Staycation Fun with #DKMarchBreak and Books Giveaway ~ CAN 05/10

| April 13, 2015 | 36 Comments

This March Break, we decided to stay at home and soak up what the nation’s capital had to offer. There were days that we wanted to spend at home as a family in our “home resort” so we had to think of ways to keep two young children and one teenager entertained. We were happy to have books from DK Canada to help keep our kids away from the television for a while to spend some quality time together.

My family loves dinosaurs. They know several different types of dinosaurs, their characteristics and whether they are carnivores, herbivores or omnivores. This is why I thought they would love to go through The Amazing Dinosaur Quiz Book

This book has over 1000 questions to test minds of dinosaur lovers of all ages and skill levels. There are three levels of difficulty within this book: Easy, Medium and Hard. They are colour coded in each section of this book, so they are easy to find. There are also a section of Fast Fasts to enhance your dino knowledge, and the Answer Section was laid out well so it was easy to find the correct answer to all of the questions we looked at.

Feeding out minds with knowledge made our. I was so happy to have our children’s cookbook, Mommy & Me Bake, to find something fun to bake together.

My kids are cookie monsters, so we decided to try this book’s recipe for Crunchy Cookies. I love how this book not only provides a recipe for many favourite baked goods, but they also educate readers of this book on the tools needed to create these sweet treats. The instructions are very easy to follow as well. My younger daughter has a blast helping me in the kitchen putting these cookies together. My kids could not wait to start munching on these fun-shaped cookies. The next day, I thought it would be fun to dress up cookies by trying the icing recipe in this book. With a no more than three ingredients and a few flicks of my wrist, the icing was ready to be used. I also added some other little things to make our cookies really special!

There were also some days during our staycation when we did not want to make an elaborate dinner because we were exhausted from having fun with our kids around our neighbourhood. I was lucky to have The No Time to Cook! Book

This book has so many simple recipes that can be put together in 20 minutes of less so we put it to the test when trying to find a dish to complement chicken fingers for the kids. This book is divided into easy recipes for breakfast, lunch, dinner, dessert and an appetizer section so there is something for every time of the day. I found a recipe for Pea and Pancetta Pasta. Since my other half does not like eating meat too often, I made a few changes to this recipe so he could enjoy it as well. I also used Capellini pasta because we did not have the shell noodles because we did not have any shell noodles on hand. This recipe really was simple and easy to put together. By the time the chicken fingers were ready for our kids, this pasta dish was complete. We all really enjoyed our meal, and we were glad that we did not have to put much effort into this meal.

Our staycation was certainly made better with these books from DK Canada. My kids were able to have fun while they learn more about subjects and activities they already enjoy. We also have so many new recipes to try when we want to put a quick meal together. They were all easy to find the information we needed and they were filled with gorgeous photos. These books would do to help keep your family entertained no matter what time of the year you decided to stay at home for some rest and relaxation.

I'm a huge sports fan, have a love of reading, and like experiencing new things whenever I can. I am now a mother of three children (11, 1 and 7 months old) and am kept constantly on my toes. My blog, Pieces of Me, is my way of sharing what I have enjoyed and encountered in my life so far as a mother. So far, being a mom has had it's expected ups and downs, but that's what makes being a parent so fulfilling for me. I've loved and learned from what's happened so far, and I can't wait to see what's in store for me next. I hope you enjoy the journey with me!
