The Starlight Children’s Foundation Canada Introduces Hiya Into Their Collection! #Giveaway#HolidayGiftGuide CAN 12/16

| November 26, 2014 | 37 Comments

For the past six years, Starlight Foundation ™ Canada have collaborated with Toys “R” Us to release a Limited Edition Starlight Bear in order to raise funds for the Starlight Foundation Canada. This year’s addition to this collection is Hiya, named and designed by brothers Matteo and Nicco who are both seriously ill children that this charity support. A portion of the sales from Hiya will go towards Starlight’s in and out-of-hospital programs that help to bring more joy to lives of these children.

HiyaOurs-A

Starlight Children’s Foundation™Canada is part of Starlight’s global network, helping kids and families through partnerships with more than 130 healthcare facilities. For over 30 years, Starlight has become a leading global charity that partners with experts to improve the life and health of kids and families around the world. Working with innovators in pediatric healthcare, entertainment and technology, Starlight provides a unique blend of family-centered programs and services for children that need care both while they are at the hospital and at home. Starlight partners with more than 1,750 healthcare facilities and pediatric hospitals in Australia, Canada, Israel, New Zealand, the United Kingdom and the United States, serving millions of children every year.

As I previously stated, Matteo (5) and Nicco (3) were given the honour of designing this year’s Starlight Bear. Both boys have been diagnosed with cancer. Matteo has Rhabomyosarcoma (a form of bladder cancer) resulting in Matteo having to have his bladder and prostate removed. His little brother Nicco was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia, and has his big brother, Matteo with him while he goes through chemotherapy.

Where did Matteo and Nicco come up with the name Hiya for this year’s Starlight Bear? “Hiya” is a term that their grandmother uses meaning “sleepy sleepy.” The boys also have a double-sided blanky with the same name. When designing this year’s Starlight Bear, the boys wanted the bear to feel just like their blanky, so Hiya’s fur was make to just like it. Matteo and Nicco added a gold and purple ribbon on the bear’s foot to promote awareness for childhood cancer.

The Starlight Foundation™ Canada was generous enough to send my family a bear from this year’s edition of the Starlight Bear. My children’s eyes lit up with glee as I introduced them to Hiya. My younger daughter took to Hiya right away, cuddling and snuggling it on our couch. Since she thought it was tired, she then put Hiya down for a bit of a snooze. My son also loves Hiya. He loves Hiya’s soft fur and he is happy to have Hiya as a part of our family. I loved all of small little touches that Matteo and Nicco put into designing Hiya to make this bear so cuddly and welcoming.

Through the support of employees and customers, Toys “R” Us Canada has raised over $12 million for Starlight in the past 15 years.

Hiya, this year’s Limited Edition Collectable Starlight Bear, will be available at Toys “R” Us and Babies “R” Us stores across Canada and online for $14.99.

This bear is a great idea this holiday season for any child to receive. By giving Hiya to a child, you will also be giving to children in need that are supported by Starlight Foundation Canada!

My name is Lian Wright. Born in Toronto, I came to Ottawa as a student to study Political Science at Carleton University, and came away with an Honours Degree, and decided to stay. I'm a huge sports fan, have a love of reading, and like experiencing new things whenever I can. I am now a mother of three children (11, 1 and 7 months old) and am kept constantly on my toes. My blog, Pieces of Me, is my way of sharing what I have enjoyed and encountered in my life so far as a mother. So far, being a mom has had it's expected ups and downs, but that's what makes being a parent so fulfilling for me. I've loved and learned from what's happened so far, and I can't wait to see what's in store for me next. I hope you enjoy the journey with me! Author's website.

Great Escape events! These are wonderfully enriching experiences for kids who spend so much time in the hospital. A fun day, just for them and their families. My family has attended several in the past, wagon rides, Christmas and Halloween parties, movie premieres, summer picnics, etc. this is a very special bear, as we have met the little boys who designed it at Starlight and Candlelighter events (my eldest daughter also has cancer–remission) and they and their family are truly a testament to how a family just pulls together, finds joys in what they can, appreciates one another and learns to deal with this new normal. Inspiring!
