bad so sad! Thirsty? Drink water.
This takes care of 2 things: I’ve now empowered them to make their own choices within the limits of their snack boxes AND I’ve saved a ton-load of money cause we all know concession stands and gift boutique fare will throw us over the budget edge.
