Purchasing a Family Vehicle ~ Car, Minivan, SUV, CUV?

Does time ever fly by when you have kids! We purchased a new 2005 silver Dodge Grand Caravan in May 2006 in order to have more room to put all of the kid’s hockey and soccer gear when going to out of town trips. It will already be 8 years soon! The best part of owing a Grand Caravan is that we can, all 4 of us, still sit in the van while having our luggage and sports equipment in the back. We could never do this with our previous mid-size car. Yes, that was one of the main reasons we got the van, but it has even been so useful to be able to have enough space to:

  • load a sofa, chairs, moving boxes, 2 TV, computers
  • store bags upon bags of groceries, luggage, strollers, toys
  • put 2 x 4, 2 x 6, or 2 x 8 of lumber
  • accommodate 7 people sitting comfortably
  • and more!

At first, we weren’t even looking at purchasing our first minivan when we went vehicle shopping. It looked so big and huge to drive and park! We looked at SUV’s and noticed the trunk was not much bigger than the one in our car, so we hopped on a minivan for a test drive.  I really enjoyed how high we were sitting and could see the road well, the stow and go seats, the amazing storage capacity, and did it ever drive smoothly (it still does)!

We know the time will come soon to start thinking about purchasing a new vehicle. Not quite sure what type of vehicle or brand we will purchase this time around. Now that the kids are older, we might go back to a mid-size car. We have been looking at CUV’s, crossover utility vehicle, like the Journey. The CUV is  built on a car platform and combines features of a sport utility vehicle (SUV) with features from a passenger vehicle. We’ve also looked into a GMC truck that can sit us comfortably and haul a small trailer, but have decided that a crossover is better suited for the family. Like all the major purchases that we make, we will shop around at many dealerships and find online auto reviews before making a sensible decision for our family. Wish us good luck!

Have you considered purchasing a Crossover for your next vehicle?

Do you think it’s important to read auto reviews before purchasing a vehicle?

We JUST went through all of this! Last week we bought a Hyundai Santa Fe Sport and we are very happy. We love station wagons and were sad to have to say good bye to our 2003 VW Passat wagon. Wagons are just not made anymore (unless you go BMW or Mercedes…not bloody likely here!). It sits a lot higher than our old car but we are slowly getting used to it. So far, so good!

Good luck shopping for your next vehicle. I always owned a mid size car till 2 years ago and purchased a chevy trailblazer because of the 4×4 and all I can say is wow I love it,I sit up high and I love how it drives very smooth and the 4×4 really comes in handy in the winter time. I can’t believe I drove a car for so many years, I will never go back…lol

Ah! We are going through this decision at the moment as we try to replace our 2003 Mazda Protégé. We were thinking about the Mazda 5 which I think would work well for this stage of life (4yr old and 1yr old); but now we’re leaning towards buying used to basically just replace what we have and see us through the next few years without having to deal with car payments again until the kids are out of full-time daycare… Hoping to have it resolved in the next couple weeks so I can let you know what we finally decided 🙂

We aren’t in the position to replace our current vehicle yet, but we ALWAYS read reviews before we buy.

We used to drive a Grand Caravan and it was marvellous, we had 7 children and it could seat 9 comfortably and still had room for luggage. I loved that car. We never had any trouble with it, the only thing was we had to be very careful as it ran so quietly pedestrians didn’t hear us coming 🙂 I’m wondering if you have bought a new car now and what you decided on in the end if you did. 🙂
