Go find your leg warmers, your scratch n’ sniff stickers, your Rubik’s Cube, and then hop into your Delorean! The first season of the 80s sitcom, The Goldbergs: is now on DVD, and you will be laughing as you travel back in time!
The Goldbergs is about Adam Goldberg (Sean Giambrone), an 11 year-old kid growing up in the 80s, and how he documented his life and his family with his video camera during this fun and brightly coloured decade in Philadelphia, PA. You get to watch as Adam deals with his extremely protective mom, Bev (Wendi McLendon-Covey), his irritable dad, Murray (Jeff Garlin), his unruly older sister, Erica (Hayley Orrantia), his emotionally tense older brother, Barry (Troy Gentile), and his super cool grandfather, “Pops” Solomon (George Segal).
There were also some special features along with all 23 of the first seasons of The Goldbergs:
In this first season of The Goldbergs, Adam and his family deal with family issues such as seeing your kids more like adults and less as children, dating, and bonding with each other in their own special way. The Goldberg family also deal with befriending their “normal” neighbours, bullies, break-ups and various other situations.
There are also some Special Features that accompany these 23 episodes of the first season of The Goldbergs. They are:
• Blast From The Past: Making Season One
• Our House: The ‘80s Revisited
• On Set with Jeff Garlin
• Patton Oswalt: Adam Grows Up
• Costumes of the ‘80s: The Good, The Bad and the Ugly
I like how the production team made the case so that all three DVDs are able to be stacked on one side so everything is able to be held in one smaller DVD case. Since we are running out of space on our DVD shelf, it makes it easier to store the case there.
Since my eldest is always interested in the decade I grew up in as a child, I thought that I would watch The Goldbergs with her so she could get a glimpse of what this time period was like. We had a little screening party after the younger kids were in bed with snacks.
Even though this series is about a family in the ‘80s, this is not a series that the whole family can enjoy. There is some violence (siblings fighting) and some language that may not be suitable for younger viewers to see and hear.
The Goldbergs really brought me back to my earlier childhood as I watched and saw the Goldbergs’ home, the clothing, the hairstyles and other paraphernalia from the ‘80s scattered throughout each of the episodes. I had to explain what some of these items were to my eldest as she did not know what they were. It was great to see her reaction when she heard that people sent letters to each other or that there were answering machines to record messages instead of email and a button to press for these items.
Our favourite character out of the main cast has to be Bev Goldberg. She is loud, overbearing and over the top, but she is an amazing mother who just always wants the best for her kids. Bev is also relentless, and there was no such thing as “barriers” between her and her kids. Bev Goldberg is the crazy mother you will fall in love with the moment you start watching this series!
We also loved watching all of these special features. Since I love fashion, my favourite special feature had to be “Costumes of the ‘80s: The Good, The Bad and the Ugly.” It was amazing to see all of the fun pieces each of the characters wear, and the stories behind some articles of clothing. Some of these clothes were actually owned by the real Goldbergs in the ‘80s!
I also liked how snippets of Adam Goldberg’s actual videos and family photos are used at the end of the episodes so you can see the comparison between Adam’s interpretations of what life was like versus what it really was really like back in the ‘80s.
Overall, The Goldbergs is a great series to watch. It is funny, witty, and I love how situations are resolved the “Goldberg” way. Even though younger viewers may not be able to watch this series, the older members of the family will enjoy each episode.
