Popularity of Toys

| February 16, 2016 | 6 Comments

As a birthday approaches, I wonder how popular the gifts we picked will be. Apparently the magnetic tiles we got are played with every day by kids of bloggers everywhere, and I can attest that they have been a hit in real life. We got a gym mat from IKEA so the kids can wrassle and do somersaults, and it gets used almost as much as the couch. Their aunt got them another room of furniture for the dollhouse that the kids use as a parking garage half the time, but can enjoy anyway because the set has a toilet. The cars can sit on the potty.

Whichever toys prove to be popular long-term, guaranteed they’ll be a hit at the exact same time with both kids, escalating into an all-out “I have it first, I need this all to myself right now” brawl. Then left alone to gather dust until the next time one of them shows interest. No one wanted it ten minutes before, or ten minutes after, but in that moment, it’s life-or-death. That’s how it goes with any of the toys (or ice cream scoop, or magnifying glass, or the claw clips that both boys want to put on their wrists ASAP).

I am a lifelong (award-winning!) cartoonist and mother of two delightful boys, aged 4 and 2. I like to view today's adventures in parenting as material for tomorrow's cartoon. Looking at family life through "cartoon-coloured glasses" helps me keep the all-important sense of humour required for raising kids... even for the events that don't seem so funny at the time. It’s always the question, what will be popular with the kiddos (this year)… I have always found that sticking to the classics and any toy that inspires activity or creativity to be a big winner!

It’s funny how some toys hit the market and the kids go crazy but the next year they’re gone and then things like board games and Barbie seems to stay forever.
