When I lived in Germany, we put out things like chairs, desks, lamps, computers and anything that was too big for the normal garbage collection like a sofa every 3 mths for collection (free of charge!). Then all day vans would drive around from Poland collecting what they could use or resell. Now that is positive recycling for sure. What was left was collected by the city. Other garbage like land-fill, old carpets, building materials had to be taken down town to a big collection area. Things that were big but ‘green’ like big branches were taken to a collection truck that came around once a week. It was all very well organised.
